The Burning Of Petroleum Based Fuels
Can you see the light? As the burning of petroleum–based fuels, natural gases, and coal continues,
smog will continue to cover the sky. Pollution from said burning occurs as greenhouse gases and
chemicals. Specifically, petroleum–based fuels, natural gases, and coal release energy when heat
breaks the bonds between hydrogens and carbons, generating energy and releasing carbon dioxide
and water as byproducts. This energy often originates from stored energy preserved in organisms
that eventually died and lingered in the crust. The byproduct carbon dioxide is the most dominant of
the greenhouse gases, which are gases that absorb and release thermal energy from the Sun. These
gases trap thermal energy in the atmosphere while releasing a small amount into space. Global
warming occurs due to the trapping of this heat. Their covering of the sky and Sun reduces the
amount of sunlight that can reach the Earth. In addition, these energy sources are also bulky and
inefficient. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (2014), producing even one
kilowatt–hour of energy (one kilowatt of electricity expended in one hour), 0.08 gallons of
petroleum–based fuel, 1000 cubic feet of natural gases, and 1.09 pounds of coal ("How much coal,
natural gas, or petroleum is used to generate a kilowatt–hour 1 of electricity?"). Despite the
availability of alternative energy sources, most people prefer these "dirty" energy sources.
Solar power shows promise as a potential alternative.

Todd Grayson Case Study
Chapter Four: Todd Grayson & lAPORSHA BROWN Todd grayson is unkind, courageous, jealous,
and seemed to be showing a few traits of his father, Shawn. Todd always seemed to have a odd look
on his face, as if he was hiding something. At only 6 years old he was caught shop lifting on
numerous occasions and was already starting to hang out with a few of the bad kinds on the street.
This put his mother Laporsha in a tough spot when it came to her parenting. She wanted all the help
she could get for her son Todd, but didn't want to expose the fact that had been seeing Shawn, her
brothers enemy. Her mind always dwelled on this, and she knew that there would once come a day
when Todd and his father were revealed to her brother. Until then, however, she'd been keeping
herself busy with a part time job as a waitress in Monti Carle' bar. She'd also been cleaning a old
lady's house as a side job and got paid under the table. This was just enough to help her and Todd
get by. She'd always worry that one day when she was out at work, Shawn might decide to run
away. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Laporsha started to panic, as any mother would, and called the cops in hopes to find her son. After a
few minutes the cops arrived at her house with search dogs and helped locate her son. Todd, and a
few other boys were in a open park digging at the ground. As soon as Laporsha got to the scene, her
nose filled with a ghastly smell. She'd never smelled human flesh before, but the aroma around her
definitely told her this could be the first time she had smelled it. the minute Laporsha saw human
flesh bone she knew dad the town beverly hills is no longer the town it used to be . She knew she
had the find a way out of the town but it was too late since she had a son and her brother is a CEO
of a well known company in Beverly Hills. The police officers gave her a look and said, "Do you

Fear and Tension in The Whole Towns Sleeping and A Terribly Strange Bed
The essay i have written is a comparison of two short stories. One written by Ray Bradbury in
1950's and titled "The Whole Towns Sleeping". The other was written by Wilkie Collins in 1856 and
entitled "A Terribly Strange Bed".
"The Whole Towns Sleeping" is about a middle–aged spinster called "Lavinia" 37, who goes to the
cinema with her friends while a mysterious killer, is at large. She is fully convinced that the killer
would not strike again for another four weeks because a murder has just occurred, and they seem to
happen at intervals when 'the moon is full', and superstitiously then 'men do strange things' because

"The Whole Towns Sleeping" is set in a small town in Illinois, U.S.A. A ravine runs straight through
the middle "The ravine cut the town in two". The ravine is the mysterious area of the town like a
'black dynamo', surrounded by 'secret mists' and 'odours' of a "rank greenhouse". The description of
the ravine creates tension and shows it to be a constant threat with its dark and gloomy images.
In "A Terribly Strange Bed" the main part of the story is set in the back street of a seedy gambling
house in Paris. The atmosphere is described, "Here, there was nothing but tragedy – mute weird
tragedy. The quiet in the room was horrible". This builds up tension effectively, and creates an
effective image of the gamblers as they watch in silence, and their desperate need to win to survive.
Lavinia Nebbs the protagonist in "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is described as "very straight and
slim", a typical spinster who has lots of confidence in herself, and quite sensible, but occasionally
craves excitement, which inevitably will lead her to make errors in judgment.
She insists that she stays at her own home and declines several offers of a bed for the night, even
though 'The Lonely One' is still on the loose, and despite warnings she insists she will still walk
home alone. These

Ray Bradbury 's Fahrenheit 451
Have you ever stopped to wonder how modern technology has shaped our society, and where it will
lead our future of 'social' interaction? Have you ever been sitting and listening to the news, when
you hear a new story on yet another book being banned for some petty reason, such as 'protection of
children's innocence' or 'offensive content'? Have you thought about where such things will take us
and our changing, evolving definition of socializing? If you belong with those who contemplate
things, who turn things over in their minds, who don't allow themselves to use ignorance as a shield
from difficult, complex thinking, you may have answered 'yes'. Knowledge, wisdom, and logical
reasoning are important to today's society, but unfortunately, ... Show more content on

Oh, to scratch that itch, eh? Well, Montag, take my word for it, I've had to read a few in my time, to
know what I was about, and the books say nothing! Nothing you can teach or believe. ... You come
away lost.'" (Bradbury 59) He explains that the words in books do not seem to be of any value, and
that reading them gives the reader not a speck of insight into any aspect of life. In this society, his
words ring true for almost everyone, except those who managed to learn before the schools shut
down and those who yearned to understand what books say. Furthermore, Beatty's attempts to force
Montag into the mold of this society pushes the man to search for wisdom in the depths of literature.
Beatty spurs Montag to delve into the world of literature. He dares the man to defy him in an almost
mocking tone – such as here: "We'd certainly miss you if you didn't show." (60) Here he implies that
if Montag does not show up to burn his book, it will not be good news for him. Beatty is a strict man
always following and enforcing the rules, seldom deviating from them, and is a man of his word. He
knows Montag is hiding something, which he intuitively guesses is a book, and he promises
indirectly that he will be back to burn down the man's house if he does not bring it in within twenty–
four hours. Afraid of losing his one chance of learning, he frantically vows to try to memorize a part
of the Bible he stole from the woman who committed suicide. The mere suggestion of the fire

The Effects Of Food Irradiation Practices On The United...
Overview of the history of food irradiation practices in the United States from World War II era to
the end of the 20th century, and speculation about its future commercial prospects. Researchers in
the United States and Great Britain filed patents in 1905 for using ionizing radiation to kill food–
borne bacteria (Spiller, J. (2004)). Therefore, food irradiation has over 100 years of history.
Food irradiation (the application of ionizing radiation to food) is a technology that improves the
safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects
("U.S. Food and Drug Administration" 1). If food is not irradiated correctly, there may potentially be
health hazards.
The process where food is exposed from nuclear sources consists of food irradiation, which is
limited to high–energy gamma rays, X–rays and accelerated electrons. Ionizing is source of
radiation because of the high–energy free electrons from atoms and molecules. The electrically
charged particles are converted to ions. Microwaves are example of gamma rays. Accelerated
electrons can transfuse to treat the food only to a depth of three centimeters. Due to thickness of x–
rays may pass through the food.
Radiation dose is the quantity of radiation energy bored by the food as it passes through the
radiation field during processing. Needless to say the radiation for
poultry and meat were approximately 800–1400 times that dose, of fruits and vegetables. A radiation
dose of about

The Discovery of Radioactivity and its Effects Essay
During the 1800's, the late 1800's, scientist discovered radioactivity. The study of radio activity
became a phenomenon amongst scientist during this time period. With the discovery of new
elements polonium and radium by Marie and Pierre Curie, the use of radioactivity to probe the
center of an atom, provided the instructions of a nuclear weapon that will kill innocent Japanese,
leaving there face disfigured, and permanently changed. The majority of people know of the effect
of radioactivity but not how it was discovered and its close relation to physics.
The discovery of radioactivity can also be referred to the dawn of the nuclear age. Many scientist,
were interested in satisfying their curiosity and began to explore nature and the ... Show more

