12. The principal plays a vital role
in ensuring a school runs
smoothly and provides high-
quality education to its students. They
oversee all higher-level operations and
set performance goals for both students
and instructors. Additionally, they must
create a safe and nurturing learning
environment that fosters academic and
personal growth, ensuring that the
school has the necessary resources and
infrastructure to support student
learning.
The principal's responsibilities also
include setting performance goals for
students and teachers, ensuring they
are measurable, achievable, and
aligned with the school's mission and
values. Once goals are set, the
principal monitors the process to
ensure they are met, working closely
with teachers and staff to identify areas
of improvement and provide the
necessary support.
Dr C Ananda Vayaravel is one such
distinguished educationist and
healthcare professional dedicated to
serving the community through his
work in education and healthcare. His
passion for education and commitment
to lifelong learning began early in life
as an alumnus of Petit Seminaire
Higher Secondary School, known for
its academic excellence and holistic
approach to education.
Dr Vayaravel pursued higher education
in medical laboratory technology and
medical biochemistry from the
prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of
Postgraduate Medical Education and
Research (JIPMER), earning his
doctoral degree in Medical
Biochemistry from Puducherry Central
University and an MBA in Hospital
Administration from Tamil Nadu State
University.
Despite his impressive academic
achievements, Dr Vayaravel believes in
the importance of lifelong learning and
is pursuing a diploma in Anesthesia
and a master's degree in health
professional education. He inspires
generations of students and healthcare
professionals to strive for excellence
and make a positive impact in the
world through his dedication to
education and healthcare.
Devotion of Lifetime
Through his innovative teaching
methods and tools, he has devoted the
past 23 years of his professional career
to educating students of Health Care
(Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy)
and other Allied Health Science
disciplines. Alongside his primary role
as an educator, he has also contributed
to the field of research, particularly
interdisciplinary research, with more
than 40 publications to date. He has
performed multiple roles, serving as an
Editor, Editorial Board Member, and
Peer Reviewer for a number of reputed
national and international journals.
He has been serving as a Professor and
The Principal of Sri Venkateshwaraa
College of Paramedical Sciences,
Ariyur, Puducherry, in a leadership role
over the past five years.
Highlighting the Significance of
Quality Education
Dr C Ananda Vayaravel firmly believes
that investment in knowledge always
multiplies infinitely. Providing
education is akin to teaching someone
to fish, a source of lifelong sustenance,
rather than providing a one-time fish
meal. He ventured into the field of
education purely by accident but
learned its significance in due course,
which has helped shape his approach to
the teaching-learning process.
Being an educator for over two
decades has made him realize the
enormity of a good teacher's impact on
society. His beloved Professor, Dr
Sundaresan, Retd. Head, Department
of Biochemistry, JIPMER, has been his
role model who always taught him how
to break down the core concepts of a
complicated subject so as to make it
comprehensive and interesting from
the point of view of a student.
Creating a Healthier Society
Sri Venkateshwaraa College of
Paramedical Sciences, a sister concern
of Sri Venkateshwaraa Group of
Institutions, was established in the year
2010 and currently offers BPT, MPT,
MLT, MRIT, and diploma courses in
Radiology, Cardiology & Dialysis.

Inspiring Principals of the Year - 2023
13. Developing skilled Technologists and
other allied healthcare professionals
who are vital to "Creating a Healthier
Society" is at the core of its vision. Its
mission is to foster an inclusive and
conducive environment by providing
quality education, hands-on training,
and professional guidance that would
translate into the best learning
experience for all students.
Rags to Riches
The institution caters to the needs of
low-income and middle-income
students who have secured mostly 50
per cent in their higher secondary
examinations. So, it has adopted a
student-centric teaching method,
focusing on what the students need to
learn through small group teachings
and student seminar sessions.
It strongly encourages them to
participate in academic events and
competitions conducted in other
institutions. A lot of emphases are
placed on their hands-on training and
acquisition of technical skills during
the various laboratory postings that
will help them develop into skilled
technologists.
Personalized Learning
Dr C Ananda says that at the
elementary and middle school level, in-
person face-to-face teaching' needs to
be the primary mode of teaching,
barring unusual circumstances like the
recent pandemic, while the more
mature students at the high school level
could be taught infrequently using
online and modern methods.
Virtual and in-person modes of
teaching could be given equal
importance for undergraduate students,
while the online and modern ways of
teaching could take centre stage for the

