Biography of Mark Twain Essay
Biography of Mark Twain Twain, Mark, pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835–1910),
American writer and humorist, whose best work is characterized by broad, often irreverent humor or
biting social satire. Twain's writing is also known for realism of place and language, memorable
characters, and hatred of hypocrisy and oppression. Born in Florida, Missouri, Clemens moved with
his family to Hannibal, Missouri, a port on the Mississippi River, when he was four years old. There
he received a public school education. After the death of his father in 1847, Clemens was
apprenticed to two Hannibal printers, and in 1851 he began setting type for and contributing
sketches to his brother Orion's Hannibal Journal. Subsequently he ... Show more content on

In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon. After living briefly in Buffalo, New York, the couple moved to
Hartford, Connecticut. Much of Twain's best work was written in the 1870s and 1880s in Hartford or
during the summers at Quarry Farm, near Elmira, New York. Roughing It (1872) recounts his early
adventures as a miner and journalist; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) celebrates boyhood in a
town on the Mississippi River; A Tramp Abroad (1880) describes a walking trip through the Black
Forest of Germany and the Swiss Alps; The Prince and the Pauper (1882), a children's book, focuses
on switched identities in Tudor England; Life on the Mississippi (1883) combines an
autobiographical account of his experiences as a river pilot with a visit to the Mississippi nearly two
decades after he left it; A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) satirizes oppression in
feudal England (see Feudalism). The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the sequel to Tom
Sawyer, is considered Twain's masterpiece. The book is the story of the title character, known as
Huck, a boy who flees his father by rafting down the Mississippi River with a runaway slave, Jim.
The pair's adventures show Huck (and the reader) the cruelty of which men and women are capable.
Another theme of the novel is the conflict between Huck's feelings of friendship with Jim, who is

Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS)
What is amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome (AMPS)? By definition amplified
musculoskeletal pain syndrome is " A medical condition in which an individual develops an
abnormal pain reflex. This overactive reflex causes constriction of blood vessels which deprives
oxygen to muscles, bones and skin causing lactic acid build–up. In turn, a mild pain signal is
amplified into a very painful signal. The pain can be consistent or intermittent" (Providence ). Each
case of this chronic illness is different in various ways. Patients can experience pain in different
parts of their body and at different pain levels. A common system that is seen in children with
AMPS is allodynia. Allodynia is when it hurts to be touched and it doesn't matter how light ... Show

On average, the program is three to four weeks, but it depends on the patient. The longest they have
had someone is eleven weeks. RAPS consists of different therapies like: art, music, physical,
occupational, pool, and group. A normal day would start by having to be at the hospital at 7:30, this
is so vitals can be taken before pool. Pool will drag on for an hour and after pool patients will walk
to a different building to begin their days. Next up will be either physical or occupational therapy. In
the morning is when timed activities happen. Timed activities are 14 different activities the patients
have to do everyday. The object is to beat the time from the day before, you have to complete the
activity until you beat the time. In between each session there is a two minute break where the
patients are able to lay down and do breathing exercises. After lunch, there is another session of PT
and OT. One time during the day a patient has "flex time" or free time where they don't have
anything to do, but they have to stay active. Music therapy happens in place of pool on fridays and
art therapy happens once a week. At the end of the day there is either yoga or breathing exercises.
During the last week of RAPS you have an "outing" where you're able to pick somewhere to visit (in
walking distance). This is so the doctors can see how your body would react to having a day
out. They also have a mock school day to see how they would handle a normal day. During RAPS
the schools aren't allowed to send their students any homework. RAPS is a wonderful program that
every child or teen should have access

Joan Bice Kitchen Research Paper
Joan Bice Underwood's Tearoom The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom is a "secret" café which is in
MacKay 27. This café is no only a popular place to eat on campus, but, it is also a place for the
culinary arts students to hone their skills as chefs. The Joan Bice Tearoom stands out as a place on
campus and is significant to the Iowa State land grant commission because of not only the ideals of
the café but simply how it is run.
Students take turns being in positions of leadership within the restaurant and this is what makes it
stand out among other places on campus. The students who work in the Tearoom are completely in
control of the restaurant and decide everything about the menu on any given day. Not only is this
restaurant a popular place to eat on campus but has been for decades and will continue to be for
years to come.
The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom was name after Joan Bice who was a 1952 graduate of the ISU
college of Home Economics. Joan Bice loved the tearoom and spent most of her time in college
working here improving her skills as a businessperson which was somewhat uncommon for her time

John Trump Short Biography
Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, a borough of New York City.[4][5][6][7]
He is the fourth of five children to Mary Anne (née MacLeod; 1912–2000), a homemaker and
philanthropist,[8] and Fred Trump (1905–1999), who worked as a real estate developer. His mother
was born at Tong on the Scottish island of Lewis.[9] In 1930, aged 18, she visited the United States
and met Fred Trump. They were married in 1936 and settled in Jamaica Estates, Queens, and Fred
Trump eventually became one of the city's biggest real estate developers.[8][10] Trump has one
living brother, Robert (born 1948), and two living sisters: Maryanne (born 1937) and Elizabeth
(born 1942). Maryanne is a United States federal judge on senior status for the United States Court
of Appeals for the Third Circuit.[11] Another brother, Fred Jr. (1938–1981), died of complications