Just like the other scientist before him, he performed experiments to satisfy his curiosity about
radioactivity. Rutherford first, bombarded gold foil in particles from a radioactive source.
Rutherford saw that some of the particles seeming through the gold foil. Rutherford concluded that
matter was made up of empty space, but there was also a small dense portion of matter that
deflected the particles. He defined this dense area as being a nucleus. Through this finding, we were
able to find discoveries that lead to the discovery of radioactivity. Some people argue that
radioactivity should not be used at all mainly because it harms people and fatal, while others say
that it should be used for weapons in a war. From the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945
the effect of radioactivity waves are clear. The effects of radioactivity are not always through a
nuclear bomb. Radioactive waves are transmitted through the sun and cosmic radiation. This simply
means that people at higher elevations such as the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado mountains
are more expose to radioactive waves compared to people that live on or at sea level. Radioactive
waves are also transmitted through some fabricated technology, soil, and rocks. The majority of
people pose the question why do doctors or nurses where aprons when giving an x–ray. This is to
protect them from radioactive waves. Nurses give countless numbers of x–rays a day. While you

Shafer Library Research Paper
The Shafer Library and Its Many Flaws
The Shafer library is an obviously rather old building that has trouble even keeping up with all the
commodities offered by even my dorm as far as studying is concerned for example, I have a very
good computer and laptop that easily outpaces the horribly outdated tech provided by our cramped
little library. Some people might stress the importance of keeping some things the same holding
onto their quaint traditions with outstanding vigour, but sometimes things just need a good old
fashion overhaul and that's something Shafer is in dire need of. Prime examples of this are readily
evident even in your first trounce through Shafer, the beige walls give a horribly dreary feeling to all
who inhabit its creativity stifling abode, lined with paintings of old men nobody cares about, book
stands that are rarely filled, and you can tell by the lack of life in all parts of this extremely modest

The Effect Of A Light Ray Reflecting
This lab is made up of four different parts. In the first part we will examine the effects of a light ray
reflecting at different angles of incident from a convex, flat, and convex mirror. In the second part a
light ray will be refracted through a rhombus prism at different angles of incidence. We will
measure the angles using a protractor. For the third experiment we will examine the indices of
colors as light is refracted through the rhombus. Lastly, we will use polar lens to examine Brewster's
angle and polarization.
THEORY
PART A: REFLECTION
When a light ray hits a point on a plane mirror surface (called the incidence ray), it bounces off that
same point and thus changes the course in which it is traveling. An angle of incidence can be
obtained by measuring the angle between the ray of incidence and a line normal to the surface of the
mirror. The angle of the reflected ray can also be obtained in the same way by measuring the angle
between the reflected ray and the line normal to the surface. Measuring the two angles we can see
that they are the same angle thus confirming the law of reflection: Θr=Θi. Eq.1
PART B: REFRACTION
Refraction is caused when a ray of light travels through different mediums. When the light crosses
through the material it causes the light to bend or refract because the wave does not enter the
medium at

Hurricane Devastation Of New Orleans
On August 23, 2005 through August 31, 2005 a tragic moment occurred in New Orleans. People 's
lives changed by losing everything they had due to this storm. It damaged a majority of the coast
leading to massive flooded houses, everything underwater, and families not able to find their loved
ones. A band of storm clouds wrapped around the north side circulation center early the morning of
August 24th. The wind was blowing about 40 mph. The storm was originally called Tropical
Katrina. Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans early morning on Monday August 29, 2005. Over
eighty percent of the city was under some quantity of water. This storm caused more than one
hundred billion dollars in damage. Half of the city rose above sea level. August 29, 2005 was the
day the Hurricane struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. The people charged the federal
government to meet the needs of the people who was affected by the storm. There were many
questions lingering as part of the aftermath. What caused the flooding in New Orleans to be so
severe? What was the impact on the government's response? How was the city/region changed since
then?
There had been many hurricanes that have occurred in the United States but, Hurricane Katrina was
one of the deadliest hurricanes to ever hit. During this hurricane approximately 1,833 people died,
due to flooding. Levees led to a heavy flooding, numerous people had been charged by the federal

movie they portrayed his physical change great showing how he changed after starting drugs. He

Physics Of The Jsx 3222 Analyzer
The JSX–3222 analyzer is an energy–dispersive fluorescent X–ray spectrometer developed to
analyze cadmium (Cd) included in plastic and the electric wire film material, etc. promptly. The
elements range that can be measured is from sodium (Na) to uranium (U). Liquid–nitrogen cooling
for the high performance detector is needed only during the analyzing time. The vacuum and
atmosphere are switched to the measurement atmosphere by the one button operation. When X–rays
(primary X–rays) are illuminated from the X–ray tube to the specimen, fluorescence X–rays having
wavelengths (energies) peculiar to the constituent elements of the specimen are produced from the
elements.
There are two methods to investigate the energies. The first method is Qualitative analysis which
can be made by investigating the wavelengths of the fluorescence X–rays and the other method is
quantitative analysis by investigating the X–ray dose. One is for optical separation to them and the
other is to use the energy separation characteristic of the X–ray detector. The former is called the
wavelength dispersive method an: the latter the energy dispersive method. The element analyzer
employs the latter method. As seen from the figure, since the energy dispersive X–ray spectrometer
has no moving parts uses a simple optical system, its structure is simple and compact. And since the
detector can be installed the specimen, the X–ray solid angle of collection can be made large, thus

The Use of Parallelism in Fahrenheit 451 Essays
The book that will be reviewed is Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury. The author used the
effect of parallelism extremely well by showing the similarities of both then and now. In the
following paragraphs we're going to encounter these parallelisms, we will compare the book to the
time period in which it was written, and our own time period post September 11. Before we can do
this we must first get to know the author and the era in which it was based off of just a bit.
To get a clear view and understanding of the book, first must review the time period in history. The
book was written in the mid 1950's during the cold war. Former General McCarthy, then U.S.
Senator started a fire ball of suspicion, suppression, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People in that time period just wanted to distance themselves from anyone on the list due to the
government's overwhelming power, and the intense fear of losing everything they had. This society
lived when communism was feared; it ate up the freedoms they had in their society. The rights and
freedoms that were once taken for granted were now longed for. Now that there is a brief
understanding of the time period we can now take a look at the book.
The governmental control of the society in Fahrenheit 451 is unbelievable; it's unbelievable to think
that the government could have so much control. The government has so much control due to the
loss of individuality caused by conformity. According to the author, "They all say the same things
and nobody says anything different from anyone else" (Bradbury 31). This was done in several
ways; some of the ways were through the lack of books, education (or what we believe education to
be), and the lack of teachers. The influence (pure control) of the government over the media,
education, and any literature that was available to the public. The media and entertainment is
controlled by the government to the point that its citizens have better relationships with media
personalities than with their own families. The government grasped the rights of education by not
educating and allowing its students to run a muck. According to the author, "Clarisse – I'm afraid of
children my own age. They kill each other" (Bradbury

The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, is a science–fiction book and was written in 1946. This
major work by Bradbury is a collection of short stories relating to Mars or Martians. Bradbury had a

the Martians point of view. In this work, the humans from Earth are the aliens from outer space.

In his ninth story, 'The Locusts';, Ray Bradbury uses similies to envoke a response from the reader.
He makes the many rockets that are landing on Mars to be just like locusts, swarming over a
concentrated area and destroying it. 'And from the rockets ran men with hammers in their hands to
beat the strange world into a shape that was familiar to the eye, to bludgeon away all the
strangeness, their mouths fringed with nails so they resembled steel–toothed carnivores, spitting
them into their swift hands as they hammered up frame cottages and scuttled over roofs with
shingles to blot out the eerie stars, and fit green shades to pull against the night.'; The reader sees
from the similies that the rockets were overwhelming to the Martians and they were only pests, they
did not help.
Another theme Bradbury uses to gain the reader's attention is time travel. In his tenth story in The
Martian Chronicles, 'Night Meeting';, Bradbury uses time travel to convey more of his ideas of
Mars. 'There was a smell of Time in the air tonight. He smiled and turned the fancy in his mind.
There was a thought. What did Time smell like? Like dust and clocks and people?'; Bradbury uses
all of man's senses to express his feelings of what exactly Time is. By doing so, the reader has a
clearer understanding of Bradbury's point of view. 'He

Ray Charles : The Devil 's Advocate And La Bamba
The biography/drama based on the worldwide entertainer Ray Charles is directed by Taylor
Hackford, who is known for his other works such as The Devil's Advocate and La Bamba. In this
2004 film, Hackford along with sound designer Scott Sanders, sound supervisor Karen Baker

introduction credits of the film begin with complete silence, at first I was worried that there was
something wrong with my computer speakers because the first few seconds there was no sound. Just
as I was about to log into my system preferences, music begins to play from what sounded a record
player. The music within the credits sounded like a genuine record player playing with the singers

incorporating as much music created by Ray Charles as possible. While esearching composer, Craig

other films that they have worked on. Comparing the music in Ray to other works I noticed that
both have worked on films that incorporate themes of comedy, thriller or drama such as The Great

The Pedestrian Essay
Utopia and dystopia:
Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian"
Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" is a dramatic illustration of the dangers of living in a
world where contact with nature is deemed so abnormal that even walking alone at night is a crime.
The dystopian story revolves around the tale of a man named Leonard Mead, living during a time
period not so far away from our own, in 2053 CE. In the story, a robotic police car is so suspicious
of Mead's walking behavior during one pleasant night that he is taken away to a psychiatric hospital.

