Lost Frequencies – Reality
Lost Frequencies is a stage name used by Felix Safran De Laet. He is a music producer and a DJ
from Belgium. Lost Frequencies has become very popular after the remix of the song “are you with
me”. In 2014 and 2015 the remix became to be the best as it has hit the top of the charts in many
different countries such as United Kingdom and Australia. The artist has realised a so his latest
track called “Reality” in 2015. The Genre of this song it mostly fits to Dance subgenres such as
Deep house. The audience of this genre are related to our chosen Progressive House genre which
means this analysis will help my group and this will be very beneficial for us as a group. This is
because it will enable us to spot and pick out any important elements to make our product more
efficient. The music video for “Reality” is a narrative based video showing a story as this is what my
group would like to create in our music video. As a result, analysing this video it will highlight any
good parts that we can use into our video.
Styles
Lost Frequencies' song “Reality” falls into the electronic dance genre which
predominantly is a narrative/ concept based music video. The story for the music
video “Reality” countertype this conventional picture through having a storyline
style all through the music video. A clear story is creating by the main character
looking and searching for a mysterious map and going for a chase which ends in
what seems his death. The music video is relaxing in terms of the shot speeds and
most of the scenes are captured in slow motion. Therefore, this made the visuals
to replicate the music rhythm making an amusing ,tremendous video. This links to
theory of Andrew Goodwin’s which is having “a relationship between the visuals
and music”. Furthermore, the music video focuses on the character and capturing
the surrounding at the same time. This makes the action that happen in the video
to be slow and making the audience be interested by the large amount of several
shots enabling them to understand the surrounding that the individual is in. when
the video is on slow paced it enables us as viewers to be more engaged and
experience the journey that the character is going through therefore this is a
positive feature of the video from my perspective. Overall, compare to other
electronic dance music videos their story is based on showing a hidden message
but this music video is clear and well laid out because of the narrative style that is
used.
Ideologies
This music video contains a hidden ideology due to it being narrative. This
ideology is hidden in multiple shots show signs. When I saw the music video I think
that the message shows a relationship between the male character and the female
character in the music video. The music video portrays true love relationship that
take a test to go on a treasure hunt. This music video represent that love is what
we mostly need not matter where we are. This music video also allows us to see
when having someone with us we will then experience tremendous moments that
are unforgettable even though sometimes the relationship will have to come to a
test where sometimes it will be destroyed just like in this music video. This video is
trying to tell the audience to care more about their loved ones because if they are
gone then we will be weak and alone. However, finding this message is quite hard
as you will need to find different signs in various of shots in order to come with a
conclusion that has the story of the music video.
Conventions
When looking over the old group research of the stereotypical codes and
conventions of dance music that comprises electronic dance. This video shows a
finished countertype of what the audience are expecting from the genre. When
looking at the music video there is different locations are displayed for example,
library, ship, outdoor fields and even under water where the actual conventions of
electronic dance is clubs and parties. This countertype is mostly accomplished by
the fact that the music video is narrative based rather than concept or
performance like most of the Electronic Dance music videos. In the music video
there are mainly two characters shown that are in love and they are calm when
comparing it to other electronic dance videos and the stereotypical of them is that
the young people are being considered as party animals, careless, and wild. In
addition, the stereotype of women being provocative and show as sexual objects is
not available within this music video which shows that this video goes against the
codes and conventions of the genre. However, I think that this music video does
follow one of the conventions which is the hand held camera. This is mostly
depicted throughout the electronic dance videos. For example, at the beginning of
the video a close ups and tilts are used in order to show the characters point of
view and what they are seeing. Overall, from my point of view I believe that this
music video has a narrative concept rather than concept and performance based.
This made the video to be unique and to stand out from others and also make the
audience more engaged as this what they would normally want to work with is the
