2. Morena Moshoeshoe was
born around 1786 at
Menkhoaneng in Leribe
district.He is the son of
Morena Mokhachane and
Nkhono Kholu. His father
was the leader of Bakoena
tribe and he was the
subordinate of Mpiti, the
chief of Sekake who was
Mokhachane’s kinsman.

3. a) Morena Moshoeshoe wanted to build his own nation.
b) The village(Menkhoaneng) was divided into two parts,
some people loved him than his father.
c) He wanted to fulfill what he was prophecised by morena
Mohlomi.

WHY DID MORENA MOSHOESHOE MOVED FROM MENKHOANENG TO BOTHA-BOTHE?
4. Botha-Bothe was becoming a smaller place for his people.
His animals were always captured.
Thaba –Bosiu was a stronger natural fortres than Botha-Bothe
which he had held before.
It was also on the left bank of the Caledon river and
consequently less open to invaders from Natal.
WHY DID MORENA MOSHOESHOE DECIDED TO MOVE FROM BOTHA-BOTHE TO THABA-BOSIU
5. In 1824 Morena Moshoeshoe arrived at Thaba-Bosiu late at night so he
and his people were unable to climb the mountain because of it’s
steepness. There were also news spread years later that threatened
Moshoeshoe’s enemies saying that at night time the mountain grew larger
than usual but this was not true. In this case Morena Moshoeshoe named
Thaba-Bosiu “mountain at night”.

SEVEN PASSES OF THABA-BOSIU
8. Three missionaries from French Paris Evangelical church(LECSA) :
Eugene Cassalis, Thomas Arbouset and Constant Gosselin arrived at
Thaba-Bosiu at the invitation of king Moshoeshoe on the 28 June 1833.
They builed headquarters of the church LECSA at Morija.
In 1862, two Roman Catholic missionaries : Jean Francios Allard and
Joseph Gerard also arrived.
In 1876, Anglican diocese of Bloemfontein also sent missionaries who
settled at Mohale’s Hoek at St. Stephen’s mission.
ARRIVAL OF MISSIONARIES
9. In 1838, the missionaries completed building a mission house and a church, so
Cassalis stay at Thaba-Bosiu to take charge of the mission.
In 1852, the Boers convinced Sir George Cathcart(Cape Governor) to invade
Moshoeshoe by saying Basotho had stolen their cattle in the battle fought at the Berea
plateau.
In 1854, the Boers were given independence by the British so they occupied Basotho
territory named Orange Free State.
Morena Moshoeshoe used some strategyies such as diplomacy where he build an
international relations by building a mission and had good relationship between
British by giving cattle.
EVENTS OCCURRED
10. Morena Moshoeshoe died on the 11
March 1870 and he was buried at
Thaba-Bosiu. Today Thaba-Bosiu is
the most respectful site in Lesotho
because it was not only the mountain
where Basotho nation was found but it
is also the burial place of morena
Moshoeshoe and burial place of his
sons. Today Thaba-Bosiu is a national
memorial that have been declared by
Lesotho Government in 1967 since
construction of buildings are still
standing.
THE END OF MOSHOESHOE
