A landslide vote went to
escapism being the most
important aspect of a film.
This makes it clear that our
demographic wants to be
removed from reality when they
watch a film .
The second most important
aspect of a film is humour to this
same demographic.
Psychographic Analysis
‘After Hours’ aims to achieve both of these gratification requests and,
in fact, escapism is a main theme of the short film. Don, just like the
target audience, aims to escape from the reality of his mundane life
and this concept of escapism is physically exemplified when he is
trapped in the school with no means of escape. It is through the use
of humour and the gratification of happiness that allows Don to
accept his reality.
7. My questionnaire revealed that my target audience relate to these characters in film:
Psychographic Analysis
It is interesting that all of these characters have similar personality traits:
Individuality – all of these characters tend to spend most of their time alone in the film, or
equally seem to suffer alone due to the incapability to fit into mainstream society. For
Luna Lovegood, this is due to her individual mind and style; for Phil in Groundhog Day, it is
due to his isolation in reliving the same day over and over again alone.
Suffering – each of these characters are seen to be suffering throughout the majority of
the film they are in, this is mostly due to their desire towards an unattainable dream:
unconventional love, changing their society or simply waking up to a new day.
Male – The majority of characters listed are male. It is strange that a mostly equal split
between male and female answers have such a strong preference to male characters. This
is perhaps due to a historical bias of writing male protagonists, or perhaps because the
qualities identified as likable by this demographic are seen as unattractive in women.
• Ron Weasley (Harry Potter)
• Luna Lovegood (Harry potter)
• Theodore (Her)
• Oliver Tate (Submarine)
• Lester Burnham (American Beauty)
• Phil (Groundhog Day)
• Chihiro (Spirited Away)
8. Target Audience Conclusion
From the data collected from those interested in my film , I can conclude that
my target audience for ‘After Hours’ are of a mostly male, 17 – 24 age
demographic who fall under demographic E as students, yet most likely come
from a background of, and will grow into, demographic B and C1. The
demographic identify as Atheist and mostly hold left-wing politics.
The psychographic analysis of this target audience suggests that they are
mostly interested in arts subjects yet hold an equal appreciation and capability
towards other areas of study.
Individual Comedy, Action and Drama cinema is at the top of their filmic
interests and they tend to relate to characters who are imperfect and
unconventional due to their levels of determination and resistance against the
mainstream.
In order for my short film, ‘After Hours’, to be successful in appealing to this
target audience, I will focus on heightening the sense of individual heroism
against societies struggles. From my research I have established that this is
what allows my target audience to relate to characters and plot lines of
narrative.
