Evaluation question 4&5
1. WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT? HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
2. TARGET AUDIENCE-
CLASS
During my research I asked my target audience ‘In your opinion,
What is a suitable price for a music magazine?’ the response was
that 87% of my focus group agreed that a magazine of this
particular style should be priced within the range of £2.00-2.50
therefore leading me to the make the decision to price my
magazine at £2.00. This then indicates that my magazine is better
suited to those of a middle class. However due to my magazine
being centred around live music, promoting the best
concerts/festivals to attend to, the reader must have a large
interest in attending live events and therefore have the money to
attend them. Due to the high amount of reviews and interviews
regarding the live events, the magazine wouldn’t be of any
interest to those unable to go to festivals or concerts.
3. I decided to set my target audience within the age bracket of 16-20 years
old interesting in pop/dance music firstly because I fit into that particular
demographic therefore I am aware of what an audience in this age range
seek in order to fulfil their wants and needs. I looked for an area in the
market that lacks a particular style of music magazine which lead me to
choose live/festival music as my predominant feature. I decided to do this
because it creates a unique selling point for the magazine however does
not stray too far from existing magazines which I was able to use as a
guideline when choosing my demographic. Festivals and live concerts are
of great interest to readers in this age range with a wide variety of
festivals trending over twitter during the summer months and over 60,000
16-25 year olds attending Reading festival in 2013. I also decided that I
would focus on attracting females to my magazine rather than males
because once again I am aware of what a female looks for within a
magazine and I also wanted to carry out an extremely vibrant and colour
theme throughout the magazine which commonly attracts more female
attention rather than male.
TARGET AUDIENCE-
AGE AND GENDER
4. WHY I HAVE CHOSEN A MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE
Firstly I made the decision to choose a mainstream audience
because I found that niche markets can be quite limiting. When
conducting brief research into magazines with a niche market
such as ‘acoustic’ magazine I found that featuring artists were
hard to differentiate and the music you promote within the
magazine was of great similarity. This then encouraged me to
identify which mainstream features people in my particular
demographic enjoyed reading most which was found to be
live/festival music. By using mainstream live music I was able
to expand on my already existing knowledge of the most
current festivals and concerts allowing me to provide features
that would be of interest to a large mainstream audience within
the target age range.
5. APPEALING TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE
Mise-en-scene: The costume of my two featuring cover artists
are a predominant part of attracting my particular target
audience. The use of vibrant colours often appeals to the female
audience and creates an eye-catching and playful cover which is
essential in order to differentiate itself from competing
magazines on a shop shelf. I also used a plain background to pull
full focus on the artists and causing no distractions away from
text.
Language/text: I made the decision to keep the text on the cover
simplistic and eye catching using words such as ‘exclusive’ and
pull quotations to entice the reader into exploring the inside of
the magazine. This follows the typical conventions of Billboard
magazine, who commonly dominate their cover with a large
image leaving minimal space for basic informative text.