students. In-person sessions could still
be held for these students as and when
warranted. Heutagogy or self-
determined learning needs to be
encouraged among post-graduate
students and beyond.
Resilience in Unprecedented Times
The recent pandemic has thrown
normal life into chaos, and the
education sector was not spared either.
Students forced to stay home had
ample free time, which went unutilized
for self-improvement. At this critical
juncture, Dr C Ananda Vayaravel was
able to motivate and help more than 50
students (including students from other
institutions as well) to author chapters
on their subject of interest and get
them published for which he was
recognized and awarded a 'Certificate
of Empowerment' by SCIENCE (ISBN
978-81-949421-9-1).
He persisted with similar efforts even
after the worst of the pandemic had
passed, this time compiling and
publishing the works of the faculty and
students of my group of institutions
into two books: Recent Advances in
Health Sciences (ISBN: 978-81-
955557-3-4) and Recent Advances in
Health Sciences II (ISBN:978-93-
94766-29-7), for which he served as
Editor-in-Chief.
He was able to revise and update the
curriculum on par with the other
premier institutes during the board of
studies conducted in 2020.
Keeping the Ancient Culture Alive
“Annadanam Mahadanam,
Vidyadhanam Sarva Dhanam
Pradhanam.”
Sri Venkateshwaraa College hails from
an ancient culture that places the
teacher even above God. However, it
needs to be emphasized that the
education sector does not compensate
handsomely. Therefore, youngsters
entering this industry need to do so
with a basic understanding of the self-
sacrifice and compromise involved in
this profession. Dr C Ananda is
reminded of the famous dialogue
between Lord Shiva and the poor poet
Dharumi in the blockbuster Tamil
movie ‘Thiruvilaiyadal,’ which states
that poverty and intellect always co-
exist and the notion of a wealthy
intellectual is but an illusion.
He believes that the immense self-
satisfaction that one derives from
helping guide the thought process of
young minds, nudging them towards
behaving responsibly as good citizens
and watching all the hard work come
to fruition when the students go on to
revolutionize and mould this world
into a better place is compensation
enough for a civic-minded educator.
Therefore, Dr C Ananda advises
anyone entering the education sector to
come in with enriching, extraordinary
ideas and open arms without prejudices
but tempered with reasonable
expectations of personal gain.
Empowering and educating the
students, bringing out their
individuality, and helping them attain
their fullest potential, thereby

and his institute’s long-term ambition.
In the Race with Time
Dr C Ananda emphasizes that
technology has turned out to be a boon
for several sectors, including
education. The advent of technology
has expanded access to education. It
has leveraged the opportunity for
communication and collaboration,
thereby breaking the walls of the
classrooms that were acting as barriers
for a longer time. It also has brought a
paradigm shift from sage on the stage
to guide by the side where the students
are encouraged to self-directed
learning.
The emergence of Educational
Technology (EdTech) has brought
flexibility in modes and times of
learning among students. The various
Learning Management Systems (LMS)
have given 24x7 availability and
accessibility to learning materials.
Also, EdTech has improved
personalized learning, aiding teachers
with automated grading, paperless
classrooms, and data-driven insights.
He describes that virtual learning
environments, video, augmented
reality (AR), robots, and other
technological tools can not only make
lessons more interesting but also more
inclusive learning environments that
encourage collaboration and
inquisitiveness, as well as give teachers
the ability to collect information on
student performance.

THE KNOWLEDGE REVIEW
18. chool leadership was
Sconspicuously lacking from the
majority of prime agendas for
school reformation ten years ago, and
even those who believed it was crucial to
turning around failing schools indicated
ambivalence about how to begin.
How much change a decade can
introduce?
Modern school reform initiatives include
strengthening school leadership at the top
of the list. Principal leadership was
named as one of the most critical
concerns in public school education in a
thorough study conducted in 2010 by
school and district administrators,
lawmakers, and others. Aside from
dropout rates, STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and math)
education, student testing, and
preparedness for college and careers,
teacher quality was the most important
factor, followed by principal leadership.
Moreover, traditionally, the principal was
thought to be a middle manager, in charge
of the school's buses, boilers, and books,
as suggested in William Whyte's 1950
novel The Organization Man. Today, in a
rapidly evolving era of standards-based
reform and accountability, a new
conception has emerged that is more in

