1. How effective is the combination
of your main product and the
ancillary texts?
2. Introduction
For our film, we decided to create a psychological thriller that had some
elements of horror in it (this was added through the situation our film is
based around). Our film shows how a terrifying situation could affect two
people with a connected past – that connected past not being a positive
one. The film focuses on one of the girls, who is kidnapped by someone
stronger than herself – this is a scary concept for her, as she is the one
usually in control (shown through her being a bully) – and put in an almost
impossible situation.
We created a thrilling story, that combined elements of thriller, horror and
drama to create a short film. We achieved this through the use of props,
costumes, script, and editing. The scene that helped put everything into
context, the flashback scene, was especially effective at adding drama and
horror to our film. The strong female characters are relatable, especially to
a female audience, and the film can attract an audience through the story
and action scenes.
3. Film Poster
With advertising, one aspect we focused on was the film poster. We each created a film poster
individually, and then I designed a film poster where everyone in the group made some
suggestions that I applied to the final piece. This final poster was inspired by the poster for
the film “The Seasoning House”.
The colour variation on the poster was done so that the poster would fit into psychological
thriller conventions – the yellow tint could suggest sickness, or that something isn't quite
right. Another filter was put on the poster to make the character's skin stand out and look
dirty, to suggest that she has been somewhere for a long time, possibly trapped. Also, a
slight darkness that fades into the main image has been added at the top and bottom of the
page. This was for artistic affect and to also add to the feeling of the character being
trapped. Fear can be seen from the character because of her position, almost fetal even
though she is sat straight up. This juxtaposes the character's personality in the film, as she is
shown as being angry and cocky – this is a front, the poster reveals exactly how the
character is feeling; terrified. There is also a prop placed in the poster, a knife, to add to the
mystery of the film – is the character in the poster going to use the knife or has she used it
already? Why is there a knife there?
The font for the credits of the poster, SteelTongs, had to be downloaded from the internet, as it
is not a preset font on Photoshop Elements, or any other programme (like Microsoft Word).
We made the font white so that it would stand out but not take away from the main image
of the girl. The text for the title, slogan and reviews is read so that it stands out slightly more
from everything else, but not take away from the poster's image. We decided to add the
slogan “Kill or Be Killed” to add more context, and then we decided to add reviews so that
the film would become more enticing.
4. Radio Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf4g0XIae9E
Radio trailers are a good way to advertise films as they only require audio from a film – the lack of
actual footage can sometimes work to your advantage because the audio by itself can be very
interesting to a potential audience as there is hardly any context given; the audio makes it so
that the audience will seek out the context, creating further interest in the film being
advertised.
We created a 30 second radio trailer to widen our audience and gain more publicity/attention. The
trailer consisted of audio from our film and a voice-over. We only used the exciting audio from
our film – the lines that were intriguing and thrilling. This was because we needed audio that
would attract a potential audience, and to attract an audience you need a hook. In this case,
thrilling dialogue was the hook. For the voice-over, we used a Zoom recorder to get clear audio.
The voice-over says lines that will entice the audience and also gives hints as to what the film is
about – even though less context is good for a radio trailer, there needs to be some or else the
film could be perceived as being messy.
To add atmosphere that resembles that of psychological thriller/ horror, we used music from our
film. The music adds the right atmosphere but it also gives the audience a theme to identify our
film by. Because the music has been heard in the trailer, it will be instantly recognised by an
audience when it emerges in the film, thus creating a known theme.
5. Our Ancillary Texts
I believe that with the addition of our poster and radio trailer,
we have demonstrated further our creativity. Creating a
poster on Photoshop Elements allowed us to explore more of
the advertising side of media, along with creating our radio
trailer.
Posters and radio trailers are effective ways of reaching an
audience. Our poster and radio trailer are effective and help
advertise our main selling point – a psychological thriller film.
In conclusion, our ancillary texts are fit for purpose and fit our
target audience. They also don't spoil the film; they only give
a small amount of information to entice the audience, which
is what an affective ancillary text should do.
