I
th
ndia was ranked 67 amongst the
developing countries in terms of
doctor patient ratio till a decade ago
when it was well below the WHO
prescribed ratio 1 doctor per 1000
population. According to the latest data
provided by National Medical Commission
(NMC), India now has a doctor patient ratio
of 1:854. There are 183 government and
215 private institutions from where students
are training to become doctors all over the
country. To provide a career opportunity in
healthcare to wards of soldiers of our
country some of whom may have lost their
lives in service or others who are serving in
remote area and have been staying away
from families for years together, Army
College of Medical Sciences was
established.
It is a step to bridge the gap and to produce
Indian medical graduates who are
competent, compassionate and globally
relevant. Placed in the Cantonment area of
the capital, the college is the brainchild of
the Army Welfare Education Society,
enhancing medical education to the wards
of Army personnel.
In our venture for the edition, 'Best
Medical Institutes in India Admiring
Healthcare, 2023,' we came across Major
General Surender Mohan, Vishisht Seva
Medal (VSM) the Dean of the College,
who has taken the college to new heights
and training the aspirants in such a way that
is world class and in sync with the latest
developments in the world of healthcare.
While having a long discussion with The
Knowledge Review, Maj Gen Surender
Mohan shared his overall experiences, aim
and inception story.
Story of its Inception
Army Welfare Education Society (AWES)

faculty from renowned medical institutes
from all over the country. They guide the
students to remain updated with the latest
trends as the healthcare sector is
continuously evolving. The college is
affiliated with Guru Govind Singh
Indraprastha University, New Delhi and is
also recognised by the Medical Council of
India - MCI (now National Medical

labs, the college has two student
canteens and eight play grounds. The
hostel accommodation for students is
well equipped with a gym, other sports
facilities, music and fine arts room,
yoga and meditation rooms for holistic
development of the budding doctors.
The success story of the college is
narrated by the great personality of
Maj Gen Surender Mohan, a great
achiever and highlights his overall
career journey and experiences.
An Eminent Versatile Scholar
Apart from being a renowned
Gynaecologist, Major General
Surender Mohan is recipient of the
prestigious Vishisht Seva Medal
(VSM), awarded to him in the year
2015. He has vast experience in the
clinical and surgical management of
patients in the entire spectrum of
Obstetrics and Gynecology, including
Advanced Laparoscopic surgery.
Moreover, he has commanded the 500
bedded Military Hospital in Dehradun
and also served as Deputy
Commandant at Army Medical Corps
Centre and College Lucknow.
After training
generations of doctors
over three decades of
his meritorious service
in the forces he now
currently serves as the
Dean of ACMS. He has
taken over the task
with a vision of
transforming
infrastructure, facilities
and education for the
young minds at this
college.
He has also taken
multiple initiatives/
projects to create an
environment for the all-around growth
of the students and faculty
development.
Maj Gen Surender Mohan is also an
eminent scholar with various public-
ations in national and international
journals of repute to his credit.
Dream of the College
To achieve a common dream, a group
of people work together. Similarly,
ACMS has a set vision, mission and
core values, and this code of ethics
bring prestige to the college.
Maj Gen Surender Mohan has
shared the list of value statements
with us that says,
Ÿ "To establish, nurture and
sustain an environment for
conducive learning, seeking
and imparting knowledge,
conducting research and
cultivating curiosity of mind in
students and faculty members.
Ÿ To build an ethos of compassionate,
empathetic care and concern
among students and faculty
members for patients and their
relatives.
Ÿ To build an enduring edifice of
character and empathy among
students and faculty members.
Ÿ To prepare young medical students
for a glorious, prestigious, noble
career with special knowledge of
Armed Forces requirements and
inculcate in them the spirit to serve
the nation and balance it in equal
measure by skills of hand and
heart."
All these set objectives lead the
success in college, but the question
comes across what courses ACMS
provides and their outcomes. To get the
answer read ahead!
Reflection of the Course
All medical students of the college are
expected to demonstrate proficiency in
medical knowledge, critical thinking
and inquiry, patient care,
professionalism, interpersonal and
communicational skills and
organisational and social determination
of health care.

