3. Magazine Cover
ADAHJI Magazine: An uplifting women’s magazine.
28 September 2016
COMM 130 Visual Media
Doug Holladay
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Design a magazine cover that showcases a self portrait as well
as articles about yourself.
Adahji is a combination of two words. Adah, means “a beautiful
addition” and Ji means “very”. The topics I chose for the articles
describe a typical day in my busy life. Never a dull moment!
I made a few thumbnail sketches of my design. Next, I created
a shape map in InDesign of my sketches. I took a selfie and
opened the image in Photoshop and cut out the background. I
looked up some nice images of roses to add a feminine flair to
the design. Next I saved it as a jpg and placed it in InDesign.
I then placed in my jpg document and sized it to do a full bleed
on my 8.5 x 11 layout. I added a title and played quite a bit with
typefaces, sizes, fills and borders. I also added text boxes and
added interesting things about myself. and went to work on
making them fit around or on top of the image I selected. I once
again played with boxes opacity and contrast. I listened to the
critiques of peers and collegues and made edits as necessary.

4. Brochure
Juui’s Couture Hair Salon advertisment
November 2016
Comm 130 Visual Media
Brother Holladay
Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
Design a professional looking brochure for a business.
I first thought of some different types of businesses and
narrowed it down to a hair salon. I designed my logo and I
formulated a plan for my brochure layout. I then folded a
mockup brochure and drew directly on it to make sure my layout
would be correct. I went to Indesign and came up with my shape
map. I added grids and guides, image and text boxes and logo
and title placement.
Next, I developed a color scheme for the brochure that used
some of the colors from my photograph. I played a lot with color
adjustments and tried to use the eyedropper tool a lot to create
similar color patterns. I decided to get rid of a few elements that
were not working, such as a flower on page 5 and some fancy
font on page 2. Then I saved the images in Photoshop and
placed them in Indesign. I created a custom image in photoshop
that I could use for text wrapping. I printed the brochure and
folded it as described for a nice clean edge.

5. Web Page
Drywall service website for Big Jake’s Drywall business.
October 2016
Comm 130 Visual Media
Brother Holladay
Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
Create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish
a visual identity across documents.
After designing a logo for Big Jake’s Drywall business, I
researched some good elements that other drywall websites
utilized. I saw what they were lacking and how I could help the
business get more hits through a good looking design. I drew
out a shape map. Imported some images I had found online
and from the customer and created the buttons that would be
used for tabs on the top of the webpage. I added some other
features at the bottom, creating everything in Indesign. The
images were easy to work with and I created a photo gallery.
I brought in the logo, added contact information and made sure
all of the textures and colors worked together with nice contrast
and harmony. I made sure that the font choices were masculine
and industrial looking to attract the customers who might be
looking for a skilled drywaller. I simplified my design and cut out
any thing that distracted from the main message.

6. Infographic
Infographic charting Celine Dion’s Rrse to stardom.
October 2016
Comm 130 Visual Media
Brother Holladay
Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
Create an infographic that organizes data in a visually
pleasing way.
I did some research online and looked at several infographics
that appealed to me. There are so many different styles, but I
decided to do a time line with a real photo of Celine in concert.
I read her biography and looked for sites that shared a lot of
information about her rise to fame. I searched for several photos
that would work for a side placement.
I did 2 different design sketches and a color scheme plan.
I came up with a plan for my infographic and got started.
Next I opened up photoshop and prepared my background
and started on my Infographic in Indesign and Illustrator. Then I
created the circle graphics, pie charts and timeline.

7. Coding
A web page for Big Jake’s Drywall contract work
October 2016
COMM 130 Visual Media
Doug Holladay
Notebook++, Safari, Adobe Photoshop
Code a custom webpage with HTML and CSS.
I used my logo from the 8A project and resized it to be no longer
that 500 px on the long side. Next, I observed the designs of
other web pages and made mental notes of what I would like
mine to look like. I opened a html file and began setting up my
tags. Then I created my CSS file and linked it in the HTML code.
I added unique colors and background images to my CSS to
match the theme of my logo and changed the fonts to ones that
mirrored my logo and color choices. I created the background
image by playing with the opacity in photoshop and then linked
it to my HTML code. I validated my HTML and CSS.

