1. For this assignment, my group was assigned the pillar of globalization for 21st
century
education. For this pillar, it is important to know that students learn how integrate their own
cultures and societies into others. Globalization in this world deals with how various economies,
cultures, and nations are brought together in mutual respect for one another. It is an integration of
countries around the world in order to create a global economy; globalization deals with
technology, economics, politics, societies, and cultures.
It is important to note how much globalization influences children in schools in today’s
world. Globalization is very important in education because it benefits the children in many
ways. For example, it allows the students to develop skills of communication, cooperation,
shared responsibility, and critical thinking. Also it gives students the opportunity to explore with
change, diversity, peace building, and acknowledge the concepts of poverty and wealth. Students
are able to gain a sense of identity and figure out who they are by learning through globalization.
In our world today, people are constantly accessing information from the internet. They
are able to receive so much information from the web; the power is endless! Doing research on
the internet proves to the children that it is a small world after all. All of us are linked in some
way or another. Applying globalization to the classroom promotes collaboration because it
allows people to connect with each other and helps them learn from one another. Over the
internet, students are able to share information with other people, which leads them to share
responsibility over the information. Globalization really is put to use on the internet because the
internet allows us to connect to so many new things.
There are so many examples of globalization because it can be used in many ways with
technology. Globalization is part of everyday life. For example, computers are made of parts and
2. pieces from all over the world, assembled in a company somewhere in the world, and then
shipped to America or wherever it is needed.
Our example of globalization in the classroom was the use of social media websites.
Children can use social media sites in order to connect to educators outside of the classroom and
also in order to collaborate with one another. Our specific example was a YouTube channel that
showed short video clips of various places around the world. For example, if a teacher was trying
to teach what culture is and how it plays a role in everyday life, they can use this YouTube
channel in order to demonstrate how culture varies with the location of places. Another example
is a Facebook page that had to do with South America. The page displayed pictures, videos, etc.
of South American life. It also allowed people to ask questions about the lifestyles that South
America may have. This all promotes collaboration, which in turn promotes globalization.
Technology plays a big role in globalization in education because it allows people to
share, produce and consume information. Technology is able to turn the students into global
citizens. People are able to communicate with one another from anywhere they are in the world.
They are able to access information on so many different technological devices, and Web 2.0
applications and social media sites make learning more efficient. Technology allows so many
different people to connect to one another and this all promotes collaboration and the use of
globalization in education.
