How lighting, cameras and software improved my photography skills
1. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT
ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES
FROM THE PROCESS OF
CONSTRUCTING THIS
PRODUCT?
2. When taking photos for my magazine during the preliminary task, I
struggled to get good looking pictures inside due to issues with white
balance. This time round I decided to take photos in a proper photo
studio with the correct lighting to rectify this issue. The LED light
panels ensured Jake, the person in the main image, has sufficient
lighting to make sure it looked right. The panels where very easy to
use, just plug them in and turn them on, and place them in front of
the subject. For photos in different rooms, I made sure the ceiling
lights were bright enough to not cause an orange looking overlay.
LED PANELS
3. To take the photos, I used the college cameras again. Due to using
the exact same model last time, I didn’t have any technical issues
using it. However I did try and improve my framing this time round as
in the preliminary task my incorrect framing caused a lot of issues. I
also tried to include some depth of field effects properly rather than
adding them in Photoshop. This created a more natural look, making
photos look more professional and make the focus point stand out
much more.
DIGITAL CAMERA
4. Again with Photoshop, due to using it in the preliminary task I didn’t
have that many issues. Due to my photos being better this time, they
didn’t need much editing at all – just cropping, masking and
repositioning. My planning also helped this process as I didn’t have to
think of what to do on the spot, meaning I could concentrate more on
working with Photoshop and getting everything to work as it should.
The only real issue I had was working with text and I found really hard
to edit the size of the text box side when adding it to the front and
contents pages. I ended up having to re draw text boxes if I had to
resize them as I couldn’t figure out how to change what was already
there.
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
5. Originally with my front cover, I had a pattern in the background
which was made in Illustrator. Illustrator is a program that I have no
past experience using, so I had no idea how to use it. After searching
for some online tutorials about how to get the one I desired, I
managed to follow it until everything was complete. I can’t say that I
really understood what tools I was using; I just followed the video
tutorial exactly so that everything worked. The only issue I had with it
was setting up the wrong page size as due to the pattern repeating
itself, it needed to be the correct length so that it the pattern finished
as the page did and didn’t have any half cut off.

ADOBE INDESIGN
7. One of the ways I displayed my project was through the online website
called Prezi. Prezi allowed me to insert text and images and display
them in an interactive presentation. The website is very easy to use
how can sometimes become irresponsive and glitch out which can
make it difficult to use a times. However when it does work well, it
makes creating presentations very easy as it does a lot of the work
for you. All the animation is already loaded to a template, all I have to
do it insert the images and text and that is it – Prezi makes the rest.
It also gave me embed code which I can insert into my blog via the
html section and display it on there in its own interactive frame.

8. Word is a program that I’ve been using from a very early age as well
as in the past with my media course amongst others meaning it is
very easier to use and formed the basis for anything with text on
throughout the creation of the magazine. Anything that needed a lot
of text was first written in Word so that I can use features such as
spell check as well as word count to make sure what I had put was
correct and was long enough. Once checked over I could then easily
copy it into whatever program I needed, such as Prezi, InDesign,
PowerPoint and Blogger.
MICROSOFT WORD
9. PowerPoint was used as another interesting way to display
information. Just like Prezi, I could insert images and text and
combine them with animations and transitions portray information in
a more exciting way. As like word I have been using PowerPoint for a
very long time so I didn’t experience any problems with using it.
MICROSOFT POWERPOINT
10. Sony Vegas is video editing software that provides more possibilities
that standard software such as movie maker. It is a piece of software
that I have been using also for a long time as video editing is
somewhat of a hobby. It allows me to add a combination of images,
text, video and audio whilst adding effects and transitions as well as
layering to give me an overall better looking final video than what
movie maker could give me.

11. I still find Blogger not the easiest thing to use, even after using for all
of my preliminary task. Although it does allow me to insert text and
images, as well as HTML code for when I want to embed other things,
it can be glitchy and hard to use. Trying to move images around within
Blogger is very difficult to do, however it just made me use better
methods of displaying information. However Blogger is very good at
what it is actually meant to do, and that is displaying different posts
in order where all of my work can be easily seen in one place.
