4. What is work at height?
Work at height is work in any place,
including a place at, above or
below ground level, where a person
could be injured if they fell from that place
Any work at height of 1.8 meter or more
from the ground level or floor.
Work there is a risk of a fall liable to cause
Personal injury.

5. Risk Assessment
Examples of what to consider include:
• The work activity
• Equipment to be used
• Location of the work and any hazards
• Working environment (weather, lighting)
• Condition of existing work surfaces
• Duration of the work
• Physical capabilities of workers

6. Organization, Planning, Competence
The Law Work at Height Regulations 2005
Work at height should be:
• Properly planned
• Appropriately supervised
• Not carried out if weather conditions jeopardize health and
safety
• Buddy System
Those working at height should be:
• Competent or if being trained
• Supervised by a competent person
• Choose right equipment to-
 PREVENT FALLS, REDUCE INJURY

9. Precautions
• Wear full body harness with 2 lanyard
• 100% tie off
• Guard rails & toe boards
• Working platform shall be inspected and tag shall be
available
• Tool lanyard for tools
• Don’t store unwanted materials at height
• Select the Proper PPE.
• Inspect Your PPE.
• Self inspect before using of any scaffold
• Never use scaffolds that do not have a proper guardrail system installed

10. Precautions
 Use safety net to avoid any injury after falling
For man Safety net hole 100mm and rope 8 mm
For material Safety net hole 25 mm outline rope 12 mm
 Gin wheel for material shifting from platform- 750 mm

11. The Regulations Hierarchy
 AVOID work at height if you can
 PREVENT falls by using the proper gear, such as scaffolds or cherry pickers
 MINIMISE the chances of being hurt if you fall
 Applies even to small, quick jobs
 Doing nothing is dangerous and illegal

12. Select the right gear
Think about
• Where you are going to be working (ground conditions, space, public)
• How far you could fall and how likely you are to be injured
• How long will the job take and how often will it need to be done
• What you need to do to rescue someone should they fall
• Can the building or scaffold etc take the weight
of the workforce and materials need for the job
• Is it the best piece of kit for the job

13. Prevent Falls
• Use an existing or ‘safe’ place of work where
no additional measures are required
• Use working platforms with guardrails or
powered access platforms

15. Other things to think about
Prevent tools and materials falling:
 Throwing materials or debris (bombing) never acceptable
 Warn employees about danger areas
 You need to make sure that equipment such as scaffolds are checked
 After assembly or installation
 At suitable intervals or after exceptional circumstances
 Scaffold and tower scaffold inspection in each new position and then every 7
days
 MEWP on site within previous 7 days

• Lack of knowledge about work at height procedure

18. The Roof:
A Risky Place To Be Before Working on Roofs:-
• Fragile materials should be identified
and precautions decided
• Roof edge barriers (or scaffolds) must
be erected to prevent people and materials
falling
• Access ladders must be a safe distance
above the stepping-off point and must be
secured
• Where access ladders rise above 9 meters
a safe intermediate platform must be provided

19. The Roof:
A Risky Place To Be Before Working on Roofs:-
• If you can fall more than 2 meters, guardrails
and toe boards must be erected
• Hazards resulting from adverse weather conditions
must be anticipated, and suitable precautions taken
• Wet windy or Icy weather can seriously affect safety
• Sheet materials including asbestos cement or skylights Will
not support weight
• Walking the bolts not acceptable

20. Scaffolds
• Workers must have a safe way
to access the scaffold.
• Don’t Short cut.
• Never use blocks,
bricks, walk boards,
and other unsafe
methods to access
a scaffold.

22. Ladder Safety
Always:
 Using both hands to keep a safe grip.
 Face ladder when going up or down.
 Never climb a ladder while carrying any materials.
 Maintain three points of contact with the ladder
at all times
 Maintain the center line of your body between
the ladder’s vertical support rails while working
 Check bottom of shoes and ladder rungs
for grease and dirt

• PFAS (personal fall arrest system) has only

• Accident occur 80-85% due to unsafe act and
15-20% by unsafe condition
• Fall arrestor only can help after fall
• Don’t write anything on harness
• Only 4 finger gaps allowed in harness strap
• Chest buckle shall be 6 inches from nose
• Shock absorber reducing fall arresting force 65-80%
• Rescue the person within 20 minutes only

if there is a red tag

then use scaffold

30. What not to do…
• Do not let untrained employees work at height.
• Do not provide untested or expired PPE to your employees.
• Prevent employees from starting the
work if they do not wear the appropriate
PPE for the job.
• Do not store PPE outside or in direct sunlight.
• Do not use fall protection PPE if it is damaged.

31. What not to do…
• Even writing on a harness with marker can damage the
webbing.
• Do not allow employees to use PPE
that doesn’t fit them properly
• Do not use equipment that has been
involved in a fall without it being
inspected by a competent person.

32. Mobile Eelevated work platforms
• Do not operate without pre-use inspection and
unless you are trained
• Check condition of tires, toe boards and guardrails,
• Look for leaking hydraulic fluids
• Look out for overhead obstructions
such as power cables,
• Other equipment or
personnel near-by

33. Mobile Eelevated work platforms
• Only use on firm level ground
• Always wear a safety harness
secured to the platform by lanyard.
• Safety means staying in the basket
and not climbing on the guardrails
• Place barricades and warning
signs around the planned working radius

of travel and at creep speed and only equipment
is designed to allow this.