Collins' 2001 book Good to Great,
which draws lessons from modern
corporate life to recommend leadership
that focuses with extreme clarity on
what is crucial, what needs to be done,
and how to get it done.
Principals' responsibilities under this
new system will change dramatically.
They can no longer simply act as
building managers who are responsible
for following district requirements,
carrying them out, and avoiding
mistakes. They must be (or develop
into) pedagogical leaders of learning
who can build an educational team and
offer impactful education.
In a similar vein, Genesis Global

A Journey of an Inspiring Principal
Madhur was certain and wanted to

cultures, educational demands, and
practical constraints. Despite having
enormous potential, some regions, like
as the extreme North-east and Srinagar,
had to limit their efforts to meeting the
most fundamental educational
demands.
Madhur's desire to stay in the
classroom grew greater, and she was
constantly searching for opportunities
that would help her develop.
Her horizons were expanded later in
her professional career when she
started teaching biology for the
National Board, IGCSE, and IB
curricula. She strengthened her
pedagogical approach to teaching
scientific topics by fusing various
curricula.
A Vision Statement
Madhur's emphasized on the vision
which is, hard work and open
mindedness led her to climb the ladder
of success.
Being in charge of the national
curriculum as a principal was made
possible by holding a variety of
portfolios, including vice principal,
co-ordination of middle school,
timetable, science department, and
examinations.
The voyage would not have been
possible if she did not have her parents
as her role models, who still serve as
an inspiration to her today. Madhur
grew up watching her father working
hard and mother as a dedicated
mathematics teacher. Doing things
passionately with dedication, integrity
and honesty are some of the values
imbibed from her parents as role
models.
After accumulating experience at
numerous schools, Genesis Global
well as careers is well embedded at
every stage as a part of curriculum.
Priority is to achieve excellence in
competencies like critical thinking to
solving problems collaboratively
thereby preparing them for future
unseen challenges."
Overcoming the Challenges
A few of the significant issues facing
the education sector are highlighted
below. Since there is an abundance of
information, it is crucial to transform it
into the appropriate knowledge. Our
future generation's access to the digital
world is causing them to become more
isolated and confined to their own
environment, which can cause tension,
worry, and occasionally sadness. Lack
of social skills could be a significant
obstacle that could have a significant
impact on creating a peaceful society.
The basic philosophy of embracing
change calls for constant reform of
pedagogies to include online learning
and contemporary teaching methods.
This is done as a component of the
teachers' professional development.
Continuous learning and unlearning are
given more importance in order to keep
up with the pace of the needs of the
next generation.
A teacher's ability to establish a
relationship with the kids and act as
more of a facilitator is vital since it can
work wonders in developing them into
responsible citizens for a sustainable
future.
While stating challenges, she says, "I
feel proud in expressing my initiatives
in terms of introducing wider options
including skill-based subjects from
middle school onwards to bring
awareness of future options. Priority to
hundred per cent participation in
varied activities to hone the skills of
our young learners has been my motto.
Strong integrated multidisciplinary
School actually takes on the role of her
primary residence. Being a founding
member of the organisation, it is very
dear to her heart. The school takes
pride in offering a top-notch
infrastructure and resources, as well as
an equipped and knowledgeable
faculty, to help it accomplish its
purpose.
Nurturing Holistic Approach
The school's objective is to produce
resilient, whole-person, empathetic,
and life-long learners. Students who
graduate from here become
responsible, global citizens with the
ability to make a positive contribution
to society.
Every part of Genesis is infused with
the democratic ethos, which results in a
stress-free environment with lots of
chances for experiential learning and
personal development. One of the
guiding principles is to embrace
change. The days of applying the 'one
size fits all' principle are long gone. To
ensure effective learning, various
needs, modes, and techniques are
regularly modified and put into
practise.
Achieving Excellence Curricula
In order to provide quality education,
the school promotes holistic
development by offering a wide range
of subject alternatives, including skill-
based subjects as well as a variety of
chances in extracurricular activities
and sports. This exposes them to
enough people for them to discover
their inner talents and develop their
abilities in all areas of life.
While stating about the advanced
curricula of the school, Madhur says,
"We make sure that each Genesian
participates in activities related to
their interest and gain confidence in
expressing their talents. Counselling
and guidance for emotional support as

