George Barnstable is deciding on a font style for the masthead of his new hip hop magazine. He considers three options: American Captain, Krinkes, and Helvetica. For his final choice, he selects American Captain. He feels this bold yet simple font will draw attention and is fitting for the daring views in hip hop music. The masthead will be in black surrounded by orange with a white background. This color scheme works well together. By placing the masthead prominently, he hopes to attract consumers' attention. Using a similar font to magazines he admires, like XXL, will help consumers recognize the magazine's hip hop focus. He also plans to name the magazine "Pablo" after Kanye West
1. Masthead Font Styles
• Candidate name: George Barnstable
• Candidate number: 3010
• Center number: 64135
2. Masthead Font Styles
Font Name: American Captain
The denotation of font style I would use for the masthead for my magazine is
American Captain. This font is simplistic and bold, which allows it to stand out and
draw consumers eyes towards it. The boldness of the masthead is able to link with the
genre of music included in the magazine: hip hop/rap, due to the genre being fearless
in the lyrics written and spoken.
The masthead is likely be in the large, black and bold ‘American Captain’ font as seen
above, surrounded by a block of vibrant orange. This black and orange combination is
able to follow my magazines colour scheme which allows for consistency and a
representation of professionalism.
This font is similar to my magazines of inspiration: XXL. This is a beneficial thing as this
is the trend for most hip hop magazines to use such a bold font, enclosed by a bright
block of colour.
3. Masthead Font Styles
Font Name: Krinkes
The denotation of the name of the font I would use as the masthead for my magazine
is Krinkes. This simplistic yet unique font connotes professionalism and an ‘old school’
feel. Moreover, the lowercase writing highlights the idea of professionalism and
seriousness. This can be viewed as positive as it can connote that the magazine only
includes the most relevant topics and doesn't’t include any misleading information.
However, this font can be seen as boring due to its simplistic and old fashioned look.
Furthermore, the masthead is able to suggest that the magazine is exclusive due to its
unique appearance; the stereotypical hip hop magazine’s masthead is bold and
simple, highlighting that if I did use the font ‘Krinkes’, consumers can assume that my
magazine is different to all the other hip hop magazines, believing that it holds content
other magazines of the genre don't, and therefore are more likely to purchase it.
Ideally, the font will be on its own, surrounded by the magazines background colours.
However, I don’t believe that this will be my final font style due it looking simply
boring and having the knowledge that hip hop is a very energetic genre, it will simply
not suit the genre of music seen in the magazine.
4. Masthead Font Styles
Font Name: Helvetica
The denotation of the name of the font style I would use for my magazine masthead is
Helvetica. This font style is simple and bold like many of the magazine masthead's in
the hip hop genre. Its presence is not complicated at all, which implies that the
magazine is very straight forward and only includes relevant information. However,
this can also connote that the magazine is plain, simple and just like all the other
magazines which comment on the hip hop genre.
Ideally, the font would be dressed in orange, surrounded by a jet black box, similar to
the XXL as seen above, simply just with different colours. In conclusion, this font is
similar due to the other fonts in the genre meaning that it can be easily recognised as
a hip hop magazine. It is plain and simple which can either be viewed as good or bad,
and for that reason I do not plan to use the ‘Helvetica’ font.
PABLO
5. Masthead Font Styles – FINAL
Font Name: Bombing
The denotation of the name of the font style is bombing. This is a font style that I
would possible use as my magazines masthead due its hip hop look. The verbal code is
able to connote relaxation and chill; many hip hop songs make people calm when they
are listening to them.
Also, many of the letters look sketched and therefore are able to be perceived as
genuine, which is important as it suggests the authenticity of my magazine as my
magazine will only include the ‘realest’ content. Additionally, the use of the sketched-
look font suggests that the magazine is original and unique; a lot of magazines use the
same bold font. This font can additionally connote happiness and is likely to appeal to
the younger generation due to its use of a quirky font.
Personally, I believe that this font style would look good in orange, surrounded by
either a black or white background.
6. Masthead Font Style
Font Name: American Captain
The reason I decided to choose this font style over the choices was because it is very bold yet
simple. This implies that the masthead is able to draw a consumers attention as it is large and
capturing. I believe the verbal code is fitting to the genre of hip hop due to it being bold, just like
the daring views and opinions heard in many hip hop songs.
The masthead will be in the jet black colour shown above, surrounded by a block of orange and
have a white background. This colour scheme is good due to each colour working significantly
well with each other.
The verbal code will sit in the top left of the front cover of my magazine, in a large corner, to
attract the attention of the consumer by using the vibrant orange colour.
Finally, the use of this font being closely related to the fonts of one of magazines of inspiration
(XXL) means that I am following the trends for hip hop magazines in terms of font. This results in
consumers understanding the magazine is hip hop related simply from eyeballing the font.
Finally, I plan to use the verbal code ‘PABLO’ as my magazine’s masthead due to iconic rapper,
Kanye West, labelling his most recent album “The Life of Pablo, in which ‘Pablo’ is expressed as a
supreme being. Therefore this God-like name is able to connote that my magazine’s content will
be superior to any other magazine’s in the hip hop genre. Additionally, Kanye appears on one of
my magazines of inspiration’s front cover, highlighting that I am following the trends of a typical
hip hop magazine.
