In 5 years, Olivia plans to have completed college and university studies in media and secured a job in the field. Currently, she is studying creative media at college to explore her interests and decide her career path. She intends to pursue a media-focused university degree to improve her job prospects. Potential degree programs include Creative Media at Leeds Beckett, Media and Journalism at Northumbria University, and Creative Media at the University of Birmingham. Olivia hopes to gain work experience as a studio runner in Leeds to learn about behind-the-scenes operations. She needs to improve deadline management and skills with software like Photoshop.
2. What are you currently doing to pursue a career in your chosen field?
Currently I am not doing anything job wise in media, however I am doing creative media at college, this is the first
step in my career as it helps me to get an understanding of the subject and do different styles to see which one fits
me best.
From doing this it helps be decide what I want to continue with in the future.
3. What do you plan to do next in the pursuit of your chosen field?
I don’t have a definite plan on what I am wanting to do, however I think if I want a career in the media the best
thing to do is to get a degree in it so I have more of a chance to get higher in the job. So my next plan is looking for
universities that focus more in media.
4. Select at least three potential University courses that would help you further your career aims. You should state
what the course is, which university it is run by, the entry requirements and why you think it would help you.
1. Leeds Becket – Creative Media – Level 4 in English and Maths – I think this would be a good course as it is
what I do at college and it gives me an option to have a “Sandwhich year” which lets me work in a similar
environment to get a feel of the things I will be doing. I think this is a good idea.
2. Northumbria University – Media and Journalism – Level 4 in English and Maths – I want to try something in
journalism so this course gives me a try in it and also sticks with similar things I have done in college.
3. University of Birmingham – Creative Media – Level 4 in English and Maths – This university gives me a variety
of different things to try, helping me get a wider view in the media.
5. What type of work experience do you think you would need to help you in your future career? How might you
be able to find work experience placements? If you could pick anywhere to do work experience, where would it
be and why?
Personally I would really like to do work experience as a runner in a studio, a close studio to me is Leeds, I also can
drive so driving wouldn’t be a problem for me. I think this job would be perfect to see what happens behind the
scenes and it is also a good way to start in media.
6. What specific skills do you need to develop? There should be a mix of industry specific skills and also personal
development points. When you identify these, come up with suggestions as to how you might make those
improvements.
A skill I need to develop is to get work done and in when the deadline is due. I think this is an important skill so
that I am reliable and can be trusted. I will change by keeping up to date with my work in college and university.
Another skill is to improve my skills with software, such as Photoshop and other Adobe programs. I will make this
improvement by using them more and learning as much about them to be confident using them.
7. In 5 years time I will…
In 5 years I will have completed college and university and hopefully I will have found a job that suits me and
something I enjoy doing in the media.
