Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Farmers observe Shaheed Kisan
Diwas today, antim ardaas at Tikunia
• Shaheed Kisan Diwas is being observed by the farmers today to pay
tribute to farmers who lost their lives in Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
• At least eight people were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri when vehicles
knocked over protesting farmers, including four farmers and a
journalist. The other three people who were killed include two BJP
workers and a driver of the Union Minister of State for Home Ajay
Kumar Mishra.
• According to the farmers, the vehicles were driven by BJP workers who
were traveling to welcome the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh,
Keshav Prasad Maurya, who was scheduled to visit the area for an
event.
• The farmers also claim that Ajay Kumar Mishra's son Ashish Mishra had
been driving one of the cars when the vehicle ran over the four
protesting farmers, killing them.
• The UP police have got 3-day custody of Ashish Mishra, for his alleged
role in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

OFB Corporatisation: Government to launch 7 new
defence firms carved out of OFB on October 15
• The Ministry of Defence informed on October 11, 2021, that as part of the
corporatisation of the Ordnance, the Government of India will formally
launch seven new defence firms on October 15.
• The move of launching 7 new defence companies out of the ordnance
Factory Board came after the government issued an order of dissolving
the OFB with effect from October 1, 2021.
• These new government entities will be producing ammunition, vehicles,
explosives, weapons and equipment, among others.
• The Defence Ministry also informed that these 7 new companies will have 66
firm contracts that are worth Rs. 65,000 crores from the three services
and the paramilitary forces.
• The Union Cabinet earlier had approved the corporatization of the
Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in order to boost its efficiency and
effectiveness.
• OFB was the oldest and the largest industrial set-up that used to function
under the Department of Defence Production of the Defence Ministry.

What is Satellite Internet and how will it
transform the world that we live in
• Satellite internet is wireless internet that is beamed down
from satellites orbiting the Earth. It works in a similar way
as satellite TVs. The user will need to get a satellite dish
installed in his/ her house.
• The satellite internet service will help connect people
living in the remotest of areas across the world where
regular internet cannot reach.
• The satellite internet is also expected to be faster than
the regular internet. The average internet speed currently
is between 10-40 Mbps and satellite internet will take it
up to as high as 300Mbps, as promised by Musk's Starlink
network.

Rajasthan decides to recall controversial Marriage
Registration Bill amid concern over child marriage
• The Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot said on October 11, 2021,
that the state government has decided to recall the recently passed
marriage registration bill to re-examine it. The step has been taken
amid the concerns that it will encourage child marriages in the state.
• Chief Minister Gehlot said that the Rajasthan Government will urge the
governor to return the bill for legal consultations.
• The party in opposition in Rajasthan, BJP, and various activists had
objected to a provision in the ‘Rajasthan Compulsory Marriage
Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021’ that allowed the registration of
marriage even if the bride and groom had not attained the legal age to
tie the knot.
• While addressing a programme on International Girl Child Day, Gehlot
said, “There has been a controversy in the country that this law will
encourage child marriage. We decided that it was not a question of our
prestige. We will request the governor to return the bill we have passed.”
• He further added that only after the legal consultations from the lawyers,
it will be considered whether to take the bill forward or not.

COVID-19: WHO experts recommend extra COVID jab for
people with weak immune systems
• The vaccine advisers of the World Health Organisation
(WHO) on October 11, 2021, recommended that all
individuals with weakened immune systems should
be offered an additional dose of all WHO-approved
Coronavirus vaccines.
• The global health agency’s experts also said that
over-60s fully immunized with China’s Sinovac and
Sinopharm vaccines must be offered an additional
third dose of COVID-19 Vaccine.
• The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on
Immunisation (SAGE) held a four-day meeting last
week to review the latest information and data on a
range of vaccines for COVID-19 as well as other
diseases.

Telugu filmmaker B Gopal to be awarded Satyajit Ray Award
• Renowned Telugu filmmaker B Gopal has been
chosen for the 4th Satyajit Ray Award for his
contribution to Indian cinema.
• He will be presented with the award on October 13 in
Hyderabad. Gopal has been selected by a panel
comprising Malayalam filmmaker Balu Kiriyath, music
director Perumbavoor G Raveendranath and others.
Telugu filmmaker B Gopal has directed 2 Hindi movies
and 30 Telugu movies in his decade-long career.
• Eminent filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee
Adoor Gopalakrishnan, producer Mohan G, and actress
Madhabi Mukherjee have been awarded Satyajit Ray
Award earlier.

