The mediaprojectthat we have chosenisto create a musicvideoforthe song ‘Underthe Bridge’by
the Red Hot Chili Peppers.Inthe videowe will be portrayingthe themesof isolationandthe toll of
drug abuse.These themescanbe seenthroughuse of Lacey’sRepertoire of Elements.
In termsof character, the videowill portrayayoungadultstrugglingwithagrippingdrugaddiction
duringthe narrative sections,andalive bandfor the performance section.The youngadultwill be
down-troddenandsickly looking,stereotypical of the appearance of adrug abuser.Hismovement
will be slowandheavy,trudging throughthe streetswithnoapparentemotion.The actorwill notbe
part of the band,insinuatinganexternallinkthatperhapsrelatestothe ‘everyman’druguser,with
no specificcharacterintended.
The narrative eventsfollowafragmentedstructure thatwill displaythe self-destructionof drug
abuse,followingthe youngadultashe strugglestoconformto life beforeturningtodrugabuse.The
narrative will conveythatthe characterisgrippedbya drugaddictionthatwill ultimatelytake his
life,whichisapparentinthe final segmentof the videowherebyitbecomesmore of a conceptual
narrative followingfromhiminjectingthe drugsintohisarm.The highertempoof the endof the
songwill befitthisincident,eventuallystoppingandslowingdownasif to representhisheartbeatas
he entersa drug inducedcoma.
The main iconographical aspectsof the videowill be the use of musical instrumentssuchasdrums
and guitars,whichare rock musiciconsapparentin almostall alternativerockvideos.The bandwill
representacontemporarymusical actperformingthe song,encapsulatingthe performance section
of the video.Othericonswill be the use of asyringe,if available,torepresenthisdrugaddiction
more vividly.
The mise enscene will convey the desolate deteriorationof hislife throughthe surroundings. We
will be filminginlocationsthatrepresentthis,usingpatheticfallacyto create adirectlinkbetween
hisisolationandthe worldaroundhim. Hisclotheswill be earthyincolourandtone,representinghis
downtroddenpersonalityandhomelessinsinuation.
Finally,the technical andaudiocodesusedwill enhance the feelingof isolation inthe video.One
technique thatwe will use isshallowdepthof field,whichwill capitalise onthe sense of
abandonmentandhisloneliness.
