Assure Unit Plan Day 1
Day One: Introduction to the Olympics
I. Analyze the Learners: There are twenty students in my fourth grade class. In this class
there are seven African Americans, and Three Chinese Americans. The number of
girls I have in class is eight and I have twelve boys. As well they are between the ages
of eight and ten. These students are not very good test takers, so I will need to
incorporate a wide variety of teaching methods to accommodate their learning
individual learning styles.
II. State Objectives: My students will describe aspects of important Olympic
symbols (flags, and anthems) and be able to identify the different symbols by the
utilization of maps, visual aids, and group projects by the end of the day with 90%
accuracy.
III. Selecting Methods, Material, and Media: With the different learning styles of my
students I will need to use these methods, media, and materials in my lesson:
• Smart Board: the Smart Board will be utilized to show maps, and other visual aids
to the class.
• Maps: World maps will be supplied by me, so students can see the different places
in the world the Olympics are held.
• YouTube/Songs: Playing different National Anthems for different world countries.
• Poster Materials (markers, poster board, glue scissors): students will create a
collage poster that shows different symbols they learned about that they found
interesting.
2. • Facebook: Students will access the class page that I created, they will like and
follow the page then will leave a brief comment of what they enjoyed about the
lesson for the day.
IV. Utilizing Media and Materials: I will check so make sure all the electronics are
working properly before starting the lesson (Smart Board, computers, etc.) I will
make sure that my visual aids and websites going to be used are appropriate and
are ridden free of inappropriate material. The desks will be arranged in groups of four
so there will be five groups of four working together in group learning. The poster
board material will be put away until it is time so it will avoid student distraction to the
supplies if they were laying out in the room.
V. Require Learner Participation: In order to gain the students attention and interest in
the subject of Olympic History I will tell them they are going back to the beginning of
the Modern Olympics in Athens, Greece. I will provide the students a world map (5
world maps for the 5 groups) and show them where it actually took place. I will be
telling them that will be exploring the symbols, motto, oath, and different Anthems
from different world countries.
Once this is done, I will explain to the students that different countries have
different Anthems that describe their culture and personality and how important it is to
be tolerant and respectful of others even if their anthem sounds differently. I will be sure
to include the Chinese National Anthem and any other country that may be represented
in the class. I will then have a class discussion to get the feelings of the class and
answer any questions they may have. I will show the students via the Smart Board the
main olympic symbols and the meaning behind them by going to different websites.
Each group will then go to the back of the room to the 5 computers (each group shares
a computer) and will look up Olympic symbols for themselves and compare and contrast
them from the beginning of the Modern Olympics to now and see if there were any
difference or if they remained the same, this will lead to a class discussion afterwards.
3. Then they will grab visual aids that I have supplied that contain many items on the
Olympics including tons of symbols and they will create a group poster in which they will
display their favorite symbols or anything they found out about olympic history on their
poster. Once this is done the group will present their findings to the class and briefly
describe the process they took in deciding and why the decided on the symbols they
did. For a small take home assignment, I will have the students join the Facebook page
I created and post a small comment or question they have about the lesson shared that
day. This will provide feedback for me to gauge their interest.
VI. Evaluate and Revise: To help adapt to the students learning style and to assess
learner comprehension I will:
• Create class discussion
• Require that all students actively participate in the group work and when they present
their findings.
• Walk around and ask questions regarding the symbols they are looking at or why
having respect for others culturally is important.
• Making sure that their poster contains at least 4 symbols on their poster.
