Survey Results Analysis
Question 1
The first question in our survey was to ask the audience about their
gender. Due to this question me and my group were able to specify what
gender is more likely to listen to the Dance genre and it subgenres. As you
are able to see from the online results there is more female audiences
than male. In addition, with in our paper questionnaire we got similar
results. It showed us that there was more female respondent than female.
However, the difference with numbers wasn’t significantly dominant y
female respondents. This means that we want our music video to be
appealing to both genders. Furthermore, by doing this it will enable us to
gather a wider range of audiences, making our video ore appealing and
engaging. Due to this, it would make our music video quite mainstream
due to the fact that today’s music videos attract the audience through the
portrayed of ideas and messages which are not narrowed down to one
specific gender. This is something we would like to develop further by our
research on the mise-en-scene we allocate in the music video.
Question 2
The second question that I choose, is targeted at the respondents age
as this will enable me and y group to full their audience profile. After I
have gathered all the information we have concluded that the
audience which we have asked ranges between ages 17-18. However,
it can also link to audiences of ages such as 25+. We believe that we
have gained such a young audience due to Dance music being mainly
appealing to the cub scene audience which is mainly associated with
younger individuals. However, we have obtained wider range of
audience of 20 to 30 years old also enabled us to wider our range of
audience . This will be effective as although teenagers are associated
with Dance sub-culture, the older people of 20+ also show similar
interest. We aim at this specific range of audiences, which all allow our
video to be open to a vast audiences.
Question 3
This third question results was very important for our group s it
depicted which genre/sub-culture we are going to follow within our
music video. As you can see from the results most of our audiences
have specified the Dance genre as most appealing. We have decided
to go with this gene because not only was it voted most liked by our
audiences but because we already have an idea about a specific song
to use. By going with what our audiences liked most will enable us to
gain a wide range od viewers and make our music video successful as
more people and our target group will listen to it. As for our paper
questionnaire we found the same results. The mist dominated genre
was dance. This shows us that our audience gas a wide interest in
dance music. Overall, we have decided that Dance (Electronic) would
be most appealing for the audience as it is the most popular, meaning
that we would attract and satisfy a wide amount of audiences.
Question 4
This question focused on defining the message behind the video. The
choice included narrative, performance and concept. Initially as a
group we preferred the narrative theory due to its ability to convey an
imaginative story or message throughout the video. This would makes
our product more interesting and engaging. As for our survey fed back,
the audiences mostly voted for Narrative which is in our favour. The
majority of the online respondents has chosen the Narrative idea.
However, the paper based questionnaire Concept was mainly leading
answer. Overall, we decided to go with Narrative theory as we believe
it would be a better choice due to the fact tat it has gained more result
in composition to the paper based Concept. In addition, we realised
that todays mainstream music videos are mostly based around the
Narrative theory. For that reason, this would make our music video fit
more into today’s society. Besides, from that looking at Dance music
videos, we think the narrative would work the best in order to make
imaginative and unique product.
Question 5
The fifth question, involved finding out about how long the music
video should be. As we expected both paper and online
questionnaire showed that the audience is expecting average
timing of the music video of 3 to 4 minutes long. We found this
result fairly useful to determine the timing of our own product.
While we were looking back at the research we already carried
out this is the average timing for this kind of product, that will
enable us to develop our narrative story telling. Due to this we
will be making our music video around 3 to 4 minutes long. Also,
in bot online and paper questionnaire no one voted for 5 to 6
minutes long this mans we will not be making it that long as it
could bore our audiences. We will make the story short and sweet
to engage and attract our audiences.
Question 6
Another question we asked our audiences is what the use of
location within the music video. This question is important,
particularly within the narrative theory as it uses scenes to
produce a mood feeling and reaction in the viewers, as well
as sense of story telling. The results of the online
questionnaire and paper based showed similar results. The
combination of both – urban/ city location and rural/
countryside was seen as most appealing. The dominance of
this choice was essential for our group as this is something we
already discussed within our meeting minutes and wanted to
implement within our music video. We found that this
question was vital for our music video construction as the
connection between the Narrative theory and location should
be very strong due to the idea of ‘Story telling’. This
combination of locations enables our product to be more
imaginative and engaging to a vast audience.
Question 7
The seventh question within my survey results, we asked the
respondents about the amount of locations they would want to
see within the music video. This was vital as it dependent on our
choice of combined locations. The online survey showed us the
respondents would want to see 3 to 4 locations similarly to the
paper based questionnaire. When looking back at our pervious
questions we find this response as useful taking into account the
fact that we would want to produce a combination of both rural
and urban locations. Including 3 to 4 locations in our music video
will enable us to construct an effective product which would
avoid a sense of confusion within the audience about the place
the story is based on. This would be beneficial for our group as by
only having 3 to 4 locations we be very successful at our time
management which would have an effect on the quality and
detail we intend to include in the music video.
Question 8
Referring back to the Narrative theory question in our survey,
The amount of actors within the music video is fairly important.
This is because by the right choice and number of characters, a
correct message and idea can be conveyed to the audiences.
Looking at the results we can see that in the online based
survey the audience has favoured the 2 character option, which
is followed by 1 character option in terms of votes. However, in
the paper based survey people voted mostly for 1 character
followed by 2. due to these results we have decided to pick
either 1 character or 2 no more as the majority of our
audiences did not want more than two. As for our final
decision, we decided to have 2 characters , this is an optimal
choice as by this we can portray a clear story between two
individuals who’s relationship will be clear and understandable
for the audiences.
Question 9
At the very start of our media course we have been taught
about lip-syncing and carried out a practical exercise. As a
result, of this we have came to a conclusion that we should ask
this question to our audiences. As we can see from the image
above, the “Yes, occasionally” option has scored the most cotes
in our online survey. However, within our paper based survey
people voted “No, not at all”. Due to these results we now
have a choice of whether including lip-syncing or not. As a
group we have not decided yet as we choose to leave it until
the planning of the video and the story we will then decided
overall whether to add it or not. If we were to add lip-syncing
we will only add it once this is because we believe that it would
suit the Narrative theory. This will differentiate our product
from performance based music videos and will enable us to
allocate various shots/scenes to reinforce the story which we
intend o portray within our music video.
Question 10
The question within the survey, we asked the audiences
about situations they would want to see within the video. We
specifically aimed the question at real life situations as we
thought it would attract the audiences and suit the narrative
theory. The results showed the respondents ‘don't mind’
seeing real life situations or not. We believe that the use of
real life situations will be useful as it allow us to convey real
feelings and emotions, bringing a reaction within the
audiences. The music video could then become more realistic
allowing the audiences to relate to a given topic, memory or
emotion especially as we are thinking about portraying a
relationship between two characters.
