ducational leadership plays a
Ecrucial role in shaping the learning
environment and influencing the
academic and personal growth of students. In
recent years, the concept of emotional
intelligence (EI) has gained significant
recognition as an essential attribute for
effective leaders, particularly in the education
sector. Emotional intelligence refers to the
ability to understand and manage emotions,
both in oneself and others, to foster positive
relationships and make informed decisions.
Let us explore the importance of emotional
intelligence in educational leadership and
how it enhances the overall educational
experience for students, teachers, and the
entire school community.

Building Positive Relationships
Educational leaders with high
emotional intelligence are adept at
building positive and meaningful
relationships with their staff, students,
parents, and other stakeholders. They
possess a deep understanding of the
emotions and needs of others, enabling
them to empathize and connect with
individuals on a personal level. By
fostering positive relationships, these
leaders create a supportive and
inclusive school culture, where trust
and collaboration flourish, leading to
enhanced teamwork and overall well-
being.
Empowering Teachers and Staff
Emotionally intelligent leaders
empower their teachers and staff by
recognizing their strengths and
providing the necessary support and
resources. They actively listen to their
educators' concerns and ideas, valuing
their contributions and fostering a
sense of ownership and pride in their
work. By nurturing a supportive work
environment, educational leaders can
enhance teacher satisfaction and
motivation, leading to improved
student outcomes.
Supporting Student Emotional Well-
being
Educational leaders with high
emotional intelligence prioritize
student emotional well-being alongside
academic achievements. They
recognize that students' emotional
states directly impact their learning
experiences. By providing resources
and support for students' social and
emotional development, these leaders
create a nurturing environment that
fosters positive mental health and
overall student success.
Encouraging Growth Mindset
Emotionally intelligent leaders
encourage a growth mindset among
their students and staff. They
emphasize the importance of learning
from failures and viewing challenges
as opportunities for growth and
improvement. By cultivating a growth
mindset, educational leaders foster
resilience, adaptability, and a positive
attitude towards learning.
Modelling Emotional Regulation
Leaders with emotional intelligence
serve as role models for emotional
regulation. They demonstrate the
ability to manage stress, remain
composed under pressure, and respond
to challenging situations with
composure and tact. Through their
actions, they instil valuable emotional
regulation skills in both students and
staff, creating a culture of emotional
balance and self-awareness.
Promoting Inclusivity
Emotionally intelligent leaders are
proponents of inclusivity and diversity
within the school community. They
celebrate individual differences and
promote a culture of respect and
understanding. By embracing diversity,
educational leaders foster a sense of
belonging among students and staff
from different backgrounds, promoting
a rich and inclusive learning
environment.
Making Informed Decisions
Educational leadership involves
making numerous decisions that
impact the school and its stakeholders.
Emotionally intelligent leaders take
emotions into account when making
decisions, recognizing that decisions
can elicit various emotional responses.
By considering emotional aspects, they
can make well-informed and
empathetic choices that best serve the
needs of their school community.
Cultivating a Positive Education
Culture
The school culture is shaped by the
values, behaviours, and interactions

within the institution. Emotionally
intelligent leaders actively contribute
to cultivating a positive school culture
where respect, empathy, and
collaboration are valued. A positive
school culture fosters a sense of
belonging and pride among students
and staff, promoting academic success
and personal growth.
The Promising Differentiator
Emotional intelligence is a vital asset
for educational leaders in fostering a
positive learning environment and
driving school improvement. By
building positive relationships,
empowering teachers and staff, and
enhancing communication,
emotionally intelligent leaders create a
supportive and inclusive school
culture. They prioritize student
emotional well-being and model
emotional regulation, cultivating a
growth mindset among students and
staff.
Promoting inclusivity, making
informed decisions, and cultivating a
positive school culture are also
hallmarks of emotionally intelligent
leadership. As the educational
landscape evolves, the importance of
emotional intelligence in educational
leadership becomes increasingly
evident. Emotionally intelligent leaders
have the power to transform
educational institutions into thriving
centers of learning and personal
growth, preparing students for success
in both their academic and personal
lives. As schools continue to prioritize
emotional intelligence in leadership,
they foster an environment that
nurtures not only the minds but also
the hearts of their students and staff.
Aruna Ins lling Hope in Students
for Brighter Future
Have you ever wondered whether people's dreams give
them hope or vice versa?
Well, HOPE and DREAM are interconnected
since one's dreams give them HOPE to work
hard to fulfil their dreams; however, sometimes,
the HOPE of being a successful individual motivates people
dream.
However, merely imagining a successful life is not enough;
for that, one must dedicate oneself to pursuing that dream
fiercely. There could be obstacles that one must overcome
on this road to success, and nobody is really prepared for
every challenge that one may face; but what’s important is
one’s ability to be committed, determined and have a never-
give-up attitude. India, today, has the unique advantage of
having the youngest population in the world and our youth
are talented, skilled and have the inherent quality to think
out-of-the-box. All they need are quality education and
opportunities.
The Hope Foundation and Research Centre (HFRC),
Pune founded by Late Shri Pralhad P Chhabria (Founder
Chairman of Finolex Group) offers opportunities to students
through its two engineering colleges – Finolex Academy of
Management and Technology (FAMT) in Ratnagiri and
2
International Institute of Information Technology (I IT) in
Pune. And heading HFRC as its President is Mrs Aruna M
Katara, daughter of Late Shri Pralhad P Chhabria who has
taken on the mantel of leading the Foundation so as to make
her father’s dream come true and work towards nation
building.
Aruna has dedicated her life to ensuring that bright and
talented students are provided with the chance to get quality
education and opportunities to excel in their chosen career.
Just like her father, Aruna ensures that the colleges in both
– Ratnagiri and Pune, while adhering to all regulatory
norms, provides special consideration for underprivileged
students. She believes that no child should be deprived of
his/her right to quality education and opportunity for lack of
financial resources – an ethos that is followed at FAMT and
2
I IT.
Going a step further, under the aegis of HFRC, Aruna also
established the Pralhad P Chhabria Research Center
(PPCRC) – a tribute to her father who believed that
research and innovation are the keys to India’s rise as a
global power. A focused and dynamic team of researchers at
PPCRC are working on various national and international
projects in diverse fields of engineering and technology
including energy, environment, telecommunication, spatial
data infrastructure, and computation.
What’s interesting is the journey behind the Hope Founda-
tion and Research Centre and Aruna M. Katara.
An Inspiring Tale
The year was 1977; Sonali Chhabria (Aruna’s younger
sister) was diagnosed with Cancer. Despite their best
efforts, the Chhabria family could not find a suitable cancer
treatment centre in Pune or for that matter, in India. They
then decided to take their daughter to Milwaukee in US.
But the lack of medical facilities in our country disturbed
Mr Chhabria; especially considering that not all could
afford to travel abroad. And that is what inspired him to
"Dreams, determination, and dedication are the stepping stones to success. So, dare to dream and have the
courage to pursue that dream relentlessly.”

