Teducation, and development
have become entwined in
modern emerging societies that are
seeking to become social welfare states
and are attempting to better the socio-
economic situation of the public by
peaceful means. The same is true in
India.
Considering this need, some institutes
in India have come forward to provide
better legal education and enhance the
legal literacy of the country in
demanding times.
School of Law, Presidency
University, is on a mission to create
ideal legal professionals. The institute
started its journey in the year 2015, and
since then, it has grown into an
institution catering to three Honours
programs with seven specialisations.
right below the logo of Presidency
University as a constant reminder and
acknowledgement of the never-ending
endeavour to seek and expand one's
horizon. The School of Law is
dedicated to the art of teaching and
research; and creating a conducive
environment where students, faculties,
and researchers can thrive, brainstorm,
create and make breakthroughs.
Innovation and inclusivity are two
more significant pillars of law school.
Moreover, today, it has become non-
negotiable for a law school to bridge
the gap between theory and practice in
the field of law. Whatever is taught in
closed classrooms means little if they
don't translate into enhancing the skills
of students and preparing them for the
practical world.
In the last few years, the university has
been able to make its mark felt in
various moot court competitions, and
its students are employed in various
corporate entities and start-ups and are
contributing to the advocacy filed
through litigation as well.
Keeping the Nobility Intact
Teaching is an art, an art to make
students the most authentic versions of
themselves. That is perhaps why it is
known as the noblest of the
professions. Presidency University's
School of Law is first and foremost
focused on honing, enhancing, and
elevating this very art to greater
heights.
The phrase 'Gain more knowledge,
reach greater heights' finds a place
13. An interdisciplinary approach towards
law is another aspect the school
focuses on because the law cannot be
studied, understood, or practised in a
vacuum. So, in short, the mission of
the school is to help students
constantly enhance themselves; and its
vision is to contribute to the field of
law substantially.
Here, it would be fit to quote Lt. Nani
Palkhivala, one the greatest jurists to
have walked this planet, "Education is
at the heart of the matter. Literacy is
not enough. It is good to have a
population which is able to read, but
infinitely better to have people able to
distinguish what is worth reading."

With this objective, the Integrated

Advocacy Skills, and Drafting Skills.
All such skills are refined through
Moot Courts, Legal Aid Clinics and
Internships that are conducted in
compliance with the requirements of
the Bar Council of India.
Constant Pursuit of Innovation
The law school has a bigger mission to
be achieved in the coming years. The
missions include:
• Commit to being an innovative
and inclusive institution by
seeking excellence in teaching,
research, and knowledge transfer.
• Pursue research and development
and its dissemination to the
community at large.
• Create, sustain, and apply learning
in an interdisciplinary
environment with consideration
for ethical, ecological and
economic aspects of nation-
building.
• Provide knowledge-based
technological support and services
to the industry in its growth and
development.
• To impart globally applicable skill
sets to students through flexible
course offerings and support the
industry's requirements and
inculcate a spirit of new venture
creation.

driven global University, excelling
beyond peers and creating
professionals of integrity and character

the Law School Dean: Leader,
Manager, Energizer, Envoy,

cited. There are various subtler roles as
well that a dean has to play. But the
most underrated role from the above
five is that of an 'Energizer.'
The school consciously attempts to
ensure a constant atmosphere of
'learning' and 'seeking' is ever-present.
For this, the administration, faculties,
and students need to endeavour hand in
hand. But a dean needs to ensure that
all the stakeholders in a law school find
the motivation to do so, to constantly
grow, think and evolve as
academicians and learners.
Emphasising Multi-disciplinary
Research
The quality of legal education has
changed as a result of the integrated 5-
year bachelor's degree programme in
law. It was designed with the intention
of bringing legal education to the level
of a complete professional degree and
giving recently graduated 10+2
students the chance to choose a career
right away.

critical aspect of the learning process is

professional.

14. Bridging Gaps: Theory and Practical
It hardly needs to be said how social sciences and law are
interdependent. In order to ensure that graduates are
qualified and skilled to meet the variety of opportunities in
the legal profession, management sciences, economics, and
commerce must be integrated with legal education, given
the rapidly expanding Indian economy and worldwide
commercial footprint.
It is important to reiterate the importance of bridging the
gap between theory and practical aspects of the law. For
this, the law school engage the students in negotiation-
mediation, client counselling, moot, and debate
competitions in the classrooms as a part of the course
curriculum. Making it a part of the curriculum ensures that
students gradually develop the required skill sets to thrive
in the field of law.
Multi-dimensional Study of Law
The school has also consciously adopted the
interdisciplinary approach towards the study of law. For
example, 'Law and Literature' is a course that is not given
the due significance it requires in most law schools in India.
The school ensures that such courses are enshrined into its
programme structure meticulously in order to prevent the
one-dimensional study of law.

knowledge of the law along with theoretical and walking

ensure all-round development of 'to-be lawyers.' Many law
schools attempt to adhere to the above aspects, but the
vigour with which it is done is different. This law school's
vigour to not compromise with this is what makes it stand
apart from the crowd.
The school conducts various internal and inter-university
events throughout the semester to ensure students get
maximum exposure and a variety of experiences. Secondly,
making certain competitions a part of the curriculum itself
creates the required impact. For example, the school would
rather have a Public Interest Litigation drafting competition
in a Constitutional Law course rather than simple class
presentations.
Innovative Pedagogies

the school focuses on. Practical learning includes

more.
Student engagement, all-around
development, conceptual clarity, and
practical understanding form the
epicentre of imparting knowledge at
the School of Law. Its goal is to make
the students' 'THINK.' The goal of the
art of teaching is to make the students'
think and not just understand or learn
information thrown at them. Many fail
to realise the importance of this non-
negotiable approach.
Giving Global Outlook
Internationalisation of all courses in all
programmes taught in the school is an
important aspect of its approach. The
school ensures that comparative studies
or a global outlook approach towards
any subject form a significant part of
the course outcomes and the entire
curriculum in general.
The most important job teachers or law
school can do is to develop the ability
to think and question. To engrave into
their brains that the best way to live
and develop a career is to be aware of
your own ignorance. Career
development happens consciously and
not hypnotically if these values are
imparted to the students.
Law School as Lifelong Companion
The law school also has a career
development cell that works to ensure
that students are given the guidance
that they require at every step of their
law school journey. Career
development seminars, personalised
sessions, and expert talks are regularly
organised to aid students in enhancing
their understanding of the dynamic
field of career development in the law.
The three-pronged focus of the law
school for now is:
• To enhance diversity and
inclusivity among students and
faculty members.
• To enhance the interdisciplinary
nature of education imparted.
• To further develop an intense
research atmosphere.
Just like Roscoe Pound said, "The law
must be stable, but it must not stand
still." Similarly, the growth
environment at a law school ought to
be stable but should not be stagnant.
The school needs to evolve constantly
as per the requirements of time and the
dynamism of the legal industry.

THE KNOWLEDGE REVIEW
23. Legal education is experiencing a rapid
and dynamic transformation in response
to the evolving demands of the legal
profession. With a firm commitment to
innovation, law schools globally are
wholeheartedly embracing emerging trends that
seek to empower aspiring lawyers with the
essential skills, knowledge, and adaptability
needed to thrive in the complex and ever-
changing legal landscape of the 21st century.
The traditional methods of legal instruction,
once confined to lecture-based formats and
textbooks, are now being reimagined and
revitalized to align with the needs of today's
legal practitioners. The shift towards innovation
in legal education is driven by a collective
recognition that the legal profession is
undergoing profound changes due to
technological advancements, shifting societal
expectations, and emerging legal challenges. As
a result, law schools are proactively reshaping

competencies necessary to navigate this new reality
successfully.
In the pursuit of this goal, one of the foremost trends in
legal education is the integration of technology into the
curriculum. Law schools understand the indispensable role
that technology plays in the modern legal landscape, with
artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics
revolutionizing legal practice. Consequently, courses on
legal technology, coding, and data analysis have become
integral components of legal education, enabling students to
develop proficiency in these areas. By equipping aspiring
lawyers with technological literacy, law schools ensure that
graduates possess a competitive edge, enabling them to
deliver efficient, innovative, and effective legal solutions to
their clients.
Moreover, law schools are embracing the concept of
interdisciplinary studies as a means of broadening the
horizons of legal education. Recognizing that law is deeply
intertwined with various social, economic, and political
systems; legal institutions are fostering collaborations with
disciplines beyond the law itself.
Integrating Technology for Future Lawyers
In this era of technological advancements, law schools are
recognizing the crucial role that technology plays in the
legal profession. As a result, one of the prominent trends in
legal education is the integration of technology and digital
tools into the curriculum. Courses on legal technology,
coding, and data analysis are becoming commonplace to
prepare students for a technology-driven legal environment.
By embracing these tools, aspiring lawyers gain a
competitive edge, enhance their efficiency, and provide
better solutions for their clients.
Broadening Horizons
Law is no longer viewed as a solitary field but as an
interconnected part of a complex web of social, economic,
and political systems. Law schools are responding to this
reality by embracing interdisciplinary studies. Collaborating
with other disciplines such as business, technology,
psychology, and ethics, law schools provide students with a
comprehensive education. By exploring the intersections
between law and other areas, students develop a broader
perspective, critical thinking skills, and a deeper
understanding of the implications of legal decisions.
Experiential Learning
The traditional lecture-based approach to legal education is
gradually giving way to experiential learning. Law schools
now place greater emphasis on hands-on, practical
experiences. Clinical programs, internships, and externships
are being incorporated into the curriculum to allow students
to apply their legal knowledge in real-world settings. This
approach enhances students' practical skills and nurtures a
deeper understanding of the ethical, professional, and social
responsibilities associated with the legal profession.
Global Perspective
With the globalization of the legal industry, law schools are
focusing on international and comparative law programs.
As businesses and legal issues transcend borders, lawyers
must possess a global perspective and cross-cultural
competencies. Many law schools offer opportunities for
students to study abroad, engage in international moot court
competitions, and participate in global legal research. These
programs expose students to different legal systems,
cultural norms, and diverse perspectives, preparing them to
navigate the complexities of an interconnected world.
Lifelong Learning
Recognizing that the legal profession is constantly
evolving, law schools are placing a growing emphasis on
professional development and lifelong learning. Courses on
leadership, communication, negotiation, and legal ethics are
integrated into the curriculum to cultivate essential skills for
a successful legal career. Additionally, continuing legal
education programs are becoming more accessible,
allowing legal professionals to stay up to date with new
developments, refine their skills, and adapt to changing
legal landscapes throughout their careers.
In conclusion, legal education is undergoing a
transformative shift to meet the demands of an ever-
changing legal profession. Emerging trends in legal
education, such as integrating technology, embracing
interdisciplinary studies, fostering experiential learning,
embracing a global perspective, and nurturing lifelong
learning, are equipping aspiring lawyers with the tools,
knowledge, and adaptability needed to navigate the
complexities of the modern legal landscape successfully. As
the legal profession continues to evolve, legal education
must continue to evolve with it, ensuring the next
generation of lawyers is prepared to address the challenges
and seize the opportunities.

