alcutta International School, the oldest
Cinternational school in the eastern region of India,
came into existence as the King’s House School
when a British family started home-schooling their two
sons at their bungalow in Lee Road and hired teachers to
help them with their work.
Slowly word began to spread, encouraging other British
families to send their children there, and soon a British
teacher, Miss Mai Barth, was appointed as the principal.
When the King family returned to the UK, they left the
bungalow and the school to Ms Barth and the school was
officially registered in 1953. Under the leadership of Ms
Barth, it became a full-fledged school called Miss Barth's
School. The school soon evolved to become a reputed
institution providing academic and extramural education.
Miss Barth is believed to have been awarded an OBE for
her relentless dedication to education.
When Miss Barth retired and returned to England, the
parents of the students decided to form a Society to govern
the school, which received its final name - Calcutta
International School (CIS) Society, in 1970. It was
registered under the West Bengal Societies Regulation Act.
Thriving Learning Hub
CIS shifted from the Lee Road premises to its present
sprawling campus at Anandapur, Eastern Metropolitan
Bypass, Kolkata, in 2006. Today, CIS is a thriving learning
hub, with pupils from as many as 17 nationalities from local
and expatriate communities. The school continues to grow
in size and stature, adapting to the evolving needs of future
students.
Setting Benchmarks with Learner-centric Approach
The 2025 vision of CIS entails the accomplishment of its
mission to be hallmark of learner centric, individualised and
holistic education. The school will continue to nurture
students to be lifelong learners with an inclusive and
socially responsible worldview, leading themselves and
others in a fast-changing world.
The mission of CIS is to impart comprehensive, student-
centred education compatible with international standards.
The school provides a welcoming, respectful and
multicultural environment, enabling superior academic
accomplishment.
The school prides itself in its role as a learning hub, with a
strong cosmopolitan culture, safe and secure environment,
well-trained teachers, enviable student-teacher ratio, and
modern infrastructure, all geared to deliver two kinds of
international curricula, adhering to the best international
standards.
Facilitating the Self-actualization
The pedagogy of the school is geared towards facilitating
the self-actualisation of the students. Its core values rest on
the curriculum framework incorporating the six principles
of collaboration, critical thinking, learner agency, research
skill development, and effective communication.
Pupils of CIS are provided with ample opportunities to
grow and evolve to the best of their potential, with
academics and co-curricular activities given equal
weightage at every level.
The core values of CIS are empathy, responsibility and a
high happiness quotient where every member of the
community is accepted, respected and valued.
The Challenge of Growth
Over the years, the school has faced challenges but has
taken the right measures to overcome them. Some of them
are:
Increasing demand for seats- The school has grown in
popularity over the years due to its constant striving to
evolve with the times and the changing needs of students.
The school policy of the student-teacher ratio, which
remains at 24:1, has not been allowed to be compromised
because effective teaching and learning can only happen
when teachers and students are in close communion with
each other.
The mission of CIS is to impart
comprehensive, student-centred
education compatible with
international standards. The school
shall provide a welcoming, respectful
and multi-cultural environment, enabling
superior academic accomplishment.

Limited infrastructure – The school morphed from an
informal setting into a full-fledged school over the years.
Despite moving to a modern campus in 2006, there is a
growing demand for more space to accommodate more
students and subject options. The management has boldly
decided to refurbish the entire facility with a new building
that will accommodate all the infrastructural requirements
of the school.
Pressures from a conventional mindset regarding education
– The school has faced challenges in the form of doubts
regarding its child-centric education, which offers learners
greater agency in their learning.
Sometimes parents from conventional schooling systems
insist on the advantages of sticking to the syllabus. But this
challenge has been mitigated over the years as they have
come to realise the merits of a schooling system that helps
create learners and not mould clones.
Wide Range of Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a definitive programme ECA which is
compulsory from grades 3 to 8. These activities include
Robotics, Western Dance, Photography, Taekwondo, Chess,
Football, Basketball, Table Tennis and Cricket. Students are
invited to take up one ECA of their choice and pursue its
development over the course of the years.
The school is proud that many of its students are nationally
ranked in various sports.
Prioritising Learning Styles and Approaches
At CIS, STEM-based learning represents a unique approach
to teaching and learning that centres around individual
students' learning styles and interests.
STEM moves beyond simple test performance and focuses
on developing higher-level thinking skills by connecting
classroom learning to the real world. STEM emphasises
collaboration, communication, research, problem-solving,
critical thinking, and creativity, skills that students need to
be successful in today's world regardless of specific
interests or career goals.
These skills are developed through Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, Mathematics, and Computer Science and
Information Technology at CIS. The STEM Curriculum is
designed to encompass all the skills and attributes above,
highlighting critical thinking skills through interdisciplinary
collaboration on real-world solutions to real-world
problems.
In keeping with the latest advancement in pedagogy the
school also encourages STEAM based activities which
incorporates Art with the conventional Science, Maths and
ICT streams.
Forming Connections across the Borders
International mindedness is an integral part of the school's
approach. It has students from 17 different nationalities and
is a very diverse community.
It celebrates various international festivals and occasions
th
such as the 4 of July, Bastille Day, Korean Independence
Day, Dia de las Muertos etc. Parents are invited into classes
to talk about the countries they come from and their
cultures.
Apart from that, the school also offers several unique
programmes to allow for global exposure to its students.
• The school has a student exchange programme with
Alfrink College, Netherlands. There is a yearly
immersion programme for students who come from
Alfrink College and interact with CIS students for over
a week. This interaction continues in the online space

as well. This programme gives CIS students an
opportunity to engage with peers from other cultures
and continents.
• Volunteers from Ireland working with the Hope
Foundation also visit the school and spend time
interacting with students.
• CAS trips- The IB requirement for meaningful service-
related activities has led to many interesting projects in
countries like Vietnam, Netherlands, Germany, etc.
• Summer school programme initiatives – which
encourage its learners to experience the pedagogy of
some of the best universities in the world.
Looking Beyond the Grades
To every student in India, CIS has an important message:
“Dear Students, you are the biggest strength of this nation.
Utilise every opportunity to learn and grow. Your growth and
development are not just marked by your grades but by your
ability to adapt and evolve yourself with the changing times-
and while you go from strength to strength, remember to be
compassionate and empathetic towards those who do not
enjoy the privileges and advantages you do. When the time
comes, do make it your goal to contribute to society and
make this world better than you found it to be.”
CIS has a dream it is currently fulfilling, that is, of new
upgraded school premises, which will meet the challenges of
the growing school in the near future.