Trump's paternal grandparents, Elizabeth (née Christ) and Frederick Trump, were emigrants who
moved to the United States from Germany in 1885.[13] Frederick worked as a successful Klondike

profile,[17] and again in his 1987 book, The Art of the Deal, Donald Trump incorrectly stated that
Frederick Trump was of Swedish origin,[18][19] an assertion that Fred Trump made for many years
ostensibly because "he had a lot of Jewish tenants and it wasn't a good thing to be German,"
according to a nephew identified as a family historian by The New York Times.[20] Donald Trump

A Narrative Essay About Moving To A College
I grew up in the country of the small town of Forest City, Iowa. I am an only child who has always
been a motivated person to achieve at my highest level. Throughout my life, I have always been told
I am hard worker, and I believe that is from my childhood background of growing up with a single
mother. My mother and I have gone through endless challenges with one another, but that does not
stop either of us from succeeding in life. I have set many high goals for myself, and nothing seems
to be impossible in my mind. When I was ten years old, my dad moved out. We lived in a rundown
country home that had a window air conditioning and was heated by a burning stove. My mom and I
would haul wood through snow from a shed across our yard to our basement just to keep our house
warm. We were low on money and sacrificed opportunities to help save money. About four years
later, my family could finally afford to get a divorce, and my mom and I moved to a house we could
manage better. It was hard for me to grow up without a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was instantly heart broken and terrified I would lose the person that motivated me to do my best.
My mom had to go through seventeen chemotherapy treatments and three surgeries. Throughout this
entire process, I was terrified, but I tried my best to hide it. I knew that my mom needed a solid
support system and optimism in the atmosphere. My mom getting cancer made it hard for me to
focus in school, sports, and I failed to be a teenager by being with friends and gaining new
experiences. About two years later, I was a senior in high school when my mom was pronounced
cancer free. A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I never felt so grateful in my life. My
mom's cancer taught us both to be optimistic in challenging situations, trust God's plans, and to
never take advantage of what you have because you never know when it can slip

Summary Of Nature's Metropolis By Cronon
In the novel Nature's Metropolis by William Cronon, the author examines the city of Chicago in the
context of the environmental and economic factors that has made it a trade center. Additionally, the
novel presents the case for a looser definition of nature in relationship to urban centers emphasizing
the interconnectedness of both spaces and the role of environmental and anthropogenic factors in
shaping them. Interconnectedness to the point that Cronon encourages readers to view the city and
hinterlands related to it as "a multitude of overlapping market and resource regions" (Cronon 278).
Viewing the landscape through this anthropocentric lens where all spaces are involved in the
economics of the region elucidates the relationships present and breaks down the abstract walls
between city and hinterland. This essay will critically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without sunshine, ecosystems would be confined to abiotic elements and mostly bacterial organisms
and the economy would not exist sans the people that drive the exchanges that make it possible.
Conversely, sunshine is converted into food for plants which can then be consumed by another
organism (and another organism...etc.) or converted into building materials. In either case, the
sunshine is converted into something with some market value which is what Cronon describes as
"the wealth of nature" despite the permutations it may go through before it's final use (Cronon 150).
Consequently, economy is reliant on the ecosystem in which it exists and of which it is a part and
vice versa. For example, the prevalence of logging would vary by location and time of year and the
forests in the area would accordingly have different appearances (Cronon 156–157). This meant that
the people in an area adapted to their surroundings based on the shared pressures that other
nonhuman organisms also

Physical Activity Journal Analysis
My physical activity journal is rather boring. The only real physical activity I do is walk to campus
from my house. Since my house is somewhat far away, I walk for a decent amount of time. My total
moderate intensity equivalent minutes for the week adds up to 485 minutes, all of this is walking
around at about three miles per hour. I did not partake in any muscle strengthening days during the
past week. I simply do not have enough time to go work out at the rec center, even though I would
love to weight lift there. As I said before, I primarily walk everywhere I go. I work at Cambus, so I
usually walk to campus and catch a bus to work from there. Most of my class times are spread out
throughout the day, so I usually walk to campus three or four times a day. In ... Show more content

I think I could also implement a strength training program into my daily activities. I used to weight
lift a decent amount in high school. While doing this, I felt very many positive rewards. It helped
boost my self–esteem, along with making me feel more energized. I think these benefits derived
from weight lifting would be a great improvement to my lifestyle, and it may lead me to greater
self–satisfaction. If I were to start lifting again, I would follow a similar training plan I learned in
high school. It coordinates greatly to the concepts we learned in class. In regards to the fourth
critical thinking question, the neighborhoods and communities around Iowa City offer a great
atmosphere for physical activity. The University of Iowa offers students use of their recreation
center and services. Iowa's campus also has many parks and green space allowing for people to play
sports and run around. The streets of Iowa City are somewhat safe for those who choose to bike.
Along with this, the city has many bike paths available to its citizens. Specifically, my neighborhood

Cultural Diversity Essay
What is culture? Are we that different? The English Anthropologist Edward B. Taylor explained it in
his work Primitive Culture as "Culture or civilization is a complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs, and other capabilities acquired by human as a member
of society."
Valuing and understanding cultural diversity is very important in terms of being able to understand
the differences and histories of a society.
Culture itself is a key feature in the identity of a society as it helps people within the society to
identify how they view themselves and other ethnic groups. Every community, culture, or ethnic
group tends to have its own values and beliefs of how to live their life. Every society relies on strong