identifying the subjects in isolation,
and that is what NEP aims for, a real
connect to real life."
Another approach has been providing
teachers with frequent, demanding
professional development. This has
prepared them well for the difficulties
they would confront in the classroom
and make them wonderful resources
for disseminating and sharing their
knowledge with the wider society.
Madhur was motivated to implement
the Innovative Cell Program, a recent
Ministry of Education initiative,
starting this school year in the middle
school. Her young students now enjoy
and are engaged in their learning.
Envision the Future
While stating the future vision of the
school Madhur says, "I have always
craved for new learning and that does
make me step out of my comfort zone.
In past years, I have authored Science
books for the middle school and
Biology for Grade 10 under private
publication. Endless workshops as a
participant have enriched me in all
respect. I have been part of many
Conclaves and Conferences as a
Panellist and Speaker. Though in
administrative role, but the passion for
my subject makes me continue as
Examiner in Biology for IBDP.
Excellent result of my students in
Board Examination conveys a lot about
my dedication to work with the
students for which I was appreciated
and felicitated by the School
Management."
"Stepping in the field of education
should always be by choice, as one
deals in shaping the future citizens. I
don’t know what lies ahead for me, but
I’m very clear with my vision, learning
never ends, I aim to continue as a
lifelong learner and offer my service
for the nation by imparting my
expertise and experience in the
education world," Madhur Gupta
concluded.

DAS
Inspiring Principals of the Year, 2023
The parents are the children’s first teachers; they
impart to them life lessons and teach them about
positive and negative things. However, in addition
to parents, teachers in schools and universities play a
significant role in a child’s development.
Teachers are the torchbearers in children’s lives because
they consistently direct them in the right direction, aid them
in determining their ideal vocation, and then give them
accurate guidance in compliance.
As much as people like to claim that education is the key to
success, it is teachers who exert a lasting influence on
students’ lives. In a similar vein, Mrs Kavita Das, the
Principal at St. John's High School, has been molding
pupils’ lives and ensuring that they succeed in life and
evolve into responsible, devoted citizens who respect God’s
blessings for the societal benefit.
She has dedicated her life to teaching and molding the lives
and careers of students because she always believed that
teaching is a vocation. She is the fourth generation in her
family to become a teacher, and her mother and
grandmother have inspired her to work with children and
transform their lives.

I am a FOURTH-generation teacher, so as they say,
teaching is 'in my blood!' My role models were my mother

apart? The answer lies in the school
motto, "Pro Deo et Patria" – For God and
Country.
From the start, our children are taught about God being the
center of it all. They are also encouraged to be dedicated,
patriotic citizens who deal with compassion and kindness,
especially with the marginalized of this world. They
recognize that every human being is uniquely and
wonderfully made and worthy of respect. In turn, they also
value their individuality and carry themselves confidently
and elan!
What measures have been taken to enhance the student
learning experience in your school?
The school was not surprised when the NEP was released to
discover that we fully complied with the principles and
specifications of this prestigious document when a
compliance evaluation was conducted. Textbooks are
frequently put on hold until the subject has been covered
while our children are taught through activity-based
programs!
Textbooks are only then examined in order to enhance
learning. Research, questioning, exploration, projects,
discussion, and debate are encouraged to teach students
how to think critically and avoid accepting information at
face value. Field trips are frequent, co-curricular activities
are plentiful, and athletics are well-liked. Most essential, a

In terms of course objectives and learning
outcomes, what does your school prioritize?
Learning by doing! The approach is Multi-
intelligence and Learning Style based. Creativity
and originality are keywords when it comes to
teaching.
What are the significant challenges that the
education sector in India faces today? What
initiatives/programs have you launched to overcome
it?
Inclusion and overwhelming numbers are significant
challenges. We deal with the latter by strictly adhering to a
fixed number per class so that classes do not become
unmanageable.
Regarding inclusion, we are very proud that every
unique child is identified and catered to by Grade 2,
thanks to the intensive training given to the staff
that allows them to identify these children quickly.
By engaging every class in an annual, ongoing
programme called Community Outreach, we also
seek to develop compassion. Through interactions
with people who are cognitively, physically, or
audibly challenged, seniors, children with
thalassemia, lepers, members of the transgender
community, and many more, our youngsters
develop empathy and compassion. Thus,
inclusion develops into a way of life. The KGs
and Class Ones adopt zoo animals as they start
their path toward compassion by realizing that
they protect the environment and everything in
it.
We also have more than 300 EWS children
fully integrated into the school, with a strong
program to ensure they gain from their
education. In this context, we have a unique
program called the 'Foster Parent' program in
which each teacher is a foster parent to 3
children and is responsible for their physical,
mental, emotional, and academic welfare. We also
have Adult Education classes for their parents. This
program has paid rich dividends, with our EWS