established Hope Foundation and Research Centre in 1979,
a trust that provides medical assistance and quality
education to the youth of our country. After all, at the core
of every developed society are good medical facilities and
comprehensive education.
Aruna joined the Foundation as a trainee and interned under
her father for years; understanding the operations before she
was officially invited to take over the reins of HFRC. Her
biggest asset she says is ‘being mentored by her father’ who
groomed her over the years. Though she misses his
presence direly, she is proud that his legacy will continue
for years to come through the two colleges and research
institute.
Aruna has over 25 years of hands-on experience in
management, administration, and the family-owned
business; after facilitating the expansion of the family
business, she stepped into dedicating her efforts towards
furthering the reach of the foundation. As the person at the
helm of affairs, she believes that her prime focus is to lead
the Hope Foundation and make it one of the prime social
contributors in nation-building.
While stating her inspiration, Aruna asserts, "It gives me a
sense of fulfilment that I have been in a way instrumental in
providing higher education and industry opportunities to
hundreds of students in India to equip themselves with skill-
sets and knowledge through knowledge assimilation at
Pune and other educational hubs in the U.S., Russia, and
France through I²IT's various academic and research
collaborations with many foreign universities, an interna-
tional exchange of knowledge was also facilitated where
foreign university students were being provided with a
chance to grasp I.T. skills which India is so well known for,
through various courses offered at the institutes."
An Overview of Hope Foundation and Research Centre
In India, there are over 4,000 engineering schools that cater
to 15 lakh students per year. Hope Foundation and Research
Centre have the unique advantage of being ‘THE FIRST’ in
many domains. The first to establish an engineering college
in rural Ratnagiri; which eventually has significantly
changed the social and economic landscape of the region.
The first to launch engineering-driven niche programs in
2001. Among the firsts to have international programs and
dual programs in India. The first to introduce technology-
focused management programs. Together, the two colleges
in Ratnagiri and Pune, the trust can cater to approx. 800
students intake per year; but unlike some institutes, the
primary objective here is to connect, mentor and nurture
students and this can be achieved only when there is
faculty-student personal association. The fruition of this is
the vast network of alumni and families who credit the
colleges, the HFRC and Aruna for the opportunities and
facilities given to them.
Speaking about her personal relationship with past students,
Aruna says, “Meeting our students personally in countries
like Japan, Australia, England, USA and Thailand is truly
overwhelming. Hearing of their success stories and their
fond memories of their college and hostel days is so
fulfilling. As a foundation we may not be catering to lakhs
of students a year; but the thousands we take under our
wings are making significant strides in their careers and
personal lives. I say this on behalf of papa and me that we
couldn’t be prouder of our HFRC family.”
Overcoming Challenges
Challenges are part and parcel of life – personal or profes-
sional. While Mr Pralhad P Chhabria invested a great deal
of his personal wealth in the Foundation, the key is self-
July 2023 24
sustenance and steady endowments. As the President of
HFRC, Aruna Katara’s primary focus lies in generating
funds which can then be used for infrastructural develop-
ments, benefits for students and teams on both campuses.
2
Because of this distinct architecture and infrastructure, I IT
which is located in Hinjawadi (an IT Hub) Pune attracts
many IT Conglomerates to host their events on campus.
The multi advantage of these events is that; while it brings
in funds to the Foundation, it also helps in strengthening the
brand and also gives the students opportunities to interact
with professionals’ first-hand.
Spearheading the fund-raising campaigns, Aruna reaches
out to her wide network of professional and personal
contacts as well as alumni, encouraging them to help further
the Foundation and its vision. It’s tough to raise money in
today’s climate; but her unpretentious and sincere personal-
ity helps Aruna connect with her benefactors and well-
wishers who more often than not are always ready to help
the Foundation in any way they can.
While it is a norm in the academic community that during
annual admissions, colleges charge very high fees for
management quota seats; Hope Foundation and Research
2
Centre ensures that its management seats at FAMT and I IT
are allocated to deserving candidates with preference to
girls and direct dependents of defence personnel and
farmers. Aruna insists, “Come whatever challenges our
way, we have never charged a single penny beyond the
stipulated fees. Our management quota seats are allocated
to deserving students at the same fees as any other student
who joins through the CAP rounds. Our focus has been and
will always be attracting talented students.”
"Leaders Often Seek Help”
When asked about how she manages in the complex world
of academia, Aruna asserts, “I would like to quote President
Barack Obama here - he said, don’t be afraid to ask
questions, or ask for help when you need it. Asking for help
isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you
have the courage to admit when you don’t know something
and are open to learning something new - I am not an
expert in all fields and I have my limitations. But after
being mentored by my father for years, I have learnt that
success depends on the team and I am fortunate to have an
excellent team on both campuses. I often reach out to my
team members for help and that is the advice that I often
give my students. I tell them to seek out faculty members
with domain expertise and pester them with questions, and
develop an eagerness to learn. I am sure that the team
members are good individuals who appreciate the enor-
mous responsibility in shaping the future generation and
would be more than happy to mentor and guide students.”
There is an unwritten rule among faculty members and staff
working in Ratnagiri and Pune campuses – ‘Students First.’
Instilled during their orientation, every team member knows
that their priority will always be students and their well-
being. This quintessential ethos is reflected in the fact that
younger siblings and relatives of students and alumni
2
choose FAMT & I IT over other colleges.
Words of Wisdom
Unlike many seasoned professionals, Aruna isn’t eager to
hand over advices to the youth; especially career and
professional advices. She believes that the present and
forthcoming generations are way smarter than more capable
than those born in the last century. According to Aruna, they
know what they want, and they are determined. However,
she does offer her perspectives about life. Here are Aruna’s
5 thoughts on life.
• Be flexible; accept change and its ok to go with the
flow until you can find your waves to ride.
• There’s always Plan B and Plan C….. Until Plan Z.
Don’t be despondent if plan A doesn’t work. It’s nice to
have a dream; but it’s equally ok to change that dream.
The only thing that matter is having the courage to
continue and never give up.
• Be compassionate, understanding and inclusive with
others. Winning or succeeding is always a team effort.
• Be open to learning something new in life – be it a
skill, an art form, a sport or travelling.
• Don’t give up because something did not work out
today. Come back tomorrow with a fresh mind and
more determination.
Foundation of a Legacy
What began as a personal quest by Mr Chhabria, to help the
community with medical assistance and education has
grown into a strong Foundation with Aruna Katara’s
dedication and commitment. This legacy is now poised to
raise to greater heights as her daughter Amrita Katara takes
over the responsibility as Managing Trustee of the Hope
Foundation and Research Centre. Overseeing the opera-
tions of HFRC, Amrita is focused on strengthening the
brand and widening its network by bringing on board like-
minded and enthusiastic individuals. One could say, “The
legacy will live on.”