Many habits are very similar to practices in the United States. Germany is a small and densely
populated country. Unlike the United States, which is a huge and densely populated country.
The greatest shock to Americans is probably that there are no speed limits on the German
"Autobahn", which is the Highway. Speed limits in cities are strictly enforced, but on most of the
"Autobahn" there is no limit.
In Germany people usually greet others when walking into a waiting room or train compartment. A
simple "Guten Tag" or, in my home state Bavaria "Gruess Gott", is the standard. Germans are also
diligent hand–shakers. Not only do they shake hands when meeting someone for the first time, but at
every meeting thereafter. Arriving at parties and gatherings, it is not unusual to greet everybody
individually, with a handshake – and then repeat the round again when you leave. But Never have a
hand in your pocket when shaking a Germans hand and always make eye contact.
Germans are quite reserved and typically won't take the initiative to meet with someone unless it's
necessary, especially if they know that you are American and their English is bad or nonexistent.
Germans expect Americans friendly, so it's a good idea for you to take the initiative and introduce
yourself. Every little bit of German you learn helps. Germans and all Europeans appreciate

Dillon's Rule Research Paper
Dillon's Rule is the cornerstone of American municipal law. Under Dillon's Rule, a municipal
government has authority to act only when in situations as such: the power is granted in the express
words of the statute, private act, or charter creating the municipal corporation, or the power is
necessarily or fairly implied in, or incident to the powers expressly granted and lastly the power is
one that is neither expressly granted nor fairly implied from the express grants of power, but is
otherwise implied as essential to the declared objects and purposes of the corporation. The Dillon
rule is used in interpreting state law when there is a question of whether or not a local government
has a certain power. Judge Forest Dillon, the chief justice

Should Music With Curse Words Be Allowed At School Dances

Should music with curse words be allowed at school dances?
I think that music with curse words should be allowed in school dances. I think this because usually
songs without a couple curse words don't have a good beat. Songs with curse words have a really
good beat. Without a good beat the mood at the dance isn't very high because there is nothing to
dance to. Our school usually has a killer dance. There is a lot of people that are dancing and in the
gym. When a bad song comes on that doesn't have a beat or any curse words, everyone goes into the
lobby. They do this because the song flat out stinks. When they hear a good song come back on they
meander their way back to the gym to

The Importance Of Civilization In Iowa City
Civilizations are culturally created environments in which we follow rules, standards, and ethical
behaviors. Iowa City offers multiple signs of civilization, including public vs. private land, religious
vs. secular, and the presence of central control. Through these five characteristics we can identify
and interpret what the environment is explaining to us. My area of choice is northern Iowa City,
which has an environment that tells me it is a civilization through rhetorical elements provided in
the use of space and materials that create it. In Northern Iowa City public space is common. "Happy
Hollow Park" offers an open landscape with sidewalks and free access. The pathways invite
civilians in and show them where they may go, but do not impose any rules on where they must go.
The basketball court and baseball field have no walls or barricades blocking entry, allowing us to
know they are available for whoever pleases. An outdoor pavilion could be used for family
gatherings and parties at no cost. A free parking lot with good lighting tells civilians that there is
nothing restricting their access to the space. This space is known as public due it's ease of entry and
the way the park invites civilians in with pathways and block–free attractions. Therefore, "Happy
Hollow Park" represents public space as an area that invites every civilian to explore and go as they
please. Private space is popular in Iowa City due to the amount of residential housing. The housing

Personal Narrative
There's nothing like summer to make you realize the tediousness of life. You go every day of school
waiting for it to be over, just for summer to start up and start the whole cycle all over again. By the
time May came around, I wanted to get away from everything. I only hung out with my friends two
times the whole summer. Hell, even that surprised me. I had to keep myself occupied. If I stopped
for one second then I'd start to think and if I started to think I'd spiral down further and further. No, I
needed to be busy. I got a job for just such a reason. I got a job helping out at my mom's church. I

If nothing else, it came as a welcomed escape from work, which had devoured the majority of my

over, you guessed it, the rules of water balloons. We embarked on a variety of adventures through
the forest, including going to shoot cans with my brother's bee–bee gun and terrifying each other
with a ghost story about our friend Clint. Eventually, we all parted our separate ways, and I was
back to my usual routine of spending all my free–time either working at the church or working out
at the gym with my eldest brother, Josh. I somehow fit in a few hours a week to teach myself to play

The Importance Of Civil Engineering
When you hear of the word engineering, what comes to mind? Do you think of a train engine rolling
over the plains of South Dakota? Maybe you think of a bridge or a road? If you thought of either of
those things, you are correct. Furthermore, Civil Engineering is all of these things and a little more.
"Civil engineering is arguably the oldest engineering discipline. It deals with the built environment
and can be dated to the first time someone placed a roof over his or her head or laid a tree trunk
across a river to make it easier to get across (Civil Engineering)." Some of the first ever examples of
the civil engineering was the roof and the bridge. Eventually, our knowledge and tools advanced to
enhance the durability and aestheticism of roads, bridges, and buildings. In addition to roads and
bridges, civil engineering also deals with planes, cars, and boats as well.
In order to become a civil engineer or any job, for instance, you must study and become a
perfectionist in that field. Studying in the school of engineering does not focus on just one subject of
study. To put differently, to become a professional in the job of an engineer you must excel in
mathematics. Math is one of the largest staples in engineering, architecture, and business. Diving
deeper, at Iowa State University Calculus 1 and 2 are two required courses to be taken in order to
continue in the path of engineering. In order to build the building that is aesthetically and
structurally sufficient engineers