22. For this, the college works to establish,
nurture, and sustain an environment for
learning and imparting knowledge,
allowing the students to conduct
research, publish papers and prepare
them for a noble career along with
expertise and discipline.
ACMS is already renowned for
providing medical education to
enhance and polish the students' skills;
the college has also introduced various
unique programs for their holistic
development to serve the country's
general community at frontline and in
Armed Forces.
Eccentric Programs- Probing
Surgical and Common Skills
ACMS introduced the skill laboratory
to provide a safe and non-threatening
environment for students who are
learning, practising, and performing
their skills in a simulated environment.
The college's skill lab recreates the
clinical atmosphere where students can
practice and polish their skills.
In the current scenario, medical
education is adopting competency-
based and more clinical-oriented
education; in which students get
clinical exposure from their first year.
These practices and exposure help the
students to promote health and prevent
disease in population.
Enabling Health and Preventing the
Disease
The students of the college are
motivated to participate in workshops,
seminars, and inter-college academic
competitions, and as per NMC
guidelines ACMS too has started the
'Family Adoption Programme'; under
this program, a cluster of students
st
starting from 1 year has been allotted
a group of families with whom they
will interact and solve their issues
related to health and wellbeing.
The students also get an opportunity to
study the various aspects of health and
diseases, which are the family's
influencing factors. The students
follow the family on a yearly basis
from their first year to their internship
period.
With regards to promoting health and
preventing diseases, Maj Gen Surender
Mohan asserts, "This develops a
trustworthy and long-lasting
relationship with the families which
will facilitate health-seeking behaviour
and promote the health and prevent
diseases. The students are trained in
developing communication and social
skills."
Motivating and Nurturing Medical
Aspirants
Nurturing creativity and inspiring
innovation are two key elements of
successful education. Merely storing
up the mind with facts and data is not
enough. ACMS motivates that
whatever the student has learned must
be sharpened with mental acumen to
deliver according to the needs of the
community.
The learning
methods and
assessments should
encompass all levels of
Bloom's taxonomy.
““
July 2023 20
23. While stating about their approaches to
keep students and themselves
motivated, Maj Gen Surender Mohan
postulates, "We motivate children in
conducting research with the guidance
of their teachers to publish articles.
The college publishes its own official
Journaland students are encouraged to
submit research with us or with other
indexed journals."
"Students are motivated to take part in
various academic-related activities like
quizzes and symposiums organised by
the various medical associations all
over the country," he further adds.
After sharing a few motivational tips
for the student's bright future, Maj Gen
Surender Mohan also shared important
advice for future medical aspirants.
Catalysing Future Aspirants
Teaching different specialities of
medicine is an entirely different form
of medical practice. Medical faculty
need to be aware of teaching principles
and techniques along with the faculty
development programmes within and
outside the institution.
The principles of andragogy should
guide medical educators towards
experiential learning, which enhances
learner autonomy and makes them
responsible for their own learning.
There is a need for alignment of
desired learning outcomes, activities
and assessments for effective learning.
However, Maj Gen Surender Mohan,
while sharing his advice for future
aspirants, he mentions, "The learning
methods and assessments should
encompass all levels of Bloom's
taxonomy. It is important to emphasise
skills in affective domains. The art of
conducting peer learning activities
needs to be learnt through hands-on
workshops. Classical teaching needs to
be modified to Technology-enhanced
blended learning."
With the important piece of advice for
future medical aspirants, Dean Maj
Gen Surender Mohan also enlightens
us with the college's most notable
achievements.
Catalogue of Accomplishments
ACMS students have excelled in
university exams when compared with
other medical colleges of GGSIP (Guru
Gobind Singh Indraprastha) University,
despite the fact that the ACMS
student's NEET merit was
comparatively low.
In India Today's Survey 2022, ACMS
scored fifth in the top ten Private
Medical Colleges with the lowest fee
structure.
ACMS again scored fifth in the top ten
emerging colleges, and it is the highest
scoring college among those
established in or after 2000.
The college also ranked twenty-fourth
in India's top fifty-three public and
private medical colleges.
All these college achievements will
ensure a bright future for the medical
aspirants, and to retain and achieve
more success, Maj Gen Surender
Mohan envisions few strategies and
approaches ahead.
Future Holding Envision
While imparting knowledge, ACMS
has achieved many awards and
recognitions, which led the college to
the top level and brought more
accomplishments. Maj Gen Surender
Mohan has enlightened us with the
future vision of the college and shares,
"We impart knowledge & prepare our
youth to cope with the current state of
the world. Therefore, the current
challenge is not to acquire knowledge,
it is more about acquiring Social Skills
to help our children overcome the
abundant alienation and mistrust we
encounter. The major objectives are: -
Ÿ Promoting the success of collective
knowledge.
Ÿ Helping students build their self-
awareness.
Ÿ Emphasis on: -
GT (Small Group Teaching) with
increased teacher-student
interaction.
AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and
Communication Module).
Extracurricular activities.
Electives help them to identify
their area of interest.
Ÿ Encouraging students to get out of

solutions that cater to the needs of all
sections of society.
Through research and innovation, these
institutes are developing generic
medications, medical devices, and
diagnostic tools that are more
affordable without compromising on
quality. Additionally, collaborations
with pharmaceutical companies and
government initiatives are driving
down the costs of essential
medications, making them more
accessible to the masses.
Multidisciplinary Healthcare
Indian medical institutes are adopting a
multidisciplinary approach to
healthcare, recognizing that medical
issues often require a comprehensive
understanding of various disciplines.