In many communities, walking 'behavior' does appear to be unusual, because it looks so uncommon,
despite the natural physiological aspect of walking. Riding in a car is seen as more normal, just like
a robotic policeman is seen as more normal in the Bradbury story. Today, people do still walk, but
often on a moving conveyor belt at the gym, rather in a real environment. This takes people away
from nature and a sense of being part of something larger than themselves. Although Bradbury does
not specifically discuss the physical risks of inactivity, the nation's climbing obesity rate is clear
evidence of the fact that Americans are moving less and instead turning to sedentary pastimes to
unwind. From Bradbury's perspective in time, the dangers of television were the greatest risk posed
to enjoying hands–on, real world activities. Today, there are even more varied sedentary
distractions, spanning from the Internet, to mobile phones, to video games. In the modern world, we
are increasingly categorized by our technological devices. Our cellphones, cars, and computers
define our identities, rather than our bodies. We are losing the ability to amuse ourselves in the
outside world. But it is our connection to nature, stripped of technology, which is essential to our
individuality, not the programs we watch on television–or the appearance of our cellphones.
Bradbury's dystopian story provides a warning that is clearly not being heeded. Although we may
have more technological

Censorship Is Monitoring Or Withholding Information Essay
Censorship is monitoring or withholding information. The information can come from a book,
drama, media, or any other form of entertainment; but it is usually considered a threat to the
consumer. Yet the consumer is not always the audience. Sometimes the threat is to a politician or
government official. The debate over topics in the realm of what is acceptable and what should be
banned only continues to rise as more taboo topics become acceptable. Some argue that keeping
certain things behind closed doors is imperative for a harmonious living place. Others say that a
small discourse is critical to remain sane. Censorship is a way of protecting society from itself.
Leaders and parental figures can make the choice to monitor what is read, watched, and consumed,
but until the world lives the life worthy of a children's' book the effort is futile. While the narrative
being taught may be inappropriate or harsher it doesn't decrease the value of it.
Arguments are shown throughout everyday life over every topic. The question isn't, "When will
society stop fighting the norm?" The question is, "When will society stop fighting change?" The
world evolves with every second. With that evolution society blurs the line with what is acceptable
and not. Sixty years ago the idea of two boys kissing was the equivalent of burning a baby in church
on a Sunday morning. Today, two men kissing is celebrated with its' own parade. Social norms and
ideals have been ripping down the cloak of

however MRI's do not fit in the average waiting room by being circular tube like machines that take
about 1 hour to produce a clear image of a patient's problem. MRI's are great when it comes to
mental disabilities but when it comes to broken bones, it is too time consuming to wait in the
machine for an hour to find out about a torn ligament or broken bone in a patient's body. A new
vision will take away the harmless effects of an MRI but also have it for every day needs in a
doctor's office. X–Ray Vision goggles would allow a doctor to see a patient's broken bone or
ligaments without effects of X–rays. Present Technology
Wilhelm Rontgen, a German physicist, had multiple experiments in 1895 he and found a type of
radiation which he labelled as the letter X, because he did not know what it was. His X–rays were
soon discovered by Doctors which primarily used them to look inside the human body. One original
component that has not changed since has been how they are developed and made.
X–Ray's are used to generate pictures that show the inside of the human body such as finding
broken bones. In Otto Zhou of the University of North Carolina, Dr Zhou and his colleagues are
bringing X–radiography into the world of modern electronics. In doing so, there is a hope to create

X-Rays: From Discovery to Practical Application Essay
X–rays
This is a scientific report on x–rays, it's history, uses, implications and other relevant facts. More
relevance will be given to its medical uses/ importance as it was the most beneficial trait that x–rays
brought.
X–rays were discovered in 1895 when Wilhelm Conrad Röentgen was doing some experiments with
electron beams in a gas discharge tube and observed a glow in one of his fluorescent screens
whenever the electron beam was on.
It was a fact that fluorescent material usually glowed in reaction to magnetic radiation but the gas
discharge tube was surrounded by heavy black cardboard which was assumed by Roentgen to block
most of the radiation. Confused and curious, Roentgen then put several objects between the tube and

The denser areas are shown as white while the soft areas appear dark in the film but sometimes
some organs may block x–rays from showing broken or cracked bones and for this reason CAT
(Computer Axial Tomography) was invented. Firstly, the person requiring the scan is put inside of a
scanner, which is a long tube–shaped machine and then x–rayed from all angles, after a computer
puts all of the images together so that doctors can analyse them. CAT are mainly used for head and
brain injuries and appropriate shielded should be provided to cover the areas not being x–rayed.
At the dentist the same principle applies, x–ray film is put in one side of the teeth and x–rays are
shot through the jaw, metal is more absorbent than teeth and bones so any filling on the teeth would
appear lighter in the x–ray film. Fig. 2
Exposure limits exist to prevent exposure and limit chronic exposure to "acceptable" levels because
in fact there is no safe level of exposure as there is always a small probability of exposure being the
cause of some ailments, like cancer. It is then recommended to keep levels of exposure "as low as
reasonable achievable" (ALARA).
A person can safely get up to 300 simple x–rays a year or 5 CAT (Computed Axial Tomography)
scans and the risk of developing cancer would only increase by 1% as in most cases the cells that
get damaged due to radiation die prematurely. The amount of cell damage from an x–ray is many
times less than

Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine has been around for more than 50 years now and stems from the discovery of x–
rays and artificial radioactivity. In 1946, nuclear medicine made a monumental breakthrough when
radioactive iodine led to the complete disappearance of cancer in a patient's thyroid. Nuclear
medicine became widely used in the 1950's to measure the function of the thyroid, to diagnose
thyroid disease, and for the treatment of patients with hyperthyroidism. By the 1970's nuclear
medicine was used to visualize other organs of the body other than the thyroid such as scanning of
the liver and spleen, localizing brain tumors, and images of the gastrointestinal track. The use of
digital computers and detection of heart disease arose in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Man Ray 's Life Style
Man Ray
Early Life
Man Ray, was born Emmanuel Radnitzky (August 27,1890 – November 18, 1976), Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. he was an accomplished American painter, filmmaker, sculptor, illustrator, Dadaist
and Surrealist, and photographer. Being a Dadaist and Surrealist he was a huge contributor for the
movement while it lasted. He was known for documenting the lavished life style in France.
He spent most of his life living in France and America; he spent 42 years in America and 44 years in
France. Man Ray was born the son of a Jewish immigrant family from Russia. Him and his family
moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was young. It is said that in the early midst of 1912 The,
Radnitzky family changed their surname to Ray. Emmanuel decided to use, "Man Ray." Other
sources say he changed it to. ""Man", representing himself, and "Ray" represented of a 'ray of light'
or 'of the sun" (Fargler).
In high school Emmanuel was awarded with a scholarship to study architecture at New York
University, but did not accept the scholarship. His pursue of art led him to join the, Art students
League, and Academy of Design. His work was very similar to Alfred Stieglitz (1864 – 1946) whom
he was vary influenced by. In 1913 he visited Stieglitz modern art at 291 Gallery located in
Midtown Manhattan.
When older Man Ray would move to Ridgefield, New Jersey. From this time of Man Ray's life, he
was painting landscapes with brash, bright color palettes. In New Jersey Man Ray met a young lady

Essay about Ray Charles
Ray Charles
Ray Charles was a revolutionary pianist and a soul singer who helped shape the sound of rhythm
and blues. He brought a soulful sound to everything from country music to pop standards to "God
Bless America." His birth name was Ray Charles Robinson, but he shortened it when he entered
show business to avoid confusion with the famous boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. I chose Ray Charles
as the topic for my paper after seeing the movie Ray. After viewing this film I realized that there
was a lot of interesting information about Ray Charles that I had never heard about. Therefore, the
focus of my paper is to learn who Ray Charles really was and to discuss his life and achievements.