Communication Reflection Paper
At times, circumstances in life can unknowingly guide one on a path leading to a promising and
rewarding career. Thanks to my family and sister, I am here today. When I was four years old, my
younger sister Carly was diagnosed with a rare developmental disorder, called Smith–Magenis
Syndrome (SMS). Of course at the time I did not understand what this meant, but as we got older,
many of Carly's challenges were attributes that came easily to me and other typically developing
kids. One of her biggest challenges was – and still is today – is communicating effectively. For
instance, Carly didn't use full words until early elementary school. Before that, she communicated
mostly through pointing or using monosyllabic repetitions when she wanted objects. At worst, she
would express her thoughts and frustrations through outbursts. From this young age, I was able to
observe Carly and her SLP work on improving her communication, either in our home or during her
speech sessions at the therapy clinic. However during my high school career, becoming an SLP was
just in the back of my mind, and was never my first choice. It didn't become prominent until entered
my freshman year of college at the University of Iowa, and took the Intro to Speech & Hearing
Processes and Disorders class. Throughout the semester I not only became interested in the concepts
I previously experienced through my sister, but also in concepts I had never heard of or thought

Persuasive Essay On The Java House
The Java House, located on East Washington Street in Iowa City, Iowa is a major study hub for
students attending the University of Iowa. The founder, Tara Cronbaugh, opened the first Java
House locations in 1994 after taking a trip to The University of California, Berkeley and developing
a fascination with coffee house ambience. Cronbaugh admired the relaxing, yet social environment
of the coffee houses on Berkeley's campus. She felt she had a mission to bring that same ambience
to a place back in Iowa City for the students at The University of Iowa. Since then, hundreds of
University students visit the Java House every week to enjoy a wide range of beverages or
homemade pastries. However, The Java House has become much more of a study ... Show more

It makes logical sense to allow a table to be open for students who genuinely need to be there.
Another way The Java House convinces students at The University of Iowa to get their coffee to go
if they aren't going to study is by appealing to pathos, or emotions. The Java House engages all the
senses to promote a studious environment. Immediately entering the coffee shop, one will notice it is
dimly lit, with a darker color scheme and warm–toned antique furniture. The color scheme, as well
as the lighting, invoke a sense of relaxation into University of Iowa student customers that is perfect
for studying and not so much for socialization. Although many students have earbuds or headphones
in, low volume, calm music plays throughout the shop. The music volume and genre allow for
students to stay on task and not to get distracted easily. The subtle smell of coffee also engulfs the
whole shop, creating an even more relaxing atmosphere. Lastly, when looking around one will
notice the vast majority of students are doing school work. All the senses work together to
communicate that The Java House is a quiet, relaxing environment ideal for studying and
productivity, not for friendly get–togethers or dates. Therefore, if that was a student's intention they
should get their coffee and go somewhere else more lively, fun, or casual, so they could better enjoy
themselves and make sure not to disturb or distract those working at The Java House.

Essay On Forest City Basin
Abstract The Forest city basin is located in northwestern Missouri, northeastern Kansas,
southwestern Iowa, and southeastern Nebraska. The Forest City basin is represented mainly by
shales deposited as the sea withdrew (regressed) westward, although there are small isolated areas in
northern Missouri in which a marine limestone formed. A few locations in west–central Missouri
have sandstone channels attaining a thickness of as much as 30 ft. within the Mine Creek Shale
(Manos). Introduction The Forest City basin is a bowl–like feature in the subsurface rock layers in
northwest Missouri and adjacent portions of Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Some areas bare oil and

Robert and Bessie Brown:
Civic Minded Residents of Bradley, South Dakota
Robert and Bessie Brown, who are the paternal grandparents of the author's wife, made their home
in Bradley, South Dakota, a farming community and rail hub on the eastern Dakota prairie. Bessie
grew up on a farm near Bradley, whereas Robert, subsequent to service in the Great War, arrived in
Bradley as a young adult seeking a livelihood by acquiring the community's Ford dealership. After
becoming husband and wife, they remained in the small town where the civic–minded couple took
on leadership roles in their church and numerous service organizations. Foremost in Robert and
Bessie's lives were their four children: Mary, Robert, Eldred, and Verna. They nurtured their
children through the challenging times of the Great Depression and, as they matured into adulthood,
guided them through the turbulent years of World War II.
Prior to World War II, Robert and Bessie's close relatives literally meant family that lived nearby,
most of whom were kin to Bessie. The only relatives of Robert's that resided in or near Bradley was
his brother and business partner, Harry and his wife, Flossie. In addition to Bessie's parents, Merritt
and Mary Kirby, other members of her close extended family were Bessie's sister and brother–in–

Personal Narrative: America, The Beautiful
America, The Beautiful It was the summer of 2014. We had ten days to have the American vacation
of a lifetime. This short period of time in my life would define America to my family and I. The
rocky structures, colors resembling rust in Utah, the blistering heat of Arizona. The insect ridden
Nebraska. The industrial Ilinois. The Great Lakes overlooked by Wisconsin. The rocky mountains
covered from base to peak in trees, almost submerged in a vivid green. Now it was time, to take it all
on and explore. Despite all the wonders we witnessed, we still had some negative times. From the
tedious experience of riding in a vehicle for more than a day to almost being fined for speeding in a
state we were very much foreign to. "This road is eerie" said my father as we drove down the dark
Nebraska road. The stop was terrifying of course, thoughts ran rampant in my head that our vacation
had been ruined. As the officer approached our window he said, "License and registration please."
My father complied and it was a typical encounter after that and was rather uneventful, thankfully.
As we drove off, I was appreciative of the officer's leniency. But now new things were ... Show

