technology and innovation education in
Africa, it has designed a distinctive
approach to business and arts
programmes by integrating coding and
programming. Students enrolled in
these programmes have the opportunity
to acquire coding and programming
skills, enabling them to develop the
technological savvy necessary to meet
the demands of future job markets.
Academic City’s primary goal is to

quality teaching and learning. The
institution hires professors with
industry experience who are specialists
in their fields and are dedicated to
providing excellent education to
pupils. Academic City also supports
new and innovative teaching
approaches and is constantly working
to enhance its courses.
Productive Learning Experiences
The approach to teaching and learning
at Academic City is founded on four
key pillars: Experiential, Contextual,
Unified, and Extensional. These pillars
serve as the core of its educational
philosophy and drive its efforts to give
students a well-rounded and productive
learning experience.
Ÿ Experiential: Academic City
believes hands-on learning and
practical application are best for
students. It has industry-standard
workshops for this. These sessions
allow students to practice their
skills using state-of-the-art
equipment. Early exposure to real-
world dynamics in their chosen
careers is important. Academic City
also encourages early internships
for students. Internships teach them
problems by bringing Africa's
problems into the classroom.
Academic City wants youth to
comprehend Africa's unique issues.
ACity students become excellent
problem-solvers and change-
makers by integrating their studies
into real-world issues and taking
advantage of opportunities to
traverse and develop Africa.
Ÿ Extensional: Academic City
believes that learning should extend
about their chosen fields. Through
the above, students can better
understand how academic
information and abilities are
applied in practical work contexts.
Ÿ Contextual: Academic City
emphasizes real-world learning. It
highlights how students' knowledge
and talents are directly related to
Africa's current concerns. It helps

fostering a diverse and inclusive
environment where every individual
feels valued, respected, and supported.
It believes that diversity in all its
forms, including but not limited to
race, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, religion, disability, and
socio-economic background, enriches
the community and enhances the
learning and working experience for
everyone.
To achieve this, the university has
implemented several initiatives and
strategies:

spearhead their own enterprises - one
such enterprise is Goliath Robotics GH
Ltd. There, three graduates
collaborated to manufacture an electric
bicycle called the Big Mike that is able
to take riders from one point to the
other without the rider having to
paddle the bike manually. Other
enterprises include a robotics company
and the development of a 1000-egg
incubator to boost the poultry industry
in Ghana.
Outside of the industry, Academic City
graduates are also making their mark in
the field of Academia. Some graduates
have been given the opportunity to

19. he role of technology in the development of education
Tsector has been phenomenal everywhere. Ghana, the
West African nation, has seen a significant
transformation in its education sector over the years, with
technology playing a vital role. The integration of technology in
education has opened new possibilities, revolutionized teaching
and learning methods, and expanded access to quality education.
From the introduction of digital learning tools to the use of e-
learning platforms, technology's impact on education in Ghana
has been both transformative and promising.
Let's explore and delve into the various ways technology has
influenced education in Ghana, examining its benefits,
challenges, and the opportunities it presents for the future.
Advancements in Digital Learning Tools
Technology has brought a wave of advancements in digital
learning tools to Ghana's classrooms, enriching the teaching and
learning experience. Interactive whiteboards, projectors,
computers, and tablets are becoming increasingly prevalent,
especially in urban schools. These tools enhance the delivery of
lessons, making them more engaging and interactive for
students.

