How did you attract and address your audience
As I am the same age as my target audience and I like listening to the genre of my magazine I could
put my own personal experience into making my magazine attract my target audience. I spoke to the
people around me and found out what they would like to appear on a magazine focusing on the rock,
pop punk genre. I also did research into similar magazine.
I attracted my audience with Puffs, Cover lines, Images, Competitions as well as other things. My puff
“Don’t Miss, 50 Best albums of 2014” would attract my audience because the words “Don’t Miss”
would mean that they would want to read it as they wouldn’t want to be left out and not be up to date.
The word “Best” would attract my audience as it would encourage them as they will want to know
what the best albums to listen to are. My Cover lines will attract my audience because the articles
relate to things that my target audience would find interesting. They would want to know if their
favourite bands are in the studio (“Purple Ghost in the studio”) as to them it means a new album and
then the possibility of a tour. They would also want to know if icons are in a new band (“Karun Sharma
new bands?”) as this is something that would be important and interesting to them. My main image on
the cover would appeal to my audience as the boy is attractive so females would “fancy” him and
boys would see him as a “fashion icon”. He matches the connotations of the rock, pop punk genre so
my target audience would associate with him. My top line is a competition (“Win Reading and Leeds
tickets!”) this competition would attract my target audience because this festival is popular in the rock
world so my target audience would be the sort of people who would want to go so therefore they
would want to buy my magazine in order to be in with a chance of winning.
The features on my contents page would attract my target audience as they are all articles that would
interest my target audience. They would find the free posters appealing because they would enjoy
putting pictures of their favourite bands up on their bedroom walls. They would like the images as the
instruments would appeal to my target audience because they themselves would play or wish they
played an instrument so my audience would be able to relate to the images. The large bold text used
for titles (such as on my double page spread) would attract my audience because it stands out so
they can easily read it and it shows that what my magazine is talking about is important. Similarly my
masthead would attract my audience because it is bold and easy to read. The font can be associated
with rock and so can the colour it is – black. My colour scheme Black, Red, White and Grey would
attract my audience because these colours are commonly associated with the rock, pop punk genre
so my audience would recognise that my magazine is focusing on that genre.
I address my audience using informal language and personal pronouns. My strapline (“Your monthly
music magazine”) suggests that my magazine is just for them. In my editors message on contents I
say “It gives me....give to you” the words “me” and “you” this makes my magazine address my
magazine in a personal, one to one way. It will make my audience feel as though I am talking directly
to them and as if this magazine is just for them. It allows my audience to feel involved in my
magazine. I use informal language such as “guys” and “Hell yeah” this is appropriate for my target
audience as they are teenagers so the best way to address them is in a casual way as this is what is
most likely going to appeal to them and make them want to read my articles. As if I used big
complicated words they may not understand what is trying to be said and not want to read my
magazine. I addressed my audience with a direct mode of address. The main image on both my Front
cover and Double page spread use a direct mode of address as Trav is looking straight at the
camera, this makes the audience feel as though he is making eye contact with them, again making
them feel involved in my magazine.

Evaluation Question 5

  • 1. How did you attract and address your audience As I am the same age as my target audience and I like listening to the genre of my magazine I could put my own personal experience into making my magazine attract my target audience. I spoke to the people around me and found out what they would like to appear on a magazine focusing on the rock, pop punk genre. I also did research into similar magazine. I attracted my audience with Puffs, Cover lines, Images, Competitions as well as other things. My puff “Don’t Miss, 50 Best albums of 2014” would attract my audience because the words “Don’t Miss” would mean that they would want to read it as they wouldn’t want to be left out and not be up to date. The word “Best” would attract my audience as it would encourage them as they will want to know what the best albums to listen to are. My Cover lines will attract my audience because the articles relate to things that my target audience would find interesting. They would want to know if their favourite bands are in the studio (“Purple Ghost in the studio”) as to them it means a new album and then the possibility of a tour. They would also want to know if icons are in a new band (“Karun Sharma new bands?”) as this is something that would be important and interesting to them. My main image on the cover would appeal to my audience as the boy is attractive so females would “fancy” him and boys would see him as a “fashion icon”. He matches the connotations of the rock, pop punk genre so my target audience would associate with him. My top line is a competition (“Win Reading and Leeds tickets!”) this competition would attract my target audience because this festival is popular in the rock world so my target audience would be the sort of people who would want to go so therefore they would want to buy my magazine in order to be in with a chance of winning. The features on my contents page would attract my target audience as they are all articles that would interest my target audience. They would find the free posters appealing because they would enjoy putting pictures of their favourite bands up on their bedroom walls. They would like the images as the instruments would appeal to my target audience because they themselves would play or wish they played an instrument so my audience would be able to relate to the images. The large bold text used for titles (such as on my double page spread) would attract my audience because it stands out so they can easily read it and it shows that what my magazine is talking about is important. Similarly my masthead would attract my audience because it is bold and easy to read. The font can be associated with rock and so can the colour it is – black. My colour scheme Black, Red, White and Grey would attract my audience because these colours are commonly associated with the rock, pop punk genre so my audience would recognise that my magazine is focusing on that genre. I address my audience using informal language and personal pronouns. My strapline (“Your monthly music magazine”) suggests that my magazine is just for them. In my editors message on contents I say “It gives me....give to you” the words “me” and “you” this makes my magazine address my magazine in a personal, one to one way. It will make my audience feel as though I am talking directly to them and as if this magazine is just for them. It allows my audience to feel involved in my magazine. I use informal language such as “guys” and “Hell yeah” this is appropriate for my target audience as they are teenagers so the best way to address them is in a casual way as this is what is most likely going to appeal to them and make them want to read my articles. As if I used big complicated words they may not understand what is trying to be said and not want to read my magazine. I addressed my audience with a direct mode of address. The main image on both my Front cover and Double page spread use a direct mode of address as Trav is looking straight at the camera, this makes the audience feel as though he is making eye contact with them, again making them feel involved in my magazine.
