This document discusses character education and its importance for developing well-mannered, responsible students. It teaches values like civics, manners, and critical thinking. Character education is especially important today to prepare students for challenges in society. Many students do not receive this type of values education at home. The document explores using technology like social media, blogs, and videos to promote character education pillars in modern classrooms. The goal is to mold students into better people when they do not receive this effort from others.
2. Description
Character education is a term used to describe teaching
children in a way to help them develop into decent human-
beings. It teaches them civics, manners, non-bullying,
healthy relationships and critical thinking.
3. Importance
Of course character education is important because we want
all of our children to grow up well mannered and responsible
individuals.
Also it is important to teach good character to help prepare
students for the challenges and dangers in today’s society.
It is important that students receive this type of education
at school because many do not receive it at home.
4. Rolein21stCenturyEducation
One of the biggest changes in the characterization in the
21st century is the use of technology
A lot of teachers find it difficult to manage students
because of social media. Social media is outside the
classroom and most students don’t have someone teaching them
or showing them what they should or should not put on social
media.
5. ImplementingTechnologyToolstoPromotePillar
Zello- Having the students use Zello at home with each other
teaches them the importance of being polite and courteous of
others
Youtube/ Storytelling- Have the separate groups of students
create their own storytelling video on character. The
students can create a skit, tell a story with picture and
music, write a song, or whatever other creative ideas they
come up with. The videos can be posted on the class YouTube
page
Social Media- In general, using social media in the classroom
is already a test of character! If a teacher decides to
6. TechnologyToolscont.
Creating posters through powerpoint- dividing the class into
three groups, they will come up with a poster design of their
choice on what it means to have integrity and character
Blogs- each student creates a blog, and other students in the
classroom can view it and comment. The blog posts should
surround the topic of: “what does it mean to have good
character when no one is looking?” The students will be
encouraged to use personal life experiences and examples.
7. Conclusion
Dr. Thomas Lickota- “Character education is the deliberate
effort to help people understand, care about, and act upon
core ethical values.”
In many instances, students do not get this effort from
people at home, so it is our duty as future teachers to
ensure, through our actions, these children are molded into
better people.
