2. Layout/rule of thirds:
The main image is placesdin the middle
of the page, with the articles on the
right hand side. The rule of thirds have
been used in terms of the positioning of
the main image, as well as the masthead
placed in the pug (the same as the front
cover.)
Fonts:
The font of features such as the masthead is
the same as the front cover. The contents title
and the article titles are the same typography
also. This is the same for all the writing on the
page, except some titles are different in terms
of the size. For example the contents title
,masthead , and the picture caption are in a
larger size. This is so that it is eye-catching to
the reader.
Also, the use of the drop cap for the editorial
letter (“T”) and the caption “Touring special”
also begins with a T shows that they are linked
and anchor with each other.
Mode of address/language used :
The editorial letter uses an informal register. This is
seen by the use of the sentence “Thank god the sun
has dissapeared,eh?”The use of this could be to
engage the target audience and make them feel
included and be able to relate to what the writer is
talking about. Also,, the use of “eh?” connotes that
the text is written, how it`s meant to be spoken.
The topic of the weather could denote that it is a
general way to start speech (or in this case
writing.)But could connote that as NME is a British
magazine, people would be able to relate.
Columns:
The columns are split, so that the main
articles are eye-catching to the target
audience. This can be seen, as on the right
hand side the article titles are in a big and
bold typography. Whereas the band index on
the left hand side is in a small font and
wouldn’t attract the target audiences
attention as much.
Also, the band index column is ordered
alphabetically so it makes it easier for people
to find what they are looking for.
Page numbers:
The page numbers on both columns (band index
and the main articles) are all random and not in a
particular order.(Also, page numbers of articles are
not linked to specific pictures as there is only one
main image.)
Caption:
The caption of the picture “Touring special”
includes the buzz word “special” to excite and
entice the target audience into reading and buying
the magazine. The main image anchors to the
caption due to the mis-en-scene of the tour bus .
Date:
Shows when the
magazine was issued.
House style:
The house colours of the contents page are the
same as the cover page. It sticks to the main
colours of black, red and white. But, the words
“subscribe today..” at the bottom right hand pug is
in a bright yellow colour so that it stands out to
the target audience. Also, this could have been
done deliberately as it is next to the editorial
letter, this is so that people are more likely to
glance and be attracted to it.
Also, the house style is somewhat retro and
vintage and links to the typography of the
masthead. This is due to the classic red, white and
black colours which could symbolically represent
the theme of “old-school.”
Also the use of the filter on the main image, being
an almost worn out look adds to this theme.
Masthead:
The masthead consists of an old-school theme
due to the classic red, white and black colour
combination. Also, it has a thick white stroke
added to it, this is so that it is bold and “pops”
off of the page. This makes it eye-catching to
the target audience.
Target audience:
The target audience are people who are
aged between 17-25 and are into the genre
of hip-hop music. This can be seen due to
the artists that specialize in this sub-genre
of music, for example “Egyptian hip hop.”
Main image:
The deconstruction of the main image (which is a medium shot type) can be analysed in
terms of things such as the mis-en-scene of the red tour bus in the background. This
anchors to the caption of “touring special. "Also, the colour red could symbolically be
present, to link to the house colour (of red, white and black.)In the same way, the colour
of the girls white hair could also be present to link with the house colours. Also, the mis-
en-scene of the girls lively body language and happy facial expression could also
symbolically connote that she is enjoying herself. This technique is also used on the front
cover with the model representing the same ideas. Also, the picture captures the bright
blue background of the sky. This is deliberately present as it anchors to the part of the
editorial letter where the topic of sunny weather is mentioned.
The main image is on top of a “blackboard styled” background. This connotes that the
magazine has an old-school/retro theme to it.Also, the caption of “touring special” is in a
worn out white typography which could connote that it is in a “chalk style. "This again
reinforces ideas of the old-school theme. And lastly, the white stroke/border could
symbolically represent a “polaroid” which is known as a vintage/old school item. This also
adds to the theme.