he National Education Policy
T(NEP) 2020, a landmark
reform in the Indian education
system, aims to revolutionize how
students learn and develop skills. One
crucial aspect of this policy is the
implementation of career education,
which seeks to bridge the gap between
school and college and enhance the
employability index of the country.
Let's explore the role of career
education in alignment with NEP 2020,
delve into its benefits, and a roadmap
to successful execution that highlight
the need for a robust career curriculum.
The Need for Career Education
The Indian education system has
traditionally focused on academic
excellence, often neglecting the
development of practical skills and
career guidance. As a result, many
students are ill-prepared to make
informed career choices, leading to
high dropout rates and a significant gap
between education and employment.
According to a recent report by the
World Economic Forum, 31 per cent
of the participating organizations
emphasize the need to introduce early
skilling in school systems.
Cognitive skills are reportedly in high
demand, reflecting the increasing
importance of complex problem-
solving in the workplace. Surveyed
businesses report creative thinking to
be growing in importance slightly
more rapidly than analytical thinking.

necessary skills and knowledge right
from the primary years.
Bridging Skills Gap, Transforming
Lives
Implementing career education as per
NEP 2020 is vital in bridging the gap
between school and college. It allows
students to explore various career
options, understand their interests and
aptitudes, and make informed
decisions about their future paths. By
introducing vocational training and
experiential learning opportunities,
students gain hands-on experience and
develop practical skills that will result
in better employability.
One successful example of bridging
this gap is the 'National Career Service'
(NCS) initiative by the Ministry of
Labour and Employment, which
provides a one-stop platform for career
guidance, skill development, and job
placement. Through the NCS portal,
students can access information on
various careers, and vocational
courses, and even interact with
industry professionals. Such initiatives
empower students to make informed
choices and transition seamlessly from
school to college, with a clear
understanding of their career goals. We
at SkillsReform, are trying to introduce
the need for career education in
schools through our 'Future Skilling
Initiative' program where each year 25
schools are selected to implement the
curriculum and record the impact
through a survey-based analysis.
Enhancing Employability
Career education plays a crucial role in
enhancing the employability index of
the country. By equipping students
with relevant skills, knowledge, and
practical experience, they become
better prepared to meet the demands of
the rapidly changing job market. For

students learn critical thinking,
problem-solving, and teamwork, which
are highly valued by employers. While
this essentially gives a chance to those
interested, schools should introduce a
competency-based curriculum

Additionally, integrating industry
collaborations and internships into the
curriculum provides students with real-
world exposure and the opportunity to
apply their theoretical knowledge. The
NEP 2020 emphasizes such
need to train teachers on skills,
subjects, and how each subject require
specific skills that lead to better
adjustments in the world of work.

is one that requires bold and innovative
thinking and this landscape is set to
undergo significant transformations.
With advancements in technology,
changing pedagogical approaches and
evolving societal needs, the future of
schools in India holds great potential
for innovation and improved learning
outcomes.
Acknowledging the Current State of
Schools in India
India has one of the largest education
systems in the world, with over 1.4
million schools and more than 250
million students enrolled. However,
despite this vast network, the quality of
education remains a major concern.
One of the biggest challenges facing
Indian schools is the lack of resources,
including trained teachers, adequate
infrastructure and modern teaching
tools. According to a report by
UNESCO, the student-teacher ratio in
India is much higher than the global
average of 26:1.
Additionally, many schools lack basic
facilities such as clean water, toilets
and electricity, making it difficult for
students to learn in a safe and healthy
environment. To create a brighter
future for Indian students, people
working in the education and schooling
sectors must embrace new ideas and
work together to implement them
effectively. Educators and

policymakers alike must be willing to take risks and
experiment with new approaches to teaching and learning.
This article explores the key trends and developments that
are likely to shape the future of schools in India and their
implications for students, teachers, and the education
system as a whole.
Technological Advancements
Technology has been revolutionizing the way education is
delivered, and its integration into schools will be a defining
aspect of the future. Furthermore, it has made it possible for
students to learn at their own pace and in their own style,
allowing for a more personalized learning experience. In
the future, digital platforms, online learning tools and
educational applications will become commonplace,
providing students with access to a vast array of resources.
Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR and AR) will create
immersive learning environments, enabling students to
explore complex concepts and subjects in engaging and
interactive ways. Technologies such as Video Conferencing,
Hybrid Learning, Online Textbooks, Smart Tables,
Projectors, etc. will also streamline administrative tasks,
automate assessments and enhance communication between
stakeholders, fostering greater efficiency and collaboration.
Innovative Ways of Learning
The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of blended
learning, a combination of traditional classroom instruction
and online learning. This approach will continue to gain
prominence in the future, developing critical thinking and
problem-solving skills. Blended learning models allow
students to learn at their own pace, access educational
materials remotely and collaborate with peers beyond the
confines of the physical classroom. Moreover, it will not
only allow students to work on real-world projects that are
relevant to their interests and passions but also increase
their engagement in education.
For that, schools are required to invest in infrastructure and
training for teachers to effectively deliver blended learning
experiences, ensuring equitable access to quality education
for all students, regardless of their geographical location or
socioeconomic background. One more approach is Flipped
Learning—an instructional strategy and a part of blended
learning. It involves students watching pre-recorded
lectures at home and then using class time for discussions
and hands-on activities. This allows for more personalized
learning and helps students develop independent learning
skills. This has been successfully implemented in schools
across India, with some teachers reporting increased student
engagement and improved academic performance.
Social and Emotional Touch to Learning
Recognizing the importance of holistic development, the
future of schools in India will place greater emphasis on
social and emotional learning (SEL). This method equips
students with skills such as emotional intelligence,
empathy, resilience, and well-being. It would be beneficial
for schools to integrate SEL into the curriculum. By
prioritizing SEL, schools will cultivate students who are not
only academically competent but also socially and
emotionally aware, preparing them for success in their
personal and professional lives.
Assessments and Feedback
Traditional exams and assessments are on the verge of
transformation, making way for more diverse and authentic
forms of evaluation. Competency-based assessments,
portfolios, projects, and real-world simulations will gauge
students' progress and showcase their skills and knowledge.
These assessments will provide a more comprehensive
understanding of student abilities and offer meaningful
feedback to guide further learning. The focus will shift from
a mere emphasis on grades to a more holistic evaluation of
students' strengths, weaknesses and overall growth.
Smart Future Teachers
The crucial role of teachers will evolve from being the sole
source of knowledge to that of a guide, mentor and
facilitator of learning. They will adopt the role of learning
facilitators, leveraging technology and personalized
learning approaches to meet individual student needs.
Continuous professional development programs will equip
teachers with the skills and knowledge to adapt to new
teaching methodologies and effectively utilize technology
in the classroom.
Conclusion
The future of schools in India holds immense potential for
transformative change. Technology integration, blended and
personalized learning, social and emotional learning,
evolving assessments, and smart future teachers will
reshape the education landscape. As schools embrace these
developments, they will foster a generation of learners who
are adaptable, innovative and equipped to navigate the
challenges and opportunities of the future. India can pave
the way for a brighter and more prosperous society by
investing in the future of education.

