Questionnaire analysis
Lauren Mcloughlin
How old are you?
AGE
16-18
19-21
21-25
26-30
30+
I covered my target audience age of 16-25
and got results from each of the categories
that the ages were spread throughout so I
got a good range of the ages. However
some people from the 30+ age range
answered so some of the results will be
from the wrong age group and most people
were in the 16-18 group so the results will
be biased towards the lower end of the
target population so I will still have to take
in to account the older ages.
What gender are you?
GENDER
Male
Female
I did not specify whether my magazine was
aimed towards male or female, however
most of the people who answered were
female so this will not be an accurate
representation of the male and female
population therefore I will still have to take
in to account the males despite the results.
Which of these magazines have you purchased?
MAGAZINES
Under the radar
Uncut
Mojo
The Wire
Rolling Stone
NME
In this question I listed the most
common indie magazines for the
audience to choose from. This
allows me to see which magazine
they were most likely to buy which
will help me to know what they are
most likely to buy and be attracted
to so I can make my magazine a bit
like these in terms of appearance
and layout but in a different way.
The results showed that NME and
Rolling Stone were the most
common so I will base my magazine
around these.
What did/do you like about these magazines?
INTEREST
Discovering new
bands/artists
Reading about
news in music
Reading about
your favourite
bands/artists
This question allows me to see
what people like about indie music
magazines that are already on the
market which helps me see what
they want in my magazine. Results
show that they like to see all the
options, particularly new bands and
artists so I could focus my magazine
around this new and upcoming
bands and artists
How often do you read indie music magazines?
FREQUENCY
Rarely
Sometimes
Often
Very often
These results show that most of the
people who answered my questionnaire
rarely read indie music magazines
therefore the results from the other
questions may not reflect the answers of
the people who are most likely to buy
the magazine and I will have to take in
to account that they are just a rough
guide
What do you expect to see in music magazines?
ANSWERS
Interviews
Posters
Music ratings
Music charts
Competitions
Reader's questions
Album releases
New artists
This question shows me that the
readers most expect to see music
ratings, posters and interviews. This will
help me to decide what to put in the
magazine so following the results I will
definitely include interviews, posters
and music ratings as they were the
most popular choices.
Which of these bands do you like?
BANDSCatfish and the
bottlemen
The 1975
Oasis
Florence and the
machine
HAIM
The Kooks
Milky chance
This question included a list of indie
bands to choose from so I could decide
which bands I could possibly include on
the cover page and throughout the
magazine. The results show that The
1975 and Oasis are the most common so
I will try and include at least one of these
on the cover or at least in the magazine
Have you ever purchased a magazine because
of an artist on the cover?
ANSWER
Yes
No
This question shows that the majority of people
have purchased a magazine because of the artist
on the front cover, which shows that it is
important which artist I choose to go on the front
cover therefor the last question helps as it shows
which artist I will use on the front cover as results
show this is likely to attract more buyers.
Which title do you prefer?
NAME
Indigo
Discover
Grunge
I narrowed down the magazine title options
the 3 I liked best for this question to let the
audience choose which one they liked best as
a title they like more will be more likely to
attract more customers. They chose Indigo
therefore I will use this as my magazine name.
Which colours do you think would work best?
COLOURS
Grey and white (some
purple)
Red, black and white
Colourful (pink, purple,
blue etc)
Light blue and off white
This question shows me that most
people prefer the colours grey and
white with some purple so I will use
this as my colour scheme as it will be
most likely to attract customers as
the results have shown.
How many pages are suitable?
PAGES
30-50
50-80
90-120
120+
This question shows me that most people would
prefer 50-80 pages therefore this is how many
pages I will use otherwise the audience may think
there is too much or too little.
How much would you be willing to pay?
AMOUNT
£2.50-£3.50
£3.50-£4.50
£4.50+
This question shows me that an equal amount
of people are willing to pay £2.50-£3.50 as
£3.50-£4.50 therefore I will probably price my
magazine between £3.50 and £4.50 as won’t
be losing customers but I will be able to get as
much profit from my magazine as possible
without over charging by the customers’
standards.
How would you prefer to see the artist in the
magazine?
POSE
Posed
Natural
Performing
This question shows that they would rather
see the artist natural or performing rather
than posed in the magazine therefore I will
get these shots as opposed to making the
artist pose in a fake way as this is not what
the customers want to see.
What would you like to know about the
artist?
INTEREST
Past gigs (favourite one,
experiences etc)
How they started singing
Music preferences
This question helps me with what
questions to ask the artist as the
audience would most like to hear
about past gigs and how they
started singing mostly, as well as
music preferences. I asked this
question because there would be
no point asking the artist about
things the readers don’t want to
hear about.
Would you take part in a magazine competition?
ANSWER
Yes
No
This question shows me that most of the readers
would not take part in a magazine competition, so I
will not put one in my magazine and it would not be
beneficial to the reader so there would be no point
putting one in.
How many columns would you prefer on the
contents page?
SALES
one - two
two - three
three - four
This question shows that the customers want
2-3 columns on the contents page so I will use
either 2 or 3 columns so that they don’t think
there is too much or too little and is also what
they would prefer to see.
How often would you like the magazine to be
released?
FREQUENCY
Weekly
Bi-weekly
Monthly
These results show that the customers would
rather the magazine was published monthly I will
publish my magazine monthly as weekly or bi-
weekly will be too often and many customers may
choose not to buy it for this reason.
How often do you attend gigs?
FREQUENCY
Rarely
Sometimes
Often
Very often
This shows that most of the customers attend
gigs often or sometimes, therefore it would be
beneficial to include an upcoming gig section
in my magazine as readers would find this
useful.
Do you listen to new music you read about in
magazines?
ANSWER
Yes
No
Sometimes
This shows that most readers listen to new music
they read about in magazines therefore I will do
my main article on a new artist and tell the
readers where they can find their music as most
will listen to it. The fact that many of them may
then listen to this artist means the interview will
be beneficial for the artist.
Which free gifts do you like from magazines?
GIFT
Posters
CD
Vouchers
This shows that the customers would
equally like to receive posters, CDs and
vouchers in the magazine so I could
include any od these which will help to
attract buyers.

  • 2. How old are you? AGE 16-18 19-21 21-25 26-30 30+ I covered my target audience age of 16-25 and got results from each of the categories that the ages were spread throughout so I got a good range of the ages. However some people from the 30+ age range answered so some of the results will be from the wrong age group and most people were in the 16-18 group so the results will be biased towards the lower end of the target population so I will still have to take in to account the older ages.
  • 3. What gender are you? GENDER Male Female I did not specify whether my magazine was aimed towards male or female, however most of the people who answered were female so this will not be an accurate representation of the male and female population therefore I will still have to take in to account the males despite the results.
  • 4. Which of these magazines have you purchased?