practices.
Enhanced Medical Education
Medical education is a critical aspect
of nurturing the next generation of
healthcare professionals. Indian
medical institutes are continually
updating and improving their
curriculum to align with the latest
medical advancements and global
standards.
Simulation labs and virtual training are
being incorporated into medical
education to enhance practical skills
and prepare students for real-life
medical scenarios. Moreover, medical
institutes are emphasizing ethics,
empathy, and patient-centric care to
instil a holistic approach to medicine in
their students.
Strengthening Primary Healthcare
Medical institutes in India are also
making significant efforts to strengthen
primary healthcare services. This
involves collaborating with
government agencies and non-
governmental organizations to expand
healthcare access to remote and
marginalized communities.
Community health programs,
preventive care initiatives, and health
awareness campaigns are being
implemented to tackle prevalent health
issues, such as maternal and child
health, communicable diseases, and
malnutrition. By prioritizing primary
healthcare, these institutes are
empowering communities to lead
healthier lives and reducing the burden
on tertiary healthcare facilities.

Preventive Healthcare
A new form of preventive healthcare is
gaining prominence in India as medical
institutes shift their focus from solely
treating diseases to promoting
preventive measures. Emphasizing
vaccination programs, health
screenings, lifestyle counselling, and
wellness initiatives, these institutes aim
to reduce the burden of preventable
diseases and improve overall public
health.
Indian medical institutes are playing a
pivotal role in redefining healthcare in
the country and beyond. Through
advancements in medical research, the
adoption of innovative technologies,
strengthening primary healthcare, and
prioritizing preventive measures, these
institutions are positively impacting the
well-being of millions of individuals.
Moreover, the focus on medical
education, interdisciplinary
collaboration, and global partnerships
is fostering a culture of continuous
improvement and knowledge sharing
in the field of medicine.
As India continues to address its
healthcare challenges, the efforts of
these medical institutes are
instrumental in shaping a more
inclusive, accessible, and efficient
healthcare system that caters to the
diverse needs of its population. With
their dedication to innovation and
commitment to patient-centric care,
Indian medical institutes are poised to

40. Entrance Examination Preparations
The journey of medical students in
India often begins during their high
school years when they decide to
pursue a career in medicine. The first
major milestone in this journey is
preparing for the highly competitive
medical entrance examinations. The
two primary entrance tests for medical
colleges in India are the All India Pre-
Medical Test (AIPMT), now known as
the National Eligibility cum Entrance
Test (NEET), and various state-level
entrance exams.
Pursuing the Bachelor of Medicine
and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
Degree
Once successful in the entrance
examinations, students embark on their
MBBS journey, which spans five and a
half years. The MBBS program
includes four and a half years of
academic training, followed by a one-
year compulsory rotating internship.
During the academic phase, students
delve into various medical subjects,
including anatomy, physiology,
biochemistry, pathology,
pharmacology, microbiology, and
more. Practical learning is a significant
component, with dissection classes,
laboratory sessions, and clinical
demonstrations forming an essential
part of the curriculum.
Medical students also gain early
exposure to patient care through
regular visits to hospitals and medical
centers. This hands-on experience
allows them to witness the practical
application of their theoretical
knowledge and instills a sense of
responsibility and empathy toward
patients.
Facing Challenges and Long Study
Hours
The journey of medical students in
India is a challenging feat, and they
professionals but also compassionate
caregivers.
Embracing Lifelong Learning
The journey of medical students in
India continues after the completion of
their formal education. In the medical
profession, continuous learning is
essential to keep up with advancements
in medical science, technology, and
best practices.
Medical professionals undertake
professional development programs,
attend medical conferences, and
engage in research to stay updated with
the latest developments in their fields.
Lifelong learning is a hallmark of the
medical profession and a commitment
to delivering the highest standard of
care to patients.
Transforming Medical Education
The journey of medical students in
India is a transformative and arduous
process that shapes them into skilled,
compassionate, and dedicated
healthcare providers. From the
challenges of competitive entrance
examinations to the hands-on clinical
training and continuous learning,
medical students are equipped with the
knowledge and skills needed to serve
their communities and contribute to the
field of medicine.
The journey is a testament to their
commitment to the betterment of
society and the significant role they
play in promoting health and well-
being. As they embark on their medical
careers, these young medical
professionals carry with them the
values of compassion, empathy, and a
relentless pursuit of excellence that
defines the noble profession of
medicine.
face numerous challenges throughout
their academic pursuits. The vast and
complex curriculum demands long
study hours and extensive preparation
for examinations.
Medical students must develop
effective time management skills to
balance their studies with clinical
postings, practical sessions, and
extracurricular activities. The pressure
to excel academically and meet high
expectations can be mentally and
emotionally taxing, necessitating
resilience and perseverance.
Clinical Postings and Rotating
Internship
As the academic phase nears
completion, medical students enter
their rotating internship, a critical
period in their journey. The internship
exposes them to various medical
specialties, such as surgery, medicine,
gynaecology, paediatrics, and more.
Under the guidance of experienced
doctors, interns participate in patient
care, perform medical procedures, and
gain valuable clinical experience. The
internship also serves as a transition
from a student to a healthcare provider,
allowing interns to apply their
knowledge in real-life scenarios.
Developing Compassion and
Empathy
As medical students progress through
their journey, they cultivate essential
qualities such as compassion, empathy,
and resilience. The daily interactions
with patients and witnessing their
struggles and pain deepen the student's
understanding of the human condition.
Medical training instils a sense of
responsibility toward patients' well-
being and motivates students to
provide the best possible care. The
experiences during their journey shape
them into not only skilled medical