modern and even radical measures.
The school believes in stimulating its
wards to outthink the syllabus and find
their niche. The success of this can be
gleaned by perusing the Alumni list of
the school, which would highlight the
fact that they are in a position for the
upliftment of society and sincerely
continue to do so.
Battle Against the Barriers
The main challenges that the school
faced in the initial years of operations
were 'limited trained manpower to
recruit,' mindset of the local population
vis-à-vis global schools, Cost Barrier
and Scaling up IT infra.
The school put together a core team for
the initial operations and then engaged
in continuous training and exposure for
the faculty to bring them up to
standards expected to impart global
education. Positive messaging, CSR
activities and word-of-mouth helped
the school win over the local populace
as well as break stereotypes about
world-class facilities being out of reach
of the common person.
Expansion of Repertoire
The school boasts an Olympic-sized
swimming pool, cricket nets with
TNCA-qualified coaches, two five-a-
side football grounds, and facilities for
tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Rifle,
Skating, Karate, Yoga, Throwball, and
more.
Students have scaled the podium at
many state-level and national meets.
Further, the school takes the initiative
to create records for the Guinness
Book of Records. Yoga, bird-watchers
club and more are also facilitated for
students to expand their repertoire and
elevate their critical thinking quotient.
Introducing Students to New Trends
With both tech and non-tech
companies going on hiring STEM
talent, The Camford International
School encourages students to be
aligned to STEM-based education.
Students are also counselled on the
latest trends to impart awareness of the
present and future of the employment
scenario.
Global Exposure
The school follows a global student
exchange program and has tied up with
multiple schools and universities for
the same. Students have visited other
countries' schools as a part of this
programme, and The Camford
International School too has hosted and
continues to host students from many
countries and cultures under this
exchange programme.
As a leading school, it advises students
to embrace technology, keep upgrading
skills, and go global but remain firmly
local for the enhancement of society.
The school aspires to be a global
player providing cutting-edge
education and creating leaders who
will shape the destiny of the spheres
they choose to be in.

he COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the
Teducation system in India and around the world,
forcing a shift to online and remote learning.
However, this crisis has also created an opportunity for
innovative reforms in the education sector. Here are some
additional transformative ideas that are reshaping education
in India:
Gamification of Education is an innovative trend that is
gaining popularity. It involves incorporating game
elements, such as rewards, challenges, and leaderboards,
into the learning process. This approach makes learning
more engaging and enjoyable while fostering problem-
solving skills, critical thinking, and collaboration among
students.
Microlearning and Bite-sized Content deliver educational
content in easily digestible modules. Recognising the
diminishing attention spans of students, this approach
leverages short and focused lessons that can be consumed
anytime, anywhere.
Microlearning promotes continuous learning and enables
students to learn at their own pace.
Adaptive Learning Platforms, powered by artificial
intelligence and machine learning algorithms, personalise
the learning experience for each student based on their
individual strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. These
platforms continuously analyse data to provide targeted
interventions and support, ensuring optimal learning
outcomes.
The future of education is digital, driven by artificial
intelligence (AI) and technology. Traditional classrooms are
being transformed as students increasingly rely on gadgets
for assignments, and teachers incorporate virtual reality
experiences and interactive whiteboards into instructional
plans. AI has revolutionised various fields, including
education, with virtual assistants, tutoring systems, and
language translation technology being increasingly utilised
in classrooms. However, challenges such as equitable
access and digital skills need to be addressed to ensure a
fair rollout of AI in education.
Remote, digital, and personalised learning is another reform
taking shape in the education sector. Innovative methods
and personalised approaches cater to the unique strengths,
needs, talents, and interests of each student. The New
Education Policy emphasises providing flexibility and
choice in learning paths, enabling students to learn at their
own pace and style while fostering lifelong learning habits.
Project-based and well-designed pedagogy is crucial in
preparing students as future skill forces. It involves students
working on real-world problems or challenges that require
interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. Well-designed
pedagogy employs evidence-based practices and strategies
to enhance student engagement, motivation, and learning
outcomes.
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)
technologies are transforming education by providing real-
time information and immersive experiences. AR textbooks
provide an in-depth understanding, while VR simulates
environments that are difficult to access. Students can
practice skills and explore complex concepts through VR
scenarios.
The future of education lies in skill education, where
technical training becomes more valuable than traditional

technology, collaborative learning and
impactful teacher training to create a
dynamic and engaging learning
environment.

uncertainties as well as incorporating
innovations in processes. Schools
being the powerhouses of education
have played a pivotal role in
transforming the sector.
Additionally, with the number of
schools increasing, there is a need for
substantial development in the way
things are taught. The education sphere
is expanding and reshaping or
reforming the same is one of the
biggest responsibilities of today's
schools; whether they hail from urban
areas or rural parts. Indian schools and
their transformative impact are the two

personalities of India. Fast forward to
today's age, an integral pillar of Indian
society, education has witnessed
various transformations. Additionally,
the sector has also started coping with
'
their classes and for students to
comprehend them. Teachers can
separate their lessons using different
technologies and deliver them in a
multimedia-rich style. As a result,
learning becomes more engaging and
encourages students to pay more
attention to the material.
Additionally, as a survey emphasizes
the percentage of visual leaders is more
than 60 per cent, visually appealing
learning methods are the future of
modern education. Making the learning
process more aesthetically appealing
has a benefit. Textbooks have their
limitations and hence, videos and
animations, if compared to 2D
drawings, make it simpler to
comprehend complex ideas. With a
simpler learning process, students start
to exhibit more interest in it, resulting
in enjoying the education pattern. The
number of students attending lessons
has increased significantly in schools
that have used the Smart Class
technology.
Personalized Learning: A
Customized Approach
Each student is unique and instead of
moulding students according to a
specific education pattern, capturing
his/her pace of learning is important
these days. The concept is called
personalized learning and the pace of
education at schools must be adjusted
for each student individually in order
to achieve the optimum results. AI has
become a great help and over the past
few years, advancements in AI
technology have been helping students
and teachers to experience
personalized learning. With the use of
different tools, several AI applications
are enabling customised learning
wherein teachers tailor the sessions to
their learning styles and the pacing of
specific students. Students learn more
easily and don't become bored or feel
overburdened because of competency-
based learning.
Cloud Computing: Setting New
Standards
Many young students who desire to go
to school reside in locations where
there is no school at all. These students
can have the chance to receive top-
notch education with the aid of cloud
computing and e-learning. With the use
of technology, teachers can
communicate with students remotely
and impart knowledge in a clear and
effective way. Technology has made it
possible for schools to bring the
classroom to the students, and it is
crucial in advancing education in India.
Collaborative Learning: Need of an
Era
There is a great difference between
learning and applying this education in
real time, especially working with like
minds or groups working for the same
motto. For students to gel in the
practical environment in the future, a
collaborative approach is the best way.
Collaborative learning is a key focus in
Indian schools, where students are
encouraged to work together on group
projects and engage in peer teaching.
This approach not only enhances
students' social skills but also promotes
critical thinking and problem-solving
abilities. Moreover, in this type of
learning, students get the opportunity
to learn from others' skills and
resources.
One successful example of
collaborative learning in Indian schools
is the 'buddy system,' where older
students are paired with younger ones
to help them with their studies and
other activities. This not only helps
younger students academically but also
fosters a sense of responsibility and
leadership in the older students.

Teacher Education: Creating a
Smarter Generation
Indian schools are recognizing the
need for continuous teacher training
and development. Teachers are being
equipped with the skills and
knowledge necessary to adapt to new
teaching methodologies and effectively
integrate technology into their
classrooms. For smart and professional
development of teachers, Indian
schools are taking a proactive approach
to ensure that their teachers are
equipped with the skills and
knowledge needed to implement
innovative teaching methods and
technology in the classroom.
Moreover, through investing in teacher
training and professional development
programs, Indian schools are helping
their educators stay up to date with the
latest trends and techniques in
education. These programs provide
teachers with the opportunity to learn
new skills, collaborate with other
educators and gain valuable insights
into effective teaching practices.
The factors mentioned above go hand
in hand. They bond and create a
symbiotic relationship that helps the
learning landscape grow exponentially.
From acknowledging the pace of
student learning to applying
technology, every factor has its own
importance. To fast-track education,
schools are primary sources and they
must implement the above strategies to
create student-centered, inclusive and
future-ready educational environments.
After all, it is now time to produce

significantly impacted and altered by this. The following list
of factors illustrates how a pandemic's effects might be seen
collectively:
The Effects on Students: Lockdown was the main line of
resistance against the COVID-19 pandemic. We were
completely unfamiliar with the idea itself. This lockdown
may have effects on various facets of life—especially the
solitude it brought. Students were now required to stay put,
even though they would often go out to see their buddies
every day. Social networking has a good effect on students'
general personal development that cannot be understated.
Many pupils felt isolated due to the lack of such social solid
contact.
Over 53 per cent of Indian university students experience
moderate to severe depression, according to a study that
was published in the Asian Journal of Psychiatry. Many
pupils experienced future anxiety. Some people experienced
confidence loss, and some even ended their very first
partnerships. We cannot even begin to comprehend the
assistance and support that our students will require to
survive the pandemic.
Students are having a hard time adjusting to life after the
pandemic. Many people currently feel helpless about the
future they may have. Plans for students to study abroad
were put on hold. Additionally, there were fewer
opportunities for internships and hands-on training. During
online lectures and evaluations, the student's veracity was
seriously questioned. Many teachers concurred that pupils
were plying their way through online tests. This led to a
situation that was disappointing for sincere pupils.

