5. The Registry is the cornerstone of FundRef
The FundRef Registry provides a common
taxonomy of over 4000 funding body names that
FundRef participants should use to normalize
Funder Names and IDs for deposit.

• CrossRef maintains & distributes the Registry
• Elsevier processes changes (validation)
• Manuscript vendors, publishers and others use the Registry
• Members deposit FundRef metadata to CrossRef
13. FundRef and DataCite
The Registry is freely available for anyone to use
• Can be used for entry of metadata into Data Cite
DOIs with FundRef metadata can be deposited to CrossRef
• Requires CrossRef membership but can use DataCite prefix

Essential for minimizing chaos, Even with a common taxonomy variations will existData entry systems must allow for the “OTHER” option,… this means accepting free text!!!Name collisions will occur, each name is given a DOI … BUT people can be sloppyAbbreviations and organization hierarchy will be a challenge (click to show)
CrossRef is responsible for the registry Elsevier provided the initial data and currently is providing updates MANY deposits do take place with non-Registry names (the OTHER option) if a deposit uses an identifier it HAS to be one from the Registry Registry is distributed under CC 0 license
