To combine good typography skills with the FOCUS design process to create an engaging
piece that will communicate your message to the target audience. Your cover needs to be all
about you to introduce yourself to the world.
I did some browsing so that I could get some ideas of good layout designs. I sketched out a
few ideas. I designed a layout map using InDesign. I scrolled through my selfies until I found
one with a plain background. I know cropping out backgrounds can take time so I chose a
simpler route! I drafted some headline ideas. I inserted my selfie and my headlines into the
layout map. I knew what font I wanted to use because it’s one of my favorites and I use it for
everything. It’s Bebas/Bebas Neue. (The title is a modified Didot.) I then played with sizes,
tracking, leading, and colors until I felt it was legible and dynamic. Lastly, I saved it as an
InDesign doc and exported it as a JPG in 600 ppi.

Create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish a visual identity across
documents.
I first sketched out some ideas for the logo on paper. I had about 36 different options. After
sketching, I scanned my sketches into my computer. I then opened them up in Illustrator and
started creating some of my sketches digitally by using the pen tool to trace over my hand-
drawn versions. I came up with 6 options. I narrowed it down to 3. I got votes from various
people on which was their favorite. I pulled from 28 opinions and 70% of them were for this
log0. So that was the one I decided to move forward with! I used the colors from my logo to
create a fun and trendy design on my letterhead and business card. I made sure to follow the
rules of alignment and repetition.

TextWrangler
To code a custom webpage with HTML and CSS.
First I wrote the content of the website in a Word document so that when the time came I
could just copy and paste it into the HTML. I then resized my logo to be no longer than 500
px on the long side. I downloaded my HTML file and opened it with TextWrangler. I added
the necessary tags and indented accordingly. I then started adding my content. Then I
downloaded the CSS file and linked it in the HTML code. I made customizations in my CSS to
match the colors in my logo and changed the fonts to also match the logo. I changed a few
other things including: customized the location of the bullet points, centered my logo, added
line spacing, and made a hyperlink instead of just adding a url at the bottom. I also added a
background image and a footer pattern. Lastly, I made sure to validate my HTML and CSS.

Adobe InDesign
To design a mock website homepage using a grid.
I first picked an idea of what I was going to use for the basis of my website. I chose the same
bookstore business I have used in past projects. I then started sketching an idea of how I
wanted to lay it out. I knew I wanted featured reads, a slideshow of images, and a plug-in
for whatever is important at the bookstore that week. I came up with three sketches. After
I sketched it on paper, I chose which layout seemed to have the most potential and then
jumped into Photoshop and opened the 16-column grid. I created a wireframe to get me
started. After my wireframe, I added the actual content. After feedback and editing, my final
design ended up being only a little different from my original sketch and wireframe.

Adobe Photoshop
To combine photography and design skills and create a project that encompasses a consistent
color scheme from the image.
I speant some time photographing natual elements in my Mother-in-Law’s backyard. Once I
chose what photo I wanted to use, I want to Adobe Kuler and chose a color scheme. I did a
lot to the photo to create the look I was going for: I increased the levels, the vibrance, and
the saturation. I changed the color of the spines to have more magenta in them. I then added
some sharpness to the base of the spines and some blur to the tips. After editing, I created
a new 8.5 x 11 inch document in Photoshop. Then I pulled my photo on top of it and started
designing. I first added the color scheme. Then the text. Most of my design was about the
typography so I spent some time choosing my fonts. Lastly, I added the colored bars and
opaque box.

To create an infographic that organizes data in a visually pleasing way.
I brainstormed a few ideas but was really inspired by one I saw on Pinterest called “Dwight
Schrute’s Resume.” I decided to make an infographic using my favorite TV character,
Leslie Knope. I did some research to find data and found a bunch of different websites
with different facts. After compiling the statistics, quotes, and photos I wanted, I made
an inspiration page with ideas for color schemes and layouts. Next, I sketched out some
graphics and layouts that I thought I might want to include in the infographic. I opened up
Illustrator and designed a few vector images that I knew I wanted to use as visuals. I used
Adobe InDesign to do the remainder of the layout.

PREZI

Prezi
To persuade a client that Prezi is a viable presentation software to use for an upcoming
campaign. Choose a topic you are interested in to create an instructional presentation with
10-15 frames. Topic ideas should be creative and interesting.
I wrote down some topics I am passionate about. Recycling was the one I landed on! I wrote a
long list of ways I recycle, and then narrowed it down to just the tips I thought new recyclers
could easily practice. I searched Google for an image that I liked that could be the base for
my sketch. I had originally been searching for an earth or tree image. The background I found
sort of combined the two. Then I sketched! I typed out my points, focusing on keeping them
succinct. I looked through the available clipart on Prezi, and found some perfect images.
Lastly, I worked on the path and transitions.

Adobe Photoshop
To design a spiritual poster montage using the blend of images and type.
I first began by brainstorming ideas for this project. I decided that I wanted to create a
montage that reflected current and past religious intolerance. In Photoshop I opened an
image of an LDS temple that I found online. Then I opened the other two photos, used the
lasso/ feather tool at 30%, and dragged them onto the temple frame. I used the eraser tool
at 15% to blend as well as changed the opacities of the layers. I also used the paint brush
tool to do some blending. I added a warming photo filter to just the image of the woman so
that there would be more yellow in the image to match the yellow in the temple. I then used
an excerpt from an article of faith as my quote. I chose a font I liked and placed an opaque
bar behind it to make it more visible. I also duplicated the text layer. I made sure to abide by
the design principles such as alignment, color scheme and flow.

Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
To design an informational brochure.
I first created the logo in Illustrator. Then I wrote my body copy, after which I created an
Indesign document for it to be placed into. I saved my images as Photoshop documents and
also placed them on the template. I then edited the images, text, and design elements so
that they would fit in a pleasing manner. Along with this, I did a subtle text wrap around an
image in my design. I then printed the brochure and reprinted it with more correct margins.