Right Subject Combinations

Futuristic Goals
I
th
t is usually seen in children of Grade 10 pick-up
stream based on peer pressure, parent pressure or then
suggested by teachers or family and friends. For
example, if parents are doctors, the child is made to believe
that he/she is born to be a doctor. If you are born into a
family of scholars, then what else than engineering?
Frankly speaking, Engineering, Medical, CA, IT and Law
are a few common professions that society counts on as
secured future goals. But there is lots more than this.
First of all, a child and his parents need to understand the
th
streams available after 10 and what subjects are catered
under each stream. They need to understand the child's
strengths, likes, aspirational goals and desirable careers. It
is very important to understand what a child wants to do in
life and what he/she expects from their life. Based on these
a career choice needs to be made then which is the stream
that is more appropriate because the subject combination
you get in the stream should be beneficial for you to make a
concrete base. The subjects help you to make a base for
entrance preparations, too, and the knowledge you get in
those subjects helps you to clarify the concepts in a much
better way.
Let's take the example of two students X and Y, who aspire
to be CA, X took the science stream of PCM Physics,
th
Chemistry, and Maths in 11 , as he was not aware of the
other streams and subjects offered under those streams
because he had always heard people around him say that it
th
is safest to take science stream after 10 . According to his
knowledge, he could choose any profession and switch to
any options after science, but he never thought of the base
that commerce subjects could give him for CA, as to
become a CA he needed to opt for Commerce with Maths
as that makes his preparations easy. On the other hand, his
friend Y who also aspired to be CA opted for Commerce
th
with Maths after 10 as he had been to a counsellor for the
session and done his groundwork like what was required to
th
be a CA. Both start their journey and complete their 12
with good scores. Now it's time for them to start
preparations for CA Foundation at the first level. X faced
lots of problems as it was all new for him as he was not
from a Commerce background, but on the other hand, Y
th
found it easy to cop up as he had the basics cleared in 11
th
and 12 . It is at this given point of time when X realized
th,
that he had made the wrong choice of subjects after 10 and
that's why he was facing problems to cope with.