Aoriginated in ancient India, thousands of years ago.
The importance of Ayurveda education and its rich
history cannot be overstated, as it has had a profound
impact on healthcare and holistic well-being.
Ayurveda education plays a significant role in preserving
and promoting cultural heritage. The history of Ayurveda
stretches back thousands of years and has been passed
down through generations. Studying Ayurveda not only
allows individuals to tap into this ancient wisdom but also
helps in preserving the traditional knowledge and practices
associated with it. By understanding the historical context
of Ayurveda, including its philosophy, diagnostic methods,
and treatment modalities, students gain a deeper
appreciation for its relevance and continue to carry the
torch of this ancient tradition.
Ayurveda education also contributes to the overall
development of healthcare systems worldwide. While
modern medicine excels in acute care and emergency
situations, it often needs to improve in addressing chronic
illnesses and promoting preventive health. Ayurveda, with
its holistic approach, fills this gap by focusing on
individualized treatment plans, disease prevention, and
health promotion. Integrating Ayurveda into mainstream
healthcare systems requires well-trained professionals who
understand its principles and practices. By educating
individuals in Ayurveda, we create a pool of knowledgeable
practitioners who can collaborate with conventional
medical professionals, enhancing patient care and providing
a more comprehensive approach to health.
In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in
Ayurveda globally, with people seeking natural and holistic
alternatives to conventional medicine. As a result, Ayurveda
education has gained significance and as a means to meet
this growing demand, institutes like Tapovana Ayurveda
Medical College and Hospital came into existence.
The Inception Story
Tapovana Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital were
founded by Dr Shashikumar. V. Meherwade under SRI
SHAKTHI ASSOCIATION ®, located on five-acres of land
at Doddabathi, Davanagere district; initially, the hospital
started in the year 2000 with seven OPDs and 60 bedded
hospital with a dispensary and therapy section for male and
female separately. With a vision to provide the opportunity
for students to get the ideal medical education in the year
2015, Tapovana Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital
came into existence. The college started in a new building
on the same campus. First-year classes started with well-
trained staff, Digital Library, Physiology Lab, Dissection

including the Pathology Lab, Forensic Museum, Pharmacy,
Digital X-ray, Minor and Major OT, and Labour Room.
Since the beginning, the college has been running with its
full admission and good result, with many distinctions from
every batch.
Its first and second batch students took the oath to serve the
society on Feb 4th 2023. The first convocation was held in
the presence of the Honorable Governor of Karnataka Shri
Thawar Chand Gehlot.
Currently, the hospital is serving those in need, treating all
kinds of lifestyle disorders and non-communicable diseases
successfully.
Today the institution stands tall as a prestigious institute in
the central part of Karnataka.
Honing Better Professionals
The vision and mission of the college are to nurture the
skills of punctuality, humbleness and problem-solving. The
college facilitates a caring, effective and resourceful
learning environment on campus, which enables the
students to utilise advanced technology as an effective
means of communication to make their careers more
successful.
The core values of the college are:
Ÿ Move up through initiatives to achieve global
excellence.
Ÿ To achieve 'Health for All' through preventive and
curative measures.
