The survey results show that the target audience for the music magazine is teenagers aged 15-20, with a focus on female readers. Most listeners prefer R&B music but the magazine will focus on rock and indie genres. Readers primarily consume music through internet sites or on their iPods. They buy music mostly through downloads or by ordering CDs online. Very few readers currently buy music magazines, so the new magazine will need a unique format. It will draw inspiration from the successful NME magazine. The magazine should include information on recent and famous music gigs to engage readers who sometimes or very often attend live shows.
1. Music Survey Results
The purpose of this market research is to discover the style, audience and genre of my music
magazine through the method of a survey or questionnaire given to a number of participants,
providing me with the information regarding how I should go about the creation of my magazine so I
can make changes to my initial approach in a way that will appease the target audience.
Age
15-20
45-50
This information shows that the vast majority of my audience will be teenagers between the ages of
15-20, with the minority replying with 45-50. With this in mind, I will approach the magazine in a
modern and youth influenced way, but still with relevant information about bands from which the
acts of the newer generation gain influence, therefore appealing to both age ranges.
Gender
Male
Female
2. The prominent gender is shown to be female, and so I will try to appeal to the female audience as
much as the male in my magazine. As it is a rock/indie influenced magazine, this will appeal as much
to the female audience as it will the male, with minimal efforts to isolate a certain audience by
making it accessible to both genders.

This information shows that the majority of recipients preferred R’n’B to any other genre. As my
magazine is set around rock and indie (with rock being the second most popular on the chart), I will
try to make it appeal to the audience of R’n’B, although the majority will still be based around rock.
How Do You Consume Music?
CD
Internet Sites
iPod
LP Player
iTunes
Cassette
Live Gigs
Radio
3. This information shows that the majority either listen to music on internet sites or iPod.
Considerable amounts also listen to music on iTunes, at live gigs or on CD. The fact that the
minorities are radio and LP show that in modern times older music platforms either aren’t as
desirable or aren’t as easily accessible as before. However this could also be a reflection on the age
range questioned, as younger people maybe won’t be as open to new ways of music or are happier
listening to music on portable devices or quickly accessible internet sites such as YouTube.
How Do You Buy Music?
Instore (HMV)
Order CD's Online
iTunes
Spotify
Streaming (downloads)
The majority said that they buy music through downloads, which is another example of the changing
methods of music consumption and the transition from old methods to new, although a significant
amount still buy CD’s in store or online. My magazine will appeal mostly to those who buy hard
copies of albums or singles, as many aspects of rock music still remain in the past methods of music
creation and consumption.
4. Do you read music magazines?
Yes
No
The vast majority of people who replied answered no. This shows that although music may be
extremely popular, magazines are still in the minority. Therefor for my magazine to work, I must try
to make it at least slightly different from the normal format of music magazines.
Sales
NME
Q
Kerrang!
The prominent answer is the NME, so therefore I will try to make my magazine relate closer to the
NME format than any other magazines.
5. How Often Do You Listen To Music?
Never
Very Rarely
Sometimes
1-3 times a week
Daily
As often as possible
This information shows that the majority of recipients try to listen to music as often as possible,
showing that music is very popular amongst the age range questioned (15-20), and so my magazine
will be centred around appeasing this age range by giving it a ‘modern’ style as well as the vintage
look I’m going to apply.

From this information, I can conclude that the vast majority of people who answered said that they
don’t buy music magazines, which shows perhaps a decline in music magazine consumption,
therefore leading to the fact that my magazine must appeal to the majority of recipients in order to
be successful in the music magazine franchise.
6. How often do you attend gigs?

The majority who replied to this question said that they attended gigs ‘sometimes’ therefore
showing popularity supported by the fact that 20% said that they attended gigs ‘very often’. In
response to this, I will try to include information on recent gigs and famous gigs by new and old
bands respectively, therefore appeasing to the majority of recipients who either replied ‘sometimes’
or ‘very often’.
