OUTCOMES OF DEMOCRACY
we are going to discuss on
 the expectation from
democracy
 examine the record of
democracy on these
expectations.
Democracy is a better form of government
when compared with dictatorship or any other
alternative.
Reasons are:-
 Promotes equality among citizens
 Enhances the dignity of the individual
 Improves the quality of decision making
 Provides a method to resolve conflicts and
 Allows a room to correct mistakes.
Accountable
Responsive
Legitimate Government
 Accountable: Democratic government is
answerable to the people or to the parliament
 Responsive Government:
It responds positively to needs and aspiration of
the people. The government takes decisions, form
policies which are acceptable to the people.
 Legitimate Government:
Legitimate government is a government which
works according to set of rules i.e., Government
takes decisions by following norms and a proper
procedure.
There is transparency. For example, In India the
government has provided citizens the Right to
Information Act which empowers the people to
find how the government is working.
STILL
???????????????????????????
ON WHETHER IT IS BEST
GOV.T OR NOT
There is still dilemma because
democracy is seen to be good in
principle, but felt to be not so
good in its practice.
this invite people to think about
outcomes of democracy.
There are many people who think that democracy
produces less effective governments because:
 It always worries about majorities and public
opinions.
 It delays its decisions.
 Corruption.
 Reduction of inequality and Poverty
 Economic growth and development fail
What we expect: what we see:
• If one considers all democracies and
all dictatorship for the last 50 years
dictatorship has slightly higher rate
of economic growth.
. It is better to prefer democracy as
it has several other positive
outcomes.
 We expect democracies to reduce economic
disparities but it failed on this issue.
 Here small number of ultra-rich enjoy a highly
disproportionate share of wealth and income.
 The share of rich class is increasing whereas those
who are at the bottom of the society have very
little to depend upon.
 Even in India, the poor constitute a large
proportion of our voters. Yet democratically
elected governments do not appear to be as keen to
address the question of poverty as you would
expect them to.
POLITICAL EQUALITY
 If not in economic, Democracies are baised on
political equality.
 All individuals have equal weight in electing
representatives.
 As compare: politically equality but
economically still inequality
 To accommodate social diversities, democracy
must fulfill some basic conditions in order to
achieve this outcome:
 Democracy is not simply rule by majority opinion.
The majority always needs to work with the
minority so that government functions to represent
the general view. However, the majority and
minority opinions are not permanent.
 Here majority does not become ruler by majority
community in terms of religion or race or linguistic
group etc. Majority means that in case of very
decision or in case of very election, different
persons and groups may and can form a majority.
 Democracy is a better option than other forms
of government because it promotes dignity and
freedom of the individual
 Dignity and freedom to women
 Caste system in India

Out comes of democracy

  • 1. OUTCOMES OF DEMOCRACY we are going to discuss on  the expectation from democracy  examine the record of democracy on these expectations.
  • 2. Democracy is a better form of government when compared with dictatorship or any other alternative. Reasons are:-  Promotes equality among citizens  Enhances the dignity of the individual  Improves the quality of decision making  Provides a method to resolve conflicts and  Allows a room to correct mistakes.
  • 4.  Accountable: Democratic government is answerable to the people or to the parliament  Responsive Government: It responds positively to needs and aspiration of the people. The government takes decisions, form policies which are acceptable to the people.  Legitimate Government: Legitimate government is a government which works according to set of rules i.e., Government takes decisions by following norms and a proper procedure. There is transparency. For example, In India the government has provided citizens the Right to Information Act which empowers the people to find how the government is working.
  • 6. There is still dilemma because democracy is seen to be good in principle, but felt to be not so good in its practice. this invite people to think about outcomes of democracy.
  • 7. There are many people who think that democracy produces less effective governments because:  It always worries about majorities and public opinions.  It delays its decisions.  Corruption.  Reduction of inequality and Poverty  Economic growth and development fail
  • 8. What we expect: what we see:
  • 9. • If one considers all democracies and all dictatorship for the last 50 years dictatorship has slightly higher rate of economic growth. . It is better to prefer democracy as it has several other positive outcomes.
  • 10.  We expect democracies to reduce economic disparities but it failed on this issue.  Here small number of ultra-rich enjoy a highly disproportionate share of wealth and income.  The share of rich class is increasing whereas those who are at the bottom of the society have very little to depend upon.  Even in India, the poor constitute a large proportion of our voters. Yet democratically elected governments do not appear to be as keen to address the question of poverty as you would expect them to.
  • 11. POLITICAL EQUALITY  If not in economic, Democracies are baised on political equality.  All individuals have equal weight in electing representatives.  As compare: politically equality but economically still inequality
  • 12.  To accommodate social diversities, democracy must fulfill some basic conditions in order to achieve this outcome:  Democracy is not simply rule by majority opinion. The majority always needs to work with the minority so that government functions to represent the general view. However, the majority and minority opinions are not permanent.  Here majority does not become ruler by majority community in terms of religion or race or linguistic group etc. Majority means that in case of very decision or in case of very election, different persons and groups may and can form a majority.
  • 13.  Democracy is a better option than other forms of government because it promotes dignity and freedom of the individual  Dignity and freedom to women  Caste system in India