Well, to conclude, we need to create awareness among the
children and parents about how important it is to choose the
right subjects and right stream for the career they aspire to
pursue. And to do so, we would have to first make them
understand the importance of meeting a counsellor and the
relevance of taking a counselling session as that could work
as an eye opener for them and help them to wider their
scope. It will give new dimensions to their thinking process
and assist them to narrow their choices and focus on the

THE KNOWLEDGE REVIEW
THE KNOWLEDGE REVIEW
The belief that any change starts
at home is rooted in the
understanding that the family
unit is the foundational building block
of society.
The family is the primary social
environment in which individuals
grow, learn, and develop. It is within
the family that values, attitudes, and
behaviours are initially formed.
Children observe and absorb the
actions and attitudes of their parents
and siblings, which greatly shape their
own perspectives and behaviours. As a
result, the home environment plays a
significant role in shaping individuals'
values and beliefs.
Fostering noble values at home is
crucial for the moral and ethical
development of children. Parents have
a significant role in shaping their
children's character and guiding them
towards integrity, empathy, and
responsibility. Parents can foster noble
values by being role models. Children
learn by observing their parents'
behaviour, so it's important to consis-
tently demonstrate honesty, kindness,
respect, and compassion in our own
actions and words.
Kinnari Shah, Head of School at D Y
Patil International School, Worli, a
prominent name in the education
industry, was influenced by the lively
environment at her home since
childhood.
Growing Up in a Socially Productive
Environment
Kinnari was born and brought up in
India and has studied in the conven-
tional education system. The progres-
sive mindset of her parents and siblings
encouraged Kinnari to read literature
and explore the world beyond text-
books. Both her parents have remained
educators and persuaded all the kids at
home to be socially productive and
engage in intellectual activities.
The environment at her home was
always very stimulating, and her
parents would often discuss the history
and international politics and econom-
ics with Kinnari and her siblings. This
got them naturally inquisitive towards
what was happening beyond their usual
realm, and they explored the world
from various perspectives.
After completing graduation, Kinnari
pursued a Diploma in Computers
Management, which was followed by
the Masters programme. While she was
still studying, her teacher encouraged
her to take up a teaching assignment at
Mumbai University. According to her,
Kinnari’s first teaching job was
satisfying, and this encouraged her to
make a career in the education sector.
Expanding Indian Educational
Landscape
As a student, Kinnari experienced that
the national curricula have some
limitations in terms of assessments and
for students with varying learning
needs. Also, it was not very flexible to
accommodate the different learning
interests of the students. Hence, when
she entered the world of international
education, she realised that one could
make the learning journey a joyful
experience for the students.
Kinnari has taught Cambridge and
International Baccalaureate curricula
for close to two decades. She also
works with the IB office as Diploma
Programme Consultant that helps new
schools in getting authorised to offer
IB programmes; she is also an IB
Evaluation Leader, Workshop Leader,
Examiner and Assessment Moderator.

I believe that a
leader should be in a
position to think and
take decisions that
are beneficial to the
larger community.
Significant Strides in the Industry
Engaging herself with young children
remains the most satisfying part of
Kinnari’s job. While she started
teaching international curriculum as a
subject teacher and a homeroom
teacher, her passion towards social
service attracted her to the CAS
programme of IBDP, and thus she
became CAS Coordinator, eventually
over a period of time, she worked as
IBDP Coordinator, Vice Principal and
now since the last few years as Head of
School.
Meeting Standard Educational
Practices
As an IB educator, Kinnari’s learning
has never stopped. Training is an
imperative part of her work life. IB
requires the heads to be updated with
the latest development in the education
sector and the impact of technology on
the teaching and learning process.
She is also appointed by the IB as an
Evaluation Leader to various schools
to study their programme and know if
they are meeting the IB standards and
practices as required. This exercise
itself is a huge learning opportunity for
her as it allows her to interact with
school leaders from across the globe
and studies their school processes.
Ensuring a Safer Learning
Environment
Promoting student voice and choice
and student agency in the school keeps
Kinnari’s students actively engaged in
their learning journey.

She has successfully created a happy
and safe learning environment for the
students at the school, and she
encourages every child to do their best.
At the school, she celebrates not just
the academic but even the non-
academic achievements of students.
Inclusion of Parents in the Learning
Process
It is necessary to build strong partner-
ships with the parents to provide the
right and authentic support for every
child’s learning needs. It is challenging
when the parents do not share the
vision of the school and become grades
driven.
Kinnari interacts formally and
informally with the parents and makes
an attempt to educate them about
keeping the focus on the overall
well-being of the students and not just
determining the success of every child
in terms of grades.
Enhancing Teaching and Learning
with Technology
D Y Patil International School, Worli,
has heavily invested in various
software and platforms that would
enhance teaching and learning at the
school. The school makes use of
Cubetto from Nursery to introduce
coding programmes to the students.
There are interactive platforms like
Robogarden used for studying robotics.
The school also uses ‘Step and Learn,’
a software that makes the whole floor
interactive and makes every learner an
active participant in the learning
process. For higher grades, too, the
school uses Managebac and Google
Classroom daily.
The school makes
differentiation not only in
the service that is the
assessments but also in the
process- in the daily
teaching and learning in
the classroom.