During this time he started recording and achieved his first hit song in 1951. The song was titled
"Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand." When Charles first began singing many felt as though his sound
and piano playing resembled those of Nat King Cole and Charles Brown. Ray was quoted saying,
"When I started to sing like myself – as opposed to imitating Nat Cole, which I had done for a while
– when I started singing like Ray Charles, it had this spiritual and churchy, this religious or gospel
sound. It had this holiness and preachy tone to it. It was very controversial. I got a lot of criticism
for it." – (San Jose Mercury News, 1994) Charles soon became more innovative when he realized
that his first recordings were only skillful imitations of his heroes. After joining Atlantic Records,
Charles's sound became more and more original and found breaking. He took many tunes from
gospel music and put them to secular lyrics performed in front of a jazz lineup playing R&B with
exceptionally tight arrangements. He sometimes even added a country music feel to some of his
arrangements for example in his version of Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On."
The Middle Years "Do it right or don't do it at all. That comes from my mom. If there's something I
want to do, I'm one of those people that won't be satisfied until I get it done. If I'm trying to sing
something and I can't get it, I'm going to keep at it until I get it where I want it." –

In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Books consist of more than just paper, books act as warning to society. Books put actions into
perspective, then they show the consequences of those actions. Books continue to make people
reevaluate their decisions, make a person feel, and books relate to real life. In Fahrenheit 451 by
Ray Bradbury the society remains dysfunctional and on the brink of collapsing; suicide rates remain
at an all time high, murders happen every day, information stays censored, the education system
remains flawed. Now, all of these things can also describe another society, America. The fictional
society in Fahrenheit 451 and America have many things in common, only proving further, that
America remains on a downward spiral. First, modern American society relates to the society in
Fahrenheit 451 through education. In Fahrenheit 451 schools have the kids sit in a classroom and
learn from a TV. When Clarisse a seventeen year old girl who lives next to the protagonist, asks
questions about the school work, the other kids call her peculiar. While talking with Montag, the
main character in the book, Montag asks about school, Clarisse tells him "I'm antisocial, they say. I
don't mix." (26) she only wants to comprehend the topic better, and the other teens ridicule her. In
both America and in Fahrenheit 451 the education system remains faulty and unsuccessful.
Education in America prevails horrible, approximately 70 percent of eighth grade students read
below the standard expected from them. Other

How Can A Game Possibly Change Someone 's Life? Essay
How can a game possibly change someone's life? People from the outside looking in often think
sports are merely meaningless competitions with no end result other than a winner and a loser.
Although I love to come out as the victor in every competition, I know there is more to sports than
what the stat sheets say. They can be life changing if you transfer what you learn on the court or
field into real life situations. Basketball has certainly taught me many things including working with
others, persevering through difficult circumstances, and learning to overcome past mistakes. One
particular game my sophomore year in the regional semifinal game against LaPoynor made me
realize what the game was actually teaching me. There was so much excitement in the huge locker
room. My team and I had been waiting for this day since the beginning of the season. We had
worked so hard that winter and we knew we deserved to be here playing in the regional semifinal
game. We poured our blood, sweat, and tears into every game, practice, and workout. We were just
two games away from making it to the state tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The only thing
standing in our way was the LaPoynor Lady Flyers. I had been competing against their point guard
since we were in elementary. She was quick, smart, and skilled, but we were ready to shut her down.
The music was blaring through the speakers in the locker room as I stared at the floor envisioning
what I needed to do to defeat my opponent. Every

Physics Of Physics Regarding Light Rays
I have always been interested in the way light travels, not just in how, but also in all the other factors
that affect the light rays, including the speed, the velocity, the distance, as well as others. In my past
years of school, I had been able to explore areas of physics concerning light rays, as part of my
physics course. However, I had previously only learned the basic principles, such as the laws of
refraction and reflection. Because I chose to focus on Chemistry and Biology, I was not given the
opportunity to delve deeper into the subject, and had only obtained basic understanding of it.
Although I knew of the principles and what they represented, I did not become fully aware of the
fact that the principles were based off of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, we want the light to bounce off a mirror or to pass through a piece of glass on its way
from A to B. Fermat 's principle states that of all the possible paths the light might take, that satisfy
those boundary conditions, light takes the path which requires the shortest time.
(A more accurate statement of Fermat's principle: Any hypothetical small change in the actual path
of a light ray would only result in a second order change in the optical path length. The first order
change in the optical path length would be zero.)
Consider the diagram on the right. We want light to leave point A, bounce off the mirror, and get to
point B. Let the perpendicular distance from the mirror of both A and B be d and the shortest
distance between the points be D. Assume that light takes the path shown. The length of this path is
then:
Since the speed of light is the same everywhere along all possible paths, the shortest path requires
the shortest time. To find the shortest path, I differentiated L with respect to x and set the result
equal to zero. (I did this in order to yield an extremum/minimum in the function or the derivative of
L(x).) And thus obtained the value of the least amount of time.
After canceling equal terms on both sides I was left with:
or

Symptoms And Treatment Of Infection Control
Infection Control
Since the manual handling task requires close contact with the patient, all handlers should follow
strict infection control protocols in ICU. A recent study showed that by strictly following infection
control protocols the incidence of hospital–acquired infections could be reduced (8). In addition, an
observational study concluded that better hospital–wide infection control would reduce the number
of MRSA–positive patients admitted to ICU and acquisition of MRSA within ICU (9). Therefore, it
is important to minimize the spread of the infection by performing the following aseptic techniques.
Hand washing is the most important methods of preventing the spread of infection (7).
Radiographers should wash their hands before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there is no universal approach and best practices must be adapted to fit the epidemiology
of specific ICUs and should also consider the available resources (10).
Radiation safety
Radiation safety of patients, radiographers and other individuals in ICU should be considered
according to the "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) principle. General radiation safety
principles include time, distance and shielding (7). Since the patient is male, no pregnancy check is
needed.
To protect the patient, the length of time that a patient remains in the path of the x–ray beam should
be minimized. Therefore, it is important for radiographers to avoid unnecessary repeats and thus
unnecessary exposure. Gonad shielding should be used on patients if possible, which is particularly
important for young patients. In addition, proper collimations and adjusted exposure factors should
be applied according to patient situations to minimize radiation dose (7).
Radiographers should protect themselves as well. The time spent in radiation fields should be
limited by taking shifts. Radiographers should stand as far away from source as possible to increase
distance between radiation source and themselves. They should stand behind appropriate radiation
shields or, more commonly, wear appropriate protection (7). According to a previous study, lead
apron is the most common method of radiation protection as it may

The Chef Menteur Landfill
Introduction The recovery effort following Hurricane Katrina presented various challenges for many
communities throughout New Orleans trying to rebuild their lives. The Village of Versailles is one
such community, however, the Vietnamese–American community that populates the village has a
history of being ignored and marginalized from decisions impacting their home, particularly with
regards to the opening of the Chef Menteur landfill. This paper takes a look at the historical context
of the Chef Menteur landfill to better understand the major stakeholders including the Vietnamese–
American community, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Louisiana
Environmental Action Network. It also sets forth perform a stakeholder analysis to coordinate each
stakeholder to develop a monitoring and reporting plan for the Chef Menteur landfill. Using Colin

Fahrenheit 451: The Future is Now Essay
Truffaut's treatment of the Nazi regime in comparison to the firemen in his film shows the type of
government he desired to depict, one that "succinctly and successfully institutionalized mass
schizophrenia," a government founded on the "murderous ideologies" of "Communism and Nazism"
(Gonzalez 1), a totalitarian society mirroring the world in Bradbury's novel among other dystopian
novels of the time. His society fits the idea of totalitarianism in the fact that it is a "form of