Post- -19
COVID
O
n May 5th, 2023, the World Health Organization
revised its assessment of the coronavirus
pandemic, stating that it is no longer considered a
global emergency. It means that nations need to stop
treating COVID-19 as an emergency and start handling it
like any other infectious disease.
All of us were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in
ways that we still don't fully understand. Many of these
impacts could be seen and felt directly. However, it also had
an impact on us in a number of intangible ways. It left our
mental health with an unheard-of scar. Regardless of their
nationalities, genders, social statuses, or religion, everyone
was impacted by the pandemic. It also sheds light on a
number of societal shortcomings and disparities,
particularly in the areas of employment and education.
Our immediate response to this pandemic, lockdown,
actually divided society. Some people supported it, but
others felt they couldn't afford it. Staying ‘locked down’
eventually ceased to be necessary and started to become a
privilege. The education sector experienced strict
compliance in India's scheduled lockdown phases, from
Lockdown 1.0 to Lockdown 5.0. Moreover, for clear
reasons.
It makes sense that educational institutions would be
seriously shut down because they serve as a breeding
ground for the transmission of such infections. It lists 993
universities, according to the Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD). Serving almost 32 billion students.
Who in India was compelled to remain inside during these
lockdown periods? Their educational trajectory was
July 2023 32
There was also the socioeconomic gap.
Students had to have the fundamental
digital learning infrastructure, including
laptops, basic internet access, and software
support, as universities had to transition to
online learning. It was particularly
challenging for students from rural areas to
adjust to these developments. Education,
and especially ‘Digital Education,’ turned
into a privilege. The digital divide has
gotten worse.
Instead, this method of distribution
compelled college professors and students
to adapt to the digital form of education,
leading to a paradigm shift in the way that
people teach and learn. Now that
universities may reach more students
abroad, enrollment and internationalisation
might rise.
The pandemic demonstrated that colleges
could now deliver the same high-quality
instruction they provide in person from the
convenience of students’ homes.
Universities are still affected by the
pandemic. Thus, hybrid and blended
learning strategies that mix traditional
classroom instruction with online learning
could be used.

Aftermath of the
COVID-19 Pandemic
had established for ourselves. The educational system was
unprepared for this and had to put its tried-and-true
traditional practices to the test. Universities changed their
educational delivery strategies, assessment procedures, and
learning outcomes as a result of the pandemic, which forced
them to be innovative and adapt to survive.
In order to keep students and staff safe, universities
switched from traditional classroom learning to digital
delivery methods, including online learning, hybrid
learning, or blended learning. Universities have to modify
their examination and evaluation procedures as a
result of the pandemic.
The universities had to switch to online exams when
COVID-19 started. Professors at universities who had
never taught online switched to this distribution
method. Survival of the fittest applied. The transition
to online mode was challenging for the traditionalist.
For some, it was extremely intrusive to believe that
you cannot see your students, but they can see you.
Others, though, saw it as a chance to express
themselves more creatively. Now, even the furthest-
flung students could be reached. Universities are now
seeking ways to fully utilise technology since it has
become more important and prominent than ever
before.
Furthermore, as more colleges switch to digital forms
of learning and evaluation, technological usage is
projected to rise. Universities could use cutting-edge
technology like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented
Reality (AR), which are becoming more and more
relevant daily, to instruct students and experiment
with new teaching methods.
In conclusion, the pandemic tested both students and
faculty, who are the two key stakeholders in the
education sector. Even if there is still much to be
determined, the Indian education industry set the bar
for many emerging nations in terms of adjusting to the
‘New Normal.’
Many institutions have been taking steps to build a
compassionate environment for their students, such as
hiring a full-time counsellor and setting up campaigns
to raise awareness of mental health issues. They could
undoubtedly do more, though. Institutions of higher
learning must view mental health as a requirement for
academic advancement.
The pandemic offered a chance to reevaluate
conventional educational models and develop new
transdisciplinary, long-lasting models that meet the
changing demands of institutions. The New Education
Policy (NEP) 2020 has undoubtedly created the
conditions for such educational growth. It would be
interesting to observe how universities and students
create new paths.

