Day One: Holiday traditions
I.

Analyze Learners: In my class, there are twenty students in my fourth grade class
(eleven of whom are girls, and the other nine are boys). In addition, there are two Muslims,
three Jewish, and two African Americans. With all of the diversity in my classroom, I will
incorporate a variety of different lessons to teach different holiday traditions, covering the
different cultural backgrounds of the class (such as: group presentations, hands on art
projects, videos, and games)

II. State Objectives: My fourth grade students will be able to identify and describe the different
holiday traditions, from different cultures. They will do this by working on hands on crafts
making different holiday symbols, working on group presentations about selected cultural
traditions, videos, and game puzzles by the end of the week with 95% accuracy.
III. Selecting Methods, Materials, and Media: In order to accommodate for the various
cultural backgrounds of my students, I will utilize the following methods, media, and
materials throughout this lesson:
i)

Video: I will use the smart board throughout this lesson to show short
historical clips about different cultural holiday traditions. Where
students will gather information for there presentations at the end of
the week.

ii) Songs: In this section of the lesson, students will listen to different
songs played during the holidays of different cultures.
iii) Group Projects: The students will work together to create their
presentations for the end of the week. Students will have a poster
board where they will describe the cultural holiday tradition that was
assigned to them.
iv) Hands on Art: Students will create works of art and/ or symbols of
cultural holiday symbols (such as: cross, tree, candles, etc)
IV.

Utilizing Methods and Materials: Prior to each class, I will check that all the art
supplies is laid out and ready to go (such as: glue, markers, paper, crayons, scissors,
etc), along with the smart board videos set up and loaded and ready to show. I will also
set up the students chairs and tables to where they can work in groups for the art
projects and so they can work on their presentations for the end of the week.

V.

Require Learner Participation: In order to introduce this lesson, I will inform the
students that each cultural background is different (muslim, jewish, and african
american). The first day I will have a short video on Jewish Holiday traditions, where
will listen and watch the video gathering information for their presentations for the end of
the week. Students will be ask to write 2 things that they learned from the video at the
beginning of class. Next students will move on to the next part of the lesson by listening
Jewish Songs that are played during the holidays, and after that they will move on to
hands on art making, for a visual ad for there presentations

VI.

Evaluate and Revise: In order to assess student comprehension, I will:
• Stimulate class discussion
• have a question to be answered of what they learned from last class.
• Circulate around the room to check that all students are being involved in group
work and group activities.
• Ask students what are the differences in the traditions.
• Presentation on selected Holidays at the end of the week.