Empathetic Educational Leader
Kinnari believes that a leader should be
in a position to think and take deci-
sions that are beneficial to the larger
community. Hence, problem-solving
skills and decision-making skills are
essential for a leader to have. She
believes that as an educational leader,
one should also possess strong
communication skills as well as the
ability to empathise with others' social
and emotional needs.
Kinnari Shah does not believe in the
‘one size fits all’ approach. The school
makes differentiation not only in the
service that is the assessments but also
in the process- in the daily teaching
and learning in the classroom. Every
single teacher goes through a series of
training to know how to differentiate
and how to identify the varying needs
of every learner that they take care of.
Striving with the Same Passion in
the Future
Kinnari has been awarded the Best
Leadership Icon Award in the Year
2020 by the then Governor of
Maharashtra. She has received
numerous awards like these for her
work.
Her school is expanding and growing
in strength. It is introducing a new IB
programme for the students of Gr. 11
and 12, an IB Career-related
Programme. Its students of Gr. 10 will
have a choice of three programmes to
study after their Gr. 10 i.e. Cambridge
A Levels, IB Diploma Programme and
IB career-related programme. On an
ongoing basis, the school intends to
monitor the professional development
and mental well-being programme for
all stakeholders.
I have successfully
created a happy and
safe learning
environment for the
students at the school

every child to do
their best.

ffective communication lies at
Ethe heart of successful
educational leadership. As the
guiding force of educational
institutions, leaders must communicate
clearly, openly, and empathetically
with students, teachers, parents, and
other stakeholders. A well-structured
communication strategy not only
fosters transparency but also builds
trust and strengthens relationships
within the school community. Let us
explore the importance of effective
communication in educational
leadership and provide practical
strategies for educational leaders to
enhance their communication skills.
Effective communication is the

active listening can mediate
conflicts and find mutually
agreeable solutions.
Ÿ Motivation: Inspiring and
motivational communication can
drive positive change and boost the
morale of teachers, students, and

and mission can inspire everyone to
work towards common goals.
Ÿ Parent Engagement: Strong
communication with parents is
essential for creating a positive
school-parent partnership. When
parents are well-informed and
engaged, they become valuable
allies in their children's education.
Developing Effective
Communication Strategies
Now that we understand the
importance of effective
communication, let's explore some
strategies that educational leaders can
adopt to improve their communication
skills:
Active Listening
This is a fundamental communication
skill that leaders must master. When
engaging in conversations with
teachers, students, or parents, leaders
should listen attentively, demonstrate
empathy, and avoid interrupting. By
truly understanding the concerns and
perspectives of others, leaders can
respond more effectively and make
informed decisions. Listening carefully
encourages the speaker to speak and
explain in all the details. Listening
patiently is an art that needs to be
developed steadily.
Establishing Clear Channels of
Communication
Educational leaders should establish
clear and accessible channels of
communication for the school
community. This includes regular staff
meetings, parent-teacher conferences,
newsletters, emails, and social media
platforms. By offering multiple
avenues for communication, leaders
ensure that everyone has access to
relevant information and can voice
their thoughts and concerns.
Tailoring Communication to the
Audience
Different stakeholders may have
varying needs and preferences when it
comes to communication. Educational
leaders should tailor their messages to
suit the audience they are addressing.
For instance, communication with
students may require a more relatable
and engaging tone, while
communication with parents may
necessitate a more formal approach.
Embracing Technology
In the digital age, technology plays a
vital role in communication.
Educational leaders should embrace
technology to enhance communication
efficiency. Utilize email, school
websites, social media, and other
digital platforms to share important
updates and engage with the school
community.
Leading by Example
Leaders should exemplify effective
communication in their own
interactions. Demonstrate active
listening, empathy, and respectful
communication with everyone in the
school community. When leaders
model good communication practices,
it sets a positive tone for the entire
institution.
Providing Timely and Relevant
Information
Timeliness is crucial in effective
communication. Leaders should ensure
that important information reaches the
intended recipients in a timely manner.
This includes sharing updates on
school events, changes in policies, and
other relevant matters promptly.
Using Visuals and Multimedia
Incorporating visuals and multimedia
elements in communication can
enhance its impact. Utilize
infographics, videos, and other visual
aids to make information more
engaging and accessible. Visuals can
help convey complex ideas more
effectively and leave a lasting
impression.
Nurturing the Pathway of Excellence
Effective communication is a critical
skill for educational leaders to build
trust, foster collaboration, and create a
positive school environment. By
actively listening, establishing clear
communication channels, and tailoring
messages to the audience, leaders can
enhance their communication
strategies. Embracing technology,
leading by example, and providing
timely and relevant information are
also essential components of effective
communication.
Using visuals and multimedia, regular
check-ins, and addressing difficult
topics with sensitivity contribute to
open and transparent communication.
Finally, celebrating achievements and
milestones reinforces positive
behaviour and motivates the school
community. By continually improving
their communication skills, educational
leaders can create a nurturing and
inclusive learning environment that
promotes student success and staff
satisfaction. Effective communication
is the key to successful educational
leadership, enabling leaders to inspire,
motivate, and empower their school
community.

