2. Which age bracket do you fall
into?
15 and under
16 - 25
25 - 30
30-35
40+
From carrying out my questionnaire I have
discovered that the majority of the people I
interviewed were aged 16 to 25, which coincides
with my target audience’s age range of 16 to 24.
3. Which of the following are your
favourite types of music?
25
20
15
10
5
0
The participants I interviewed liked various different
genres of music, such as rap, reggae and chart/pop
music, however the four most popular genres chosen
were house, drum and bass, rock/indie and r’n’b/hip
hop. The two main genres that were selected(house
and drum and bass) will be included in my magazine.
4. When asked who their favourite artist is the respondants gave a number of different
artists, however, these following artists seemed to be popular within the responses:
- Netsky
- Chase and Status
- Swedish House Mafia
- Annie Mac
- Disclosure
- Sub Focus
- Knife Party
- Calvin Harris
- Nero
- Julio Bashmore
This shows that the audience will want predominately British artists within the
magazine, and so I will make sure I feature these artists within my magazine. The
audience also tended to say things such as ‘their music is original and fresh’, ‘it
makes me want to dance’ and ‘their live shows are amazing!’ – this information will
help me in other areas and aspects of the magazine.
5. How often do you attend gigs/raves/festivals?
Most weekends
Every few weeks
Every month
Occasionally/Every
few months
Never
From carrying out the questionnaire I have discovered that
my target audience don’t go out as often as I thought they
would have; this may be down to age (as some members
may be under 18 therefore may not be allowed to attend
certain raves/gigs/festivals) or simply preference, however I
have found that the majority tend to go to a
gig/rave/festival occasionally (i.e. every few months) or
every month.
6. The lineups consisted of many of the favourite artists/bands that
were listed. There were a few which stood out and i felt really
appealed to my target audience and went with the theme of my
magazine, some of these were:
- Calvin Harris, Annie Mac, Swedish House Mafia, High
Contrast, Sub Focus, DJ Zinc
- Sub Focus, Chase & Status, Knife Party, Disclosure, Skrillex
- Avicii, Skream, Benga, Annie Mac, Chase & Status, DJ Sly
- Redlight, Scuba, Julio Bashmore, Flux Pavilion, S.P.Y, Camo and
Krooked
- Andy C, DJ Hype, Netsky, DJ Fresh, Borgore, Disclosure
These results therefore show that although my audience have
favourite artists, there are some artists that were also featured;
every reader has their own specific taste and therefore I will try to
cater to this in my magazine by including many different types of
artists.
7. How often do you buy/read music
magazines?
Weekly
Monthly
Fortnightly
Occasionally/Every
few months
Never
From carrying out this questionnaire I was able to see that
the majority of my audience don’t buy magazines and this
was generally because of two answers; either they thought
they were too expensive or found that the leading
magazine for electronic dance music was too text heavy.
Therefore I will incorporate this information and apply it to
my magazine, making sure it is cheap and making sure the
information isn’t too text heavy.
8. What features would you like to see in a music
magazine if you were to purchase one?
Interviews with artists
Reviews of albums/singles
News about artists
Features/articles to do with things
related to genre
Information on upcoming raves
Competitions
Fashion
Other
The majority of the people I interviewed tended to go for
either news about artists, interviews with artists, reviews of
albums/singles and information on upcoming raves. This
therefore shows me what my target audience will want
featured in the magazine and I will try to include this
information in the magazine.
9. Does music play a big part in your
life?
Yes
No
The majority of the audience said that music played a big role in
their life; only one person said no. This therefore shows the
passionate side of my target audience – although they like to
have fun, they also take music seriously and it plays a major part
in their life and so I will make sure my magazine reflects this.
10. How much would you be willing to
pay for a music magazine?
£2 or under
£2.50
£3.00
£3.50
£4
£5 or more
The majority of my target audience selected £3.00 as
the perfect price for my magazine; this is backed up by
the fact many said they never really bought a music
magazine as the leading one was too expensive.
Therefore I will make sure that my magazine is within
the £3.00 price bracket.
11. On magazine front covers, which is most
likely to grab your attention?
The main image of
an artist
Stories on the front
Colours used
Free
gifts/Competitions
Artists listed
This question helped me to discover that the main image is key
in attracting the audience to the magazine; therefore I will
need to make sure my main image is eye catching and follows
dance music magazine conventions. Other significant things
that were shown to grab attention were the colours used and
the stories on the front.
