The document discusses location ideas for the front cover of a dance music magazine featuring a new artist. It considers that magazines typically use plain backgrounds that match their color scheme or glamorous locations like beaches or pools in Ibiza. However, to reflect that the artist is new, the proposed cover will not use typical settings but will have a tongue-in-cheek feel using props like a piñata to signify the artist's debut in Ibiza and convey his fun personality. The artist will be portrayed against a plain background with artificial lighting to portray his status as a newcomer.
1. Location Ideas
From all of my other research and planning I have
discovered that dance music magazines tend to have
various locations as their setting for the front cover. They
often have plain yet brightly coloured backgrounds which
match their colour scheme and occasionally have
glamorous settings such as foreign countries (i.e. Ibiza or
Miami) and/or things associated with them, such as
swimming pools or beaches.
My magazine intends to be an ‘Ibiza Special’ in which my
featured artist is introduced as a new artist; it must reflect
the fact he is new and also represent him as a fun,
relatable artist to my audience. Aswell as this, it must be
vibrant, fun and original so that it can attract my target
audience.

2. In order to reflect the fact he is new, and it will be his first
year DJ-ing in Ibiza, I will not have him in a typical,
swimming pool or villa setting. Instead I intend to give the
images a very tongue-in-cheek feel through the use of
props and mise-en-scene elements such as lighting. All my
pictures will feature the use of a piñata as a prop; this will
signify that the double page spread will be speaking
about how my artist will be headlining in Ibiza this year.
The piñata also reflects the funand originality my artist
hopes to bring to the dance music scene; he isn’t all
about looking cool and being trendy, like many other
artists are within the genre. It shows he has fun when
doing his sets, and isn’t afraid to mess around and so from
this my readers will be sure to know that his set will be an
amazing experience (if they ever get the privilege to see
him live!). The piñata, along with his sunglasses and use of
costume (shorts) will help the clever target audience
instantly link the magazine to Ibiza. My artist will be stood
behind a neutral/plain background and will have artificial
lighting (disguised as ambient lighting) in order to reflect
the fact he is a newcomer; he hasn’t quite made it within
the industry just yet.
Here are examples of the use of basic settings within
Mixmag:
3. Before I took my images, I carried out a reconnaissance
to make sure the setting, a white/cream coloured wall,
was suitable for the images. My setting was again, very
basic, and so this plain wall was the perfect canvas for my
images. Here are some images of the reconnaissance I
carried out:
