THE MAKING OF OUR
FILM POSTER
SOFTWARE (PHOTOSHOP)
We will be using Adobe Photoshop CC 2015, as our main
editing software for making our film poster. We have chosen
this over InDesign, as we have more experience and
understanding of this software and believe it can benefit the
quality of our poster. Also we can use a variety of tools on
Photoshop to raise the quality of the film poster by, adding
text, adjusting the lighting, using the opacity tool on an
image to create a ghostly look and to adjust the colour
balance. Furthermore, this will increase the quality of our
film poster and give it a more professional edge. We have
researched Photoshop techniques which could boost the
quality of the finished image of the film poster.
THE MESSAGE OF THE FILM
There are many messages that a film poster can connote, and
it is crucial that we portray the right one. We can portray
messages by using semiology, which I have explained in a
previous PowerPoint. The main messages of our film is about
forgiveness, love and loss/death. We want to hint that the
protagonist may be a spiritual/ghostly character, which we can
represent, by using the likes of costume, make up, semiology,
Mise en Scene, body language and Photoshop. Another
message we could portray in the film, is the loss of David’s
daughter and the emotional scarring.
CONVENTIONS OF A FILM POSTER
There are many codes and conventions how a film poster should
be made for example, there should be a main image which
follows the rule of thirds, so its placement is pleasing to the eye
and looks central to the framing. The main image should be
made eye catching so it stands out and is appealing to passers
by. This may have a member of cast in the film, usually the
protagonists and may be taking in front of relevant background, in
association to the film. These images may be stills, like actions
shots taken directly from the film and edited, or they could be a
character profiled shot. This image normally reveals the genre of
the film and leaves the viewer with an insight of what the films
narrative may hold. Also a title should be placed either at the top
or bottom of the image and central, to follow the codes and
conventions.
A GHOSTLY IMAGE
We would like to present the protagonist in a ghostly/spirit like
manner, to make her look abnormal and show connotations of a
ghost, without giving too much of the narrative away. We would have
her in costume which is a white dress, connoting innocence and a
ghostly figure. We would also have our main character wear light
make up, instead of wearing an orange tone of foundation, we would
like her skin to look very pale. This is because we would like to
connote that she is ill and cold, like she has been on the moors for a
long time. We’d like her hair to be wavy, as it is windy on the moors so
she would look a little windswept when Richard spots her. Eve’s
character will also be wearing skin colour tights, to make her legs look
pale and so they can be ripped, to make it look like she has been up
on the moors for a long time, trying to get home along with her white
dress. Lastly, to connote the ghostly image we can make the image of
the girl more transparent on Photoshop, instead of having a solid
block image.
GOOD TECHNIQUES
There are many good techniques and ideas that can make our film
poster a good quality, such as reducing the opacity of the image of
Eve on Photoshop. This is a simple, yet effective technique that
may improve the quality of the film poster. Shooting this in front of a
real background, instead of editing one in, such as the moors may
look more effective as this is the actual location of filming, which
may improve the continuity of the work. Also, we decided against
using an action shot taken from the film and editing the image, as
we thought it would be a better idea to take a posed image and
have a sketch of what we would like as a poster. This is more
beneficial to us, as we can use more semiology in the poster, which
eventually would give the audience hints as to what the genre of
the film is and can introduce the protagonist better as we would
use semiology to describe her characteristics more.

A GHOSTLY IMAGE We would like to present the protagonist in a ghostly/spirit like manner, to make her look abnormal and show connotations of a ghost, without giving too much of the narrative away. We would have her in costume which is a white dress, connoting innocence and a ghostly figure. We would also have our main character wear light make up, instead of wearing an orange tone of foundation, we would like her skin to look very pale. This is because we would like to connote that she is ill and cold, like she has been on the moors for a long time. We’d like her hair to be wavy, as it is windy on the moors so she would look a little windswept when Richard spots her. Eve’s character will also be wearing skin colour tights, to make her legs look pale and so they can be ripped, to make it look like she has been up on the moors for a long time, trying to get home along with her white dress. Lastly, to connote the ghostly image we can make the image of the girl more transparent on Photoshop, instead of having a solid block image.
  • 6. GOOD TECHNIQUES There are many good techniques and ideas that can make our film poster a good quality, such as reducing the opacity of the image of Eve on Photoshop. This is a simple, yet effective technique that may improve the quality of the film poster. Shooting this in front of a real background, instead of editing one in, such as the moors may look more effective as this is the actual location of filming, which may improve the continuity of the work. Also, we decided against using an action shot taken from the film and editing the image, as we thought it would be a better idea to take a posed image and have a sketch of what we would like as a poster. This is more beneficial to us, as we can use more semiology in the poster, which eventually would give the audience hints as to what the genre of the film is and can introduce the protagonist better as we would use semiology to describe her characteristics more.
