2. Convections of Page layout
I have concluded that the layout of the magazines are usually busy
containing a lot of information which follows the route-of-the-eye.
Masthead is also frequently at the top of the page in a bold sans serif
font which connotes masculinity therefore appealing to the target
audience. The magazines regularly features a mid-shot of a band
relates to the genre, this attracts even more attention to people who
enjoy the genre as they will recognise the artist on the front cover
will consequently become interested which makes them want to read
the magazine.
3. Conventions of Genre
Rock magazines fit the genre in a variety of ways through the font,
and images. The font is usually sans serif. This connotes masculinity
which relates to the target audience of the magazine making them
likely to pick up the magazine. The colours used usually have emotive
connections to the rock genre and the target audience. For example on
the front cover of this Kerrang! magazine the colour yellow is used on
text showing the artists name. Yellow implies energy and joy, this can
relate to the artist himself as he is energetic and enthusiastic. This can
also be used to attract the reader towards the main cover line as it
out to the rest of the page. The image used on the front cover of this
Kerrang! issue has a direct mode of address as the artist is looking
straight at the camera which makes the reader feel like the artist is
looking at him. This creates a bond between the reader and magazine.
4. Conventions of page layout
This double page spread has a clear colour pallet which is
extremely effective. The white text on the black background
makes the text stand out and become more eye catching whilst
the red text draws your eye towards the important features. All
the images have been edited into a black and white filter which
makes them fit the colour scheme. The main image on the left
takes up the whole page which gives it importance and also
appeals to the target audience as large images and less text
attracts the reader to the page. The quote that has been pulled
form the article gives a ‘teaser’ of what the article is about.
5. Conventions of genre
The font used on this double spread is synonymous to other
font styles used throughout the rock genre of magazines. The
font is sans serif and gritty which gives a masculine effect and
therefore relates to the target audience. As seen on the last
slide, there is a clear colour pallet used, these colours are
with the rock genre. For example black is an extremely
colour used in all rock magazines which projects darkness and
evil. The colour red also has demonic connotations which links
to darkness and evil. Overall the colours used in this double
page spread are all somewhat related to the rock genre. The
images used are in black and white, this is a common theme
the rock genre as black clothes are frequently worn therefore
the images
