Targeting 16-26 with Music Magazine
1. Evaluation Question 4&5
Who would be the audience for
your media product?
&
How did you attract/address
your audience?
By Ed Elliott
2. • My target audience for my magazine is both males and
females aged between 16 and mid 20’s (24-26). I addressed
them through my focus group page on Facebook and asked
them for their opinions on various parts of my production
including; masthead, barcode, fonts, colours, image size etc.
They responded via the comments section to allow me to see
their views and edit my production.
3. • I wanted to aim the magazine at both male and females, as I
didn’t want to limit my audience to one gender. I did this by
using neutral colour schemes so it appealed to both. I also
didn't want to fall into the stereotypical trap of selling to one or
the other by narrowing down the content.
4. • I addressed the class of my magazine to be all rounded; I made it
of a much lower price (£1.50) compared to current magazines on
the market as I wanted it to be affordable to all people. But the
content is much richer than the price and will make people want to
read the whole thing and get them talking about it.
5. • The nature of my audience is typical mainstream and doesn't aim at a
niche audience. The content contains up to date music genres, modern
images, readable content for all people in my target group including
current artists, latest news, upcoming artists and more.
• To attract my audience, as well as using the focus group for input and
feedback, I included common conventions I found within my research,
of magazines with the same age range. The codes included bold texts,
imagery and no crowding within the layout.
6. • Concerning mise en scene, I dressed them in clothing similar to the
VIEWS of my target audience, that of inspiration and admiration with a
sense of confidence and reflection. It's not a fashion magazine and my
clothing choice is there to link in with the main feature article.
• The images I made are eye catching and bold, to attract them, and
features of opposing Mulvey’s Male Gaze for example the front cover
addressing women with an influence of desire. Another example would
be my images on my contents page of young, successful artists with
popular fashion sense and similar backgrounds.
• The direct mode of address in the pose gives a personal relationship
(uses and grat) which can be a large importance to fans, this would allow
me to give a preferred or dominant reading.
