Question 2
How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
By Ed Elliott
 My front cover is a close up eye line shot. This created a direct mode of address to
the audience, this furthermore means the target audience of youths/teenagers
can relate and create a relationship (uses and grat) with the admirable artists.
 Most of my shots were medium close ups, this enabled the reader to establish
the importance of the main feature artists involved. The only shots that took up
the whole page were the front cover and double page spread, this is because it’s
the feature and the main point of the article.
 Stereotypically when doing my research, females were used on the front cover
quite frequently, but this was challenged in as a countertype when I chose a male
instead. The effect of this meant that it would stand out, and mean more interest
from boys who relate and girls who admire, rather than the other way round.
 The shot position on my double page spread is a typical convention of a
music magazine as it means the reader has to open the whole page to
see the article and image. This then will make the article appeal to the
audience and make them want to read it.
 The male on the front cover of my magazine is wearing a formal shirt and
trousers – this carries on with all feature images of the main artist. This
appeals to youths who want to grow up and be successful with a upper
class lifestyle. This is a countertype of many magazines who have more
casually dressed models but I wanted to make the audience have a
different view and appeal to them from and alternate angle. The clothing
isn’t related to to their age but is related to their future and make them
want to aspire to it.
 The models used in my production are of the same age range
as my audience. This means they can relate to them and feel
more obliged to form a relationship with the articles. So by
doing this, it creates a personal feel to the magazine and
makes them want to read it.
 The double page spread model has a specific Miz En Scene with a smartly
dressed style of shirt and trousers. It creates the sense of admiration, and
example. The shadows from the lighting create the chilled style with a
calm surrounding. Furthermore, the stance shows that of reflection and
confidence, which is the message trying to be put across to the youthful
audience that they need to be confident and have a positive reflection on
their life.
 As a final representation, my product did the following. The prioritized
reception theory was the ability to relate between the audience and their
age to the artist featured. This ability plus aspiration would create a
personal relationship that entices the reader and could make a loyal fan
base. The teenage artists are representing other youths, which makes
the audience want to reach their potential. This was done by the shot
positioning and miz en scene.