  • 11. alcutta International School, the oldest Cinternational school in the eastern region of India, came into existence as the King’s House School when a British family started home-schooling their two sons at their bungalow in Lee Road and hired teachers to help them with their work. Slowly word began to spread, encouraging other British families to send their children there, and soon a British teacher, Miss Mai Barth, was appointed as the principal. When the King family returned to the UK, they left the bungalow and the school to Ms Barth and the school was officially registered in 1953. Under the leadership of Ms Barth, it became a full-fledged school called Miss Barth's School. The school soon evolved to become a reputed institution providing academic and extramural education. Miss Barth is believed to have been awarded an OBE for her relentless dedication to education. When Miss Barth retired and returned to England, the parents of the students decided to form a Society to govern the school, which received its final name - Calcutta International School (CIS) Society, in 1970. It was registered under the West Bengal Societies Regulation Act. Thriving Learning Hub CIS shifted from the Lee Road premises to its present sprawling campus at Anandapur, Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Kolkata, in 2006. Today, CIS is a thriving learning hub, with pupils from as many as 17 nationalities from local and expatriate communities. The school continues to grow in size and stature, adapting to the evolving needs of future students. Setting Benchmarks with Learner-centric Approach The 2025 vision of CIS entails the accomplishment of its mission to be hallmark of learner centric, individualised and holistic education. The school will continue to nurture students to be lifelong learners with an inclusive and socially responsible worldview, leading themselves and others in a fast-changing world. The mission of CIS is to impart comprehensive, student- centred education compatible with international standards. The school provides a welcoming, respectful and multicultural environment, enabling superior academic accomplishment. The school prides itself in its role as a learning hub, with a strong cosmopolitan culture, safe and secure environment, well-trained teachers, enviable student-teacher ratio, and modern infrastructure, all geared to deliver two kinds of international curricula, adhering to the best international standards. Facilitating the Self-actualization The pedagogy of the school is geared towards facilitating the self-actualisation of the students. Its core values rest on the curriculum framework incorporating the six principles of collaboration, critical thinking, learner agency, research skill development, and effective communication. Pupils of CIS are provided with ample opportunities to grow and evolve to the best of their potential, with academics and co-curricular activities given equal weightage at every level. The core values of CIS are empathy, responsibility and a high happiness quotient where every member of the community is accepted, respected and valued. The Challenge of Growth Over the years, the school has faced challenges but has taken the right measures to overcome them. Some of them are: Increasing demand for seats- The school has grown in popularity over the years due to its constant striving to evolve with the times and the changing needs of students. The school policy of the student-teacher ratio, which remains at 24:1, has not been allowed to be compromised because effective teaching and learning can only happen when teachers and students are in close communion with each other. The mission of CIS is to impart comprehensive, student-centred education compatible with international standards. The school shall provide a welcoming, respectful and multi-cultural environment, enabling superior academic accomplishment. The Best Schools in India to Study, 2023 www.theknowledgereview.com 9
  • 12. Limited infrastructure – The school morphed from an informal setting into a full-fledged school over the years. Despite moving to a modern campus in 2006, there is a growing demand for more space to accommodate more students and subject options. The management has boldly decided to refurbish the entire facility with a new building that will accommodate all the infrastructural requirements of the school. Pressures from a conventional mindset regarding education – The school has faced challenges in the form of doubts regarding its child-centric education, which offers learners greater agency in their learning. Sometimes parents from conventional schooling systems insist on the advantages of sticking to the syllabus. But this challenge has been mitigated over the years as they have come to realise the merits of a schooling system that helps create learners and not mould clones. Wide Range of Extracurricular Activities The school offers a definitive programme ECA which is compulsory from grades 3 to 8. These activities include Robotics, Western Dance, Photography, Taekwondo, Chess, Football, Basketball, Table Tennis and Cricket. Students are invited to take up one ECA of their choice and pursue its development over the course of the years. The school is proud that many of its students are nationally ranked in various sports. Prioritising Learning Styles and Approaches At CIS, STEM-based learning represents a unique approach to teaching and learning that centres around individual students' learning styles and interests. STEM moves beyond simple test performance and focuses on developing higher-level thinking skills by connecting classroom learning to the real world. STEM emphasises collaboration, communication, research, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity, skills that students need to be successful in today's world regardless of specific interests or career goals. These skills are developed through Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Computer Science and Information Technology at CIS. The STEM Curriculum is designed to encompass all the skills and attributes above, highlighting critical thinking skills through interdisciplinary collaboration on real-world solutions to real-world problems. In keeping with the latest advancement in pedagogy the school also encourages STEAM based activities which incorporates Art with the conventional Science, Maths and ICT streams. Forming Connections across the Borders International mindedness is an integral part of the school's approach. It has students from 17 different nationalities and is a very diverse community. It celebrates various international festivals and occasions th such as the 4 of July, Bastille Day, Korean Independence Day, Dia de las Muertos etc. Parents are invited into classes to talk about the countries they come from and their cultures. Apart from that, the school also offers several unique programmes to allow for global exposure to its students. • The school has a student exchange programme with Alfrink College, Netherlands. There is a yearly immersion programme for students who come from Alfrink College and interact with CIS students for over a week. This interaction continues in the online space July 2023 10
  • 13. as well. This programme gives CIS students an opportunity to engage with peers from other cultures and continents. • Volunteers from Ireland working with the Hope Foundation also visit the school and spend time interacting with students. • CAS trips- The IB requirement for meaningful service- related activities has led to many interesting projects in countries like Vietnam, Netherlands, Germany, etc. • Summer school programme initiatives – which encourage its learners to experience the pedagogy of some of the best universities in the world. Looking Beyond the Grades To every student in India, CIS has an important message: “Dear Students, you are the biggest strength of this nation. Utilise every opportunity to learn and grow. Your growth and development are not just marked by your grades but by your ability to adapt and evolve yourself with the changing times- and while you go from strength to strength, remember to be compassionate and empathetic towards those who do not enjoy the privileges and advantages you do. When the time comes, do make it your goal to contribute to society and make this world better than you found it to be.” CIS has a dream it is currently fulfilling, that is, of new upgraded school premises, which will meet the challenges of the growing school in the near future. Our pedagogy is geared towards facilitating the self-actualization of the students. www.theknowledgereview.com 11