When on the train with Clarisse and she asks if she may speak with him, Montag grants her
permission to speak, but cannot "promise to think of anything to answer." He has been thoroughly
conditioned by society to carry on without question, a mindless automaton piloted by the self–
interested ideas of a totalitarian government.
Over the course of the film, symbols and instances of censorship have made themselves more than
clear. Many of the books shown burning–such as "Madame Bovary and Lolita"–were, in their own
histories, victims of censorship. The entire idea of book burning, in fact, is a form of censorship
utilized by cultures throughout the course of history, notably the book burnings that took place in
communist Russia, China, and Nazi Germany (Bradbury)–the numerous documented book burnings
at the hands of the Nazis were the "most emotive and probably the readiest point of censorship
debates in this period" (Harrison 55). Because in the world of Fahrenheit 451 "every written word is
considered inherently censorable, and inherently subversive . . . every book represents a challenge to
authority" (Harrison 56). The book people are created in order to overcome this censorship and
stand as "political radicals" (Harrison 57) and that, by removing themselves from an oppressive

Essay on Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury was a dreamer. Bradbury had a skill at putting his dreams onto paper, and into books.
He dreams dreams of magic and transformation, good and evil, small–town America and the canals

not hard to publish, and keep in the public eye. His stories have stayed in print for nearly three
decades.
Ray Bradbury was born on August 22, 1920, in a small town of Waukegan,
Illinois. His parents were Leonard Spaulding and Esther Moberg Bradbury. His mother, Esther

After graduation Bradbury sold newspapers until he saved up enough money to buy a typewriter and
rent a small office. In the early 1940's his stories appeared regularly in Weird Tales. "I sold a
story every month there for three or four years when I was (in my early twenties). Made the
magnificent sum of twenty dollars for each story." Bradbury sold his first stories in 1945 to
"slick" magazines – Collier's, Charm, and Mademoiselle.
Shortly after his marriage to Marguerite Susan McClure in 1947,
Bradbury's first book, Dark Carnival, was published by Arkham House. About this time, the idea for
an important book about Mars, a collection of loosely connected stories, came to Bradbury.
The subjects that engage Bradbury's pen are many: magic, horror, and monsters; rockets, robots,
time and space travel; growing up in the Midwest town in the 1920's, and growing old in an
abandoned Earth colony on another planet.
Despite their themes, his stories contain a sense of wonder, often a sense of joy, and a lyrical and
rhythimic touch that sets his work apart.
Using an analytical approach to such stories is to do a kind of violence to them, but between the

A Comparative Analysis Of Bradbury 's Style
Adam Choquette Period 7 Honors English II Mr. Coulter October 28, 2015 A Comparative Analysis
of Bradbury's Style As Seen in Something Wicked This Way Comes and Fahrenheit 451
Ray Bradbury was an American author who many argue revolutionized the concept of science
fiction writing. Many SF writers commend technology, yet Bradbury is quick to vocalize the danger
of it. He is not afraid of conforming to the regular standards of science fiction and is not afraid to
voice his thoughts about technology. The story of Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel where
futuristic 'firemen' burn books. The title mentions the number 451 which is the degree at which
books burn. Bradbury portrays immense government control while technology is ruining the lives of
individuals. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a novel about two boys, Will Halloway and Jim
Nightshade who encounter a carnival led by the cryptic Mr. Dark, who has the mysterious power to
grant people their innermost desire. Bradbury does not credit his style to one individual or group. He
once said, "In writing, you operate on yourself and save yourself." He incorporates a vast amount of
figurative language and stylistic devices into his works including dichotomy, which differentiates

Ct Scans : The Applications And Opportunities That A Ct...
Question: What is a CT scan? Are the applications and opportunities that a CT scan offers worth the
negatives and risks that come along with it?
Introduction:
A CT scan, also known as computed tomography, utilises the computed compiling of many X–rays
taken from all different directions around an object in order to form tomographic images of precise
areas of the object, allowing one to see inside the object without incision. Because of the
involvement with gamma rays in the process of a CT scan, there is an, albeit small, increase in the
risk of developing cancer every time a scan is performed. This small payoff is almost always worth
it, as CT scans play a huge part in not only modern medical imaging, but has more recently been ...

Discussion:
A gamma ray is a form of electromagnetic radiation that consists of high–energy protons due to its
extremely high frequency wavelengths. Gamma rays ionizing radiation, meaning that they are
hazardous because they carry enough energy to free electrons from atoms and molecules, this, in
turn, gives them higher penetrating power than any other form of radiation. Another type of
electromagnetic radiation is X–radiation, which shares the name of its components, X–rays, with the
well–known medical imaging method. While these two are scientifically classified as separate forms
of radiation, they are extremely similar to the point where there is only two known ways to
determine if the radiation being emitted is one or the other, and both of these methods have cases
where there are exceptions. The first method is to compare where the radiation is originating from,
with regular gamma rays coming from the nucleus of an atom and X–rays being emitted by
electrons. This method has two primary issues, being that 1– the precise point of origin cannot
always be pinpointed and 2– that there are actually a number of much less common processes that
can produce the same high–energy photons. The second method is to determine the variant of rays
by the wavelength of the radiation, with any wavelength shorter than some