20. The use of digital learning resources
also allows educators to incorporate
multimedia elements, such as videos,
animations, and interactive quizzes,
into their teaching materials. This
multimedia approach caters to diverse
learning styles, enabling students to
grasp complex concepts more
effectively.
Additionally, educational apps and
software have emerged, providing
students with opportunities to learn
beyond the confines of the traditional
classroom. Mobile learning
applications enable students to access
educational content on their
smartphones, fostering a culture of
continuous learning and self-
improvement.
E-Learning Platforms and Distance
Education
One of the significant impacts of
technology on education in Ghana is
the rise of e-learning platforms and
distance education programs. E-
learning platforms, such as online
courses and virtual classrooms, have
expanded access to education beyond
geographical boundaries. Students
from remote areas can now access
high-quality education and learn from
instructors based in urban centers.
Furthermore, e-learning platforms have
become a valuable resource for adult
learners and individuals seeking
professional development. Online
courses and certification programs
offer flexible learning opportunities,
allowing individuals to enhance their
skills and employability while
balancing work and other
commitments.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Although technology's impact on
education in Ghana has been
promising, it has also highlighted the
digital divide that exists in the country.
Access to technology and the internet
is not uniform across all regions, with
rural areas facing infrastructure and
connectivity challenges.
Teacher Professional Development
Technology's impact on education in
Ghana extends to the professional
development of teachers. Educators are
encouraged to undergo training in
digital literacy and the integration of
technology in the classroom.
Workshops and training programs
equip teachers with the skills necessary
to effectively use digital learning tools
and educational software, ensuring
they remain competent in a
technology-driven educational
landscape.
Empowering Student-Centered
Learning
Technology has shifted the focus of
education from teacher-centric to
student-centred learning approaches.
With access to digital resources and e-
learning platforms, students can take
more ownership of their learning
journey. They can learn at their own
pace, access additional study materials,
and review previous lessons as needed.
Technology also facilitates
personalized learning experiences
through adaptive learning platforms.
These platforms use artificial
intelligence algorithms to assess
students' strengths and weaknesses,
tailoring content and challenges to
individual learning needs.
Challenges and Limitations
While technology has brought
significant advancements to education
in Ghana, it also faces some challenges
and limitations. The digital divide, as
mentioned earlier, remains a significant
hurdle to widespread adoption. Limited
access to electricity, computers, and the
internet in rural areas continues to
hinder the equitable integration of
technology in education.
Furthermore, some educators may be
resistant to incorporating technology in
their teaching practices due to a lack of
familiarity or training. Proper and
ongoing teacher professional
development is essential to ensure
technology is effectively utilized for
improved learning outcomes.
Another challenge is the high cost
associated with purchasing and
maintaining technology infrastructure.
Schools, especially those in low-
income areas, may struggle to fund and
sustain technology initiatives.
Opportunities for the Future
Despite the challenges, technology's
impact on education in Ghana presents
promising opportunities for the future.
With continued efforts to bridge the
digital divide, more students can access
quality education, leading to increased
literacy rates and improved
employment prospects.
Technology's impact on education in
Ghana has been transformative,
opening up new horizons and
opportunities for students and
educators alike. From the
advancements in digital learning tools
to the rise of e-learning platforms and
the potential for bridging the digital
divide, technology has the power to
revolutionize education in the country.
As technology continues to evolve, so
too will its impact on education,
shaping the learning landscape for
generations to come.

22. Maritime education holds
great significance in today's
world for several reasons.
It is vital for global trade and the
economy, as maritime transportation is
the primary means of international
trade, facilitating economic growth and
stability in any country.
Maritime education plays a crucial role
in ensuring safety and security at sea.
By imparting knowledge in navigation,
ship handling, maritime law, and
security measures, it helps prevent
accidents, piracy, smuggling, and other
maritime threats.
Maritime education promotes interna-
tional cooperation and governance. It
fosters shared understanding, harmo-
nized practices, and adherence to
international maritime laws and
conventions, contributing to maintain-
ing order, resolving disputes, and
ensuring the safety and security of the
seas.
It is safe to say that maritime education
is significant today due to its role in
supporting global trade and the
economy, ensuring safety and security,
promoting environmental
sustainability, adapting to technologi-
cal advancements, developing a skilled
workforce, and fostering international
cooperation and governance in the
maritime sector.
This high relevance and significance
generate the need for well-equipped
maritime schools that can foster ideal
individuals to serve the industry. The
Regional Maritime University aims
to foster these professionals.
One of a Kind
The Regional Maritime University is a
tertiary maritime education and
training institution established in 1958,
then named Ghana Nautical College
(GNC). In 1983, the college was
regionalized to include four West
African states, namely Ghana, Liberia,
Sierra Leone, The Gambia and one
Central African state, which is
Cameroon.
The GNC was then renamed Regional
Maritime Academy (RMA) and
accredited by the national accreditation
bodies of its five member states. In
2007, the RMA attained its university
status and was once again renamed the
Regional Maritime University.
The RMU is the only tertiary
institution not only in Ghana but in
anglophone West Africa specializing in
maritime education and training with
regional accreditation and global
recognition.
It is the only tertiary institution
specializing in maritime education and
training in Ghana accredited by
external accreditation bodies. Its
programs are skills-based, and because
of its regional nature, its certification is
globally recognized.
Fostering Ideal Professionals
RMU boasts of adequate laboratories
well equipped with relevant state-of-
the-art equipment that support
practical, experiential learning
reinforced by field trips to different
seaports in Ghana, i.e., Tema, Takoradi
and Akosombo, with a view to
enabling students to marry theoretical
learning to real-life situations.
All RMU students are trained in health
and safety, which includes swimming
and firefighting.