The Best Graduate School For Me
Introduction
As a junior at Iowa State University pursuing a B.S. degree in Animal Ecology with an emphasis in
Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, it is time for me to look into my future. I have considered going
right into employment, but I think that getting a Master of Science degree is more beneficial to me.
Most companies require Fish Biologists to have an M.S. degree and eventually that's what I would
like to be. In this report I discuss, analyze, and choose the best graduate school for me based on the
final score of criteria ratings per three graduate schools of my choice. The purpose of this analysis,
is to analyze three companies and evaluate them based on my goals and preferences, to determine
which one will be best for me. The graduate schools I chose for this analysis are the State University
of New York, Graduate School of Clemson, and Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado
State University. I chose these schools because they offer my program of study for a M.S. degree in
a field that relates to my B.S. degree from Iowa State University. Likewise, these are schools I have
considered after speaking with my academic advisor from Iowa State University.
Evaluation Criteria
Before I chose a graduate school, I determined what my criteria is. My criteria is the location of the

Description Of Nicaragu The Spanish Word For Water

The Nicarao tribe originally immigrated to Nicaragua from Mexico, after the fall of the Aztec

Who Is The Best People I Know?
Helping Hand Have you ever wondered how much of an impact you could have on someone else's
life just by doing something small for them? As you start to grow up you make sense of helping
each other out with the little things in life. Some people don't even realize they do it every day,

you are doing good for others by not realizing it, and that is just what Brittany Ross continues to do.
Brittany grew up in Peoria Illinois, and her family was known for the people that helped the
community. From what she can remember her family would always have volunteering come first
and always would help others out. She says "They are the best people I know" (Ross). As a child she

giving time to help everyone with whatever they needed. They helped people who were in need of
things around the house and even places that needed donations to keep in business. As of right now
she says she will come back home during breaks to help out around the community and to try to be

The Abuse of Alcohol by College Students
Alcohol and the abuse of it by college students is a big problem that many college towns such as
Iowa City, Iowa, are facing. With increasingly more students drinking alcohol, what was once just a
casual drink can quickly turn into binge drinking. This behavior has many consequences for not only
the student, but also the public. By being resilient and working together as a community, we all
could make it easier to combat this problem of binge drinking in college students in Iowa City and
the troubles that arise from it. Binge drinking is defined as the consumption of alcohol that raises a
person's blood alcohol concentration in a short amount of time. This usually means five or more
drinks for men and four or more drinks for women within a two–hour time span. Although most
college students are not able to drink alcohol legally until their junior year, studies have shown that
about four out of five college students drink alcohol before the legal age of twenty–one. Of these
college students who drink, about half of them engage in binge drinking. Binge drinking increases
the risk of alcohol poisoning, a condition that could result in death. This level of drinking has also
been shown to increase the risk of committing suicide and/or being a victim of sexual assault.
Between 1.2 and 1.5 percent of college students say they have tried commit suicide and more than
97,000 college students are sexually abused as a result of alcohol or drug use. (Warren) Binge

Burial Customs In America Essay
According to an article submitted to the Berkeley Planning Journal, approximately 800,000 gallons
of formaldehyde is buried in the United States every year. To put the amount of this hazardous
chemical that Americans use to bury their people in perspective, it is enough to fill "one and a
quarter Olympic–sized swimming pools each year" (Calderone). Unfortunately, this is only one of
the many issues that is hurting the environment and has arised from modern burials. Because of the
negative environmental effects that modern burial customs are causing, Americans should switch
back to natural burials in order to decrease the impact that modern burial practices have left on
Earth. In antebellum America, burial customs were onced a personal family issue. As custom, the
families of early Americans were expected to wash and dress their loved ones in family parlors and

Up until the Civil War, Gary Laderman, the Professor of American Religious History and Cultures at
Emory University, explains that, "...most Americans had no knowledge of the [preserving]
procedure and abhorred any unnatural intervention of the body." But during and after the Civil War,
families needed to delay the natural decaying process in order to have sufficient time to identify
their loved ones who lost their lives during the war.. Because transportation in the mid 1800's is
nowhere near as good as modern transportation, families had to wait several days, even weeks, to
receive the body of their loved one. Therefore, the Civil War was responsible for the emergence of
the embalming process in the United States. In the 1850's, Dr. Thomas Holmes had experimented
with the French method of arterial embalming and soon created his own embalming fluid to which
he was then hired to embalm the corpses of dead Union officers (Kelly). As a result of the growing
popularity of embalming, Laderman explains that the number of undertakers was

The Surf Ballroom. Big events in this state include Ragbrai, Iowa State Fair, and Tree Town.
The First stop for Anthony's visit would be the Capitol. The Capitol In Des Moines was constructed
in 1871 and it took 15 years to build. In 1904 there was a fire in the North Wing of the building that
was believed to have been caused by a candle. The gold dome on the top is real but it is only
1/250,000 of an inch thick and has to be covered with a protective coating to help protect it. The
Capitol contains the Civil War and Pearl Harbor monuments. Lots of people come and tour the
Capitol which gives them an insight of the government for the state. ... Show more content on

Tons of families go for the real agriculture experience. Whether people show or not the state fair is a
destination that lots go to have fun. Dates are August 10th through August 20th. More than 1 Million
people show up each year to this event and the numbers keep growing as each year goes on. A
famous exhibition is the buttermilk cow, and that attracts a lot of people attending the Fair. The
buttermilk cow was vandalized in 2013 by PEETA. PEETA stands for People for Ethical Treatment

food stands. Rides are available for kids as well as renting golf carts for people that don't want to
walk as much as the rest. Spending time at the Iowa State Fair can be fun but costly if you do not
watch what you by. Let alone the fact that it is twelve dollars for adults and six dollars for kids to get