The Impact of Burning Fossil Fuels on Climate Change

  • 1. The Burning Of Petroleum Based Fuels Can you see the light? As the burning of petroleum–based fuels, natural gases, and coal continues, smog will continue to cover the sky. Pollution from said burning occurs as greenhouse gases and chemicals. Specifically, petroleum–based fuels, natural gases, and coal release energy when heat breaks the bonds between hydrogens and carbons, generating energy and releasing carbon dioxide and water as byproducts. This energy often originates from stored energy preserved in organisms that eventually died and lingered in the crust. The byproduct carbon dioxide is the most dominant of the greenhouse gases, which are gases that absorb and release thermal energy from the Sun. These gases trap thermal energy in the atmosphere while releasing a small amount into space. Global warming occurs due to the trapping of this heat. Their covering of the sky and Sun reduces the amount of sunlight that can reach the Earth. In addition, these energy sources are also bulky and inefficient. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (2014), producing even one kilowatt–hour of energy (one kilowatt of electricity expended in one hour), 0.08 gallons of petroleum–based fuel, 1000 cubic feet of natural gases, and 1.09 pounds of coal ("How much coal, natural gas, or petroleum is used to generate a kilowatt–hour 1 of electricity?"). Despite the availability of alternative energy sources, most people prefer these "dirty" energy sources. Solar power shows promise as a potential alternative. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Todd Grayson Case Study Chapter Four: Todd Grayson & lAPORSHA BROWN Todd grayson is unkind, courageous, jealous, and seemed to be showing a few traits of his father, Shawn. Todd always seemed to have a odd look on his face, as if he was hiding something. At only 6 years old he was caught shop lifting on numerous occasions and was already starting to hang out with a few of the bad kinds on the street. This put his mother Laporsha in a tough spot when it came to her parenting. She wanted all the help she could get for her son Todd, but didn't want to expose the fact that had been seeing Shawn, her brothers enemy. Her mind always dwelled on this, and she knew that there would once come a day when Todd and his father were revealed to her brother. Until then, however, she'd been keeping herself busy with a part time job as a waitress in Monti Carle' bar. She'd also been cleaning a old lady's house as a side job and got paid under the table. This was just enough to help her and Todd get by. She'd always worry that one day when she was out at work, Shawn might decide to run away. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She'd never smelled human flesh before, but the aroma around her definitely told her this could be the first time she had smelled it. the minute Laporsha saw human flesh bone she knew dad the town beverly hills is no longer the town it used to be . One written by Ray Bradbury in 1950's and titled "The Whole Towns Sleeping". The other was written by Wilkie Collins in 1856 and entitled "A Terribly Strange Bed". "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is about a middle–aged spinster called "Lavinia" 37, who goes to the cinema with her friends while a mysterious killer, is at large. She is fully convinced that the killer would not strike again for another four weeks because a murder has just occurred, and they seem to happen at intervals when 'the moon is full', and superstitiously then 'men do strange things' because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is set in a small town in Illinois, U.S.A. A ravine runs straight through the middle "The ravine cut the town in two". The ravine is the mysterious area of the town like a 'black dynamo', surrounded by 'secret mists' and 'odours' of a "rank greenhouse". The description of the ravine creates tension and shows it to be a constant threat with its dark and gloomy images. In "A Terribly Strange Bed" the main part of the story is set in the back street of a seedy gambling house in Paris. The atmosphere is described, "Here, there was nothing but tragedy – mute weird tragedy. The quiet in the room was horrible". This builds up tension effectively, and creates an effective image of the gamblers as they watch in silence, and their desperate need to win to survive. Lavinia Nebbs the protagonist in "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is described as "very straight and slim", a typical spinster who has lots of confidence in herself, and quite sensible, but occasionally craves excitement, which inevitably will lead her to make errors in judgment. She insists that she stays at her own home and declines several offers of a bed for the night, even though 'The Lonely One' is still on the loose, and despite warnings she insists she will still walk home alone. • 4. Ray Bradbury 's Fahrenheit 451 Have you ever stopped to wonder how modern technology has shaped our society, and where it will lead our future of 'social' interaction? Have you ever been sitting and listening to the news, when you hear a new story on yet another book being banned for some petty reason, such as 'protection of children's innocence' or 'offensive content'? Have you thought about where such things will take us and our changing, evolving definition of socializing? If you belong with those who contemplate things, who turn things over in their minds, who don't allow themselves to use ignorance as a shield from difficult, complex thinking, you may have answered 'yes'. Knowledge, wisdom, and logical reasoning are important to today's society, but unfortunately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oh, to scratch that itch, eh? Well, Montag, take my word for it, I've had to read a few in my time, to know what I was about, and the books say nothing! Nothing you can teach or believe. ... You come away lost.'" (Bradbury 59) He explains that the words in books do not seem to be of any value, and that reading them gives the reader not a speck of insight into any aspect of life. In this society, his words ring true for almost everyone, except those who managed to learn before the schools shut down and those who yearned to understand what books say. Furthermore, Beatty's attempts to force Montag into the mold of this society pushes the man to search for wisdom in the depths of literature. Beatty spurs Montag to delve into the world of literature. He dares the man to defy him in an almost mocking tone – such as here: "We'd certainly miss you if you didn't show." (60) Here he implies that if Montag does not show up to burn his book, it will not be good news for him. Beatty is a strict man always following and enforcing the rules, seldom deviating from them, and is a man of his word. He knows Montag is hiding something, which he intuitively guesses is a book, and he promises indirectly that he will be back to burn down the man's house if he does not bring it in within twenty– four hours. Afraid of losing his one chance of learning, he frantically vows to try to memorize a part of the Bible he stole from the woman who committed suicide. The mere suggestion of the fire captain ... • 5. The Effects Of Food Irradiation Practices On The United... Overview of the history of food irradiation practices in the United States from World War II era to the end of the 20th century, and speculation about its future commercial prospects. Researchers in the United States and Great Britain filed patents in 1905 for using ionizing radiation to kill food– borne bacteria (Spiller, J. (2004)). Therefore, food irradiation has over 100 years of history. Food irradiation (the application of ionizing radiation to food) is a technology that improves the safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects ("U.S. Food and Drug Administration" 1). If food is not irradiated correctly, there may potentially be health hazards. The process where food is exposed from nuclear sources consists of food irradiation, which is limited to high–energy gamma rays, X–rays and accelerated electrons. Ionizing is source of radiation because of the high–energy free electrons from atoms and molecules. The electrically charged particles are converted to ions. Microwaves are example of gamma rays. Accelerated electrons can transfuse to treat the food only to a depth of three centimeters. Due to thickness of x– rays may pass through the food. Radiation dose is the quantity of radiation energy bored by the food as it passes through the radiation field during processing. Needless to say the radiation for poultry and meat were approximately 800–1400 times that dose, of fruits and vegetables. A radiation dose of about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Discovery of Radioactivity and its Effects Essay During the 1800's, the late 1800's, scientist discovered radioactivity. The study of radio activity became a phenomenon amongst scientist during this time period. With the discovery of new elements polonium and radium by Marie and Pierre Curie, the use of radioactivity to probe the center of an atom, provided the instructions of a nuclear weapon that will kill innocent Japanese, leaving there face disfigured, and permanently changed. The majority of people know of the effect of radioactivity but not how it was discovered and its close relation to physics. The discovery of radioactivity can also be referred to the dawn of the nuclear age. Many scientist, were interested in satisfying their curiosity and began to explore nature and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like the other scientist before him, he performed experiments to satisfy his curiosity about radioactivity. Rutherford first, bombarded gold foil in particles from a radioactive source. Rutherford saw that some of the particles seeming through the gold foil. Rutherford concluded that matter was made up of empty space, but there was also a small dense portion of matter that deflected the particles. He defined this dense area as being a nucleus. Through this finding, we were able to find discoveries that lead to the discovery of radioactivity. Some people argue that radioactivity should not be used at all mainly because it harms people and fatal, while others say that it should be used for weapons in a war. From the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 the effect of radioactivity waves are clear. The effects of radioactivity are not always through a nuclear bomb. Radioactive waves are transmitted through the sun and cosmic radiation. This simply means that people at higher elevations such as the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado mountains are more expose to radioactive waves compared to people that live on or at sea level. Radioactive waves are also transmitted through some fabricated technology, soil, and rocks. The majority of people pose the question why do doctors or nurses where aprons when giving an x–ray. This is to protect them from radioactive waves. Nurses give countless numbers of x–rays a day. While you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shafer Library Research Paper The Shafer Library and Its Many Flaws The Shafer library is an obviously rather old building that has trouble even keeping up with all the commodities offered by even my dorm as far as studying is concerned for example, I have a very good computer and laptop that easily outpaces the horribly outdated tech provided by our cramped little library. Some people might stress the importance of keeping some things the same holding onto their quaint traditions with outstanding vigour, but sometimes things just need a good old fashion overhaul and that's something Shafer is in dire need of. Prime examples of this are readily evident even in your first trounce through Shafer, the beige walls give a horribly dreary feeling to all who inhabit its creativity stifling abode, lined with paintings of old men nobody cares about, book stands that are rarely filled, and you can tell by the lack of life in all parts of this extremely modest library that this ... • 8. The Effect Of A Light Ray Reflecting This lab is made up of four different parts. In the first part we will examine the effects of a light ray reflecting at different angles of incident from a convex, flat, and convex mirror. In the second part a light ray will be refracted through a rhombus prism at different angles of incidence. We will measure the angles using a protractor. For the third experiment we will examine the indices of colors as light is refracted through the rhombus. Lastly, we will use polar lens to examine Brewster's angle and polarization. THEORY PART A: REFLECTION When a light ray hits a point on a plane mirror surface (called the incidence ray), it bounces off that same point and thus changes the course in which it is traveling. An angle of incidence can be obtained by measuring the angle between the ray of incidence and a line normal to the surface of the mirror. The angle of the reflected ray can also