8. Photo Montage
An inspirational photo montage, using key elements from the
movie Broken and a powerful quote from the scriptures.
September 2016
COMM 130 Visual Media
Doug Holladay
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Design a spiritual poster montage blending images and type.
I chose to create a montage that focused on the incredible true
story of a young American POW from the movie Unbroken. His
courage and conviction as a POW amidst his violent captures in
WWII is truly remarkable.
I first created a few sketches of the layout I had in mind. Little
did I know that it would evolve into a completely different layout.
Sometimes a good critique is really helpful. I searched for some
really good high quality pictures and embedded them into Pho-
toshop. Using the masking techniques from last lesson, I com-
bined all the various pictures I used to create the montage. I also
used a sharpening filter, played with the opacity and brush tools.
Next, I found a scripture that really inspires me and played with
the different types of font faces found on google fonts. I tried to
watch out for opportunities where I could apply repetition, flow,
contrast and unity. Last, I tried to let go of things I didn’t need
by simplifying.

9. Business Indentity
A business identity for Big Jake’s Drywall Taping and Mud.
October 2016
COMM 130 Visual Media
Doug Holladay
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
Create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish
a visual identity across documents.
I came up with several sketches for this logo and decided on the
icon of the large arm of Jake’s Drywall. I opened up Illustrator
and started creating some of my sketches digitally. The hand
and drywall trowel took the most time to recreate in Illustrator.
I changed the font types and came up witha black, silver and
amber color scheme.
Next, I chose the illustration logo and then created my let-
terhead and business card by using a textured picture be-
hind the text in Photoshop. I tried to use the opacity feature
to create a watermark and utilized the logo throughout
each business card and letterhead piece. After reviewing
the copy with my client, (my husband) he decided he would
prefer a different color scheme so I adjusted my design.

10. Prezi Presentation
A presentation about the art of rock climbing.
October 2016
COMM 130 Visual Media
Doug Holladay
Prezi, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator
Create an instructional presentation using the Prezi software to
demonstrate it’s features and capabilities.
I researched the topic of rock climbing and looked for any
pictures/media that would be helpful in my presentation and
saved them in a file. I went with my first idea because it had such
intriguing imagery to me. It was a rock climber suspended on the
side of a boulder wall. I decided to work my presentation around
the different points of contact with the rock and the elements of
learning how to rock climb.
I used Photoshop to create my background image and saved
some high resolution photos to use in my presentation. I used my
sketch as my basic foundation. I created the title and the picture
collage in Photoshop as well. Next, I added the background
photo and all of the other photos in and began creating my slide
presentation with each transition focusing on the 3 basic meth-
ods of rock climbing. I also added a few graphics and you tube
videos to add some interesting elements to engage the viewer.

11. Photo Design
A photo design for the Hopebox Theatre
September 2016
COMM 130 Visual Media
Doug Holladay
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
By using photography and design skills, create a project that
encompasses a consistent color scheme from the image.
For this project I decided that I would like to focus on a place
where I work called the Hopebox Theatre. I knew the color
schemes there would be adjacent, so I went for colors that are
blue and green and took some shots there on site.
I edited the photo by playing with the vibrance, sharpness, levels,
etc until it looked just right. I worked with the photo by first select-
ing the sign and adding boarders to even out the image.
I added text to the Title, using the type already on the sign, and
then added the words, “Bringing Hope to Families Through the
Performing Arts” under the Hopebox Theatre title. I created a
new 8.5 x 11 inch document in Photoshop. Then I pulled my pho-
to on top of it and started designing. I chose an analogous color
scheme, using teal blue, gray and deep blue.
