In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products? <ul><li>Our thriller incorporates generic conventions by creating the mystery of what’s going to happen within the plot, but also confirms what type of events are coming up. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>The thriller develops these conventions by going with some thrillers and not showing who the antagonist is and by not showing what his intentions are. But, it challenges these conventions by showing that there is an antagonist from the beginning (in the shot to the right). </li></ul>

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products? <ul><li>The use of conventions indicates that the film '28 Days Later' has influenced the piece as the use of shots like point of view shots, without revealing who's looking at the character, this creates a sense of mystery and a feeling that the audience is looking in on the situation that the lead character is in, is what my group wanted to recreate in our project. But, we found that we could not use some of these shots as they were hard to do with the equipment we had at the time. </li></ul>

How does your media product represent particular social groups? <ul><li>The social groups represented in our project are young, white males aged 18 or over.  </li></ul><ul><li>In the piece, gender is represented in a stereotypical way but it has a twist. We had a stereotypical, dominant businessman. </li></ul><ul><li>So this businessman comes into unfamiliar territory </li></ul><ul><li>and his role suddenly changes to passive once he's </li></ul><ul><li>lost control of the situation he finds himself in. </li></ul><ul><li>This links to the target audience as it includes someone as the lead character in the age range of the target audience, so the audience can relate to the character and be more involved when watching the piece. </li></ul>

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? <ul><li>The final product could be something produced by a major Hollywood studio as it has a similar storyline to what would be produced in a Hollywood studio, but Hollywood wouldn’t be interested in the thriller as it isn’t as eventful as things produced by Hollywood studios usually are. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>The piece would be more likely to be an internet only release as it is aimed at an audience who has a wide knowledge of the internet, so it would be cheaper to distribute and would be easier for the audience to access. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>It would be released as it offers opportunities for a sequel and perhaps merchandising if it because extremely popular with the general public. </li></ul><ul><li>The mise en scene of the thriller is important as things like the deserted farm setting with the empty feel to it, the empty country roads and the costume of our main character makes it obvious to the audience that he isn't used to being in farm type surroundings and it hints that he may not be able to cope well. </li></ul>

Who would be the audience for your media product? <ul><li>The target audience that the piece is aimed at is likely to be a mostly male audience from aged about 18 or above, this is as it has a male lead character so they can relate and perhaps put themselves into his shoes and get the full experience of our thriller. </li></ul><ul><li>Other films that are similar to the finished product is probably '28 Days Later' again as it appeals to the same audience as our thriller does, which is ages 18 over. </li></ul><ul><li>It could be distressing and slightly scare the </li></ul><ul><li>younger audiences as it includes shots like </li></ul><ul><li>when the lead character is being watched, </li></ul><ul><li>this can be classed as scary for the younger </li></ul><ul><li>audiences. </li></ul>

How did you attract/address your audience? <ul><li>If there are particular points in the thriller that may terrify a certain age of the audience it would be the younger audiences that are about 14 or under as it could scare them as some of the shots can be classed as scary like they were intended to be, for example the point of view shot looking at the car going down the road with the over exposed light effect on the car could possibly scare audiences of a younger age. </li></ul><ul><li>The camera techniques used are point of view shots, like when the antagonist is looking at the car passing on the road to create the mystery of what's to come, a long/medium shot when the character goes into the deserted barn to emphasize how alone he is in the situation, a close up on the main characters face to show the expression when he reacts to the shutter coming down and how his body language is when he falls to the floor when he starts having his flashbacks. </li></ul>

How did you attract/address your audience? <ul><li>The audience is asked to place themselves in the position of the protagonist in the footage, so they could relate to how he feels when he becomes trapped in the barn with no escape. Also, in one shot the audience is asked to place themselves in the position of the antagonist as he is watching the protagonist through the tree branches. This creates a link with audience and the lead character as the protagonist is represented as a normal successful businessman, this then creates a kind of emotional </li></ul><ul><li>bond so they feel closer to the character. </li></ul>

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? <ul><li>A strength of the camera equipment is that we were able to create certain shots that were detailed and easy to create once we had figured out how to do it simply like the shot where we filmed the lead character driving up to the camera and then the camera quickly moving round to film the protagonist getting out of the car, we thought this would be hard to do but it as simple as we used the tripod to balance out the shot as it would have been too shaky if we didn't use it. </li></ul><ul><li>A weakness of the camera equipment was it was hard to get specific shots as it would have been to blurry if we had done them, like we wanted to do a specific shot of the character when he was driving but we had to keep it pretty simple due to it being blurry. </li></ul><ul><li>During the filming process, the main problems we faced was in the scene where our character walks into the barn it was too bright behind him to see his face and what he was looking at. We resolved this by adjusting the light on the camera and also adjusted it on Final Cut Express so it's bright in the background but you can see the character. </li></ul>

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? <ul><li>From editing on Final Cut Express, I have learnt that cut the film clips together, shorten the clip and how to edit things like flashes into the piece. This was useful to learn so I know how to edit this into the clip in the future. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>For Garageband, it was a useful program to create our soundtrack with different effects and sounds from, but we ended up not using the soundtrack and using a song for most of our audio section of the project. </li></ul>

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? <ul><li>During the planning stage we started with researching thrillers, we looked at multiple films within the thriller genre and compared them with each other to extract the specific elements of mise en scene that makes a thriller. The next stage we went through was story boarding, this is where we drew pictures to show what we would be filming in the next process, we drew the pictures with scene number, lighting effect, timings and sounds effects/songs that we were going to do. Then, we did some detailed planning that helped us to figure out how we were going to film some shots, for example we didn't know how to get footage of the protagonist's face when he was leaning on the shutter, but we then figured that we were going to just have the camera in front of him and he's pretending to lean against the shutter. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The use of specific shots has improved as the shot where the antagonist was watching the protagonist has been improved as we used the camera like a stedicam with the light distortion so it's like the character is being watched and it also makes the audience feel uneasy, this gives a hint to what's about to happen within the footage. </li></ul></ul>

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?   <ul><li>Personally I feel more confident with the equipment as before I was inexperienced with the equipment and didn't know what I was doing, but now I have gotten used to it and now know how to use it, even if I don't have expert knowledge on it. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>I feel that our end product is quite successful as fulfilling the task as it fulfills the aspects of what a thriller is and it also fills what the thriller audience really wants which is described by our questionnaire research, for example they wanted a brave protagonist and we have a protagonist that wanders into the unknown in search for help and he gets into situations where he may or may not be able to get out of. </li></ul>