Alexander Schallenberg sworn-in as new
Chancellor of Austria after Kurz steps aside
• Austria got a new Chancellor on October 11, 2021, two
days after the former leader Sebastian Kurz resigned amid
the corruption allegations, however, the direction of the
government policy was not expected to change.
• The President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen swore
in Alexander Schallenberg as Chancellor. He was was the
former Foreign Minister of Austria.
• Alexander Schallenberg, after being sworn in as the
President said that he will do everything to refill the
trenches caused by the recent government crisis in the
country and also do everything in his power to serve Austria.
• The new Chancellor also assured that he will continue to
work closely with the conservative leader Sebastian Kurz.
They both share a hardline on immigration.

Covaxin recommended for emergency use in
children aged 2-18 years
• The Subject Expert Committee on COVID-19 has
recommended emergency use of Bharat
Biotech's Covaxin for children aged between 2-
18 year-olds.
• Bharat Biotech, the Hyderabad-based company,
had submitted data from Covaxin's clinical
trials on children aged between 2 to 18 years
to the DCGI on October 6, 2021.
• The data was thoroughly reviewed by the
Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation
(CDSCO) and Subject Experts Committee (SEC)
after which they gave positive
recommendations.

• Amit Khare, the Former Secretary (HRD), Information
& Broadcasting (I&B), on October 12, 2021, has been
appointed as the advisor of Prime Minister Modi.
Khare is an IAS officer of the 1985 batch.
• As per the official order, the Appointments Committee
of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Amit
Khare, IAS (Retd), as Advisor to the Prime Minister in
Prime Minister’s Office, in the rank and scale of
Secretary to Government of India, on contract basis, as
per other usual terms and conditions as are applicable
in the case of re-employed officers of Secretary level in
Government of India, initially for a period of two years
until further orders, whichever is earlier.
• Amit Khare will join the Prime Minister’s Office after
ex-Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha and ex-Secretary
Amarjeet Sinha left the PMO as advisers in 2021.

Pluto’s atmosphere is disappearing
• Pluto's atmosphere is undergoing a significant
alteration and disappearing, as per a recent study by
researchers. The icy dwarf planet's atmosphere is mainly
made up of nitrogen.
• The dwarf planet lies about 4.8 billion kilometers away
from the Earth in the Kuiper Belt.
• It had lost its planet status years ago. It reportedly
caught the attention of scientists when it passed in
front of a star back in 2018.
• Astronomers discovered that Pluto's atmosphere is
undergoing a strange transformation.

India invited to become full-time member of IEA:
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri
• India has been invited to become a full-time member of
the International Energy Agency (IEA) by its Executive
Director Fatih Birol, informed Union Housing and
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
• The Minister said that as a natural corollary to the India
IEA strategic partnership, Dr Birol invited India to deepen
its cooperation with IEA by becoming a full Member.
• The Union Minister had a productive online conversation
with Dr Fatih Birol, during which the IEA Executive
Director praised India’s major achievements under PM
Narendra Modi's leadership to improve energy access for
its citizens like PM Ujjwala Yojana and UJALA schemes.

AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria awarded 22nd Lal
Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence
• AIIMS Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria was honoured with
the 22nd Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence for
his pioneer and sustained contribution in the field of medicine and
pandemic awareness.
• Dr. Guleria was conferred the prestigious award by Vice President M
Venkaiah Naidu who called him "commander-in-chief" of India’s
dedicated army of frontline warriors who have been selflessly
waging a tireless battle against COVID-19.
• The Vice President added saying, "Dr Randeep Guleria’s stellar
role in creating awareness about the Pandemic in recent times
has not only been reassuring for all of us but has also soothed
the frayed nerves of every person who has met, seen or heard
him speak on multiple forums on various aspects related to
COVID 19."
• The Vice President also praised doctors across the country and
other frontline warriors, including nurses, technicians, security
personnel, farmers and sanitation workers for their selfless service
during the pandemic.

Government accords ‘Maharatna’ status to Power Finance
Corporation; List of Maharatna companies in India
• The Government of India has accorded ‘Maharatna’ Status to
state-owned Power Finance Corporation (PFC). As per the
statement by the company, the move will pave the way for the
company’s greater financial and operational efficiency.
• PFC in an official statement said, “Government of India accorded
the prestigious ‘Maharatna’ status to state-owned Power Finance
Corporation, thus giving PFC greater operational and financial
autonomy.”
• An order to this effect was issued on October 12, 2021, by the
Department of Public Enterprises, under the Ministry of Finance.
• RK Singh, the Union Power, and New & Renewable Energy Minister
congratulated PFC and said that the conferment of ‘Maharatna’
status is the reflection of the central government’s confidence in
PFC’s strategic role in the overall development of the power sector
and the endorsement of its sterling performance.