Biography Of Mark Twain Essay

  • 1. Biography of Mark Twain Essay Biography of Mark Twain Twain, Mark, pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835–1910), American writer and humorist, whose best work is characterized by broad, often irreverent humor or biting social satire. Twain's writing is also known for realism of place and language, memorable characters, and hatred of hypocrisy and oppression. Born in Florida, Missouri, Clemens moved with his family to Hannibal, Missouri, a port on the Mississippi River, when he was four years old. There he received a public school education. After the death of his father in 1847, Clemens was apprenticed to two Hannibal printers, and in 1851 he began setting type for and contributing sketches to his brother Orion's Hannibal Journal. Subsequently he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon. After living briefly in Buffalo, New York, the couple moved to Hartford, Connecticut. Much of Twain's best work was written in the 1870s and 1880s in Hartford or during the summers at Quarry Farm, near Elmira, New York. Roughing It (1872) recounts his early adventures as a miner and journalist; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) celebrates boyhood in a town on the Mississippi River; A Tramp Abroad (1880) describes a walking trip through the Black Forest of Germany and the Swiss Alps; The Prince and the Pauper (1882), a children's book, focuses on switched identities in Tudor England; Life on the Mississippi (1883) combines an autobiographical account of his experiences as a river pilot with a visit to the Mississippi nearly two decades after he left it; A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) satirizes oppression in feudal England (see Feudalism). The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the sequel to Tom Sawyer, is considered Twain's masterpiece. The book is the story of the title character, known as Huck, a boy who flees his father by rafting down the Mississippi River with a runaway slave, Jim. The pair's adventures show Huck (and the reader) the cruelty of which men and women are capable. Another theme of the novel is the conflict between Huck's feelings of friendship with Jim, who is one of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS) What is amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome (AMPS)? By definition amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome is " A medical condition in which an individual develops an abnormal pain reflex. This overactive reflex causes constriction of blood vessels which deprives oxygen to muscles, bones and skin causing lactic acid build–up. In turn, a mild pain signal is amplified into a very painful signal. The pain can be consistent or intermittent" (Providence ). Each case of this chronic illness is different in various ways. Patients can experience pain in different parts of their body and at different pain levels. A common system that is seen in children with AMPS is allodynia. Allodynia is when it hurts to be touched and it doesn't matter how light ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On average, the program is three to four weeks, but it depends on the patient. The longest they have had someone is eleven weeks. RAPS consists of different therapies like: art, music, physical, occupational, pool, and group. A normal day would start by having to be at the hospital at 7:30, this is so vitals can be taken before pool. Pool will drag on for an hour and after pool patients will walk to a different building to begin their days. Next up will be either physical or occupational therapy. In the morning is when timed activities happen. Timed activities are 14 different activities the patients have to do everyday. The object is to beat the time from the day before, you have to complete the activity until you beat the time. In between each session there is a two minute break where the patients are able to lay down and do breathing exercises. After lunch, there is another session of PT and OT. One time during the day a patient has "flex time" or free time where they don't have anything to do, but they have to stay active. Music therapy happens in place of pool on fridays and art therapy happens once a week. At the end of the day there is either yoga or breathing exercises. During the last week of RAPS you have an "outing" where you're able to pick somewhere to visit (in walking distance). This is so the doctors can see how your body would react to having a day out. They also have a mock school day to see how they would handle a normal day. During RAPS the schools aren't allowed to send their students any homework. RAPS is a wonderful program that every child or teen should have access ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Joan Bice Kitchen Research Paper Joan Bice Underwood's Tearoom The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom is a "secret" café which is in MacKay 27. This café is no only a popular place to eat on campus, but, it is also a place for the culinary arts students to hone their skills as chefs. The Joan Bice Tearoom stands out as a place on campus and is significant to the Iowa State land grant commission because of not only the ideals of the café but simply how it is run. The students who work in the Tearoom are completely in control of the restaurant and decide everything about the menu on any given day. Not only is this restaurant a popular place to eat on campus but has been for decades and will continue to be for years to come. The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom was name after Joan Bice who was a 1952 graduate of the ISU college of Home Economics. I am an only child who has always been a motivated person to achieve at my highest level. Throughout my life, I have always been told I am hard worker, and I believe that is from my childhood background of growing up with a single mother. My mother and I have gone through endless challenges with one another, but that does not stop either of us from succeeding in life. I have set many high goals for myself, and nothing seems to be impossible in my mind. When I was ten years old, my dad moved out. We lived in a rundown country home that had a window air conditioning and was heated by a burning stove. My mom and I would haul wood through snow from a shed across our yard to our basement just to keep our house warm. We were low on money and sacrificed opportunities to help save money. About four years later, my family could finally afford to get a divorce, and my mom and I moved to a house we could manage better. It was hard for me to grow up without a ... My mom had to go through seventeen chemotherapy treatments and three surgeries. Throughout this entire process, I was terrified, but I tried my best to hide it. I knew that my mom needed a solid support system and optimism in the atmosphere. My mom getting cancer made it hard for me to focus in school, sports, and I failed to be a teenager by being with friends and gaining new experiences. About two years later, I was a senior in high school when my mom was pronounced cancer free. A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I never felt so grateful in my life. My mom's cancer taught us both to be optimistic in challenging situations, trust God's plans, and to never take advantage of what you have because you never