1. WHO WOULD BE THE TARGET
AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT?
2. • The target audience for my opening sequence was females from
the age of 15-19 who enjoy the drama genre. Even though this is
a small demographic compared to other films, I feel I can attract
this demographic most. However, this would impact my
company's overall earnings significantly. The reason I chose this
demographic for my target audience was because of previous
tasks I had completed. These tasks involved researching into the
drama genre. I found from this that my friends who are female
and vary from this age enjoy the drama genre more than any
other genre. I also enjoy watching drama films myself and fall
into this age category, so I thought it would be more enjoyable
when creating the opening sequence, and because of this I had
a good understanding of the genre. Furthermore, I know that
stereotypically younger females enjoy watching drama films. An
example of this would be The Titanic which had a demographic
similar to mine. This is because of the hard-hitting storylines and
relatable content which allows them to engage and sympathise
with the protagonists.
3. • When conducting my research, I did an interview based on the
film 'The Notebook' and also an interview based around the
drama genre in general. In these interviews, I asked five of my
friends to be involved and knew that they enjoyed watching
drama films because of previous conversations I had with them
about my media task. I also knew they enjoyed the drama genre
because of the responses I received. For example, one of the
responses I received when asking ‘from my research, I have
found drama films are popular, why do you think they are?' was
‘it's easy to understand the events in drama films'. I was also
received other responses which made it obvious that they enjoy
watching the drama genre. From this, I was able to see that a
younger audience who are females (all of my responders were
female) enjoy watching the drama genre. The reason as to why I
only asked females was due to the gender divide at my college. I
am one of the few males who attend my college as it is an all-
girls school. However, because of this, I was influenced to make
this age group and gender the audience for my product.
4. • After concluding these results, I wanted my film to apply to the
responses I was given from my interviews. This was so my target
audience would enjoy watching my film. From this, I decided it
was most important if my film was realistic and relatable. The
audience tasks helped me to understand what drama fans like to
see when watching drama films and to also to decide on my
audience. I was able to see from my second audience task that a
younger audience enjoys watching the drama genre. From my
survey, I was able to identify that not all adults enjoy watching
the drama genre. For example, from my survey, I found that
about 20% of respondents said that they don't enjoy watching
drama films (which also involved males). From my research, I
feel that this is because stereotypically men prefer genres which
include violence and crime related content. This contrasts to my
second audience task where all respondents were either 16 or
17 and females. In this audience task, they spoke highly about
the drama genre. Because of this and because of stereotypes I
feel I am entitled to state that my product would be more
attractive for a younger, female audience.