  • 14. Accelerating Transitions and Enhancing Employability The Role of Career Education in Schools that encapsulates, curiosity and lifelong learning; resilience, flexibility, and agility; and motivation and self- awareness. Systems thinking, AI and big data, talent management, and service orientation and customer service complete the top 10 growing skills. This underscores the urgency of incorporating career education into the curriculum to equip students with the he National Education Policy T(NEP) 2020, a landmark reform in the Indian education system, aims to revolutionize how students learn and develop skills. One crucial aspect of this policy is the implementation of career education, which seeks to bridge the gap between school and college and enhance the employability index of the country. Let's explore the role of career education in alignment with NEP 2020, delve into its benefits, and a roadmap to successful execution that highlight the need for a robust career curriculum. The Need for Career Education The Indian education system has traditionally focused on academic excellence, often neglecting the development of practical skills and career guidance. As a result, many students are ill-prepared to make informed career choices, leading to high dropout rates and a significant gap between education and employment. According to a recent report by the World Economic Forum, 31 per cent of the participating organizations emphasize the need to introduce early skilling in school systems. Cognitive skills are reportedly in high demand, reflecting the increasing importance of complex problem- solving in the workplace. Surveyed businesses report creative thinking to be growing in importance slightly more rapidly than analytical thinking. Technology literacy is the third-fastest growing core skill. Self-efficacy skills rank above working with others, in the rate of increase in the importance of skills reported by businesses. The socio-emotional attitudes at the workplace are growing in importance July 2023 12
  • 15. necessary skills and knowledge right from the primary years. Bridging Skills Gap, Transforming Lives Implementing career education as per NEP 2020 is vital in bridging the gap between school and college. It allows students to explore various career options, understand their interests and aptitudes, and make informed decisions about their future paths. By introducing vocational training and experiential learning opportunities, students gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills that will result in better employability. One successful example of bridging this gap is the 'National Career Service' (NCS) initiative by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which provides a one-stop platform for career guidance, skill development, and job placement. • 19. progress; the country strides into the advanced and magical future of schools. The future of schools in India is one that requires bold and innovative thinking and this landscape is set to undergo significant transformations. With advancements in technology, changing pedagogical approaches and evolving societal needs, the future of schools in India holds great potential for innovation and improved learning outcomes. Acknowledging the Current State of Schools in India India has one of the largest education systems in the world, with over 1.4 million schools and more than 250 million students enrolled. However, despite this vast network, the quality of education remains a major concern. One of the biggest challenges facing Indian schools is the lack of resources, including trained teachers, adequate infrastructure and modern teaching tools. According to a report by UNESCO, the student-teacher ratio in India is much higher than the global average of 26:1. Additionally, many schools lack basic facilities such as clean water, toilets and electricity, making it difficult for students to learn in a safe and healthy environment. To create a brighter future for Indian students, people working in the education and schooling sectors must embrace new ideas and work together to implement them effectively. • 20. policymakers alike must be willing to take risks and experiment with new approaches to teaching and learning. This article explores the key trends and developments that are likely to shape the future of schools in India and their implications for students, teachers, and the education system as a whole. Technological Advancements Technology has been revolutionizing the way education is delivered, and its integration into schools will be a defining aspect of the future. Furthermore, it has made it possible for students to learn at their own pace and in their own style, allowing for a more personalized learning experience. In the future, digital platforms, online learning tools and educational applications will become commonplace, providing students with access to a vast array of resources. Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR and AR) will create immersive learning environments, enabling students to explore complex concepts and subjects in engaging and interactive ways. Technologies such as Video Conferencing, Hybrid Learning, Online Textbooks, Smart Tables, Projectors, etc. will also streamline administrative tasks, automate assessments and enhance communication between stakeholders, fostering greater efficiency and collaboration. Innovative Ways of Learning The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of blended learning, a combination of traditional classroom instruction and online learning. This approach will continue to gain prominence in the future, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Blended learning models allow students to learn at their own pace, access educational materials remotely and collaborate with peers beyond the confines of the physical classroom. Moreover, it will not only allow students to work on real-world projects that are relevant to their interests and passions but also increase their engagement in education. For that, schools are required to invest in infrastructure and training for teachers to effectively deliver blended learning experiences, ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic background. One more approach is Flipped Learning—an instructional strategy and a part of blended learning. It involves students watching pre-recorded lectures at home and then using class time for discussions and hands-on activities. This allows for more personalized learning and helps students develop independent learning skills. This has been successfully implemented in schools across India, with some teachers reporting increased student engagement and improved academic performance. Social and Emotional Touch to Learning Recognizing the importance of holistic development, the future of schools in India will place greater emphasis on social and emotional learning (SEL). This method equips students with skills such as emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience, and well-being. It would be beneficial for schools to integrate SEL into the curriculum. By prioritizing SEL, schools will cultivate students who are not only academically competent but also socially and emotionally aware, preparing them for success in their personal and professional lives. Assessments and Feedback Traditional exams and assessments are on the verge of transformation, making way for more diverse and authentic forms of evaluation. Competency-based assessments, portfolios, projects, and real-world simulations will gauge students' progress and showcase their skills and knowledge. These assessments will provide a more comprehensive understanding of student abilities and offer meaningful feedback to guide further learning. The focus will shift from a mere emphasis on grades to a more holistic evaluation of students' strengths, weaknesses and overall growth. Smart Future Teachers The crucial role of teachers will evolve from being the sole source of knowledge to that of a guide, mentor and facilitator of learning. They will adopt the role of learning facilitators, leveraging technology and personalized learning approaches to meet individual student needs. Continuous professional development programs will equip teachers with the skills and knowledge to adapt to new teaching methodologies and effectively utilize technology in the classroom. Conclusion The future of schools in India holds immense potential for transformative change. Technology integration, blended and personalized learning, social and emotional learning, evolving assessments, and smart future teachers will reshape the education landscape. As schools embrace these developments, they will foster a generation of learners who are adaptable, innovative and equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future. India can pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous society by investing in the future of education. July 2023 18