  • 24. Aruna Ins lling Hope in Students for Brighter Future Have you ever wondered whether people's dreams give them hope or vice versa? Well, HOPE and DREAM are interconnected since one's dreams give them HOPE to work hard to fulfil their dreams; however, sometimes, the HOPE of being a successful individual motivates people dream. However, merely imagining a successful life is not enough; for that, one must dedicate oneself to pursuing that dream fiercely. There could be obstacles that one must overcome on this road to success, and nobody is really prepared for every challenge that one may face; but what’s important is one’s ability to be committed, determined and have a never- give-up attitude. India, today, has the unique advantage of having the youngest population in the world and our youth are talented, skilled and have the inherent quality to think out-of-the-box. All they need are quality education and opportunities. The Hope Foundation and Research Centre (HFRC), Pune founded by Late Shri Pralhad P Chhabria (Founder Chairman of Finolex Group) offers opportunities to students through its two engineering colleges – Finolex Academy of Management and Technology (FAMT) in Ratnagiri and 2 International Institute of Information Technology (I IT) in Pune. And heading HFRC as its President is Mrs Aruna M Katara, daughter of Late Shri Pralhad P Chhabria who has taken on the mantel of leading the Foundation so as to make her father’s dream come true and work towards nation building. Aruna has dedicated her life to ensuring that bright and talented students are provided with the chance to get quality education and opportunities to excel in their chosen career. Just like her father, Aruna ensures that the colleges in both – Ratnagiri and Pune, while adhering to all regulatory norms, provides special consideration for underprivileged students. She believes that no child should be deprived of his/her right to quality education and opportunity for lack of financial resources – an ethos that is followed at FAMT and 2 I IT. Going a step further, under the aegis of HFRC, Aruna also established the Pralhad P Chhabria Research Center (PPCRC) – a tribute to her father who believed that research and innovation are the keys to India’s rise as a global power. A focused and dynamic team of researchers at PPCRC are working on various national and international projects in diverse fields of engineering and technology including energy, environment, telecommunication, spatial data infrastructure, and computation. What’s interesting is the journey behind the Hope Founda- tion and Research Centre and Aruna M. Katara. An Inspiring Tale The year was 1977; Sonali Chhabria (Aruna’s younger sister) was diagnosed with Cancer. Despite their best efforts, the Chhabria family could not find a suitable cancer treatment centre in Pune or for that matter, in India. They then decided to take their daughter to Milwaukee in US. But the lack of medical facilities in our country disturbed Mr Chhabria; especially considering that not all could afford to travel abroad. And that is what inspired him to "Dreams, determination, and dedication are the stepping stones to success. So, dare to dream and have the courage to pursue that dream relentlessly.” July 2023 22