Traditional
Role
Role
This article delves into the role of
traditional education in Ghana,
highlighting its importance in
preserving cultural identity, promoting
community cohesion, and addressing
contemporary challenges.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Traditional education in Ghana centers
around the transfer of knowledge,
skills, and values from one generation
to the next, ensuring the preservation
of the nation's rich cultural heritage.
The
hana, located in West Africa,
Gboasts a rich cultural heritage
with a long history of
traditional education. Traditional
education, which has been an integral
part of Ghanaian society for centuries,
plays a significant role in preserving
cultural values, customs, and
knowledge passed down through
generations. While modern formal
education has expanded in the country,
traditional education continues to
coexist and contribute to the holistic
development of individuals and their
communities.
Ghana
28. Elders, known as custodians of
knowledge, play a vital role in this
process. They are responsible for
imparting knowledge about history,
customs, rituals, traditional medicine,
and the environment to the younger
generations. Through oral storytelling,
folklore, and dance, essential lessons
and moral values are conveyed,
fostering a deep sense of cultural
identity and belonging among
Ghanaians.
One critical aspect of traditional
education is its emphasis on communal
values and respect for authority.
Children are taught the importance of
obedience to their elders and the
significance of communal
responsibilities, which are fundamental
aspects of Ghanaian society. By
preserving these cultural values,
traditional education contributes to the
social cohesion and stability of
communities.
Complementing Formal Education
While formal education systems have
become prevalent in Ghana,
particularly in urban areas, traditional
education continues to coexist and
complements modern schooling.
Formal education provides skills
necessary for modern life and the job
market, but it may not always
adequately address local customs and
values. Traditional education, on the
other hand, fills this gap by instilling
pride in one's cultural heritage and
connecting individuals with their roots.
In many rural areas of Ghana, where
access to formal education is limited,
traditional education remains the
primary mode of learning. It equips
students with practical skills for
agriculture, craftsmanship, and other
traditional livelihoods, which are
crucial for their survival and economic
well-being. The combination of formal
and traditional education systems
ensures a well-rounded and culturally
aware Ghanaian populace.
Promoting Community Cohesion
One of the most significant
contributions of traditional education
lies in its role in fostering community
cohesion. Traditional educational
settings often involve communal
learning spaces, where children and
adults gather to acquire knowledge and
participate in cultural activities
together. This form of education
reinforces the sense of community and
cooperation among members,
promoting a collective responsibility
for the well-being of the group.
In these settings, older community
members act as mentors, guiding and
advising the younger ones on various
aspects of life. This intergenerational
interaction helps bridge the gap
between generations and contributes to
the social fabric of the community.
Additionally, the sense of belonging
and interconnectedness nurtured by
traditional education enhances social
harmony and cooperation, which are
essential for community development.
Addressing Contemporary
Challenges
Despite its many merits, traditional
education faces challenges in the face
of modernization, globalization, and
technological advancements. As
younger generations are increasingly
exposed to external influences, there is
a risk of losing the traditional
knowledge and practices that have
sustained Ghanaian communities for
centuries.
To address this challenge, efforts have
been made to incorporate elements of
traditional education into formal
curricula. Integrating Ghanaian history,
folklore, and cultural practices into
school programs helps preserve and
promote traditional knowledge among
the youth. By doing so, the value and
relevance of traditional education are
reinforced, encouraging young
Ghanaians to appreciate their cultural
heritage while embracing modern
advancements.
Furthermore, traditional educational
practices, such as community decision-
making processes and conflict
resolution methods, offer valuable
insights into addressing contemporary
challenges. The spirit of consensus-
building and mediation inherent in
traditional education can be applied to
contemporary issues such as land
disputes, resource management, and
social conflicts, promoting sustainable
development and peace within
Ghanaian communities.
Making the Difference
Traditional education plays a vital role
in Ghana's cultural identity, social
cohesion, and sustainable
development. By preserving cultural
heritage, complementing formal
education, fostering community
cohesion, and addressing contemporary
challenges, traditional education
continues to be a valuable asset for
Ghanaian society. As the country
progresses and modernizes, it is
essential to strike a balance between
preserving traditional practices and
embracing the benefits of formal
education and technology. By doing so,
Ghana can maintain its unique cultural
heritage while progressing towards a
prosperous and inclusive future.

