5. KATSE DAM
This 185m high double curvature arch dam wall was constructed
from February 1991 and completed in may 1997, and forms part
of phase 1 of Lesotho Highlands Water Project, the dam was built
by the highlands water venture (HWV), a consortium of seven
international contractors namely Imbrigilo (a leading company)
from Italy; Bouyegues from France, Hochtief from Germany,
Stirling and Kier from the United Kingdom and Concor and Group
5 from South Africa
Built at a confluence of Bokong and Malibamats’o rivers, the dam
boasts a storage capacity of 1,950 billion litres, and stands at 2,000
metres above sea. It is one of fewer than 30 double-curved
concrete arch dams in the world and one of the world’s 10 largest
concrete arch dams in terms of its volume. It is the highest dam
wall in Africa.

ABOUT THE WALL
The wall is 185 metres high, 60 metres
wide at the base, 9 metres wide at the top
and curves from side to side as from top
to bottom, making it one of only 30
double-curved concrete arch dam walls in
the world.
During the initial excavation, it was
discovered that the bedrock of was
seismically unstable so the clever
engineers incorporated a moveable joint
in the dam’s base to allow it flex.

8. MOHALE DAM
Mohale Dam is constracted at the
influence of Senqunyane and Likalaneng
rivers.
The dam allows for abstraction and
diversion of waters of Senqunyane river
through a 32 km interconnecting tunnel
from Mohale reservoir to Katse on the
Bokong arm. Water can be drawn from
katse to Mohale dam.

15. TS’EHLANYANE NATIONAL PARK
Ts'ehlanyane National Park is a National Park in
Lesotho. It is located in the Maloti Mountains in
Leribe District, and is part of the larger Maloti-
Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area.
This Lesotho northern park protects a high-
altitude, 2,600-metre (8,500 ft) patch of rugged
wilderness, including one of Lesotho’s only stands
of indigenous forest with a number of rare
undergrowth plants that are unique to this
woodland habitat.
The name "Ts'ehlanyane" is the local common
name for the berg bamboo (Thamnocalamus
tessellatus), from which the river and park take
their name. It is fitting that the park should bear
the name of this Drakensberg endemic plant, as it
may be the most important refuge for this plant
in the entire Maloti-Drakensberg mountain range.