  • 26. established Hope Foundation and Research Centre in 1979, a trust that provides medical assistance and quality education to the youth of our country. After all, at the core of every developed society are good medical facilities and comprehensive education. Aruna joined the Foundation as a trainee and interned under her father for years; understanding the operations before she was officially invited to take over the reins of HFRC. Her biggest asset she says is ‘being mentored by her father’ who groomed her over the years. Though she misses his presence direly, she is proud that his legacy will continue for years to come through the two colleges and research institute. Aruna has over 25 years of hands-on experience in management, administration, and the family-owned business; after facilitating the expansion of the family business, she stepped into dedicating her efforts towards furthering the reach of the foundation. As the person at the helm of affairs, she believes that her prime focus is to lead the Hope Foundation and make it one of the prime social contributors in nation-building. While stating her inspiration, Aruna asserts, "It gives me a sense of fulfilment that I have been in a way instrumental in providing higher education and industry opportunities to hundreds of students in India to equip themselves with skill- sets and knowledge through knowledge assimilation at Pune and other educational hubs in the U.S., Russia, and France through I²IT's various academic and research collaborations with many foreign universities, an interna- tional exchange of knowledge was also facilitated where foreign university students were being provided with a chance to grasp I.T. skills which India is so well known for, through various courses offered at the institutes." An Overview of Hope Foundation and Research Centre In India, there are over 4,000 engineering schools that cater to 15 lakh students per year. Hope Foundation and Research Centre have the unique advantage of being ‘THE FIRST’ in many domains. The first to establish an engineering college in rural Ratnagiri; which eventually has significantly changed the social and economic landscape of the region. The first to launch engineering-driven niche programs in 2001. Among the firsts to have international programs and dual programs in India. The first to introduce technology- focused management programs. Together, the two colleges in Ratnagiri and Pune, the trust can cater to approx. 800 students intake per year; but unlike some institutes, the primary objective here is to connect, mentor and nurture students and this can be achieved only when there is faculty-student personal association. The fruition of this is the vast network of alumni and families who credit the colleges, the HFRC and Aruna for the opportunities and facilities given to them. Speaking about her personal relationship with past students, Aruna says, “Meeting our students personally in countries like Japan, Australia, England, USA and Thailand is truly overwhelming. Hearing of their success stories and their fond memories of their college and hostel days is so fulfilling. As a foundation we may not be catering to lakhs of students a year; but the thousands we take under our wings are making significant strides in their careers and personal lives. I say this on behalf of papa and me that we couldn’t be prouder of our HFRC family.” Overcoming Challenges Challenges are part and parcel of life – personal or profes- sional. As the President of HFRC, Aruna Katara’s primary focus lies in generating funds which can then be used for infrastructural develop- ments, benefits for students and teams on both campuses. 2 Because of this distinct architecture and infrastructure, I IT which is located in Hinjawadi (an IT Hub) Pune attracts many IT Conglomerates to host their events on campus. The multi advantage of these events is that; while it brings in funds to the Foundation, it also helps in strengthening the brand and also gives the students opportunities to interact with professionals’ first-hand. Spearheading the fund-raising campaigns, Aruna reaches out to her wide network of professional and personal contacts as well as alumni, encouraging them to help further the Foundation and its vision. It’s tough to raise money in today’s climate; but her unpretentious and sincere personal- ity helps Aruna connect with her benefactors and well- wishers who more often than not are always ready to help the Foundation in any way they can. While it is a norm in the academic community that during annual admissions, colleges charge very high fees for management quota seats; Hope Foundation and Research 2 Centre ensures that its management seats at FAMT and I IT are allocated to deserving candidates with preference to girls and direct dependents of defence personnel and farmers. Aruna insists, “Come whatever challenges our way, we have never charged a single penny beyond the stipulated fees. Our management quota seats are allocated to deserving students at the same fees as any other student who joins through the CAP rounds. Our focus has been and will always be attracting talented students.” "Leaders Often Seek Help” When asked about how she manages in the complex world of academia, Aruna asserts, “I would like to quote President Barack Obama here - he said, don’t be afraid to ask questions, or ask for help when you need it. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something and are open to learning something new - I am not an expert in all fields and I have my limitations. But after being mentored by my father for years, I have learnt that success depends on the team and I am fortunate to have an excellent team on both campuses. I often reach out to my team members for help and that is the advice that I often give my students. I tell them to seek out faculty members with domain expertise and pester them with questions, and develop an eagerness to learn. I am sure that the team members are good individuals who appreciate the enor- mous responsibility in shaping the future generation and would be more than happy to mentor and guide students.” There is an unwritten rule among faculty members and staff working in Ratnagiri and Pune campuses – ‘Students First.’ Instilled during their orientation, every team member knows that their priority will always be students and their well- being. This quintessential ethos is reflected in the fact that younger siblings and relatives of students and alumni 2 choose FAMT & I IT over other colleges. Words of Wisdom Unlike many seasoned professionals, Aruna isn’t eager to hand over advices to the youth; especially career and professional advices. She believes that the present and forthcoming generations are way smarter than more capable than those born in the last century. According to Aruna, they know what they want, and they are determined. However, she does offer her perspectives about life. Here are Aruna’s 5 thoughts on life. • Be flexible; accept change and its ok to go with the flow until you can find your waves to ride. • There’s always Plan B and Plan C….. Until Plan Z. Don’t be despondent if plan A doesn’t work. It’s nice to have a dream; but it’s equally ok to change that dream. The only thing that matter is having the courage to continue and never give up. • Be compassionate, understanding and inclusive with others. Winning or succeeding is always a team effort. • Be open to learning something new in life – be it a skill, an art form, a sport or travelling. • Don’t give up because something did not work out today. Come back tomorrow with a fresh mind and more determination. Foundation of a Legacy What began as a personal quest by Mr Chhabria, to help the community with medical assistance and education has grown into a strong Foundation with Aruna Katara’s dedication and commitment. This legacy is now poised to raise to greater heights as her daughter Amrita Katara takes over the responsibility as Managing Trustee of the Hope Foundation and Research Centre. Overseeing the opera- tions of HFRC, Amrita is focused on strengthening the brand and widening its network by bringing on board like- minded and enthusiastic individuals. One could say, “The legacy will live on.” www.theknowledgereview.com 25
  • 28. Right Subject Combinations Compliment Best Fit Futuristic Goals I th t is usually seen in children of Grade 10 pick-up stream based on peer pressure, parent pressure or then suggested by teachers or family and friends. For example, if parents are doctors, the child is made to believe that he/she is born to be a doctor. If you are born into a family of scholars, then what else than engineering? Frankly speaking, Engineering, Medical, CA, IT and Law are a few common professions that society counts on as secured future goals. But there is lots more than this. First of all, a child and his parents need to understand the th streams available after 10 and what subjects are catered under each stream. They need to understand the child's strengths, likes, aspirational goals and desirable careers. It is very important to understand what a child wants to do in life and what he/she expects from their life. Based on these a career choice needs to be made then which is the stream that is more appropriate because the subject combination you get in the stream should be beneficial for you to make a concrete base. The subjects help you to make a base for entrance preparations, too, and the knowledge you get in those subjects helps you to clarify the concepts in a much better way. Let's take the example of two students X and Y, who aspire to be CA, X took the science stream of PCM Physics, th Chemistry, and Maths in 11 , as he was not aware of the other streams and subjects offered under those streams because he had always heard people around him say that it th is safest to take science stream after 10 . According to his knowledge, he could choose any profession and switch to any options after science, but he never thought of the base that commerce subjects could give him for CA, as to become a CA he needed to opt for Commerce with Maths as that makes his preparations easy. On the other hand, his friend Y who also aspired to be CA opted for Commerce th with Maths after 10 as he had been to a counsellor for the session and done his groundwork like what was required to th be a CA. Both start their journey and complete their 12 with good scores. Now it's time for them to start preparations for CA Foundation at the first level. X faced lots of problems as it was all new for him as he was not from a Commerce background, but on the other hand, Y th found it easy to cop up as he had the basics cleared in 11 th and 12 . It is at this given point of time when X realized th, that he had made the wrong choice of subjects after 10 and that's why he was facing problems to cope with.