  • 28. he COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the Teducation system in India and around the world, forcing a shift to online and remote learning. However, this crisis has also created an opportunity for innovative reforms in the education sector. Here are some additional transformative ideas that are reshaping education in India: Gamification of Education is an innovative trend that is gaining popularity. It involves incorporating game elements, such as rewards, challenges, and leaderboards, into the learning process. This approach makes learning more engaging and enjoyable while fostering problem- solving skills, critical thinking, and collaboration among students. Microlearning and Bite-sized Content deliver educational content in easily digestible modules. Recognising the diminishing attention spans of students, this approach leverages short and focused lessons that can be consumed anytime, anywhere. AI has revolutionised various fields, including education, with virtual assistants, tutoring systems, and language translation technology being increasingly utilised in classrooms. However, challenges such as equitable access and digital skills need to be addressed to ensure a fair rollout of AI in education. Remote, digital, and personalised learning is another reform taking shape in the education sector. Innovative methods and personalised approaches cater to the unique strengths, needs, talents, and interests of each student. The New Education Policy emphasises providing flexibility and choice in learning paths, enabling students to learn at their own pace and style while fostering lifelong learning habits. Project-based and well-designed pedagogy is crucial in preparing students as future skill forces. It involves students working on real-world problems or challenges that require interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. Well-designed pedagogy employs evidence-based practices and strategies to enhance student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies are transforming education by providing real- time information and immersive experiences. AR textbooks provide an in-depth understanding, while VR simulates environments that are difficult to access. Students can practice skills and explore complex concepts through VR scenarios. As a result, learning becomes more engaging and encourages students to pay more attention to the material. Additionally, as a survey emphasizes the percentage of visual leaders is more than 60 per cent, visually appealing learning methods are the future of modern education. With a simpler learning process, students start to exhibit more interest in it, resulting in enjoying the education pattern. The number of students attending lessons has increased significantly in schools that have used the Smart Class technology. Personalized Learning: A Customized Approach Each student is unique and instead of moulding students according to a specific education pattern, capturing his/her pace of learning is important these days. The concept is called personalized learning and the pace of education at schools must be adjusted for each student individually in order to achieve the optimum results. AI has become a great help and over the past few years, advancements in AI technology have been helping students and teachers to experience personalized learning. With the use of different tools, several AI applications are enabling customised learning wherein teachers tailor the sessions to their learning styles and the pacing of specific students. Students learn more easily and don't become bored or feel overburdened because of competency- based learning. Cloud Computing: Setting New Standards Many young students who desire to go to school reside in locations where there is no school at all. These students can have the chance to receive top- notch education with the aid of cloud computing and e-learning. With the use of technology, teachers can communicate with students remotely and impart knowledge in a clear and effective way. Technology has made it possible for schools to bring the classroom to the students, and it is crucial in advancing education in India. Collaborative Learning: Need of an Era There is a great difference between learning and applying this education in real time, especially working with like minds or groups working for the same motto. For students to gel in the practical environment in the future, a collaborative approach is the best way. Collaborative learning is a key focus in Indian schools, where students are encouraged to work together on group projects and engage in peer teaching. This approach not only enhances students' social skills but also promotes critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Moreover, in this type of learning, students get the opportunity to learn from others' skills and resources. One successful example of collaborative learning in Indian schools is the 'buddy system,' where older students are paired with younger ones to help them with their studies and other activities. This not only helps younger students academically but also fosters a sense of responsibility and leadership in the older students. July 2023 30 Teacher Education: Creating a Smarter Generation Indian schools are recognizing the need for continuous teacher training and development. Teachers are being equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to adapt to new teaching methodologies and effectively integrate technology into their classrooms. For smart and professional development of teachers, Indian schools are taking a proactive approach to ensure that their teachers are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to implement innovative teaching methods and technology in the classroom. Moreover, through investing in teacher training and professional development programs, Indian schools are helping their educators stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques in education. These programs provide teachers with the opportunity to learn new skills, collaborate with other educators and gain valuable insights into effective teaching practices. The factors mentioned above go hand in hand. They bond and create a symbiotic relationship that helps the learning landscape grow exponentially. From acknowledging the pace of student learning to applying technology, every factor has its own importance. The following list of factors illustrates how a pandemic's effects might be seen collectively: The Effects on Students: Lockdown was the main line of resistance against the COVID-19 pandemic. We were completely unfamiliar with the idea itself. This lockdown may have effects on various facets of life—especially the solitude it brought. Students were now required to stay put, even though they would often go out to see their buddies every day. Social networking has a good effect on students' general personal development that cannot be understated. Many pupils felt isolated due to the lack of such social solid contact. Over 53 per cent of Indian university students experience moderate to severe depression, according to a study that was published in the Asian Journal of Psychiatry. Many pupils experienced future anxiety. Some people experienced confidence loss, and some even ended their very first partnerships. We cannot even begin to comprehend the assistance and support that our students will require to survive the pandemic. Students are having a hard time adjusting to life after the pandemic. Many people currently feel helpless about the future they may have. Plans for students to study abroad were put on hold. Additionally, there were fewer opportunities for internships and hands-on training. During online lectures and evaluations, the student's veracity was seriously questioned. Many teachers concurred that pupils were plying their way through online tests. This led to a situation that was disappointing for sincere pupils. TheFuture ofHigher Education Post- -19 COVID O n May 5th, 2023, the World Health Organization revised its assessment of the coronavirus pandemic, stating that it is no longer considered a global emergency. It means that nations need to stop treating COVID-19 as an emergency and start handling it like any other infectious disease. All of us were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in ways that we still don't fully understand. Many of these impacts could be seen and felt directly. However, it also had an impact on us in a number of intangible ways. It left our mental health with an unheard-of scar. Regardless of their nationalities, genders, social statuses, or religion, everyone was impacted by the pandemic. It also sheds light on a number of societal shortcomings and disparities, particularly in the areas of employment and education. Our immediate response to this pandemic, lockdown, actually divided society. Some people supported it, but others felt they couldn't afford it. Staying ‘locked down’ eventually ceased to be necessary and started to become a privilege. The education sector experienced strict compliance in India's scheduled lockdown phases, from Lockdown 1.0 to Lockdown 5.0. Moreover, for clear reasons. It makes sense that educational institutions would be seriously shut down because they serve as a breeding ground for the transmission of such infections. • 35. There was also the socioeconomic gap. Students had to have the fundamental digital learning infrastructure, including laptops, basic internet access, and software support, as universities had to transition to online learning. It was particularly challenging for students from rural areas to adjust to these developments. Education, and especially ‘Digital Education,’ turned into a privilege. The digital divide has gotten worse. Instead, this method of distribution compelled college professors and students to adapt to the digital form of education, leading to a paradigm shift in the way that people teach and learn. Now that universities may reach more students abroad, enrollment and internationalisation might rise. The pandemic demonstrated that colleges could now deliver the same high-quality instruction they provide in person from the convenience of students’ homes. Universities are still affected by the pandemic. Thus, hybrid and blended learning strategies that mix traditional classroom instruction with online learning could be used. Universities changed their educational delivery strategies, assessment procedures, and learning outcomes as a result of the pandemic, which forced them to be innovative and adapt to survive. In order to keep students and staff safe, universities switched from traditional classroom learning to digital delivery methods, including online learning, hybrid learning, or blended learning. Universities have to modify their examination and evaluation procedures as a result of the pandemic. The universities had to switch to online exams when COVID-19 started. Professors at universities who had never taught online switched to this distribution method. Survival of the fittest applied. The transition to online mode was challenging for the traditionalist. For some, it was extremely intrusive to believe that you cannot see your students, but they can see you. Others, though, saw it as a chance to express themselves more creatively. Now, even the furthest- flung students could be reached. Universities are now seeking ways to fully utilise technology since it has become more important and prominent than ever before. Furthermore, as more colleges switch to digital forms of learning and evaluation, technological usage is projected to rise. Universities could use cutting-edge technology like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), which are becoming more and more relevant daily, to instruct students and experiment with new teaching methods. In conclusion, the pandemic tested both students and faculty, who are the two key stakeholders in the education sector. Even if there is still much to be determined, the Indian education industry set the bar for many emerging nations in terms of adjusting to the ‘New Normal.’ Many institutions have been taking steps to build a compassionate environment for their students, such as hiring a full-time counsellor and setting up campaigns to raise awareness of mental health issues. They could undoubtedly do more, though. Institutions of higher learning must view mental health as a requirement for academic advancement. The pandemic offered a chance to reevaluate conventional educational models and develop new transdisciplinary, long-lasting models that meet the changing demands of institutions. The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has undoubtedly created the conditions for such educational growth. It would be interesting to observe how universities and students create new paths. July 2023 34