know when it can slip ... Additionally, the novel presents the case for a looser definition of nature in relationship to urban centers emphasizing the interconnectedness of both spaces and the role of environmental and anthropogenic factors in shaping them. Interconnectedness to the point that Cronon encourages readers to view the city and hinterlands related to it as "a multitude of overlapping market and resource regions" (Cronon 278). Viewing the landscape through this anthropocentric lens where all spaces are involved in the economics of the region elucidates the relationships present and breaks down the abstract walls between city and hinterland. Without sunshine, ecosystems would be confined to abiotic elements and mostly bacterial organisms and the economy would not exist sans the people that drive the exchanges that make it possible. Conversely, sunshine is converted into food for plants which can then be consumed by another organism (and another organism...etc.) or converted into building materials. In either case, the sunshine is converted into something with some market value which is what Cronon describes as "the wealth of nature" despite the permutations it may go through before it's final use (Cronon 150). Consequently, economy is reliant on the ecosystem in which it exists and of which it is a part and vice versa. For example, the prevalence of logging would vary by location and time of year and the forests in the area would accordingly have different appearances (Cronon 156–157). Since my house is somewhat far away, I walk for a decent amount of time. My total moderate intensity equivalent minutes for the week adds up to 485 minutes, all of this is walking around at about three miles per hour. I did not partake in any muscle strengthening days during the past week. I simply do not have enough time to go work out at the rec center, even though I would love to weight lift there. I think these benefits derived from weight lifting would be a great improvement to my lifestyle, and it may lead me to greater self–satisfaction. If I were to start lifting again, I would follow a similar training plan I learned in high school. It coordinates greatly to the concepts we learned in class. In regards to the fourth critical thinking question, the neighborhoods and communities around Iowa City offer a great atmosphere for physical activity. • 15. Cultural Diversity Essay What is culture? Are we that different? The English Anthropologist Edward B. Taylor explained it in his work Primitive Culture as "Culture or civilization is a complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs, and other capabilities acquired by human as a member of society." Valuing and understanding cultural diversity is very important in terms of being able to understand the differences and histories of a society. Culture itself is a key feature in the identity of a society as it helps people within the society to identify how they view themselves and other ethnic groups. Every community, culture, or ethnic group tends to have its own values and beliefs of how to live their life. Every society relies on strong ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many habits are very similar to practices in the United States. Germany is a small and densely populated country. Unlike the United States, which is a huge and densely populated country. The greatest shock to Americans is probably that there are no speed limits on the German "Autobahn", which is the Highway. Speed limits in cities are strictly enforced, but on most of the "Autobahn" there is no limit. In Germany people usually greet others when walking into a waiting room or train compartment. A simple "Guten Tag" or, in my home state Bavaria "Gruess Gott", is the standard. Germans are also diligent hand–shakers. Not only do they shake hands when meeting someone for the first time, but at every meeting thereafter. Arriving at parties and gatherings, it is not unusual to greet everybody individually, with a handshake – and then repeat the round again when you leave. But Never have a hand in your pocket when shaking a Germans hand and always make eye contact. Germans are quite reserved and typically won't take the initiative to meet with someone unless it's necessary, especially if they know that you are American and their English is bad or nonexistent. Germans expect Americans friendly, so it's a good idea for you to take the initiative and introduce yourself. Every little bit of German you learn helps. I think that music with curse words should be allowed in school dances. I think this because usually songs without a couple curse words don't have a good beat. Songs with curse words have a really good beat. Without a good beat the mood at the dance isn't very high because there is nothing to dance to. Our school usually has a killer dance. There is a lot of people that are dancing and in the gym. When a bad song comes on that doesn't have a beat or any curse words, everyone goes into the lobby. • 23. The Importance Of Civilization In Iowa City Civilizations are culturally created environments in which we follow rules, standards, and ethical behaviors. Iowa City offers multiple signs of civilization, including public vs. private land, religious vs. secular, and the presence of central control. Through these five characteristics we can identify and interpret what the environment is explaining to us. My area of choice is northern Iowa City, which has an environment that tells me it is a civilization through rhetorical elements provided in the use of space and materials that create it. In Northern Iowa City public space is common. "Happy Hollow Park" offers an open landscape with sidewalks and free access. The pathways invite civilians in and show them where they may go, but do not impose any rules on where they must go. The basketball court and baseball field have no walls or barricades blocking entry, allowing us to know they are available for whoever pleases. An outdoor pavilion could be used for family gatherings and parties at no cost. A free parking lot with good lighting tells civilians that there is nothing restricting their access to the space. This space is known as public due it's ease of entry and the way the park invites civilians in with pathways and block–free attractions. Therefore, "Happy Hollow Park" represents public space as an area that invites every civilian to explore and go as they please. Private space is popular in Iowa City due to the amount of residential housing. The housing in Iowa City ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Maybe you think of a bridge or a road? If you thought of either of those things, you are correct. Furthermore, Civil Engineering is all of these things and a little more. "Civil engineering is arguably the oldest engineering discipline. It deals with the built environment and can be dated to the first time someone placed a roof over his or her head or laid a tree trunk across a river to make it easier to get across (Civil Engineering)." Some of the first ever examples of the civil engineering was the roof and the bridge. Eventually, our knowledge and tools advanced to enhance the durability and aestheticism of roads, bridges, and buildings. In addition to roads and bridges, civil engineering also deals with planes, cars, and boats as well. In order to become a civil