30. Education stands as a fundamental pillar in the
process of a nation's development. Without the
widespread dissemination of quality educational
opportunities, significant progress and advancement
become unattainable for any country. Ensuring universal
access to education is vital, as it serves as a crucial resource
for driving national growth.
The availability of quality education addresses long-term
challenges faced by a country, paving the way for sustain-
able development. Ghana, a nation that has demonstrated
remarkable strides in enhancing the quality of education,
exemplifies this principle.
Ghana's remarkable achievements in education have
contributed to poverty reduction and impressive economic
growth. This success can be attributed to the concerted
efforts of its educational institutions, which have reshaped
the educational landscape of the nation.
In this regard, Spiritan University College has emerged as
a distinguished institution over the past three decades.
Through its dedication and commitment, Spiritan Univer-
sity College has played a pivotal role in revolutionizing
Ghanaian education, making significant contributions to the
nation's progress.
Laying the Foundation of an Ideal Institution
Spiritan University College started as an institution of
Philosophy to provide the first stage of Catholic priestly and
missionary formation uniquely to candidates of the
Congregation of the Holy Spirit (a.k.a Spiritans). It was
th
opened on 17 October 1990, and the foundation stone was
laid by Very Rev. Fr. Pierre Haas, C.S.Sp. and blessed by
the Most Rev. Peter Kwasi Sarpong (then Bishop of the
Catholic Diocese of Kumasi).
The College was accredited by the National Accreditation
th
Board on 25 September 2005.

On 20 June 2008, the University College status was
inaugurated with two programmes, i.e., Bachelor of Arts
(BA) in Sociology/Economics and Diploma in Philosophy
and Religious Studies, introduced in September 2008.
In 2011, the College started a School of Business Studies
and later, in 2015, was accredited to run a Master of Arts
(MA) in Theology, affiliated with Duquesne University in
the United States of America.
The College also got an offer for a Bachelor of Education
(B.Ed.) degree from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in
April 2016 and was accredited by the Ghana Tertiary
Education Council (GTEC).
Leading Students to Discover Wisdom
The vision of the University College is to be an academy of
excellence in research and the teaching of African Philoso-
phy. Students are also taught the human condition, which
helps them make an informed decision about and preferen-
tially opt to commit themselves to the service of the poor
and marginalized in society.
The motto of the University College is Spiritus Veritatis
(Spirit of truth). The whole purpose of education is to lead
one to discover truth and wisdom. It aims to facilitate the
development, assessment and enrichment of curricula in the
College and to ensure academic integrity, stringent policies
and procedures are implemented.