be obtained in the same way by measuring the angle between the reflected ray and the line normal to the surface. Measuring the two angles we can see that they are the same angle thus confirming the law of reflection: Θr=Θi. Eq.1 PART B: REFRACTION Refraction is caused when a ray of light travels through different mediums. When the light crosses through the material it causes the light to bend or refract because the wave does not enter the medium at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Physics Of The Jsx 3222 Analyzer The JSX–3222 analyzer is an energy–dispersive fluorescent X–ray spectrometer developed to analyze cadmium (Cd) included in plastic and the electric wire film material, etc. promptly. The elements range that can be measured is from sodium (Na) to uranium (U). Liquid–nitrogen cooling for the high performance detector is needed only during the analyzing time. The vacuum and atmosphere are switched to the measurement atmosphere by the one button operation. When X–rays (primary X–rays) are illuminated from the X–ray tube to the specimen, fluorescence X–rays having wavelengths (energies) peculiar to the constituent elements of the specimen are produced from the elements. There are two methods to investigate the energies. The first method is Qualitative analysis which can be made by investigating the wavelengths of the fluorescence X–rays and the other method is quantitative analysis by investigating the X–ray dose. One is for optical separation to them and the other is to use the energy separation characteristic of the X–ray detector. The former is called the wavelength dispersive method an: the latter the energy dispersive method. The element analyzer employs the latter method. As seen from the figure, since the energy dispersive X–ray spectrometer has no moving parts uses a simple optical system, its structure is simple and compact. And since the detector can be installed the specimen, the X–ray solid angle of collection can be made large, thus presenting many features such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Use of Parallelism in Fahrenheit 451 Essays The book that will be reviewed is Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury. The author used the effect of parallelism extremely well by showing the similarities of both then and now. In the following paragraphs we're going to encounter these parallelisms, we will compare the book to the time period in which it was written, and our own time period post September 11. Before we can do this we must first get to know the author and the era in which it was based off of just a bit. To get a clear view and understanding of the book, first must review the time period in history. The book was written in the mid 1950's during the cold war. This society lived when communism was feared; it ate up the freedoms they had in their society. The rights and freedoms that were once taken for granted were now longed for. Now that there is a brief understanding of the time period we can now take a look at the book. The governmental control of the society in Fahrenheit 451 is unbelievable; it's unbelievable to think that the government could have so much control. The government has so much control due to the loss of individuality caused by conformity. According to the author, "They all say the same things and nobody says anything different from anyone else" (Bradbury 31). This was done in several ways; some of the ways were through the lack of books, education (or what we believe education to be), and the lack of teachers. The influence (pure control) of the government over the media, education, and any literature that was available to the public. The media and entertainment is controlled by the government to the point that its citizens have better relationships with media personalities than with their own families. The government grasped the rights of education by not educating and allowing its students to run a muck. According to the author, "Clarisse – I'm afraid of children my own age. He makes the many rockets that are landing on Mars to be just like locusts, swarming over a concentrated area and destroying it. 'And from the rockets ran men with hammers in their hands to beat the strange world into a shape that was familiar to the eye, to bludgeon away all the strangeness, their mouths fringed with nails so they resembled steel–toothed carnivores, spitting them into their swift hands as they hammered up frame cottages and scuttled over roofs with shingles to blot out the eerie stars, and fit green shades to pull against the night.'; The reader sees from the similies that the rockets were overwhelming to the Martians and they were only pests, they did not help. Another theme Bradbury uses to gain the reader's attention is time travel. In his tenth story in The Martian Chronicles, 'Night Meeting';, Bradbury uses time travel to convey more of his ideas of Mars. 'There was a smell of Time in the air tonight. He smiled and turned the fancy in his mind. There was a thought. What did Time smell like? Like dust and clocks and people?'; Bradbury uses all of man's senses to express his feelings of what exactly Time is. By doing so, the reader has a clearer understanding of Bradbury's point of view. In this 2004 film, Hackford along with sound designer Scott Sanders, sound supervisor Karen Baker Landers and composer Craig Armstrong musically bring to life the life of the famous performer. The introduction credits of the film begin with complete silence, at first I was worried that there was something wrong with my computer speakers because the first few seconds there was no sound. The music within the credits sounded like a genuine record player playing with the singers scratchy warm vocals. The Pedestrian Essay Utopia and dystopia: Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" is a dramatic illustration of the dangers of living in a world where contact with nature is deemed so abnormal that even walking alone at night is a crime. The dystopian story revolves around the tale of a man named Leonard Mead, living during a time period not so far away from our own, in 2053 CE. In the story, a robotic police car is so suspicious of Mead's walking behavior during one pleasant night that he is taken away to a psychiatric hospital. In the new world, desiring televised rather than real experience is considered 'normal.' People only venture out during the day when it is required for their work. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In many communities, walking 'behavior' does appear to be unusual, because it looks so uncommon, despite the natural physiological aspect of walking. Riding in a car is seen as more normal, just like a robotic policeman is seen as more normal in the Bradbury story. Today, people do still walk, but often on a moving conveyor belt at the gym, rather in a real environment. This takes people away from nature and a sense of being part of something larger than themselves. Although Bradbury does not specifically discuss the physical risks of inactivity, the nation's climbing obesity rate is clear evidence of the fact that Americans are moving less and instead turning to sedentary pastimes to unwind. From Bradbury's perspective in time, the dangers of television were the greatest risk posed to enjoying hands–on, real world activities. Today, there are even more varied sedentary distractions, spanning from the Internet, to mobile phones, to video games. In the modern world, we are increasingly categorized by our technological devices. Our cellphones, cars, and computers define our identities, rather than our bodies. We are losing the ability to amuse ourselves in the outside world. But it is our connection to nature, stripped of technology, which is essential to our individuality, not the programs we watch on television–or the appearance of our cellphones. • 19. Censorship Is Monitoring Or Withholding Information Essay Censorship is monitoring or withholding information. The information can come from a book, drama, media, or any other form of entertainment; but it is usually considered a threat to the consumer. Yet the consumer is not always the audience. Sometimes the threat is to a politician or government official. The debate over topics in the realm of what is acceptable and what should be banned only continues to rise as more taboo topics become acceptable. Some argue that keeping certain things behind closed doors is imperative for a harmonious living place. Others say that a small discourse is critical to remain sane. Censorship is a way of protecting society from itself. Leaders and parental figures can make the choice to monitor what is read, watched, and consumed, but until the world lives the life worthy of a children's' book the effort is futile. While the narrative being taught may be inappropriate or harsher it doesn't decrease the value of it. Arguments are shown throughout everyday life over every topic. The question isn't, "When will society stop fighting the norm?" The question is, "When will society stop fighting change?" The world evolves with every second. With that evolution society blurs the line with what is acceptable and not. Sixty years ago the idea of two boys kissing was the equivalent of burning a baby in church on a Sunday morning. Today, two men kissing is celebrated with its' own parade. Social norms and ideals have been ripping down the cloak of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. A Brief Note On X Ray Vision Goggles Abstract MRI's today are the solution to X–Rays by having radio waves go back and forth transmitting signals that allow Doctors to see inside the human body. There are not many downsides of MRI's, however MRI's do not fit in the average waiting room by being circular tube like machines that take about 1 hour to produce a clear image of a patient's problem. MRI's are great when it comes to mental disabilities but when it comes to broken bones, it is too time consuming to wait in the machine for an hour to find out about a torn ligament or broken bone in a patient's body. A new vision will take away the harmless effects of an MRI but also have it for every day needs in a doctor's office. X–Ray Vision goggles would allow a doctor to see a patient's broken bone or ligaments without effects of X–rays. Present Technology Wilhelm Rontgen, a German physicist, had multiple experiments in 1895 he and found a type of radiation which he labelled as the letter X, because he did not know what it was. His X–rays were soon discovered by Doctors which primarily used them to look inside the human body. One original component that has not changed since has been how they are developed and made. X–Ray's are used to generate pictures that show the inside of the human body such as finding broken bones. In Otto Zhou of the University of North Carolina, Dr Zhou and his colleagues are bringing X–radiography into the world of modern electronics. In doing so, there is a hope to create X–ray ... CAT are mainly used for head and brain injuries and appropriate shielded should be provided to cover the areas not being x–rayed. Ray was quoted saying, "When I started to sing like myself – as opposed to imitating Nat Cole, which I had done for a while – when I started singing like Ray Charles, it had this spiritual and churchy, this religious or gospel sound. It had this holiness and preachy tone to it. It was very controversial. Now, all of these things can also describe another society, America. The fictional society in Fahrenheit 451 and America have many things in common, only proving further, that America remains on a downward spiral. First, modern American society relates to the society in Fahrenheit 451 through education. In Fahrenheit 451 schools have the kids sit in a classroom and learn from a TV. When Clarisse a seventeen year old girl who lives next to the protagonist, asks questions about the school work, the other kids call her peculiar. While talking with Montag, the main character in the book, Montag asks about school, Clarisse tells him "I'm antisocial, they say. I don't mix." (26) she only wants to comprehend the topic better, and the other teens ridicule her. In both America and in Fahrenheit 451 the education system remains faulty and unsuccessful. Education in America prevails horrible, approximately 70 percent of eighth grade students read below the standard expected from them. Other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. How Can A Game Possibly Change Someone 's Life? Essay How can a game possibly change someone's life? People from the outside looking in often think sports are merely meaningless competitions with no end result other than a winner and a loser. Although I love to come out as the victor in every competition, I know there is more to sports than what the stat sheets say. They can be life changing if you transfer what you learn on the court or field into real life situations. Basketball has certainly taught me many things including working with others, persevering through difficult circumstances, and learning to overcome