  2. 2. UrbanizationSince 2008 for the first time, more than half theworld‘s population lives in urban areas.
  3. 3. UrbanizationIn 2030 cities and towns will be home to 5billion people.
  4. 4. Urbanization―This will greatly increase the number andproportion of young people in the urbanpopulation.‖
  5. 5. UrbanizationA majority of these young people be born intopoor families.
  6. 6. Challenges in EducationOne of the challenges for this new growth inpoor urban areas, is the quality of schools andeducation.
  7. 7. Challenges in EducationThirty-two percent of all public school studentsand nearly 50% of African - American andHispanic students fail to graduate from highschool.
  8. 8. Challenges in EducationA significant gap in achievement persists, withAfrican - American and Hispanic studentstrailing white students of the same age by twoto three years.
  9. 9. Primary Challenges in Urban Learning• ―Widespread inability to engage students inLearning.‖• ―Insufficient access to timely, individualized• content for students.‖
  10. 10. Urban Learning InnovationOne innovative program located in the SouthSide of Chicago is attempting to make a majorshift in urban education.

  12. 12. The Digital Youth Network The Digital Youth Network or DYN, is aprogram that merges in-school and out-of-school learning opportunities through newmedia.

  14. 14. DYN New System of LearningThe typical day for a DYN students consist four distinctnodes of learning: school, afterschool, home, andcommunity – connected by a independent social networkRemix World.
  15. 15. DYN New System of Learning―The DYN curriculum model is based on the reality thatwhile youth (particularly urban youth) are often disengagedwith traditional school learning… there are learningenvironments where the same youth are engaged andcommitted to the development of a set of skills.‖
  16. 16. The Role of Play In LearningStuart Brown suggests that play is essentially aseparate biological entity, comparable to sleepand dreaming. It is not just something to do atleisure, but a practical, safe exploration that isessential for healthy-social by-products, as wellas many functions of the brain-includingproblem solving.

  22. 22. Scaffolding for LearningIn Vygotsky developmental theory, a processknown as scaffolding involves assistance by amore competent instructor of a skill or task isgradually diminished, until the learner hasgrasped the material.

  29. 29. Media Literacy Education―It is quite possible that media education in thenew millennium will ultimately prove to be moreimportant than the ‗‗3 Rs‘‘—reading, writing andarithmetic.‖ - Dr Victor C. Strasburger

  33. 33. DNY Performance Measurement―The DNY research project involves two relatedstrands of data collection and analysis tocapture student development with 21st centuryskills and the organizational context thatsupports this growth.‖
  34. 34. DNY Performance Measurement―The first strand targets student level data thattracks the knowledge and skills acquisitionalong with the learning resources and spacesyouth access in this process.‖

DYN Program Deliverables• 40 percent of 2009 eighth-graders were accepted to selective enrollment high schools (district average was 5 percent)• Test scores consistently outperformed city and state• Participation gap reduced• Students recognized as leaders in the use of new media• Students took ownership of learning, moving beyondclassroom boundaries

Recommendations for Educational Remixing• Community based media and digital education workshops for adults and parents, to better accommodate student‘s learning outside school.• Technology outreach to insure every student has full and equal accessibility to online tools and resources.• Designs curriculum to accommodate students with special learning needs.
  38. 38. Recommendations for Educational Remixing• Development of Social Marketing Campaign to increase local and national awareness• Proactive national and international outreach to other urban and underserved communities for strategic partnership and modeling.