Accountants, Doctors, Pilots,
Businessmen, etc.!
Academics are 'given' in our
school, with every child doing
very well.
What are the effective changes you have incorporated in
the school curriculum for the overall development of the
students?
As stated earlier, we have made the entire curriculum
activity-based and embedded it with values, the UN
Sustainable Development Goals, Co-operative Learning,
and inter-disciplinary planning. The syllabus is modified for
the Special kids, and we have four counsellors and two
special educators who work with the students to ensure
their stability and learning. Community Service is also
inbuilt.
What advice can you give those who want to step into
the education field?
Teaching is a vocation and NOT a profession. You must be
willing to invest yourself in your kids and school to be an
effective teacher. Keep abreast of changes and work with
creativity, integrity, a deep and abiding faith, and
compassion. Most of all, love your students and deal with
them fairly.
Please share what lies ahead for you and your school in
the near future.
I will be stepping down at the end of this academic session
as I have reached the age of retirement! I have always
believed that God opens doors and allows one to serve, so I
look forward to seeing where He will lead me!

A Blooming Bud
Ms Varduhi began her career as a
teacher very young when she was still
in school and a student of herself.
Being a third culture kid (TCK) needed
her to go through a variety of learning
experiences that were radically
different from one another: from the
very strict and traditional, teacher-
centered schooling that was the only
form acceptable in those days in
Armenia (the country she was from) to
a very student-centered and child need
focused education that was already the
main teaching approach in England,
where she spent part of her school
years. It was a logical decision to
pursue a career in teaching because she
had to negotiate such stark disparities
and deal with their full effects on her
academic and personal development.
She began a new journey for the
educational system in the country
when she moved to Armenia in the
middle of the 2000s. While working

and practises of the IB curriculum as
an approach to educating the growing
generation, as a way to change the
future of the world, and to ensure that
students receive an internationally
recognized diploma that opens many
doors abroad that were previously
closed.
She has had the fortune of witnessing
the true transformation in the
educational landscape for more than 17
years, as well as how the schooling
system affects children's development
and the changes it is actually bringing
about to the world.
As an IB teacher, coordinator, and
eventually head of the continuum
programmes at various schools, she
was exposed to a variety of
experiences, including those as an IB
examiner, counsellor, consultant,
workshop leader, and evaluator, among
others. With the variety of perspectives
that these chances have provided her,
she can safely say that she will
continue to learn new things
every day of her life. Ms

people have to work
extremely hard to keep the

Crucial Moments

special and crucial moments in her
journey she mentions, “When in grade

the road I could never change later. It
was then that I realised that NO
change I wish to see is possible to
happen unless I get very actively
involved with the educational system
and have it as the tool to bring the
desired changes to the world.”
Continuing her statement, she says,
“After school graduation there was no
need of a career choice, it was already
with me – becoming an educator,
nowhere else could I see myself, thus
all my higher education was just for
the same. As a lifelong learner though

Envisaging the Future
When we ask Ms Varduhi about her
future vision, she asserts, “Having this
belief and vision we see GGS becoming

academic success only. We believe

Overcoming the Challenges
The world is changing every second,
absurd circumstances are becoming
real, and everyone needs to be
adaptable to survive. The most recent
experience that individuals have had
was with COVID-19 which became the
new reality. Dr Varduhi cannot even
imagine that what would occur if the
educational system is not adaptable

express themselves and learn without fear of discrimination
or harassment. By prioritizing the well-being and emotional
development of students, creative principals create a
foundation for academic success.

of technology in enhancing learning experiences. They
leverage technology tools and resources to engage students,
promote collaboration, and personalize instruction. These
leaders invest in infrastructure, provide professional
development on educational technology, and encourage
innovative uses of digital tools in the classroom. By

school community. These leaders promote a culture of
curiosity, encourage reading initiatives, organize
enrichment programs, and celebrate intellectual
achievements. By instilling a passion for lifelong learning,
creative principals equip students with the skills and
mindset needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
