2. Why North Korea has banned citizens from
drinking, laughing, grocery shopping for 11
days?
The North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has ordered aban on
the citizens of the country to mark the 10th death anniversary
of the former leader Kim Jong iI’s. He died of a heart attack on
December 17, 2011, at the age of 69.
As per the orders, people are not supposed to show any signs
of happiness while North Korea commemorates his death.
This year, the mourning period will go on for 11 days as this is
the 10th death anniversary. Generally, North Korea observes a
10-day mourning period every year.
The crackdown in the country started at the beginning of
December 2021 as the North Korean Police have been
preparing for the mourning period.

3. Foundational Literacy Index: West Bengal on
top in large states category
The Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister recently released a
report on the ‘Index on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy’.
The report on the literacy rate in India is an indicator of literacy among
children below the age of 10 years in Indian states that are further
divided into different categories.
On one hand, in the 'large states category', West Bengal has topped
the charts while Bihar is on the bottom, Kerala can be seen on a top
spot in the ‘small states category’.
Under Foundational Literacy Index, regions have been divided into four
categories- large states, small states, Northeast and Union Territories’.
The report on the ‘Index on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy’ has
been prepared by the ‘Institute for Competitiveness’ and was released
by the ECA to PM.

4. Government grants ‘In-Principle’ approval to
set up largest nuclear power generating site
in Maharashtra
The Government of India has granted ‘In-Principle’ approval to
set up six Nuclear Power Reactors of 1,650 MW each in technical
cooperation with France.
The approval to the nuclear power reactors has been accorded
to a site in Maharashtra’s Jaitapur which will make it the largest
nuclear power generating site in India with a total capacity of
9,900 MW.
Currently, the techno-commercial discussions are to arrive at the
project proposal with M/s. EDF, France is in progress.
The Government of India has been determined to provide all the
impetus to promote the use of Nuclear Energy in India in sectors
such as Health Services as well as the agricultural programs for
indigenous developments and import substitutes.

5. PM Modi honoured with Bhutan's highest
civilian award - Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo
Bhutan conferred Prime Minister Modi with
the country's Highest Civilian Award- Ngadag Pel gi
Khorlo on December 17, 2021.
The Head of the State of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar
Namgyel Wangchuk pronounced Prime Minister Modi’s
name for the highly prestigious civilian decoration of
Bhutan and also highlighted the unconditional
friendship between India and Bhutan.
The neighbouring country also acknowledged the
support that India provided to Bhutan during the
COVID-19 pandemic under PM Modi’s leadership.