engineer or any job, for instance, you must study and become a perfectionist in that field. Studying in the school of engineering does not focus on just one subject of study. To put differently, to become a professional in the job of an engineer you must excel in mathematics. • 35. Communication Reflection Paper At times, circumstances in life can unknowingly guide one on a path leading to a promising and rewarding career. Thanks to my family and sister, I am here today. When I was four years old, my younger sister Carly was diagnosed with a rare developmental disorder, called Smith–Magenis Syndrome (SMS). Of course at the time I did not understand what this meant, but as we got older, many of Carly's challenges were attributes that came easily to me and other typically developing kids. One of her biggest challenges was – and still is today – is communicating effectively. For instance, Carly didn't use full words until early elementary school. Before that, she communicated mostly through pointing or using monosyllabic repetitions when she wanted objects. At worst, she would express her thoughts and frustrations through outbursts. From this young age, I was able to observe Carly and her SLP work on improving her communication, either in our home or during her speech sessions at the therapy clinic. However during my high school career, becoming an SLP was just in the back of my mind, and was never my first choice. It didn't become prominent until entered my freshman year of college at the University of Iowa, and took the Intro to Speech & Hearing Processes and Disorders class. Throughout the semester I not only became interested in the concepts I previously experienced through my sister, but also in concepts I had never heard of or thought twice about like stuttering, aphasia, and ... • 60. Personal Narrative: America, The Beautiful America, The Beautiful It was the summer of 2014. We had ten days to have the American vacation of a lifetime. This short period of time in my life would define America to my family and I. The rocky structures, colors resembling rust in Utah, the blistering heat of Arizona. The insect ridden Nebraska. The industrial Ilinois. The Great Lakes overlooked by Wisconsin. The rocky mountains covered from base to peak in trees, almost submerged in a vivid green. Now it was time, to take it all on and explore. Despite all the wonders we witnessed, we still had some negative times. From the tedious experience of riding in a vehicle for more than a day to almost being fined for speeding in a state we were very much foreign to. "This road is eerie" said my father as we drove down the dark Nebraska road. The stop was terrifying of course, thoughts ran rampant in my head that our vacation had been ruined. As the officer approached our window he said, "License and registration please." My father complied and it was a typical encounter after that and was rather uneventful, thankfully. The Best Graduate School For Me Introduction As a junior at Iowa State University pursuing a B.S. degree in Animal Ecology with an emphasis in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, it is time for me to look into my future. I have considered going right into employment, but I think that getting a Master of Science degree is more beneficial to me. Most companies require Fish Biologists to have an M.S. degree and eventually that's what I would like to be. In this report I discuss, analyze, and choose the best graduate school for me based on the final score of criteria ratings per three graduate schools of my choice. The purpose of this analysis, is to analyze three companies and evaluate them based on my goals and preferences, to determine which one will be best for me. The graduate schools I chose for this analysis are the State University of New York, Graduate School of Clemson, and Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. I chose these schools because they offer my program of study for a M.S. degree in a field that relates to my B.S. degree from Iowa State University. Likewise, these are schools I have considered after speaking with my academic advisor from Iowa State University. • 74. The Abuse of Alcohol by College Students Alcohol and the abuse of it by college students is a big problem that many college towns such as Iowa City, Iowa, are facing. With increasingly more students drinking alcohol, what was once just a casual drink can quickly turn into binge drinking. This behavior has many consequences for not only the student, but also the public. By being resilient and working together as a community, we all could make it easier to combat this problem of binge drinking in college students in Iowa City and the troubles that arise from it. Binge drinking is defined as the consumption of alcohol that raises a person's blood alcohol concentration in a short amount of time. This usually means five or more drinks for men and four or more drinks for women within a two–hour time span. Although most college students are not able to drink alcohol legally until their junior year, studies have shown that about four out of five college students drink alcohol before the legal age of twenty–one. Of these college students who drink, about half of them engage in binge drinking. Binge drinking increases the risk of alcohol poisoning, a condition that could result in death. This level of drinking has also been shown to increase the risk of committing suicide and/or being a victim of sexual assault. Between 1.2 and 1.5 percent of college students say they have tried commit suicide and more than 97,000 college students are sexually abused as a result of alcohol or drug use. To put the amount of this hazardous chemical that Americans use to bury their people in perspective, it is enough to fill "one and a quarter Olympic–sized swimming pools each year" (Calderone). Unfortunately, this is only one of the many issues that is hurting the environment and has arised from modern burials. Because of the negative environmental effects that modern burial customs are causing, Americans should switch back to natural burials in order to decrease the impact that modern burial practices have left on Earth. In antebellum America, burial customs were onced a personal family issue. As custom, the families of early Americans were expected to wash and dress their loved ones in family parlors and would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Up until the Civil War, Gary Laderman, the Professor of American Religious History and Cultures at Emory University, explains that, "...most Americans had no knowledge of the [preserving] procedure and abhorred any unnatural intervention of the body." But during and after the Civil War, families needed to delay the natural decaying process in order to have sufficient time to identify their loved ones who lost their lives during the war.. Because transportation in the mid 1800's is nowhere near as good as modern transportation, families had to wait several days, even weeks, to receive the body of their loved one. Therefore, the Civil War was responsible for the emergence of the embalming process in the United States. In the 1850's, Dr. Thomas Holmes had experimented with the French method of arterial embalming and soon created his own embalming fluid to which he was then hired to embalm the corpses of dead Union officers (Kelly).
