1. Assure Methods for Lesson Five: El Dia de los Muertos Celebration
A – Analyze Leaners - I am teaching a seventh grade classroom that
includes 22 students, 14 of them are girls and the remaining 8 are boys. The
class has a couple of different ethnicities contained it; the majority of them
are white, yet there are a few African Americans and Latinos in our
classroom. My students are mainly visual and auditory learners; however,
there are some sensual and active learners as well in our class.
S – State Objectives – Seventh grade students will demonstrate their
knowledge of the importance and traditions of El Dia de los Muertos through
a class celebration with 90% accuracy.
S – Select Media, Methods and Materials – 1. Podcast – A Podcast will be
played at the beginning of the class to introduce the students to our class
celebration. 2. Photoshop – There will be photos hanging around the room to
serve as decorations and some of them will be made through Photoshop. 3.
WebQuest – Students will have to print out their project from the WebQuest,
so they can hang the pictures of their ofrendas around the room. 4.
Secondlife – I will use Secondlife as a way to show them ‘real world’ areas
that actually celebrate the Day of the Dead.
U – Utilize Media, Methods, and Materials – I created the Podcast that will be
used in this lesson, so I know that it is appropriate to use in order to
introduce the students to our class’s celebration. I have also created the
Photoshop and WebQuest tools that we used in the previous lesson and will
use in this lesson as well. Everything is ready to use in order to prepare the
students to celebrate the holiday of El Dia de los Muertos.
R – Require Learner Participation - This lesson is the day that the students
will really have to participate. I am going to assess their knowledge of the
holiday by having them demonstrate it through a class celebration. I have
already informed parents about the celebration, so the parents realize what
their children will be participating in during this lesson. I have invited the
parents to join us as well. For this particular lesson in the unit, students will
be held to VERY high expectations due to the fact this is not a native holiday
to them. I will not tolerate any rude remarks or gestures during this
celebration and I will let my students know this. There will be serious
consequences if I hear of anyone offending the Spanish holiday or people
who regularly celebrate the holiday of El Dia de los Muertos.
E – Evaluate and Revise – This is a very big part of the unit because it is
where I am able to overall assess my students knowledge of the holiday of
El Dia de los Muertos. I will assess their familiarity and awareness of the
2. holiday through our class celebration. If my goal and objective is not met for
this lesson, I will add more ways to assess their knowledge besides a class
celebration. Also, this is the final day of the unit plan, so I will need to
assess my overall objective for the entire unit. If my whole unit objective is
not, I will reconsider some of the lessons and activities included in it. I will
review every single piece of technology used in this unit by getting feedback
from the students. If they technology did not help or benefit the students or
the students felt the technology should be used in a different way, I revise
and change my individual lessons and unit in order to accommodate the
needs of the students and my objective.