30. n order to create a society that is truly just and inclusive,
Iit is of utmost importance to confront the educational
disparities prevalent in law institutes. Achieving equal
representation within legal education is a fundamental aspect
that promotes diversity, equality, and fairness in the legal
profession as a whole.
By ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have
access to quality legal education, we can foster a more
inclusive environment that embraces different perspectives
and experiences. This, in turn, enhances the overall quality of
legal education and contributes to a more equitable and
representative legal system for everyone involved.
Understanding the Educational Disparities
Educational disparities at law institutes refer to unequal
access to quality legal education and opportunities among
individuals from diverse backgrounds. These disparities can
arise from various factors such as socioeconomic status, race,
ethnicity, gender, and geographical location. Such disparities
hinder the ability of aspiring legal professionals to access the
necessary resources, mentorship, and support required for
success in the field of law.
The Importance of Equal Representation
Equal representation within law institutes plays a vital role in
creating a legal profession that reflects the diversity of

opportunity to pursue a legal education, it helps dismantle
systemic barriers and promotes social justice. By embracing
diversity, law institutes foster a more inclusive
environment, encourage different perspectives, and enhance
the overall quality of legal education.
Addressing Socioeconomic Disparities
Socioeconomic disparities significantly impact access to
legal education. To minimize these disparities, law institutes
can implement various initiatives. Scholarships and
financial aid programs can be established to support
students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally,
mentoring programs and career counselling services can
help students navigate the challenges they may face due to
financial limitations.
Promoting Racial and Ethnic Diversity
Racial and ethnic diversity is a crucial aspect of equal
representation in law institutes. Instituting targeted
recruitment strategies that actively seek out students from
underrepresented communities can help increase diversity.
Additionally, creating safe spaces for discussions on racial
and ethnic issues within the legal curriculum can promote a
more inclusive learning environment.
Encouraging Gender Equality
Gender disparities persist in the legal profession, making it
essential to address these imbalances at the educational
level. Law institutes can establish gender-focused
initiatives, such as mentorship programs and networking
events, to support female students in pursuing legal careers.
Promoting gender equality within the curriculum can also
help foster a more inclusive educational experience.
Bridging the Geographical Gap
Geographical disparities can limit access to quality legal
education, particularly for students in rural or remote areas.
To bridge this gap, law institutes can explore distance
learning options, online courses, and virtual classrooms.
Collaboration with local institutions and the provision of
legal aid clinics in underserved regions can also help bring
legal education closer to students who may otherwise face
geographic barriers.
Strengthening Support Systems
Establishing comprehensive support systems is crucial for
minimizing educational disparities at law institutes.
Academic tutoring, career guidance, and mental health
services should be readily available to all students. By
providing a nurturing environment and addressing the
unique challenges faced by marginalized students, law
institutes can ensure equal opportunities for success.
Enhancing Cultural Competence
Promoting cultural competence within legal education can
create a more inclusive learning environment. Law
institutes should incorporate diverse perspectives and
experiences into the curriculum. Courses focusing on social
justice, diversity, and cultural sensitivity can help develop
well-rounded legal professionals who are prepared to
address the needs of a diverse society.
Collaborating with Legal Professionals and
Organizations
Collaboration between law institutes and legal
professionals/organizations is essential for bridging
educational disparities. Law firms, bar associations, and
nonprofit organizations can play a vital role in providing
mentorship programs, internships, and scholarships to
aspiring legal professionals. By actively engaging with the
legal community, law institutes can ensure that students
from all backgrounds have access to valuable networking
opportunities and real-world experiences.
Evaluating and Improving Diversity Initiatives
Continuous evaluation and improvement of diversity
initiatives are necessary to ensure their effectiveness. Law
institutes should regularly assess the impact of their
programs and policies on minimizing educational
disparities. This includes gathering feedback from students,
monitoring retention rates, and tracking the success of
graduates from diverse backgrounds. Based on these
evaluations, necessary adjustments can be made to enhance
the impact of diversity initiatives.
Minimizing educational disparities at law institutes is a
crucial step toward creating a more just and inclusive legal
profession. By providing equal representation to students
from diverse backgrounds, law institutes can foster a legal
community that reflects the rich diversity of society.
Addressing socioeconomic disparities, promoting racial and
ethnic diversity, encouraging gender equality, bridging
geographical gaps, strengthening support systems,
enhancing cultural competence, and collaborating with
legal professionals and organizations are key strategies to
achieve this goal. Through proactive measures and a
commitment to equality, law institutes can contribute to a
more equitable and representative legal system for all.