past mistakes. One particular game my sophomore year in the regional semifinal game against LaPoynor made me realize what the game was actually teaching me. There was so much excitement in the huge locker room. My team and I had been waiting for this day since the beginning of the season. We had worked so hard that winter and we knew we deserved to be here playing in the regional semifinal game. We poured our blood, sweat, and tears into every game, practice, and workout. We were just two games away from making it to the state tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The only thing standing in our way was the LaPoynor Lady Flyers. I had been competing against their point guard since we were in elementary. She was quick, smart, and skilled, but we were ready to shut her down. The music was blaring through the speakers in the locker room as I stared at the floor envisioning what I needed to do to defeat my opponent. Every ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Physics Of Physics Regarding Light Rays I have always been interested in the way light travels, not just in how, but also in all the other factors that affect the light rays, including the speed, the velocity, the distance, as well as others. In my past years of school, I had been able to explore areas of physics concerning light rays, as part of my physics course. However, I had previously only learned the basic principles, such as the laws of refraction and reflection. Because I chose to focus on Chemistry and Biology, I was not given the opportunity to delve deeper into the subject, and had only obtained basic understanding of it. Although I knew of the principles and what they represented, I did not become fully aware of the fact that the principles were based off of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, we want the light to bounce off a mirror or to pass through a piece of glass on its way from A to B. Fermat 's principle states that of all the possible paths the light might take, that satisfy those boundary conditions, light takes the path which requires the shortest time. (A more accurate statement of Fermat's principle: Any hypothetical small change in the actual path of a light ray would only result in a second order change in the optical path length. The first order change in the optical path length would be zero.) Consider the diagram on the right. We want light to leave point A, bounce off the mirror, and get to point B. Let the perpendicular distance from the mirror of both A and B be d and the shortest distance between the points be D. Assume that light takes the path shown. The length of this path is then: Since the speed of light is the same everywhere along all possible paths, the shortest path requires the shortest time. To find the shortest path, I differentiated L with respect to x and set the result equal to zero. (I did this in order to yield an extremum/minimum in the function or the derivative of L(x).) And thus obtained the value of the least amount of time. After canceling equal terms on both sides I was left with: or The path that takes the shortest time is the one for which x=D/2, or equivalently, the one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Symptoms And Treatment Of Infection Control Infection Control Since the manual handling task requires close contact with the patient, all handlers should follow strict infection control protocols in ICU. A recent study showed that by strictly following infection control protocols the incidence of hospital–acquired infections could be reduced (8). In addition, an observational study concluded that better hospital–wide infection control would reduce the number of MRSA–positive patients admitted to ICU and acquisition of MRSA within ICU (9). Therefore, it is important to minimize the spread of the infection by performing the following aseptic techniques. Hand washing is the most important methods of preventing the spread of infection (7). Radiographers should wash their hands before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, there is no universal approach and best practices must be adapted to fit the epidemiology of specific ICUs and should also consider the available resources (10). Radiation safety Radiation safety of patients, radiographers and other individuals in ICU should be considered according to the "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) principle. General radiation safety principles include time, distance and shielding (7). Since the patient is male, no pregnancy check is needed. To protect the patient, the length of time that a patient remains in the path of the x–ray beam should be minimized. Therefore, it is important for radiographers to avoid unnecessary repeats and thus unnecessary exposure. Gonad shielding should be used on patients if possible, which is particularly important for young patients. In addition, proper collimations and adjusted exposure factors should be applied according to patient situations to minimize radiation dose (7). Radiographers should protect themselves as well. The time spent in radiation fields should be limited by taking shifts. Radiographers should stand as far away from source as possible to increase distance between radiation source and themselves. They should stand behind appropriate radiation shields or, more commonly, wear appropriate protection (7). According to a previous study, lead apron is the most common method of radiation protection as it may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Chef Menteur Landfill Introduction The recovery effort following Hurricane Katrina presented various challenges for many communities throughout New Orleans trying to rebuild their lives. The Village of Versailles is one such community, however, the Vietnamese–American community that populates the village has a history of being ignored and marginalized from decisions impacting their home, particularly with regards to the opening of the Chef Menteur landfill. This paper takes a look at the historical context of the Chef Menteur landfill to better understand the major stakeholders including the Vietnamese– American community, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Louisiana Environmental Action Network. It also sets forth perform a stakeholder analysis to coordinate each stakeholder to develop a monitoring and reporting plan for the Chef Menteur landfill. Using Colin Eden and Fran Ackerman's stakeholder analysis to inform stakeholder coordination, and Archon Fung's concept of minipublics, the Department of Sanitation will work with stakeholders to ensure that the concerns of the community and the environment are addressed in the monitoring and reporting plan. Background on Chef Menteur Landfill On February 9, 2006, then Mayor Ray Nagin signed an executive order suspending the Orleans Parish zoning ordinance, making it easier to zone 16600 Chef Mentuer Highway as a landfill site. Fahrenheit 451: The Future is Now Essay Truffaut's treatment of the Nazi regime in comparison to the firemen in his film shows the type of government he desired to depict, one that "succinctly and successfully institutionalized mass schizophrenia," a government founded on the "murderous ideologies" of "Communism and Nazism" (Gonzalez 1), a totalitarian society mirroring the world in Bradbury's novel among other dystopian novels of the time. His society fits the idea of totalitarianism in the fact that it is a "form of government that theoretically permits no individual freedom and that seeks to subordinate all aspects of the individual's life to the authority of the government" (Britannica). Over the course of the film, symbols and instances of censorship have made themselves more than clear. Many of the books shown burning–such as "Madame Bovary and Lolita"–were, in their own histories, victims of censorship. The entire idea of book burning, in fact, is a form of censorship utilized by cultures throughout the course of history, notably the book burnings that took place in communist Russia, China, and Nazi Germany (Bradbury)–the numerous documented book burnings at the hands of the Nazis were the "most emotive and probably the readiest point of censorship debates in this period" (Harrison 55). Because in the world of Fahrenheit 451 "every written word is considered inherently censorable, and inherently subversive . . . every book represents a challenge to authority" (Harrison 56). In the early 1940's his stories appeared regularly in Weird Tales. "I sold a story every month there for three or four years when I was (in my early twenties). Made the magnificent sum of twenty dollars for each story." Bradbury sold his first stories in 1945 to "slick" magazines – Collier's, Charm, and Mademoiselle. Shortly after his marriage to Marguerite Susan McClure in 1947, Bradbury's first book, Dark Carnival, was published by Arkham House. About this time, the idea for an important book about Mars, a collection of loosely connected stories, came to Bradbury. The subjects that engage Bradbury's pen are many: magic, horror, and monsters; rockets, robots, time and space travel; growing up in the Midwest town in the 1920's, and growing old in an abandoned Earth colony on another planet. Despite their themes, his stories contain a sense of wonder, often a sense of joy, and a lyrical and rhythimic touch that sets his work apart. A Comparative Analysis Of Bradbury 's Style Adam Choquette Period 7 Honors English II Mr. Coulter October 28, 2015 A Comparative Analysis of Bradbury's Style As Seen in Something Wicked This Way Comes and Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury was an American author who many argue revolutionized the concept of science fiction writing. Many SF writers commend technology, yet Bradbury is quick to vocalize the danger of it. He is not afraid of conforming to the regular standards of science fiction and is not afraid to voice his thoughts about technology. The story of Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel where futuristic 'firemen' burn books. The title mentions the number 451 which is the degree at which books burn. Bradbury portrays immense government control while technology is ruining the lives of individuals. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a novel about two boys, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade who encounter a carnival led by the cryptic Mr. Dark, who has the mysterious power to grant people their innermost desire. Bradbury does not credit his style to one individual or group. He once said, "In writing, you operate on yourself and save yourself." He incorporates a vast amount of figurative language and stylistic devices into his works including dichotomy, which differentiates him from other authors. In both Something Wicked This Way Comes and Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury employs a variety of different dichotomies, most notably the comparison of light versus dark. Are the applications and opportunities that a CT scan offers worth the negatives and risks that come along with it? Introduction: A CT scan, also known as computed tomography, utilises the computed compiling of many X–rays taken from all different directions around an object in order to form tomographic images of precise areas of the object, allowing one to see inside the object without incision. Because of the involvement with gamma rays in the process of a CT scan, there is an, albeit small, increase in the risk of developing cancer every time a scan is performed. This small payoff is almost always worth it, as CT scans play a huge part in not only modern medical imaging, but has more recently been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Discussion: A gamma ray is a form of electromagnetic radiation that consists of high–energy protons due to its extremely high frequency wavelengths. Gamma rays ionizing radiation, meaning that they are hazardous because they carry enough energy to free electrons from atoms and molecules, this, in turn, gives them higher penetrating power than any other form of radiation. Another type of electromagnetic radiation is X–radiation, which shares the name of its components, X–rays, with the well–known medical imaging method. While these two are scientifically classified as separate forms of radiation, they are extremely similar to the point where there is only two known ways to determine if the radiation being emitted is one or the other, and both of these methods have cases where there are exceptions. The first method is to compare where the radiation is originating from, with regular gamma rays coming from the nucleus of an atom and X–rays being emitted by electrons. This method has two primary issues, being that 1– the precise point of origin cannot always be pinpointed and 2– that there are actually a number of much less common processes that can produce the same high–energy photons. The second method is to determine the variant of rays by the wavelength of the radiation, with any wavelength shorter than some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
