Latest live news updates: Counting of votes for 5,728 Gram Panchayats
in Karnataka that went to the polls in two phases, is underway. As ballot papers were
used in polls other than in Bidar district where EVMs were used, the announcement of
results may get delayed, according to poll officials.
Elections were announced for a total of 91,339 seats in 5,728 Gram Panchayats of 226
talukas in the state, out of which candidates have been elected unopposed for 8,074
seats. Elections were held for 43,238 seats in the first phase on December 22, while
voting took place for 39,378 seats in the second phase on December 27. A total of
2,22,814 candidates were in the fray.
In another news, President Ram Nath Kovind will virtually confer the Digital India Awards
2020 today via video conferencing. Digital India Awards honour exemplary initiatives and
practices in digital governance.
Uttar Pradesh's minister for civil aviation Nand Gopal Gupta will visit the site of the
upcoming Noida International Airport and review its work today.

2. Isro to launch first satellite developed entirely by Brazil's space agency
The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is set to launch Amazonia-1, the first
satellite to have been developed completely in Brazil by the National Institute for Space
Research (INPE), the Latin American nation's apex space research body.
Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates airline, has executed a cargo charter
to transport Amazonia-1 from Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil to Chennai. This is the first
time that Emirates SkyCargo has transported a space satellite from South America.
The earth Observation has been designed, assembled and tested in Brazil and took
eight years to be developed. Once launched into space, it will help monitor the
ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest tropical rainforest. The satellite
is due to be sent to space in February 2021 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on

BJP-backed candidates leading in panchayat polls in Karnataka
Initial trends indicate that the candidates backed by the BJP have won a majority of
panchayat seats in Karnataka as the counting of votes progressed on Wednesday.
Though these polls don't take place on party symbols, all political parties have put in
efforts to ensure that the candidate supported by them wins, so as to have their hold on
grassroot level politics, which may prove advantageous for them in taluk or zilla
panchayat and even assembly polls whenever it happens.
According to sources, the BJP has so far secured 4,228 seats, followed by the Congress
with 2,265 seats, JD(S) 1,167 seats and independents 678 seats.

the Taluk headquarters by adhering to strict COVID-19 protocol of mandatory wearing of

Counting underway for Karnataka gram panchayat polls
Counting for the Karnataka local body elections is underway in different parts of the
state, including Shivamogga and Davanagere. This is the second phase of gram
panchayat elections in the state. Voting for the same had taken place on Sunday.
Preparations were undertaken throughout the state for two-phase polls.
"Polling to 5,762 out of the total 6,004 gram panchayats will be held in two phases on
December 22 and December 27. Meanwhile, counting will be held on December 30,"
Karnataka State Election Commission said.
The three main parties that contested the polls are Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress
and the Janata Dal-Secular.

An earthquake of 4.3 magnitude hit Kutch district of Gujarat on Wednesday morning,
officials said.
No casualty was reported due to it, they said.