32. The strength of Spiritan University stems from its solid
religious foundation and discipline given by the Religious
Missionary Institute, the Congregation of the Holy Spirit,
made up of priests and brothers.
One of its biggest strengths is the attainment of academic
excellence by both faculty and student membership.
Honesty, Transparency and the Fear of God are three key
pillars of the Institution. The governance architecture of the
institution ensures strict adherence to rules and regulations.
Goals set by the institution are achieved through well-laid-
out systems.
The institution maintains its reputation by abiding by the
rules set by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and
GTEC.
The institution cultivates in students’ democratic principles
and also lets them feel part of the decision-making process,
as well as ensures effective implementation of policies. In
addition, students’ participation in certain areas of the
governance system of the Institution is encouraged.
Students have Academic Advisers, and they meet with them
periodically. They also consult them before choosing
courses each semester. They also have access to the Dean of
Students.
The students also take part in programmes organised by
Private Universities in Ghana. Such programmes include
quiz/debate competitions, sports, etc.
The majority of students who are training to be priests
participate in the annual Inter-Seminary Interactions among
all the major seminaries in the country. This involves sports
competitions and festivals of arts and culture. The institu-
tion will host the next interaction (Festival of Arts and
Culture) in February 2024.
Overcoming Social Adversities
th
Recently, the institution successfully organized the 4
International Conference on the Church and the Global
Eradication of Ignorance and Poverty in Africa. This
International Conference on Poverty Management
(INCOPOMA) is held annually to broaden the minds of
students, faculty and the general public on emerging issues
and trends as they affect and shape all aspects of life.
The research component of academic work is central to
each taught course. This finds expression in term papers,
seminar presentations and debates in each course done per
semester. Each student, whether as an individual or in
group, is expected to make a contribution.
Aside from this, the annual Insight Magazine features well-
researched articles which are published as institutions’
literary contributions to contextual issues not only in
Ghanaian and African societies but the entire globe. This is
facilitated by the multi-nationality of the presence of both
faculty and students who form an international consortium
from different religious and missionary congregations.
Additionally, each student, under the tutelage of distin-
guished supervisors, is required to produce a well-
researched project work before completion of the bachelor’s
degree and subsequent graduation. Furthermore, at the end
of each academic year, students are given appraisal forms to
assess each course and each lecturer. This helps to enhance
quality assurance and control.
Creating a Congenial Atmosphere
The institutions’ internationality, borne out of multicultural-
ism, already creates a congenial atmosphere for cross-
cultural engagements. The different talents and skills from
these diverse backgrounds are tapped not only in academics
but also in sports, art and culture and liturgy. Basically,
students and faculty members come from Ghana, Nigeria,
Togo, Benin, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Cameroon,
Senegal, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia and
Guinea Bissau.
The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the
university is an umbrella body which brings students from
different countries together for a common purpose, namely,
to work for the interests and well-being of all students.
Also, the president of the SRC always participates in the
Academic Board meetings.
The school’s management also creates a one-on-one
platform for students to share their ideas, grievances and
concerns at the beginning of every academic year.
The institution is affiliated with KNUST, UCC and UDS
and currently trying to seek approval from GTEC in order
to enroll on the BSc—Nursing and Midwifery programmes.
Prioritizing Moral Responsibilities
The institution has scholarships for those in need in the
community, which helps the deprived and needy to have
access to tertiary education and to enrol in any course of
their choice.

33. It also provides outreach programmes, such as
Clean-Up Campaigns as well as, Quiz Competitions,
and Extra and Vacation Classes for Senior High
School students. From time to time, the institution
organises Blood Donations to support the blood
banks of various hospitals so as to offer medical
support to sick patients.
Coexisting in the Context of Diversity
Spiritan University College can boast of a vibrant
Alumni Association with a recent constitution
which guides its administration and activities. A
database of all the alums, their profiles and
locations, and work and present engagements is
also kept. The Alumni Executives and some other
members of the Alumni are always present for
matriculations and graduations, and the Alumni
Association President serves on the Governing
Council of the University College.
The graduates in Philosophy and Social Sciences
have gone further to study theology and related
courses; some are ordained and are working as
priests and missionaries in many parts of the world
(e.g., USA, Paraguay, Taiwan, Croatia, Ireland,
Canada, UK, Africa, etc) and other religious
institutes of consecrated life participate e.g.
Missionaries of Africa, Redemptorists and
Josephites. Others are pursuing careers in law,
political sciences, social work, accounting, human
resource management, etc.
Others are working as entrepreneurs and in the
banking sector, as well as the Metropolitan,

Municipal and District Assemblies scattered around the
country.
The programmes offered here, course contents and course
delivery, as well as community engagements, extra-curricular
activities and religious formation, equip its students with
multi-talents. This enables them to multi-task and face the
outside world beyond the four walls of the school with
confidence, courage, initiative, innovation and entrepreneur-
ship.
Again, internationality easily makes students adjust to
different situations, and they are able to accommodate and
coexist in the context of diversity and global challenges.
