1. Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media?
When gathering secondary research from the UK Film Council, I found
that demographics for my selected main target audience. This gave me
the statistics that defined my ideal target audience to be women under
35, men over 35 without children, the vast majority being either upper
or lower class. This demographic gives me a broad spectrum to target
my film at.
After gathering secondary
research from The UK Film council
I looked at the Box Office statistics which highlighted that I have
a lot of interest for my selected genre as 35% of audiences
enjoyed viewing dramas.
However…
This selected demographic suits my film as it contains the age that it targets are commonly the most
likely to have strong views about related subjects to topics involved in my film. My film isn’t
necessarily a film viewers would commonly watch for the sake of watching, it is for people who are
looking for psychological or emotional challenge/ involvement within their movie.
This is why my film I think targets older
viewers which can range from a
conventional 21- 52 year old male/
female or if an unconventional person
can stem from as young from
16+(obviously BBFC age ratings restrict
viewers that are younger)
As my film isn’t designed to a specific gender it
makes it very hard to define whom would be the most likely to watch it. Generic gender conventions
would tell me that females would be more suited to my piece due to the use of small children and
the dramatic elements of this piece. However this statistic cannot be applied to all audiences
especially ones for niche audiences like mine.
The main underlying factor of my piece is that it is more definitely targeted to a more educated
audience. This can raise the matter of class and ethnicity but in all fairness, small elements like that
don’t completely restrict certain groups from watching. Through my primary research I gathered
that my target audience was most likely to be more intellectual when I conducted interviews with
2. my Target Audience. This helped me because I knew that I could
contain content later in the film that most mainstream audiences
may find “too much” but as my audience as a wide spectrum of
literate they would have most likely read novels on the same/similar
topics.
I have chosen this type of audience because it is easier to present matter darker matters and push
boundaries with them. As my audience is more knowledgeable it is easier to approach them with
subjects and themes that may seem brass to other mainstream groups, allowing a director to touch
on issues shunned by the mass public and not brought to order.
