2. Introduction
• Education is one of the basic activities of people in all human
societies.
• The continued existence of society depends upon the transmission of
culture of the young.
• It is essential that every new generation must be given training in the
ways of the group so that the same tradition will continue.
• Every society has its own ways and means of fulfilling this need.

3. Meaning
• The term education is derived from the Latin “educare” which literally
to ‘bring up’, and is connected with the verb “educare” which means
to ‘bring forth’.
• The idea of education is not merely to impart knowledge to the pupil
in some subjects but to develop in his/her those habits and attitudes
with which he may successfully face the future.
• According to the Aristotelian conception, the aim of education is “to
develop man’s faculties, especially, his mind, so that he may be able
to enjoy the contemplation of the supreme truth, goodness and
beauty in which perfect happiness essentially consists”.
4. Definition
• Durkheim conceives of education as “the socialization of the younger
generation”. He further states that it is “a continuous effort to impose
on the child ways of sleeping, feeling and acting which he/she could
not have arrived at spontaneously”.
• Sumner defined education as the attempt to transmit to the mores of
the group, so that he can learn “what conduct is approved and what
disapproved…how he ought to behave in all kinds of cases: what he
ought to believe and reject”.
• F.J. Brown and J.S. Roucek says that education is “the sum total of
experience which moulds the attitudes and determines the conduct of
both the child and adult”.

• Towards individuals:
Development of inborn potentialities- Education helps the child to
develop the inborn potentialities of child providing scope to develop.
Modifying behavior- Education helps to modify the past behavior
through learning and through different agencies of education.
All-round development- Education aims at the all round development
of child-physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual

to the own interest of the child.
Helping for adjustability- Man has reasoning and thinking power. Man
tries his best to adjust with his own environment through education.
8. Functions of education in the present scenario
• Towards the society:
Social change and control: We should not think or believe in the blind
beliefs, which are hindrances towards our development. Education
helps to walk with the development of science and technology.
Reconstruction of experiences: Education is life-long process. Life is
education and education is life. Life is full of experiences. So education
helps the individual to reconstruct the experience and adjust with the
environment.

10. Impact of Mass media on education
School Broadcasts for students
• All India Radio is putting out school broadcast programs from 73
stations in different languages as per the area where the stations are
situated.
• The duration of each programme varies from 15 to 30 mts. having
20 mts. per day in most of the cases.
• School Broadcast Programs are meant for formal educations like
secondary schools, primary schools and programs for teachers’
education.
• The non-formal category broadcasts for adults, neo-literate, farmers
etc.

• Secondary School Broadcasts are mostly syllabus oriented, covering
textbooks taking local needs into consideration in regional languages.
• They work as a supplement to the curriculum and cover subjects like
English, Sanskrit, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics etc. giving

important programs keeping the examination tension in mind for the
betterment of the students’ of class 10th & 12th. Subjects like General
Science, Mathematics and Languages are covered up in these programs with
due precautions.
• During vacations, some stations give lessons to help the student for
preparing for entrance examinations for professional courses like
Engineering, Medical, Agriculture, Veterinary Science etc.
• Information on other vocational courses where by students can get
exposures about their prospective futures are also broadcast taking experts
from different fields.
• Various formats like Dialogues, Discussions, Interviews, Documentary, Quiz,
Docu-Drama, Drama, Demonstration and experiments, Music and Magazines
are used.

14. School Broadcasts for teachers
• Teachers’ programs of 15 to 30 mts. durations once or twice in a week.
• The objective of this programme is to familiarize curriculum changes,
technology advancements and advance contents that are necessary for
teaching staff.
• Methodology of teaching, child psychology, educational policies and
other relevant topic are also covered.
• New developments in educational technology are also taken up in these
programs for the betterment of the teachers.
• Subjects like Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and English etc. have
seen number of changes with time.
• Teachers have been oriented and up-dated with these changes.
• Hence, teachers’ training program through radio played a significant
role.
15. CHEERS (Children’s Enrichment Experiment through Radio):
• It was meant for pre-school children of socially deprived classes
studying in Anganwadis in the age group of 3-6 years.
• It was carried out in four states viz Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Haryana
and Uttar Pradesh.
University broadcast
• Programs on Distance Education
• The regional centers of IGNOU prepare the radio counseling
schedules as per the needs of students located in their regions and
conduct the same in collaboration with the respective AIR stations.
17. UGC-Higher Education Television Project (1984)
• University students were the beneficiaries of this project.
• The University Grants Commission in collaboration with INSAT started educational
television project, popularly known as ‘Country wide Classroom’ on August 15, 1984
with the aim to update, upgrade and enrich the quality of education while extending
their reach.
• Under this programme, a one-hour programme in English on a variety of subjects is
presented with the objective of general enrichment for undergraduates, educated
public and the teachers as well.
• An inter-university Consortium for Education Communication (CEC) along with a chain
of about 20 audio-visual media Mass Communication.
• Research Centers were set up by the UGC at different institutions in the country, to
ascertain high quality of programming for this project.
• Besides producing programs at these centers, some programs are imported from
other countries, and are edited to suit the requirements of the Indian students. This
project is very popular among students, teachers and other learners.
18. IGNOU-Doordarshan Telecast (1991)
• The IGNOU-Doordarshan telecast programes, designed mainly for
Distance learners started in May 1991.
• Initially they were telecast on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from
6.30 to 7.00 A.M through the national network of Doordarshan with
an aim to provide tele-counselling to students of open universities in
remote areas.
• Owing to the encouraging response from viewers, the frequency of
this project was increased to five days a week.
• This programme is very popular.
19. Gyan-Darshan Educational Channel (2000)
• Ministry of Human Resource Development, Information &
Broadcasting, the Prasar Bharti and IGNOU launched Gyan Darshan
(GD) jointly on 26th January 2000 as the exclusive Educational TV
Channel of India.
• IGNOU was given the responsibility to be the nodal agency for
uplinking/ transmission.
• It started out as a two-hour daily test transmission channel for students
of open and conventional Universities.
• This duration was increased to 9 hrs/day.

• Although Gyan Darshan has made its presence felt in all Open
Universities and most of the prominent conventional Universities and
schools, it still has the potential to reach the door steps of learners
through cable TV network.
• At present Gyan Darshan through the cable transmission covers about

East, Nashik, Ahmedabad and Pune.
