Evaluation Part 4 and 5: Audience Identification and Appeal
1.
2. TARGET AUDIENCE – GENDER AND AGE
Using primary research such as questionnaires, I discovered that the
audience for
psychological thrillers was male dominated. I expected this as it is
stereotypical of
males to prefer these films to females.
In the same questionnaire we found that the age range for these films were
‘young
adults’ to ‘middle/late’. This gave the hybrid genre I decided on a large
audience pool.
I therefore came to the decision that the age range would be 15-45 year
olds. This
giving the age certificate as 15+.
3. TARGET AUDIENCE - GENRE
As well as the specific ages and gender, the target audience would enjoy
films of the
psychological, thriller sci-fi and horror genres. Their interests would be
films which
make them question certain themes of the narrative. The audience would
like to form
social topics on film which have questionable endings and narratives. They
would also
actively seek to be entertained and to escape the daily grind of work.
4. TARGET AUDIENCE – SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC
GROUPING
The socio demographic grouping for the film would be from category A to
C2. I
decided this as the film requires the audience to be actively questioning the
plot and
working out certain themes. Therefore these groups reflect my film well as
they
watch films that need full concentration in contrast to comedies where
concentration
isn't needed.
5. GRATIFICATIONS
To attract the target audience I included a variety of gratifications that
would
entertain and excite audiences. Throughout the opening sequence of my
film I have
used enigma coding to attract the audience. In the opening the audience is
shown a
combination of blurred and close up shots of the antagonist. I used this to
engage the
audience as it will leaving wanting to know who the character and therefore
actively
looking to watch the rest of the film.
This enigma coding I have used relates to the uses and gratifications
theory as the
audience is looking to be entertained as they do not know who the
character is and
want to find out. Again it also relates as the enigma around the antagonist
could draw
up a talking point, relating to social interaction.
6. PLEASURES
Richard Dyers utopian solutions theory states that audiences view media in
order to
find solutions and escape from usual mundane activities. The film opening I
have
created allows audiences to directly relate to the main character. The ability
for the
audience to relate to the character allows them to place themselves within
the
narrative of the film and also get a further understanding of it. To
emphasise this to
the audience I used a multitude of POV (point of view) shots which places
them within
the film. To enhance this entertainment aspect for the audience I used a
narrative
and setting that juxtaposed the reliability of the character. This will allow
the
audiences to place themselves within a setting which they have no
experience of,
enhancing their viewing experience.
7. NEEDS
From Maslow's theory of needs I focused on esteem and self- actualization.
The film I
created focused on problem solving and achievement. The enigma shots
and themes
I used made the audience try and ‘solve’ the problem of who the antagonist
was. The
achievement would come from the audience successfully working out who
this
character was. This achievement however did not come across in my piece
as it was
only an opening sequence.
