Impact of mass
communication on education
Dr J Balamurugan
Introduction
• Education is one of the basic activities of people in all human
societies.
• The continued existence of society depends upon the transmission of
culture of the young.
• It is essential that every new generation must be given training in the
ways of the group so that the same tradition will continue.
• Every society has its own ways and means of fulfilling this need.
• Education has come to be one of the ways of fulfilling this need.
Meaning
• The term education is derived from the Latin “educare” which literally
to ‘bring up’, and is connected with the verb “educare” which means
to ‘bring forth’.
• The idea of education is not merely to impart knowledge to the pupil
in some subjects but to develop in his/her those habits and attitudes
with which he may successfully face the future.
• According to the Aristotelian conception, the aim of education is “to
develop man’s faculties, especially, his mind, so that he may be able
to enjoy the contemplation of the supreme truth, goodness and
beauty in which perfect happiness essentially consists”.
Definition
• Durkheim conceives of education as “the socialization of the younger
generation”. He further states that it is “a continuous effort to impose
on the child ways of sleeping, feeling and acting which he/she could
not have arrived at spontaneously”.
• Sumner defined education as the attempt to transmit to the mores of
the group, so that he can learn “what conduct is approved and what
disapproved…how he ought to behave in all kinds of cases: what he
ought to believe and reject”.
• F.J. Brown and J.S. Roucek says that education is “the sum total of
experience which moulds the attitudes and determines the conduct of
both the child and adult”.
Function of education
• To complete the socialization process.
• To transmit the central heritage.
• For the formation of social personality.
• Reformation of attitude.
• Education for occupational placement-An instrument of livelihood.
• Conferring status.
• Education encourages the spirit of competition.
• Education imparts values.
• Education trains in skills that are required by the economy.
Functions of education in the present scenario
• Towards individuals:
 Development of inborn potentialities- Education helps the child to
develop the inborn potentialities of child providing scope to develop.
Modifying behavior- Education helps to modify the past behavior
through learning and through different agencies of education.
All-round development- Education aims at the all round development
of child-physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual
Conti..
Preparing for the future- The education should be imparted according
to the own interest of the child.
Helping for adjustability- Man has reasoning and thinking power. Man
tries his best to adjust with his own environment through education.
Functions of education in the present scenario
• Towards the society:
Social change and control: We should not think or believe in the blind
beliefs, which are hindrances towards our development. Education
helps to walk with the development of science and technology.
Reconstruction of experiences: Education is life-long process. Life is
education and education is life. Life is full of experiences. So education
helps the individual to reconstruct the experience and adjust with the
environment.
Conti..
Development of social and moral value: Education teaches the moral
value and social value like co-operation, tolerance, sympathy, fellow
feelings, love affection, respect towards elder, helping the poor and
needy persons.
 Providing opportunity or equality: Education teaches us to give
equal opportunities in all aspects irrespective of caste, creed, color,
sex and religion.

studying in Anganwadis in the age group of 3-6 years.
• It was carried out in four states viz Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Haryana

• The regional centers of IGNOU prepare the radio counseling
schedules as per the needs of students located in their regions and
conduct the same in collaboration with the respective AIR stations.
Television programmes
UGC-Higher Education Television Project (1984)
• University students were the beneficiaries of this project.
• The University Grants Commission in collaboration with INSAT started educational
television project, popularly known as ‘Country wide Classroom’ on August 15, 1984
with the aim to update, upgrade and enrich the quality of education while extending
their reach.
• Under this programme, a one-hour programme in English on a variety of subjects is
presented with the objective of general enrichment for undergraduates, educated
public and the teachers as well.
• An inter-university Consortium for Education Communication (CEC) along with a chain
of about 20 audio-visual media Mass Communication.
• Research Centers were set up by the UGC at different institutions in the country, to
ascertain high quality of programming for this project.
• Besides producing programs at these centers, some programs are imported from
other countries, and are edited to suit the requirements of the Indian students. This
project is very popular among students, teachers and other learners.
IGNOU-Doordarshan Telecast (1991)

remote areas.
• Owing to the encouraging response from viewers, the frequency of
this project was increased to five days a week.
• This programme is very popular.
Gyan-Darshan Educational Channel (2000)

• IGNOU was given the responsibility to be the nodal agency for
uplinking/ transmission.
• It started out as a two-hour daily test transmission channel for students
of open and conventional Universities.
• This duration was increased to 9 hrs/day.
Conti..
• Although Gyan Darshan has made its presence felt in all Open
Universities and most of the prominent conventional Universities and
schools, it still has the potential to reach the door steps of learners
through cable TV network.
• At present Gyan Darshan through the cable transmission covers about

Educational Shows for Kids on Indian TV
• Kids and TV are almost insparable.
• There days life as a kid is also not that easy.
• Its no longer that calk walk, as kids these days have to meet with many
challenges in terms of studies, competition, participation in extra-curricular
activities and the list goes endless from here.
• The competition is aon an all time high and no matter parents intentionally
do it or not, is a lot of pressure on the innocent minds of kinds these day.
• Therefore parents need to keep vigilant eye on what all the kids watch and
help and guide them to opt for educative and informative TV shows.
Mickey Mouse in English on Disney Channel
• Certainly a cartoon, Mickey mouse is presented on the Disney
Channel.
• However when its time to enhance your kin’s English vocabulary, this
is the best thing on the TV!
• Yes you can just ask your child to plug in as young as 2 years and they
would certainly pick the language and the theme of the show that is
high on the language, great in terms of understanding the aspects like
the environment, pollution, seasons etc in the most beautiful way.
Art Attack
• One of the best creative shows that would help your tittle creative
minds to craft some exceptional activities.
• You would be amazed to see the child’s presence of mind, while they
do, typically the same as shown in the TV show.
• This is a concept that promotes the use of waste into creativity.
• A must watch for the little artists of tomorrow.
Discovery Kids
• This is an ultimate channel that shows many educative shows for the
curious and budding scientists.
• You can browse through these shows to inform and guide your kinds
towards a lot of wisdom about so many thigs around us.
The Jungle Book
• Yes, we saw it and our kids love watching this too.
• This is not exactly a show but a cartoon series that leaves a great
impact on a child’s psyche.
• This tells them to survive in even the most challenging times, even if
you are a kid.
• Also, the wildlife and the forests leave a great profound love for them
in kids.
Mister Maker comes to town
• Although this is not a show originated in the country, but now it is
presente4d here and kids in India are simply falling in love with the
cute trips and tricks shown here to create beautiful artifacts in just
one minute!
Arjun – The Prince of Bali
• The marvel that is dubbed into an animated series for the kids to