She has been conducting teacher training programs and webinars on various topics. Well, to conclude, we need to create awareness among the children and parents about how important it is to choose the right subjects and right stream for the career they aspire to pursue. And to do so, we would have to first make them understand the importance of meeting a counsellor and the relevance of taking a counselling session as that could work as an eye opener for them and help them to wider their scope. It will give new dimensions to their thinking process and assist them to narrow their choices and focus on the filtered ones. Catalysing Success

  • 32. The belief that any change starts at home is rooted in the understanding that the family unit is the foundational building block of society. The family is the primary social environment in which individuals grow, learn, and develop. It is within the family that values, attitudes, and behaviours are initially formed. Children observe and absorb the actions and attitudes of their parents and siblings, which greatly shape their own perspectives and behaviours. As a result, the home environment plays a significant role in shaping individuals' values and beliefs. Fostering noble values at home is crucial for the moral and ethical development of children. Parents have a significant role in shaping their children's character and guiding them towards integrity, empathy, and responsibility. Parents can foster noble values by being role models. Children learn by observing their parents' behaviour, so it's important to consis- tently demonstrate honesty, kindness, respect, and compassion in our own actions and words. Kinnari Shah, Head of School at D Y Patil International School, Worli, a prominent name in the education industry, was influenced by the lively environment at her home since childhood. Growing Up in a Socially Productive Environment Kinnari was born and brought up in India and has studied in the conven- tional education system. The progres- sive mindset of her parents and siblings encouraged Kinnari to read literature and explore the world beyond text- books. Both her parents have remained educators and persuaded all the kids at home to be socially productive and engage in intellectual activities. The environment at her home was always very stimulating, and her parents would often discuss the history and international politics and econom- ics with Kinnari and her siblings. This got them naturally inquisitive towards what was happening beyond their usual realm, and they explored the world from various perspectives. After completing graduation, Kinnari pursued a Diploma in Computers Management, which was followed by the Masters programme. While she was still studying, her teacher encouraged her to take up a teaching assignment at Mumbai University. According to her, Kinnari’s first teaching job was satisfying, and this encouraged her to make a career in the education sector. Expanding Indian Educational Landscape As a student, Kinnari experienced that the national curricula have some limitations in terms of assessments and for students with varying learning needs. Also, it was not very flexible to accommodate the different learning interests of the students. Hence, when she entered the world of international education, she realised that one could make the learning journey a joyful experience for the students. Kinnari has taught Cambridge and International Baccalaureate curricula for close to two decades. She also works with the IB office as Diploma Programme Consultant that helps new schools in getting authorised to offer IB programmes; she is also an IB Evaluation Leader, Workshop Leader, Examiner and Assessment Moderator. Significant Strides in the Industry Engaging herself with young children remains the most satisfying part of Kinnari’s job. While she started teaching international curriculum as a subject teacher and a homeroom teacher, her passion towards social service attracted her to the CAS programme of IBDP, and thus she became CAS Coordinator, eventually over a period of time, she worked as IBDP Coordinator, Vice Principal and now since the last few years as Head of School. Meeting Standard Educational Practices As an IB educator, Kinnari’s learning has never stopped. Training is an imperative part of her work life. IB requires the heads to be updated with the latest development in the education sector and the impact of technology on the teaching and learning process. She is also appointed by the IB as an Evaluation Leader to various schools to study their programme and know if they are meeting the IB standards and practices as required. This exercise itself is a huge learning opportunity for her as it allows her to interact with school leaders from across the globe and studies their school processes. Ensuring a Safer Learning Environment Promoting student voice and choice and student agency in the school keeps Kinnari’s students actively engaged in their learning journey. At the school, she celebrates not just the academic but even the non- academic achievements of students. Inclusion of Parents in the Learning Process It is necessary to build strong partner- ships with the parents to provide the right and authentic support for every child’s learning needs. It is challenging when the parents do not share the vision of the school and become grades driven. Kinnari interacts formally and informally with the parents and makes an attempt to educate them about keeping the focus on the overall well-being of the students and not just determining the success of every child in terms of grades. Enhancing Teaching and Learning with Technology D Y Patil International School, Worli, has heavily invested in various software and platforms that would enhance teaching and learning at the school. The school makes use of Cubetto from Nursery to introduce coding programmes to the students. There are interactive platforms like Robogarden used for studying robotics. The school also uses ‘Step and Learn,’ a software that makes the whole floor interactive and makes every learner an active participant in the learning process. For higher grades, too, the school uses Managebac and Google Classroom daily. The school makes differentiation not only in the service that is the assessments but also in the process- in the daily teaching and learning in the classroom. July 2023 32

Hence, problem-solving skills and decision-making skills are essential for a leader to have. She believes that as an educational leader, one should also possess strong communication skills as well as the ability to empathise with others' social and emotional needs. Kinnari Shah does not believe in the ‘one size fits all’ approach. The school makes differentiation not only in the service that is the assessments but also in the process- in the daily teaching and learning in the classroom. Every single teacher goes through a series of training to know how to differentiate and how to identify the varying needs of every learner that they take care of. Striving with the Same Passion in the Future Kinnari has been awarded the Best Leadership Icon Award in the Year 2020 by the then Governor of Maharashtra. She has received numerous awards like these for her work. Her school is expanding and growing in strength. It is introducing a new IB programme for the students of Gr. 11 and 12, an IB Career-related Programme. Its students of Gr. 10 will have a choice of three programmes to study after their Gr. 10 i.e. Cambridge A Levels, IB Diploma Programme and IB career-related programme. On an ongoing basis, the school intends to monitor the professional development and mental well-being programme for all stakeholders. I have successfully created a happy and safe learning environment for the students at the school and I encourage every child to do their best. www.theknowledgereview.com 33
