Date of Publication:
I have decided to release
date of my magazine to
be December 16th, 2016.
This allows me to have a
couple months of time to
prepare and schedule the
forthcoming weeks.
Managing the schedule:
I must manage and keep
track on my schedule
properly in order to have
a successful production
for my magazine
Additional Work: In this
time I also plan to further
research into my
magazines of inspiration
- Q and XXL in an attempt
to get a brief knowledge
of how to produce my
own magazine.
Editorial and
Budgetary
Decision:
The editorial
decision involves
the decision of
topics that will be
covered in the
issues of the
magazine. This
includes the
contents and other
conventions that
effectively make up
the magazine.
The budgetary
decision refers to
the money available
and how it will be
spent towards the
magazines
production.
Content Acquisition:
Arguably, the content
acquisition process is
the most important
step as without the
magazines content
then the magazine
itself is severely
flawed.
One way in which
content can be
gathered for a
magazine is through
in-house staff writer,
and the other is
through external
writers that are
commissioned to write
on topics that are
controversial. It is also
at this stage that the
artwork, defined as
illustrations and
pictures that are going
Sub-Editing:
Sub-editing
focuses on
quality
control, as my
magazine is
brand new
and therefore
referred to as
‘not big
enough’, then
the editor is
required to
complete the
sub-editing for
themselves.
Sub-editing
involves:
-Checking the
accuracy and
reliability of
the facts
mentioned in
all the articles.
Page Layout:
Even tough it is
usually larger
publications who use
a specialist team
whom are
responsible for the
page layouts (layout
staff), I plan to ensure
that typeset and the
layout of various
pages which come
together to make the
magazine are of high
quality. To perform
this task, powerful
Desktop Publishing
(DTP) programs such
as InDesign or
PageMaker are used.
It is also at that stage
that adverts from
advertiser’s are
placed into the
File Emailed to
Printer:
After the magazine
has been
proofread until all
members of the
editorial
department are
satisfied, the DTP
file of the entire
finished magazine
is sent to the
printer where it is
printed.
Pre-press is
introduced at this
time. This is
defined as the
process of
checking to make
sure that the
images and fonts
necessary for the
magazine are sent.
Distribution:
During this final
stage, the
printing
company will
package and
send the
printed
magazines to
the magazines
companies
warehouse.
From the
warehouse, the
magazines are
then distributed
and sold to the
public.

to be placed in the
magazine, and
graphics, relating to
the pictures and
images that are
designed with a
computer programme
are worked on.
Additionally, at this
stage journalists or
reporters into the
topics and events
being covered in the
magazine conduct a lot
of research. This
research can be
completed via internet
use; news databases or
meetings are arranged
with interviewees to
gather additionally
information.
-Making sure
all words are
correctly
spelled.
-Ensuring that
grammar and
punctuation is
correctly used.
-Assuring that
all articles
follow the
consistent
house-style.
-Continuously
working on
the page
layout.
content of the
magazine.
Proof Reading:
The editorial
department will print
out a hard copy of the
magazine to spot any
mistakes and correct
them immediately.
This is because it is
easier to spot
mistakes in a hard
copy compared to a
softcopy. Once all
mistakes are spotted
and corrected on the
DTP file, the editorial
teams continues to
read the magazine
until every member is
satisfied that all
errors have been
corrected.
It is important to
acknowledge that
a magazine
company will use
the process of
‘printer’s proofs’.
This is when a
magazine
company will print
out a few prints of
the magazine to
have them checked
by the editor
before the
magazine is
requested to have
hundreds of
thousands copies
printed. If the
editor and his
team are satisfied
with the ‘printers
proofs’, the go
ahead is given for
mass printing to
commence.
