Introduction to ArtificiaI Intelligence in Higher Education
Evaluation question 2
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND THE
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
By Owen Chapman
2. THE GOAL
• Our film aimed to establish itself as a successful example of a psychological thriller
film. Throughout it, we reinforce the idea that the film is meant to make the
audience feel suspense and tension. The film does this by conveying quite
disturbing and traumatic themes and concepts. These themes are typical of a thriller
film, therefore this is the reason we included these particular themes, as we felt that
we could express these themes in a new, unique way.
5. ANALYSIS OF RADIO TRAILER
• Our radio trailer has features included, that are typical of other radio trailers. These
features include; music, voice over (with details on the film in terms of cast and
crew), sound effects and dialogue from the film. This is the usual structure of a radio
trailer, as it helps to provide the necessary information to the audience, without
revealing to much and therefore becoming enticing.
• The music used in a radio trailer helps to convey the tone of the film to the
audience, allowing them to infer the genre of the film and then decide whether or
not they wish to see the film.
• The voice over gives the important information such as the release date, age rating
etc. This again gives the audience the decision to see the film or not based on the
information they have gathered from the trailer.
6. ANCILLARY TEXTS
• To reflect our themes into our film
poster, we used reviews that
described our film as “intense and
thrilling.” These descriptions
accurately summarise the aims of
our film and what we transferred
into both our film poster and radio
trailer.
• Our film poster takes inspiration
from early horror Giallo films like
‘Suspiria’ and ‘The Bird with the
Crystal Plumage.’ These poster
inspired ours for the font style,
being ‘serif’ in terms of the
graphology of the text. The red is
also used to symbolise blood and
danger, linking to the typical
conventions of the genre I am
attempting to convey.
7. OTHER ANCILLARY TEXTS
• The poster we created also
reflects this poster of
Nosferatu in the visual
aspects. For instance, the
poster itself being landscape
rather than, like most posters
being portrait. The imagery of
the poster is also like ours
with the character in the
centre of the poster.
• The religious imagery form
our poster is an intertextual
reference to this poster with
the door, usually being seen
in churches due to it’s unique
shape.
8. CONCLUSION
• Our radio trailer and film poster help to advertise the film we have created, as it
accurately illustrates the themes and messages of our film, as stated by a sample of
our audience who have seen our poster and radio trailer. Therefore the audience
can identify what type of film we have made. Both the trailer and poster contribute
in marketing our film, that is of the psychological thriller genre, to attract the most
amount of viewers as possible.
